A physicist-friendly reformulation of the mod-two Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index

Gauge anomaly in 4-dimensions can be viewed as a current inflow into an extra-dimension, where the total phase of the fermion partition function is given in a gauge invariant way by the Atiyah- Patodi-Singer(APS) eta-invariant of a 5-dimensional Dirac operator. However, this formalism requires a non-local boundary condition, with which the physical roles of edge/bulk modes are unclear and how the causality of the theory is maintained is not obvious. In this work, we consider a special case where the Dirac operator is in a real representation and its eta invariant becomes the mod-two type APS index. We propose a physicist-friendly reformulation of the mod-two index using domain-wall fermion formalism, which naturally describes how the global anomaly is canceled between edge and bulk.

Comments on the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem, domain wall, and Berry phase

It is known that the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index can be reformulated as the eta invariant of the Dirac operators with a domain wall mass which plays a key role in the anomaly inflow of the topological insulator with boundary. In this paper, we give a conjecture that the reformulated version of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index can be given simply from the Berry phase associated with domain wall Dirac operators when adiabatic approximation is valid. We explicitly confirm this conjecture for a special case in two dimensions where analytic calculation is possible. The Berry phase is divided into the bulk and the boundary contributions, each of which gives the bulk integration of the Chern character and the eta-invariant.

What does a quantum black hole look like?

We take a first step towards a holographic description of a black hole by means of a flow equation. We consider a free theory of multiple scalar fields at finite temperature and study its holographic geometry defined through a free flow of the scalar fields. We find that the holographic metric has the following properties: i) It is an asymptotic Anti-de Sitter (AdS) black brane metric with some unknown matter contribution. ii) It has no coordinate singularity and milder curvature singularity. iii) Its time component decays exponentially at a certain AdS radial slice. We find that the matter spreads all over the space, which we speculate to be due to thermal excitation of infinitely many massless higher spin fields. We conjecture that the above three are generic features of a black hole holographically realized by the flow equation method.

Conserved charges in general relativity

We present a precise definition of a conserved quantity from an arbitrary covariantly conserved current available in a general curved spacetime with Killing vectors. This definition enables us to define energy and momentum for matter by the volume integral. As a result we can compute charges of Schwarzschild and BTZ black holes by the volume integration of a delta function singularity. Employing the definition we also compute the total energy of a static compact star. It contains both the gravitational mass known as the Misner-Sharp mass in the Oppenheimer-Volkoff equation and the gravitational binding energy. We show that the gravitational binding energy has the negative contribution at maximum by 68% of the gravitational mass in the case of a constant density. We finally comment on a definition of generators associated with a vector field on a general curved manifold.

Mod-two APS index and domain-wall fermion

We reformulate the mod-two Atiyah-Patodi-Singer (APS) index in a physicist-friendly way using the domain-wall fermion. Our new formulation is given on a closed manifold, which is extended from the original manifold with boundary, where we instead give a fermion mass term changing its sign at the location of the original boundary. This new setup does not need the APS boundary condition, which is non-local. A mathematical proof of equivalence between the two different formulations is given by two different evaluations of the same index of a Dirac operator on a higher dimensional manifold. The domain-wall fermion allows us to separate the edge and bulk mode contributions in a natural but not in a gauge invariant way, which offers a straightforward description of the global anomaly inflow.

The Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index and domain-wall fermion Dirac operators

We introduce a mathematician-friendly formulation of the physicist-friendly derivation of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index of our previous paper. Our viewpoint sheds some new light on the interplay among the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer boundary condition, domain-wall fermions, and edge modes.

Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index on a lattice

We propose a non-perturbative formulation of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer(APS) index in lattice gauge theory, in which the index is given by the $η$ invariant of the domain-wall Dirac operator. Our definition of the index is always an integer with a finite lattice spacing. To verify this proposal, using the eigenmode set of the free domain-wall fermion, we perturbatively show in the continuum limit that the curvature term in the APS theorem appears as the contribution from the massive bulk extended modes, while the boundary $η$ invariant comes entirely from the massless edge-localized modes.

TKNN formula for general lattice Hamiltonian in odd dimensions

Topological insulators in odd dimensions are characterized by topological numbers. We prove the well-known relation between the topological number given by the Chern character of the Berry curvature and the Chern-Simons level of the low energy effective action for a general class of Hamiltonians bilinear in the fermion with general U(1) gauge interactions including non-minimal couplings by an explicit calculation. A series of Ward-Takahashi identities are crucial to relate the Chern-Simons level to a winding number, which could then be directly reduced to Chern character of Berry curvature by carrying out the integral over the temporal momenta.

The Anomaly Inflow of the domain-wall fermion in odd dimension

In 1985, Callan and Harvey showed a view of gauge anomaly as a missing current into an extra-dimension, and the total contribution, including the Chern-Simons current in the bulk, is conserved. However in their computation, the edge and bulk contributions are separately evaluated and their cross correlations, which should be relevant at boundary, are simply ignored. This issue has been solved in many approaches. In this work, we revisit this issue with a complete set of eigenstates of free domain-wall Hamiltonian and give the systematic evaluation, easy to take in the higher mass correction and extend to the higher dimension.

A lattice formulation of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index

Atiyah-Singer index theorem on a lattice without boundary is well understood owing to the seminal work by Hasenfratz et al. But its extension to the system with boundary (the so-called Atiyah- Patodi-Singer index theorem), which plays a crucial role in T-anomaly cancellation between bulk- and edge-modes in 3+1 dimensional topological matters, is known only in the continuum theory and no lattice realization has been made so far. In this work, we try to non-perturbatively define an alternative index from the lattice domain-wall fermion in 3+1 dimensions. We will show that this new index in the continuum limit, converges to the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index defined on a manifold with boundary, which coincides with the surface of the domain-wall.

A physicist-friendly reformulation of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index and its mathematical justification

The Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem describes the bulk-edge correspondence of symmetry protected topological insulators. The mathematical setup for this theorem is, however, not directly related to the physical fermion system, as it imposes on the fermion fields a non-local and unnatural boundary condition known as the "APS boundary condition" by hand. In 2017, we showed that the same integer as the APS index can be obtained from the $η$ invariant of the domain-wall Dirac operator. Recently we gave a mathematical proof that the equivalence is not a coincidence but generally true. In this contribution to the proceedings of LATTICE 2019, we try to explain the whole story in a physicist-friendly way.

Flow Equation of N=1 Supersymmetric O(N) Nonlinear Sigma Model in Two Dimensions

We study the flow equation for the $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric $O(N)$ nonlinear sigma model in two dimensions, which cannot be given by the gradient of the action, as evident from dimensional analysis. Imposing the condition on the flow equation that it respects both the supersymmetry and the $O(N)$ symmetry, we show that the flow equation has a specific form, which however contains an undetermined function of the supersymmetric derivatives $D$ and $\bar D$. Taking the most simple choice, we propose a flow equation for this model. As an application of the flow equation, we give the solution of the equation at the leading order in the large $N$ expansion. The result shows that the flow of the superfield in the model is dominated by the scalar term, since the supersymmetry is unbroken in the original model. It is also shown that the two point function of the superfield is finite at the leading order of the large $N$ expansion.

Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index from the domain-wall fermion Dirac operator

The Atiyah-Patodi-Singer(APS) index theorem attracts attention for understanding physics on the surface of materials in topological phases. The mathematical set-up for this theorem is, however, not directly related to the physical fermion system, as it imposes on the fermion fields a non-local boundary condition known as the "APS boundary condition" by hand, which is unlikely to be realized in the materials. In this work, we attempt to reformulate the APS index in a "physicist-friendly" way for a simple set-up with $U(1)$ or $SU(N)$ gauge group on a flat four-dimensional Euclidean space. We find that the same index as APS is obtained from the domain-wall fermion Dirac operator with a local boundary condition, which is naturally given by the kink structure in the mass term. As the boundary condition does not depend on the gauge fields, our new definition of the index is easy to compute with the standard Fujikawa method.

Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem for domain-wall fermion Dirac operator

Recently, the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer(APS) index theorem attracts attention for understanding physics on the surface of materials in topological phases. Although it is widely applied to physics, the mathematical set-up in the original APS index theorem is too abstract and general (allowing non-trivial metric and so on) and also the connection between the APS boundary condition and the physical boundary condition on the surface of topological material is unclear. For this reason, in contrast to the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, derivation of the APS index theorem in physics language is still missing. In this talk, we attempt to reformulate the APS index in a "physicist-friendly" way, similar to the Fujikawa method on closed manifolds, for our familiar domain-wall fermion Dirac operator in a flat Euclidean space. We find that the APS index is naturally embedded in the determinant of domain-wall fermions, representing the so-called anomaly descent equations.

Intra-cone transition effect to magnetoconductivity in Dirac semimetal

We study the transport of the fermions with a small mass in the presence of Coulomb impurities, which could be realized in slightly distorted Dirac semimetals. Using the semiclassical Boltzmann equation, we derive the relaxation times for two kinds of intra-cone transition process. One is due to the effect of mass, and the other is due to the excited states in Landau levels under the weaker magnetic field. Hence we derive the mass dependence and the magnetic field dependence of the longitudinal magnetoconductivity in the presence of parallel electric and magnetic fields.

Six-dimensional regularization of chiral gauge theories on a lattice

We propose a six-dimensional regularization of four dimensional chiral gauge theories. We consider a massive Dirac fermion in six dimensions with two different operators having domain-wall profiles in the fifth and the sixth directions, respectively. A Weyl fermion appears as a localized mode at the junction of the two domain-walls. In our formulation, the Stora-Zumino chain of the anomaly descent equations, starting from the axial $U(1)$ anomaly in six-dimensions to the gauge anomaly in four-dimensions, is naturally embedded. Moreover, a similar inflow of the global anomalies is found. The anomaly free condition is equivalent to requiring that the axial $U(1)$ anomaly and the parity anomaly are canceled among the six-dimensional Dirac fermions. Putting the gauge field at the four- dimensional junction and extending it to the bulk using the Yang-Mills gradient flow, as recently proposed by Grabowska and Kaplan, we define the four-dimensional path integral of the target chiral gauge theory.

Six-dimensional regularization of chiral gauge theories

We propose a regularization of four dimensional chiral gauge theories using six-dimensional Dirac fermions. In our formulation, we consider two different mass terms having domain-wall profiles in the fifth and the sixth directions, respectively. A Weyl fermion appears as a localized mode at the junction of two different domain-walls. One domain-wall naturally exhibits the Stora-Zumino chain of the anomaly descent equations, starting from the axial U(1) anomaly in six-dimensions to the gauge anomaly in four-dimensions. Another domain-wall implies a similar inflow of the global anomalies. The anomaly free condition is equivalent to requiring that the axial U(1) anomaly and the parity anomaly are canceled among the six-dimensional Dirac fermions. Since our formulation is based on a massive vector-like fermion determinant, a non-perturbative regularization will be possible on a lattice. Putting the gauge field at the four-dimensional junction and extending it to the bulk using the Yang-Mills gradient flow, as recently proposed by Grabowska and Kaplan, we define the four-dimensional path integral of the target chiral gauge theory.
