Flow equation for the scalar model in the large $N$ expansion and its applications

We study the flow equation of the O($N$) $φ^4$ model in $d$ dimensions at the next-to-leading order (NLO) in the $1/N$ expansion. Using the Schwinger-Dyson equation, we derive 2-pt and 4-pt functions of flowed fields. As the first application of the NLO calculations, we study the running coupling defined from the connected 4-pt function of flowed fields in the $d+1$ dimensional theory. We show in particular that this running coupling has not only the UV fixed point but also an IR fixed point (Wilson-Fisher fixed point) in the 3 dimensional massless scalar theory. As the second application, we calculate the NLO correction to the induced metric in $d+1$ dimensions with $d=3$ in the massless limit. While the induced metric describes a 4-dimensional Euclidean Anti-de-Sitter (AdS) space at the leading order as shown in the previous paper, the NLO corrections make the space asymptotically AdS only in UV and IR limits. Remarkably, while the AdS radius does not receive a NLO correction in the UV limit, the AdS radius decreases at the NLO in the IR limit, which corresponds to the Wilson-Fisher fixed point in the original scalar model in 3 dimensions.

Flow equation for the large $N$ scalar model and induced geometries

We study the proposal that a $d+1$ dimensional induced metric is constructed from a $d$ dimensional field theory using gradient flow. Applying the idea to the O($N$) $φ^4$ model and normalizing the flow field, we have shown in the large $N$ limit that the induced metric is finite and universal in the sense that it does not depend on the details of the flow equation and the original field theory except for the renormalized mass, which is the only relevant quantity in this limit. We have found that the induced metric describes Euclidean Anti-de-Sitter (AdS) space in both ultra-violet (UV) and infra-red (IR) limits of the flow direction, where the radius of the AdS is bigger in the IR than in the UV.

Encoding field theories into gravities

We propose a method to give a $d+1$ geometry from a $d$ dimensional quantum field theory in the large N expansion. We first construct a $d+1$ dimensional field from the $d$ dimensional one using the gradient flow equation, whose flow time $t$ represents the energy scale of the system such that $t\rightarrow 0$ corresponds to the ultra-violet (UV) while $t\rightarrow\infty$ to the infra-red (IR). We define the induced metric using $d+1$ dimensional field operators. We show that the metric defined in this way becomes classical in the large N limit: quantum fluctuations of the metric are suppressed as 1/N due to the large $N$ factorization property. As a concrete example, we apply our method to the O(N) non-linear $σ$ model in two dimensions. We calculate the three dimensional induced metric, which describes an AdS space in the massless limit. We finally discuss several open issues for future investigations.

Generalized Gradient Flow Equation and Its Applications

We propose a generalization of the gradient flow equation for quantum field theories with nonlinearly realized symmetry. Applying the equation to $\mathcal{N}=1$ $SU(N)$ super Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions, we construct a supersymmetric extension of the gradient flow equation. Choosing an appropriate modification term to damp the gauge degree of freedom, we obtain a gradient flow equation which is closed within the Wess-Zumino gauge. We also apply the equation to the $O(N)$ nonlinear sigma model in two dimensions at large $N$, and show that the two point function in terms of the flowed field is non-perturbatively finite.

Bosonization approach for "atomic collapse" in graphene

We study quantum electrodynamics with 2+1 dimensional massless Dirac fermion around a Coulomb impurity. Around a large charge with atomic number Z > 137, the QED vacuum is expected to collapse due to the strong Coulombic force. While the relativistic quantum mechanics fails to make reliable predictions for the fate of the vacuum, the heavy ion collision experiment also does not give clear understanding of this system. Recently, the "atomic collapse" resonances were observed on graphene where an artificial nuclei can be made. In this paper, we present our nonperturbative study of the vacuum structure of the quasiparticles in graphene with a charge impurity which contains multi-body effect using bosonization method.

Geometries from field theories

Gradient Flow of O(N) nonlinear sigma model at large N

We study the gradient flow equation for the O(N) nonlinear sigma model in two dimensions at large N. We parameterize solution of the field at flow time t in powers of bare fields by introducing the coefficient function X_n for the n-th power term (n=1,3,...). Reducing the flow equation by keeping only the contributions at leading order in large N, we obtain a set of equations for X_n's, which can be solved iteratively starting from n=1. For n=1 case, we find an explicit form of the exact solution. Using this solution, we show that the two point function at finite flow time t is finite. As an application, we obtain the non-perturbative running coupling defined from the energy density. We also discuss the solution for n=3 case.

Generalized Gradient Flow Equation and Its Application to Super Yang-Mills Theory

We generalize the gradient flow equation for field theories with nonlinearly realized symmetry. Applying the formalism to super Yang-Mills theory, we construct a supersymmetric extension of the gradient flow equation. It can be shown that the super gauge symmetry is preserved in the gradient flow. Furthermore, choosing an appropriate modification term to damp the gauge degrees of freedom, we obtain a gradient flow equation which is closed within the Wess-Zumino gauge.

Position space formulation for Dirac fermions on honeycomb lattice

We study how to construct Dirac fermion defined on the honeycomb lattice in position space. Starting from the nearest neighbor interaction in tight binding model, we show that the Hamiltonian is constructed by kinetic term and second derivative term of three flavor Dirac fermions in which one flavor has a mass of cutoff order and the other flavors are massless. In this formulation the structure of the Dirac point is simplified so that its uniqueness can be easily shown even if we consider the next-nearest neighbor interaction. We also show the chiral symmetry at finite lattice spacing, which protects the masslessness of the Dirac fermion, and discuss the analogy with the staggered fermion formulation.

Review of lattice results concerning low energy particle physics

We review lattice results related to pion, kaon, D- and B-meson physics with the aim of making them easily accessible to the particle physics community. More specifically, we report on the determination of the light-quark masses, the form factor f+(0), arising in semileptonic K -> pi transition at zero momentum transfer, as well as the decay constant ratio fK/fpi of decay constants and its consequences for the CKM matrix elements Vus and Vud. Furthermore, we describe the results obtained on the lattice for some of the low-energy constants of SU(2)LxSU(2)R and SU(3)LxSU(3)R Chiral Perturbation Theory and review the determination of the BK parameter of neutral kaon mixing. The inclusion of heavy-quark quantities significantly expands the FLAG scope with respect to the previous review. Therefore, for this review, we focus on D- and B-meson decay constants, form factors, and mixing parameters, since these are most relevant for the determination of CKM matrix elements and the global CKM unitarity-triangle fit. In addition we review the status of lattice determinations of the strong coupling constant alpha_s.

Chiral symmetry breaking in lattice brane QED model

We propose a novel lattice calculation of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in QED model with 2+1 dimensional fermion brane. Considering the relativistic action with gauge symmetry we rigorously carry out path integral in Monte-Carlo simulation with Fermi-velocity relevant to effective coupling constant. We numerically show the evidence of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in strong coupling region with chiral condensate, low-lying mode distribution and Nambu-Goldstone boson spectrum in bare Fermi-velocty $v=0.1$. This is a feasible study to investigate the phase structure of Graphene.

Conformal fixed point of SU(3) gauge theory with 12 fundamental fermions

We study the infrared properties of SU(3) gauge theory coupled to 12 massless Dirac fermions in the fundamental representation. The renormalized running coupling constant is calculated in the Twisted Polyakov loop scheme on the lattice. From the step-scaling analysis, we find that the infrared behavior of the theory is governed by a non-trivial fixed point.

QCD Parity violation in a quarkonium via SUSY

Supersymmetric standard model has a parity violation in QCD through chiral quark-squark-gluino interactions with non-degenerate masses between left-handed and right-handed squarks. Since experiments have not show any parity violations in QCD yet, a bound for the mass degeneracy between left-handed and right-handed squarks should exist. In this paper we try to obtain this bound for each squark. At first, we investigate a non-degeneracy bound between $m_{\tilde{c}_L}$ and $m_{\tilde{c}_R}$ from experimental data of charmonium decay. Next, we estimate the non-degeneracy bounds for $\tilde{u}$ and $\tilde{d}$ from nucleon-meson scattering data, and comment on other squarks.

The Infrared behavior of SU(3) Nf=12 gauge theory -about the existence of conformal fixed point-

Incorporated with twisted boundary condition, Polyakov loop correlators can give a definition of the renormalized coupling. We employ this scheme for the step scaling method (with step size s = 2) in the search of conformal fixed point of SU(3) gauge theory with 12 massless flavors. Staggered fermion and plaquette gauge action are used in the lattice simulation with six different lattice sizes, L/a = 20, 16, 12, 10, 8 and 6. For the largest lattice size, L/a = 20, we used a large number of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) and accumulated 3,000,000 trajectories in total. We found that the step scaling function sigma (u) is consistent with u in the low-energy region. This means the existence of conformal fixed point. Some details of our analysis and simulations will also be presented.

Search for the IR fixed point in the Twisted Polyakov Loop scheme (II)

We measure the renormalized coupling in the Twisted Polyakov loop scheme for SU(3) gauge theory coupled with $N_f=12$ fundamental fermions. To find the infrared fixed point of this theory, we focus on the step scaling function for the renormalized coupling. We take the continuum limit using the linear function of $(a/L)^2$ and a constant fit function. We find that there is a sizeable systematic error due to the choice of the continuum extrapolation function in the low energy region. We will give some directions to reduce the systematic errors.

Study of the scaling properties in SU(2) gauge theory with eight flavors

We present our preliminary study of the SU(2) gauge theory with 8 flavors of fermions in fundamental representation. This theory could be a candidate of the gauge theory with conformal fixed point. By using Wilson/Polyakov loop in a finite volume with twisted boundary conditions, we study the renormalization group flow of the gauge coupling constant. Our calculation gives consistent result with the perturbative prediction of the running coupling in the weak coupling region. We investigate a possible signal for conformal behavior in the strong coupling region.

Flavor Structure of the Three Site Higgsless Model

We study the flavor structure in the three site Higgsless model. In this model, the gauge bosons and fermions have heavy partners, coming from the Kaluza-Klein excitation in the dimensional deconstruction picture. The yukawa couplings are introduced in a way to minimize the flavor chaning neutral current in the light sector at the tree level. Due to the flavor mixing between the light and the heavy partner fields, new effects on FCNC's appear at one-loop level. As an example of such FCNC processes, we calculate the contribution to the b -> s gamma amplitude in the three site Higgsless model. Interestingly, heavy particles which exist in the three site Higgsless model do not completely decouple in the heavy-mass limit. One-loop level b -> s gamma amplitude is calculated by considering all possible combinations of particles in the loop, then it is compared to the experiment. The result shows that the central value of the B -> X_s gamma branching ratio in the three site Higgsless model takes closer value to its experimental central value as one takes the larger value of a free parameter, \varepsilon_{tR}, within a range allowed by the precision electroweak measurement.

A new scheme for the running coupling constant in gauge theories using Wilson loops

We propose a new renormalization scheme of the running coupling constant in general gauge theories using the Wilson loops. The renormalized coupling constant is obtained from the Creutz ratio in lattice simulations and the corresponding perturbative coefficient at the leading order. The latter can be calculated by adopting the zeta-function resummation techniques. We perform a benchmark test of our scheme in quenched QCD with the plaquette gauge action. The running of the coupling constant is determined by applying the step-scaling procedure. Using several methods to improve the statistical accuracy, we show that the running coupling constant can be determined in a wide range of energy scales with relatively small number of gauge configurations.
