Distribution of the distance between opposite nodes of random polygons with a fixed knot

We examine numerically the distribution function $f_K(r)$ of distance $r$ between opposite polygonal nodes for random polygons of $N$ nodes with a fixed knot type $K$. Here we consider three knots such as $\emptyset$, $3_1$ and $3_1 \sharp 3_1$. In a wide range of $r$, the shape of $f_K(r)$ is well fitted by the scaling form of self-avoiding walks. The fit yields the Gaussian exponents $ν_K = {1 \over 2}$ and $γ_K = 1$. Furthermore, if we re-scale the intersegment distance $r$ by the average size $R_K$ of random polygons of knot $K$, the distribution function of the variable $r/R_K$ should become the same Gaussian distribution for any large value of $N$ and any knot $K$. We also introduce a fitting formula to the distribution $g_K(R)$ of gyration radius $R$ for random polygons under some topological constraint $K$.

Completeness of Bethe ansatz for 1D Hubbard model with AB-flux through combinatorial formulas and exact enumeration of eigenstates

For the one-dimensional Hubbard model with Aharonov-Bohm-type magnetic flux, we study the relation between its symmetry and the number of Bethe states. First we show the existence of solutions for Lieb-Wu equations with an arbitrary number of up-spins and one down-spin, and exactly count the number of the Bethe states. The results are consistent with Takahashi's string hypothesis if the system has the so(4) symmetry. With the Aharonov-Bohm-type magnetic flux, however, the number of Bethe states increases and the standard string hypothesis does not hold. In fact, the so(4) symmetry reduces to the direct sum of charge-u(1) and spin-sl(2) symmetry through the change of AB-flux strength. Next, extending Kirillov's approach, we derive two combinatorial formulas from the relation among the characters of so(4)- or (u(1)\oplus sl(2))-modules. One formula reproduces Essler-Korepin-Schoutens' combinatorial formula for counting the number of Bethe states in the so(4)-case. From the exact analysis of the Lieb-Wu equations, we find that another formula corresponds to the spin-sl(2) case.

Level statistics of XXZ spin chains with a random magnetic field

The level-spacing distribution of a spin 1/2 XXZ chain is numerically studied under random magnetic field. We show explicitly how the level statistics depends on the lattice size L, the anisotropy parameter $Δ$, and the mean amplitude of the random magnetic field h. In the energy spectrum, quantum integrability competes with nonintegrability derived from the randomness, where the XXZ interaction is modified by the parameter $Δ$. When $Δ\ne 0$, the level-spacing distribution mostly shows Wigner-like behavior, while when $Δ$=0, Poisson-like behavior appears although the system is nonintegrable due to randomness. Poisson-like behavior also appears for $Δ\ne 0$ in the large h limit. Furthermore, the level-spacing distribution depends on the lattice size L, particularly when the random field is weak.

Introduction to solvable lattice models in statistical and mathematical physics

Some features of integrable lattice models are reviewed for the case of the six-vertex model. By the Bethe ansatz method we derive the free energy of the six-vertex model. Then, from the expression of the free energy we show analytically the critical singularity near the phase transition in the anti-ferroelectric regime, where the essential singularity similar to the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition appears. We discuss the connection of the six-vertex model to the conformal field theory with c=1. We also introduce various exactly solvable models defined on two-dimensional lattices such as the chiral Potts model and the IRF models. We show that the six-vertex model has rich mathematical structures such as the quantum groups and the braid group. The graphical approach is emphasized in this review. We explain the meaning of the Yang-Baxter equation by its diagram. Furthermore, we can understand the defining relation of the algebraic Bethe ansatz by the graphical representation. We can thus easily translate formulas of the algebraic Bethe ansatz into those of the statistical models. As an illustration, we show explicitly how we can derive Baxter's expressions from those of the algebraic Bethe ansatz.

The $sl_2$ loop algebra symmetry of the twisted transfer matrix of the six vertex model at roots of unity

We discuss a family of operators which commute or anti-commute with the twisted transfer matrix of the six-vertex model at $q$ being roots of unity: $q^{2N}=1$. The operators commute with the Hamiltonian of the XXZ spin chain under the twisted boundary conditions, and they are valid also for the inhomogeneous case. For the case of the anti-periodic boundary conditions, we show explicitly that the operators generate the $sl_2$ loop algebra in the sector of the total spin operator $S^Z \equiv N/2 ({\rm mod} N)$. The infinite-dimensional symmetry leads to exponentially-large spectral degeneracies, as shown for the periodic boundary conditions \cite{DFM}. Furthermore, we derive explicitly the $sl_2$ loop algebra symmetry for the periodic XXZ spin chain with an odd number of sites in the sector $S^Z \equiv N/2 ({\rm mod} N)$ when $q$ is a primitive $N$ th root of unity with $N$ odd. Interestingly, in the case of N=3, various conjectures of combinatorial formulas for the XXZ spin chain with odd-sites have been given \cite{Odd,Razumov,BGN,GBNM}. We also note a connection to the spectral degeneracies of the eight-vertex model.

Bethe-ansatz studies of energy level crossings in the one-dimensional Hubbard model

Motivated by Heilmann and Lieb's work, we discuss energy level crossings for the one-dimensional Hubbard model through the Bethe ansatz, constructing explicitly the degenerate eigenstates at the crossing points. After showing the existence of solutions for the Lieb--Wu equations with one-down spin, we solve them numerically and construct Bethe ansatz eigenstates. We thus verify all the level crossings in the spectral flows observed by the numerical diagonalization method with one down-spin. For each of the solutions we obtain its energy spectral flow along the interaction parameter U. Then, we observe that some of the energy level crossings can not be explained in terms of U-independent symmetries. Dynamical symmetries of the Hubbard model are fundamental for identifying each of the spectral lines at the level crossing points. We show that the Bethe ansatz eigenstates which degenerate at the points have distinct sets of eigenvalues of the higher conserved operators. We also show a twofold permanent degeneracy in terms of the Bethe ansatz wavefunction.

Unexpected non-Wigner behavior in level-spacing distributions of next-nearest-neighbor coupled XXZ spin chains

The level-spacing distributions of XXZ spin chains with next-nearest-neighbor couplings are studied under periodic boundary conditions. We confirm that integrable XXZ spin chains mostly have the Poisson distribution as expected. On the contrary, the level-spacing distributions of next-nearest-neighbor coupled XXZ chains are given by non-Wigner distributions. It is against the expectations, since the models are nonintegrable.

XXZ Bethe states as highest weight vectors of the $sl_2$ loop algebra at roots of unity

We prove some part of the conjecture that regular Bethe ansatz eigenvectors of the XXZ spin chain at roots of unity are highest weight vectors of the $sl_2$ loop algebra. Here $q$ is related to the XXZ anisotropic coupling $Δ$ by $Δ=(q+q^{-1})/2$, and it is given by a root of unity, $q^{2N}=1$, for a positive integer $N$. We show that regular XXZ Bethe states are annihilated by the generators ${\bar x}_k^{+}$'s, for any $N$. We discuss, for some particular cases of N=2, that regular XXZ Bethe states are eigenvectors of the generators of the Cartan subalgebra, ${\bar h}_k$'s. Here the loop algebra $U(L(sl_2))$ is generated by ${\bar x}_k^{\pm}$ and ${\bar h}_k$ for $k \in {\bf Z}$, which are the classical analogues of the Drinfeld generators of the quantum loop algebra $U_q(L(sl_2))$. A representation of $U(L(sl_2))$ is called highest weight if it is generated by a vector $Ω$ which is annihilated by the generators ${\bar x}_k^{+}$'s and such that $Ω$ is an eigenvector of the ${\bar h}_k$'s. We also discuss the classical analogue of the Drinfeld polynomial which characterizes the irreducible finite-dimensional highest weight representation of $U(L(sl_2))$.

Average size of random polygons with fixed knot topology

We have evaluated by numerical simulation the average size $R_K$ of random polygons of fixed knot topology $K = \emptyset, 3_1, 3_1\sharp4_1$, and we have confirmed the scaling law $R^2_K \sim N^{2ν_K}$ for the number $N$ of polygonal nodes in a wide range; $N = 100$ -- 2200. The best fit gives $2 ν_K \simeq 1.11$ -- 1.16 with good fitting curves in the whole range of $N$. The estimate of $2 ν_K$ is consistent with the exponent of self-avoiding polygons. In a limited range of $N$ ($N \gtrsim 600$), however, we have another fit with $2 ν_K \simeq 1.01$ -- 1.07, which is close to the exponent of random polygons.

Geometrical complexity of conformations of ring polymers under topological constraints

One measure of geometrical complexity of a spatial curve is the number of crossings in a planar projection of the curve. For $N$-noded ring polymers with a fixed knot type, we evaluate numerically the average of the crossing number over some directions. We find that the average crossing number under the topological constraint are less than that of no topological constraint for large $N$. The decrease of the geometrical complexity is significant when the thickness of polymers is small. The simulation with or without a topological constraint also shows that the average crossing number and the average size of ring polymers are independent measures of conformational complexity.

Knot complexity and the probability of random knotting

The probability of a random polygon (or a ring polymer) having a knot type $K$ should depend on the complexity of the knot $K$. Through computer simulation using knot invariants, we show that the knotting probability decreases exponentially with respect to knot complexity. Here we assume that some aspects of knot complexity are expressed by the minimal crossing number $C$ and the aspect ratio $p$ of the tube length to the diameter of the {\it ideal knot} of $K$, which is a tubular representation of $K$ in its maximally inflated state.

Finite-size and asymptotic behaviors of the gyration radius of knotted cylindrical polygons

Several nontrivial properties are shown for the mean square radius of gyration $R_K^2$ of ring polymers with a fixed knot type K. Through computer simulation, we discuss both finite-size and asymptotic behaviors of the gyration radius under the topological constraint for self-avoiding polygons consisting of N cylindrical segments with radius r. We find that the average size of ring polymers with a knot K can be much larger than that of no topological constraint. The effective expansion due to the topological constraint depends strongly on the parameter r which is related to the excluded volume. The topological expansion is particularly significant for the small r case, where the simulation result is associated with that of random polygons with the knot K.

Construction of some missing eigenvectors of the XYZ spin chain at the discrete coupling constants and the exponentially large spectral degeneracy of the transfer matrix

We discuss an algebraic method for constructing eigenvectors of the transfer matrix of the eight vertex model at the discrete coupling parameters. We consider the algebraic Bethe ansatz of the elliptic quantum group $E_{τ, η}(sl_2)$ for the case where the parameter $η$ satisfies $2 N η= m_1 + m_2 τ$ for arbitrary integers $N$, $m_1$ and $m_2$. When $m_1$ or $m_2$ is odd, the eigenvectors thus obtained have not been discussed previously. Furthermore, we construct a family of degenerate eigenvectors of the XYZ spin chain, some of which are shown to be related to the $sl_2$ loop algebra symmetry of the XXZ spin chain. We show that the dimension of some degenerate eigenspace of the XYZ spin chain on $L$ sites is given by $N 2^{L/N}$, if $L/N$ is an even integer. The construction of eigenvectors of the transfer matrices of some related IRF models is also discussed.

The 8V CSOS model and the $sl_2$ loop algebra symmetry of the six-vertex model at roots of unity

We review an algebraic method for constructing degenerate eigenvectors of the transfer matrix of the eight-vertex Cyclic Solid-on-Solid lattice model (8V CSOS model), where the degeneracy increases exponentially with respect to the system size. We consider the elliptic quantum group $E_{τ, η}(sl_2)$ at the discrete coupling constants: $2N η= m_1 + i m_2 τ$, where $N, m_1$ and $m_2$ are integers. Then we show that degenerate eigenvectors of the transfer matrix of the six-vertex model at roots of unity in the sector $S^Z \equiv 0$ (mod $N$) are derived from those of the 8V CSOS model, through the trigonometric limit. They are associated with the complete $N$ strings. From the result we see that the dimension of a given degenerate eigenspace in the sector $S^Z \equiv 0$ (mod $N$) of the six-vertex model at $N$th roots of unity is given by $2^{2S_{max}^Z/N}$, where $S_{max}^Z$ is the maximal value of the total spin operator $S^Z$ in the degenerate eigenspace.

Anomalous finite-size effects and canonical asymptotic behaviors for the mean-squared gyration radius of Gaussian random knots

Anomalously strong finite-size effects have been observed for the mean square radius of gyration $R^2_K$ of Gaussian random polygons with a fixed knot $K$ as a function of the number $N$ of polygonal nodes. Through computer simulations with $N < 2000$, we find for several knots that the gyration radius $R^2_K$ can be approximated by a power law: $R^2_K \sim N^{2 ν_{K}^{eff}}$, where the effective exponents $ν_{K}^{eff}$ for the knots are larger than 0.5 and less than 0.6. A crossover occurs for the gyration radius of the trivial knot, when $N$ is roughly equal to the characteristic length $N_c$ of random knotting. For the asymptotic behavior of $R^2_K$, however, we find that it is consistent with the standard one with the scaling exponent 0.5. Thus, although the strong finite-size effects of $R^2_K$ remain effective for extremely large values of $N$, they can be matched with the asymptotic behavior of random walks.

Spin chains from super-models

We construct and study a class of N particle supersymmetric Hamiltonians with nearest and next-nearest neighbor inverse-square interaction in one dimension. We show that inhomogeneous XY models in an external non-uniform magnetic field can be obtained from these super-Hamiltonians in a particular limit decoupling the fermionic degrees of freedom from the kinematic ones. We further consider a suitable deformation of these super-models such that inhomogeneous XXZ Hamiltonians in an external non-uniform magnetic field are obtained in the same limit. We show that this deformed Hamiltonian with rational potential is, (i) mapped to a set of free super-oscillators through a similarity transformation and (ii) supersymmetric in terms of a new, non-standard realization of the supercharge. We construct many exact eigenstates of this Hamiltonian and discuss about the applicability of this technique to other models.

On the Dominance of Trivial Knots among SAPs on a Cubic Lattice

The knotting probability is defined by the probability with which an $N$-step self-avoiding polygon (SAP) with a fixed type of knot appears in the configuration space. We evaluate these probabilities for some knot types on a simple cubic lattice. For the trivial knot, we find that the knotting probability decays much slower for the SAP on the cubic lattice than for continuum models of the SAP as a function of $N$. In particular the characteristic length of the trivial knot that corresponds to a `half-life' of the knotting probability is estimated to be $2.5 \times 10^5$ on the cubic lattice.

Non-regular eigenstate of the XXX model as some limit of the Bethe state

For the one-dimensional XXX model under the periodic boundary conditions, we discuss two types of eigenvectors, regular eigenvectors which have finite-valued rapidities satisfying the Bethe ansatz equations, and non-regular eigenvectors which are descendants of some regular eigenvectors under the action of the SU(2) spin-lowering operator. It was pointed out by many authors that the non-regular eigenvectors should correspond to the Bethe ansatz wavefunctions which have multiple infinite rapidities. However, it has not been explicitly shown whether such a delicate limiting procedure should be possible. In this paper, we discuss it explicitly in the level of wavefunctions: we prove that any non-regular eigenvector of the XXX model is derived from the Bethe ansatz wavefunctions through some limit of infinite rapidities. We formulate the regularization also in terms of the algebraic Bethe ansatz method. As an application of infinite rapidity, we discuss the period of the spectral flow under the twisted periodic boundary conditions.
