Bayesian and Monte Carlo approaches to estimating uncertainty for the measurement of the bound-state $\beta$ decay of $^{205}\mathrm{Tl}^{81+}$

The measurement of the bound-state $\beta$ decay of $^{205}\mathrm{Tl}^{81+}$ at the Experimental Storage Ring at GSI, Darmstadt, has recently been reported with substantial impact on the use of $^{205}\mathrm{Pb}$ as an early Solar System chronometer and the low-energy measurement of the solar neutrino spectrum via the LOREX project. Due to the technical challenges in producing a high-purity $^{205}\mathrm{Tl}^{81+}$ secondary beam, a robust statistical method needed to be developed to estimate the variation in the contaminant $^{205}\mathrm{Pb}^{81+}$ produced in the fragmentation reaction, which was subsequently transmitted and stored in the ESR. Here we show that Bayesian and Monte Carlo methods produced comparable estimates for the contaminant variation, each with unique advantages and challenges given the complex statistical problems for this experiment. We recommend the adoption of such methods in future experiments that exhibit unknown statistical fluctuations.

Ionization in a laser assisted ion-ion collision

The ionization of a hydrogen-like heavy ion by impact of a charged projectile under simultaneous irradiation by a short laser pulse is investigated within the non-perturbative approach, based on numerical solutions of the time-dependent Dirac equation. Special emphasis is placed on the question of whether the laser- and impact-ionization channels interfere with each other, and how this intereference affects the ionization probability. To answer this question we performed detailed calculations for the laser-assisted collisions between hydrogen-like $Pb^{81+}$ and alpha particles. The results of the calculations clearly indicate that for the experimentally relevant set of (collision and laser) parameters, the interference contribution can reach 10% and can be easily controlled by varying the laser frequency.

Ground-state hyperfine splitting of B-like ions in high-Z region

The hyperfine splitting of the ground state of selected B-like ions within the range of nuclear charge numbers $Z=49-83$ is investigated in detail. The rigorous QED approach together with the large-scale configuration-interaction Dirac-Fock-Sturm method are employed for the evaluation of the interelectronic-interaction contributions of first and higher orders in $1/Z$. The screened QED corrections are evaluated to all orders in $αZ$ by using an effective potential. The influence of nuclear magnetization distribution is taken into account within the single-particle nuclear model.

Electron-positron pair creation in low-energy collisions of heavy bare nuclei

A new method for calculations of electron-positron pair-creation probabilities in low-energy heavy-ion collisions is developed. The approach is based on the propagation of all one-electron states via the numerical solving of the time-dependent Dirac equation in the monopole approximation. The electron wave functions are represented as finite sums of basis functions constructed from B-splines using the dual-kinetic-balance technique. The calculations of the created particle numbers and the positron energy spectra are performed for the collisions of bare nuclei at the energies near the Coulomb barrier with the Rutherford trajectory and for different values of the nuclear charge and the impact parameter. To examine the role of the spontaneous pair creation the collisions with a modified velocity and with a time delay are also considered. The obtained results are compared with the previous calculations and the possibility of observation of the spontaneous pair creation is discussed.

Parity nonconservation effect in the resonance elastic electron scattering on heavy He-like ions

We investigate the parity nonconservation effect in the elastic scattering of polarized electrons on heavy He-like ions, being initially in the ground state. The enhancement of the parity violation is achieved by tuning the energy of the incident electron in resonance with quasidegenerate doubly-excited states of the corresponding Li-like ion. We consider two possible scenarios. In the first one we assume that the polarization of the scattered electron is measured, while in the second one it is not detected.

Relativistic calculations of the U91+(1s)-U92+ collision using the finite basis set of cubic Hermite splines on a lattice in coordinate space

A new method for solving the time-dependent two-center Dirac equation is developed. The approach is based on the using of the finite basis of cubic Hermite splines on a three-dimensional lattice in the coordinate space. The relativistic calculations of the excitation and charge-transfer probabilities in the U91+(1s)-U92+ collisions in two and three dimensional approaches are performed. The obtained results are compared with our previous calculations employing the Dirac-Sturm basis sets [I.I. Tupitsyn et al., Phys. Rev. A 82, 042701 (2010)]. The role of the negative-energy Dirac spectrum is investigated within the monopole approximation.

Parity nonconservation effect in the dielectronic recombination of polarized electrons with heavy He-like ions

We investigate the parity nonconservation (PNC) effect in the dielectronic recombination (DR) of a polarized electron with a heavy He-like ion into doubly-excited $((1s 2p_{1/2})_{0} nκ)_{1/2}$ and $\left(\left(1s 2s\right)_{0} nκ\right)_{1/2}$ states of Li-like ion. We determine the nuclear charge number $Z$ for which these opposite-parity levels are near to cross and, therefore, the PNC effect will be significantly enhanced. Calculations are performed for quantum numbers $n \geq 4$ and $κ= \pm 1$.

Relativistic calculations of charge transfer probabilities in U92+ - U91+(1s) collisions using the basis set of cubic Hermite splines

A new approach for solving the time-dependent two-center Dirac equation is presented. The method is based on using the finite basis set of cubic Hermite splines on a two-dimensional lattice. The Dirac equation is treated in rotating reference frame. The collision of U92+ (as a projectile) and U91+ (as a target) is considered at energy E_lab=6 MeV/u. The charge transfer probabilities are calculated for different values of the impact parameter. The obtained results are compared with the previous calculations [I. I. Tupitsyn et al., Phys. Rev. A 82, 042701 (2010)], where a method based on atomic-like Dirac-Sturm orbitals was employed. This work can provide a new tool for investigation of quantum electrodynamics effects in heavy-ion collisions near the supercritical regime.

Relativistic calculations of the K-K charge transfer and K-vacancy production probabilities in low-energy ion-atom collisions

The previously developed technique for evaluation of charge-transfer and electron-excitation processes in low-energy heavy-ion collisions [I.I. Tupitsyn et al., Phys. Rev. A 82, 042701(2010)] is extended to collisions of ions with neutral atoms. The method employs the active electron approximation, in which only the active electron participates in the charge transfer and excitation processes while the passive electrons provide the screening DFT potential. The time-dependent Dirac wave function of the active electron is represented as a linear combination of atomic-like Dirac-Fock-Sturm orbitals, localized at the ions (atoms). The screening DFT potential is calculated using the overlapping densities of each ions (atoms), derived from the atomic orbitals of the passive electrons. The atomic orbitals are generated by solving numerically the one-center Dirac-Fock and Dirac-Fock-Sturm equations by means of a finite-difference approach with the potential taken as the sum of the exact reference ion (atom) Dirac-Fock potential and of the Coulomb potential from the other ion within the monopole approximation. The method developed is used to calculate the K-K charge transfer and K-vacancy production probabilties for the Ne$(1s^2 2s^2 2p^6)$ -- F$^{8+}(1s)$ collisions at the F$^{8+}(1s)$ projectile energies 130 keV/u and 230 keV/u. The obtained results are compared with experimental data and other theoretical calculations. The K-K charge transfer and K-vacancy production probabilities are also calculated for the Xe -- Xe$^{53+}(1s)$ collision.

Polarization studies on the two-step radiative recombination of highly-charged, heavy ions

The radiative recombination of a free electron into an excited state of a bare, high-Z ion is studied, together with its subsequent decay, within the framework of the density matrix theory and Dirac's relativistic equation. Special attention is paid to the polarization and angular correlations between the recombination and the decay photons. In order to perform a systematic analysis of these correlations the general expression for the double-differential recombination cross section is obtained by making use of the resonance approximation. Based on this expression, detailed computations for the linear polarization of x-ray photons emitted in the (e, 2γ) two-step recombination of uranium ions U^92+ are carried out for a wide range of projectile energies.

Ionization of highly charged relativistic ions by neutral atoms and ions

Ionization of highly charged relativistic ions by neutral atoms and ions is considered. Numerical results of recently developed computer codes based on the relativistic Born and the equivalent-photon approximations are presented. The ionization of the outer shells dominate. For the outer projectile electron shells, which give the main contribution to the process, the non-relativistic Schrödinger wave functions can be used. The formulae for the non-relativistic reduction of the Dirac matrix-elements are obtained for ionization of electrons with arbitrary quantum numbers $n$ and $\ell$.

Radiative recombination of bare Bi83+: Experiment versus theory

Electron-ion recombination of completely stripped Bi83+ was investigated at the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) of the GSI in Darmstadt. It was the first experiment of this kind with a bare ion heavier than argon. Absolute recombination rate coefficients have been measured for relative energies between ions and electrons from 0 up to about 125 eV. In the energy range from 15 meV to 125 eV a very good agreement is found between the experimental result and theory for radiative recombination (RR). However, below 15 meV the experimental rate increasingly exceeds the RR calculation and at Erel = 0 eV it is a factor of 5.2 above the expected value. For further investigation of this enhancement phenomenon the electron density in the interaction region was set to 1.6E6/cm3, 3.2E6/cm3 and 4.7E6/cm3. This variation had no significant influence on the recombination rate. An additional variation of the magnetic guiding field of the electrons from 70 mT to 150 mT in steps of 1 mT resulted in periodic oscillations of the rate which are accompanied by considerable changes of the transverse electron temperature.
