The Unruh Quantum Otto Engine

We introduce a quantum heat engine performing an Otto cycle by using the thermal properties of the quantum vacuum. Since Hawking and Unruh, it has been established that the vacuum space, either near a black hole or for an accelerated observer, behaves as a bath of thermal radiation. In this work, we present a fully quantum Otto cycle, which relies on the Unruh effect for a single quantum bit (qubit) in contact with quantum vacuum fluctuations. By using the notions of quantum thermodynamics and perturbation theory we obtain that the quantum vacuum can exchange heat and produce work on the qubit. Moreover, we obtain the efficiency and derive the conditions to have both a thermodynamic and a kinematic cycle in terms of the initial populations of the excited state, which define a range of allowed accelerations for the Unruh engine.

Force and torque of a string on a pulley

Every university introductory physics course considers the problem of Atwood's machine taking into account the mass of the pulley. In the usual treatment the tensions at the two ends of the string are offhandedly taken to act on the pulley and be responsible for its rotation. However such a free-body diagram of the forces on the pulley is not {\it a priori} justified, inducing students to construct wrong hypotheses such as that the string transfers its tension to the pulley or that some symmetry is in operation. We reexamine this problem by integrating the contact forces between each element of the string and the pulley and show that although the pulley does behave as if the tensions were acting on it, this comes only as the end result of a detailed analysis. We also address the question of how much friction is needed to prevent the string from slipping over the pulley. Finally, we deal with the case in which the string is on the verge of sliding and show that this will never happen unless certain conditions are met by the coefficient of friction and the masses involved.

Maxwell's demons in multipartite quantum correlated systems

We investigate the extraction of thermodynamic work by a Maxwell's demon in a multipartite quantum correlated system. We begin by adopting the standard model of a Maxwell's demon as a Turing machine, either in a classical or quantum setup depending on its ability of implementing classical or quantum conditional dynamics, respectively. Then, for an n-partite system (A_1, A_2, ..., A_n), we introduce a protocol of work extraction that bounds the advantage of the quantum demon over its classical counterpart through the amount of multipartite quantum correlation present in the system, as measured by a thermal version of the global quantum discord. This result is illustrated for an arbitrary n-partite pure state of qubits with Schmidt decomposition, where it is shown that the thermal global quantum discord exactly quantifies the quantum advantage. Moreover, we also consider the work extraction via mixed multipartite states, where examples of tight upper bounds can be obtained.

Overcoming ambiguities in classical and quantum correlation measures

We identify ambiguities in the available frameworks for defining quantum, classical, and total correlations as measured by discordlike quantifiers. More specifically, we determine situations for which either classical or quantum correlations are not uniquely defined due to degeneracies arising from the optimization procedure over the state space. In order to remove such degeneracies, we introduce a general approach where correlations are independently defined, escaping therefore from a degenerate subspace. As an illustration, we analyze the trace-norm geometric quantum discord for two-qubit Bell-diagonal states.

Effects of spontaneous symmetry break in the origin of non-analytic behavior of entanglement at quantum phase transitions

We present an example where Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking may effect not only the behavior of the entanglement at Quantum Phase Transitions, but also the origin of the non-analyticity. In particular, in the XXZ model, we study the non analyticities in the concurrence between two spins, which was claimed to be accidental, since it had its origin in the optimization involved in the concurrence definition. We show that when one takes in account the effect of the Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking, even tough the values of the entanglement measure does not change, the origin the the non-analytical behavior changes: it is not due to the optimization process anymore and in this sense it is a "natural" non-analyticity. This is a much more subtle influence of the Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking not noticed before. However the non-analytical behavior still suggests a second order quantum phase transition and not the first order that occurs and we explain why. We also show that the value of entanglement between one site and the rest of the chain does change when taking into account the Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking.

Monogamy of entanglement of formation

It is well known that a particle cannot freely share entanglement with two or more particles. This restriction is generally called monogamy. However the formal quantification of such restriction is only known for some measures of entanglement and for two-level systems. The first and broadly known monogamy relation was established by Coffman, Kundu, and Wootters for the square of the concurrence. Since then, it is usually said that the entanglement of formation is not monogamous, as it does not obey the same relation. We show here that despite that, the entanglement of formation cannot be freely shared and therefore should be said to be monogamous. Furthermore, the square of the entanglement of formation does obey the same relation of the squared concurrence, a fact recently noted for three particles and extended here for N particles. Therefore the entanglement of formation is as monogamous as the concurrence. We also numerically study how the entanglement is distributed in pure states of three qubits and the relation between the sum of the bipartite entanglement and the classical correlation.

Nonviolation of Bell's Inequality in Translation Invariant Systems

The nature of quantum correlations in strongly correlated systems has been a subject of intense research. In particular, it has been realized that entanglement and quantum discord are present at quantum phase transitions and able to characterize it. Surprisingly, it has been shown for a number of different systems that qubit pairwise states, even when highly entangled, do not violate Bell's inequalities, being in this sense local. Here we show that such a local character of quantum correlations is in fact general for translation invariant systems and has its origins in the monogamy trade-off obeyed by tripartite Bell correlations. We illustrate this result in a quantum spin chain with a soft breaking of translation symmetry. In addition, we extend the monogamy inequality to the $N$-qubit scenario, showing that the bound increases with $N$ and providing examples of its saturation through uniformly generated random pure states.

Geometric classical and total correlations via trace distance

We introduce the concepts of geometric classical and total correlations through Schatten 1-norm (trace norm), which is the only Schatten p-norm able to ensure a well-defined geometric measure of correlations. In particular, we derive the analytical expressions for the case of two-qubit Bell-diagonal states, discussing the superadditivity of geometric correlations. As an illustration, we compare our results with the entropic correlations, discussing both their hierarchy and monotonicity properties. Moreover, we apply the geometric correlations to investigate the ground state of spin chains in the thermodynamic limit. In contrast to the entropic quantifiers, we show that the classical correlation is the only source of 1-norm geometric correlation that is able to signaling an infinite-order quantum phase transition.

Generalized quantum microcanonical ensemble from random matrix product states

We propose a tensor network algorithm for the efficient sampling of quantum pure states belonging to a generalized microcanonical ensemble. The algorithm consists in an adaptation of the power method to a recently introduced ensemble of random matrix product states. The microcanonical ensemble that we consider is characterized by the fact that the participating energy eigenstates are not required to have identical statistical weight. To test the method we apply it to the Heisenberg model with an external magnetic field, and we find that the magnetization curves, due to the microcanonical constraint, are qualitatively different from those obtained in the canonical ensemble. Possible future applications include the study of isolated quantum systems evolving after a quantum quench.

Monogamy of Quantum Discord by Multipartite Correlations

We introduce a monogamy inequality for quantum correlations, which implies that the sum of pairwise quantum correlations is upper limited by the amount of multipartite quantum correlations as measured by the global quantum discord. This monogamy bound holds either for pure or mixed quantum states provided that bipartite quantum discord does not increase under discard of subsystems. We illustrate the monogamy behavior for multipartite pure states with Schmidt decomposition as well as for W-GHZ mixed states. As a by-product, we apply the monogamy bound to investigate residual multipartite correlations.

Quantum discord in the ground state of spin chains

The ground state of a quantum spin chain is a natural playground for investigating correlations. Nevertheless, not all correlations are genuinely of quantum nature. Here we review the recent progress to quantify the 'quantumness' of the correlations throughout the phase diagram of quantum spin systems. Focusing to one spatial dimension, we discuss the behavior of quantum discord close to quantum phase transitions. In contrast to the two-spin entanglement, pairwise discord is effectively long-ranged in critical regimes. Besides the features of quantum phase transitions, quantum discord is especially feasible to explore the factorization phenomenon, giving rise to nontrivial ground classical states in quantum systems. The effects of spontaneous symmetry breaking are also discussed as well as the identification of quantum critical points through correlation witnesses.

Bell inequalities and entanglement at quantum phase transition in the XXZ Model

Entanglement and violation of Bell inequalities are aspects of quantum nonlocality that have been often confused in the past. It is now known that this equivalence is only true for pure states. Even though almost all the studies of quantum correlations at quantum phase transitions deal only with entanglement, we here argue that Bell inequalities can also reveal a general quantum phase transition. This is also shown for a particular case of two spin-1/2 particles in an infinite one-dimensional chain described by the XXZ model. In this case, the Bell inequality is able to signal not only the first-order phase transition, but also the infinite-order Kosterlitz-Thouless quantum phase transition, which cannot be revealed either by the energy of the system nor by the bipartite entanglement. We also show that although the nearest-neighbor spins are entangled, they, unexpectedly, never violate the Bell inequality. This indicates that the type of entanglement which is relevant for quantum phase transition is not trivial, i.e., it cannot be revealed by the Bell inequality.

Witnessing nonclassical multipartite states

We investigate a witness for nonclassical multipartite states based on their disturbance under local measurements. The witness operator provides a sufficient condition for nonclassicality that coincides with a nonvanishing global quantum discord, but it does not demand an extremization procedure. Moreover, for the case of Z_2-symmetric systems, we rewrite the witness in terms of correlation functions so that classicality is found to necessarily require either vanishing magnetization in the invariant axis or isotropy of the two-point function in the transverse spin plane. We illustrate our results in quantum spin chains, where a characterization of factorized ground states (with spontaneously broken Z_2 symmetry) is achieved. As a by-product, the witness will also be shown to indicate a second-order quantum phase transitions, which will be illustrated both for the XY and Ashkin-Teller spin chains.

Statistical properties of random matrix product states

We study the set of random matrix product states (RMPS) introduced in arXiv:0908.3877 as a tool to explore foundational aspects of quantum statistical mechanics. In the present work, we provide an accurate numerical and analytical investigation of the properties of RMPS. We calculate the average state of the ensemble in the non-homogeneous case, and numerically check the validity of this result. We also suggest using RMPS as a tool to approximate properties of general quantum random states. The numerical simulations presented here support the accuracy and efficiency of this approximation. These results suggest that any generalized canonical state can be approximated with high probability by the reduced density matrix of a random MPS, if the average MPS coincide with the associated microcanonical ensemble.

Typicality in random matrix product states

Recent results suggest that the use of ensembles in Statistical Mechanics may not be necessary for isolated systems, since typically the states of the Hilbert space would have properties similar to the ones of the ensemble. Nevertheless, it is often argued that most of the states of the Hilbert space are non-physical and not good descriptions of realistic systems. Therefore, to better understand the actual power of typicality it is important to ask if it is also a property of a set of physically relevant states. Here we address this issue, studying if and how typicality emerges in the set of matrix product states. We show analytically that typicality occurs for the expectation value of subsystems' observables when the rank of the matrix product state scales polynomially with the size of the system with a power greater than two. We illustrate this result numerically and present some indications that typicality may appear already for a linear scaling of the rank of the matrix product state.

Monogamy Inequality and Residual Entanglement of Three Qubits under Decoherence

Exploring an analytical expression for the convex roof of the pure state squared concurrence for rank 2 mixed states the entanglement of a system of three particles under decoherence is studied, using the monogamy inequality for mixed states and the residual entanglement obtained from it. The monogamy inequality is investigated both for the concurrence and the negativity in the case of local independent phase damping channel acting on generalized GHZ states of three particles and the local independent amplitude damping channel acting on generalized W state of three particles. It is shown that the bipartite entanglement between one qubit and the rest has a qualitative similar behavior to the entanglement between individual qubits, and that the residual entanglement in terms of the negativity cannot be a good entanglement measure for mixed states, since it can increase under local decoherence.

Symmetry breaking effects upon bipartite and multipartite entanglement in the XY model

We analyze the bipartite and multipartite entanglement for the ground state of the one-dimensional XY model in a transverse magnetic field in the thermodynamical limit. We explicitly take into account the spontaneous symmetry breaking in order to explore the relation between entanglement and quantum phase transitions. As a result we show that while both bipartite and multipartite entanglement can be enhanced by spontaneous symmetry breaking deep into the ferromagnetic phase, only the latter is affected by it in the vicinity of the critical point. This result adds to the evidence that multipartite, and not bipartite, entanglement is the fundamental indicator of long range correlations in quantum phase transitions.
