Hypertranscendence and linear difference equations

After Hölder proved his classical theorem about the Gamma function, there has been a whole bunch of results showing that solutions to linear difference equations tend to be hypertranscendental i.e. they cannot be solution to an algebraic differential equation). In this paper, we obtain the first complete results for solutions to general linear difference equations associated with the shift operator $x\mapsto x+h$ ($h\in\mathbb{C}^*$), the $q$-difference operator $x\mapsto qx$ ($q\in\mathbb{C}^*$ not a root of unity), and the Mahler operator $x\mapsto x^p$ ($p\geq 2$ integer). The only restriction is that we constrain our solutions to be expressed as (possibly ramified) Laurent series in the variable $x$ with complex coefficients (or in the variable $1/x$ in some special case associated with the shift operator). Our proof is based on the parametrized difference Galois theory initiated by Hardouin and Singer. We also deduce from our main result a general statement about algebraic independence of values of Mahler functions and their derivatives at algebraic points.

Walks in the quarter plane, genus zero case

We use Galois theory of difference equations to study the nature of the generating series of (weighted) walks in the quarter plane with genus zero kernel curve. Using this approach, we prove that the generating series do not satisfy any nontrivial (possibly nonlinear) algebraic differential equation with rational coefficients.

Hypertranscendence of solutions of Mahler equations

The last years have seen a growing interest from mathematicians in Mahler functions. This class of functions includes the generating series of the automatic sequences. The present paper is concerned with the following problem, which is omnipresent in combinatorics: a set of Mahler functions $u_{1},...,u_{n}$ being given, are $u_{1},...,u_{n}$ and their successive derivatives algebraically independent? In this paper, we give general criteria ensuring an affirmative answer to this question. We apply our main results to the generating series attached to the so-called Baum-Sweet and Rudin-Shapiro automatic sequences. In particular, we show that these series are hyperalgebraically independent, i.e., that these series and their successive derivatives are algebraically independent. Our approach relies of the parametrized difference Galois theory (in this context, the algebro-differential relations between the solutions of a given Mahler equation are reflected by a linear differential algebraic group).

Isomonodromic deformation of q-difference equations and confluence

We study isomonodromic deformation of Fuchsian linear q-difference systems. Furthermore, we are looking of the behaviour of the Birkhoff connexion matrix when q goes to $1$. We use our results to study the convergence of the Birkhoff connexion matrix that appears in the definition of the q-analogue of the sixth Painlevé equation.

Differential transcendence & algebraicity criteria for the series counting weighted quadrant walks

We consider weighted small step walks in the positive quadrant, and provide algebraicity and differential transcendence results for the underlying generating functions: we prove that depending on the probabilities of allowed steps, certain of the generating functions are algebraic over the field of rational functions, while some others do not satisfy any algebraic differential equation with rational function coefficients. Our techniques involve differential Galois theory for difference equations as well as complex analysis (Weierstrass parameterization of elliptic curves). We also extend to the weighted case many key intermediate results, as a theorem of analytic continuation of the generating functions.

Computing solutions of linear Mahler equations

Mahler equations relate evaluations of the same function $f$ at iterated $b$th powers of the variable. They arise in particular in the study of automatic sequences and in the complexity analysis of divide-and-conquer algorithms. Recently, the problem of solving Mahler equations in closed form has occurred in connection with number-theoretic questions. A difficulty in the manipulation of Mahler equations is the exponential blow-up of degrees when applying a Mahler operator to a polynomial. In this work, we present algorithms for solving linear Mahler equations for series, polynomials, and rational functions, and get polynomial-time complexity under a mild assumption. Incidentally, we develop an algorithm for computing the gcrd of a family of linear Mahler operators.

On the nature of the generating series of walks in the quarter plane

In the present paper, we introduce a new approach, relying on the Galois theory of difference equations, to study the nature of the generating series of walks in the quarter plane. Using this approach, we are not only able to recover many of the recent results about these series, but also to go beyond them. For instance, we give for the first time hypertranscendency results, {\it i.e.}, we prove that certain of these generating series do not satisfy any nontrivial nonlinear algebraic differential equation with rational coefficients.

Real difference Galois theory

In this paper, we develop a difference Galois theory in the setting of real fields. After proving the existence and uniqueness of the real Picard-Vessiot extension, we define the real difference Galois group and prove a Galois correspondence.

$q$-Borel-Laplace summation for $q$-difference equations with two slopes

In this paper, we consider linear $q$-difference systems with coefficients that are germs of meromorphic functions, with Newton polygon that has two slopes. Then, we explain how to compute similar meromorphic gauge transformations than those appearing in the work of Bugeaud, using a $q$-analogue of the Borel-Laplace summation.

Liouville integrability: an effective Morales-Ramis-Simó theorem

Consider a complex Hamiltonian system and an integral curve. In this paper, we give an effective and efficient procedure to put the variational equation of any order along the integral curve in reduced form provided that the previous one is in reduced form with an abelian Lie algebra. Thus, we obtain an effective way to check the Morales-Ramis-Simó criterion for testing meromorphic Liouville integrability of Hamiltonian systems.

q-Deformation of Meromorphic Solutions of Linear Differential Equations

In this paper, we consider the behaviour, when $q$ goes to $1$, of the set of a convenient basis of meromorphic solutions of a family of linear $q$-difference equations. In particular, we show that, under convenient assumptions, such basis of meromorphic solutions converges, when $q$ goes to $1$, to a basis of meromorphic solutions of a linear differential equation. We also explain that given a linear differential equation of order at least two, which has a Newton polygon that has only slopes of multiplicities one, and a basis of meromorphic solutions, we may build a family of linear $q$-difference equations that discretizes the linear differential equation, such that a convenient family of basis of meromorphic solutions is a $q$-deformation of the given basis of meromorphic solutions of the linear differential equation.

Confluence of meromorphic solutions of q-difference equations

In this paper, we consider a q-analogue of the Borel-Laplace summation where q>1 is a real parameter. In particular, we show that the Borel-Laplace summation of a divergent power series solution of a linear differential equation can be uniformly approximated on a convenient sector, by a meromorphic solution of a corresponding family of linear q-difference equations. We perform the computations for the basic hypergeometric series. Following J. Sauloy, we prove how a fundamental set of solutions of a linear differential equation can be uniformly approximated on a convenient domain by a fundamental set of solutions of a corresponding family of linear q-difference equations. This leads us to the approximations of Stokes matrices and monodromy matrices of the linear differential equation by matrices with entries that are invariants by the multiplication by q.

Galois Groups of Difference Equations of Order Two on Elliptic Curves

This paper is concerned with difference equations on elliptic curves. We establish some general properties of the difference Galois groups of equations of order two, and give applications to the calculation of some difference Galois groups. For instance, our results combined with a result from transcendence theory due to Schneider allow us to identify a large class of discrete Lamé equations with difference Galois group $\operatorname{GL}_{2}(\mathbb C)$.

Building meromorphic solutions of $q$-difference equations using a Borel-Laplace summation

After introducing q-analogues of the Borel and Laplace transformations, we prove that to every formal power series solution of a linear q-difference equation with rational coefficients, we may apply several q-Borel and Laplace transformations of convenient orders and convenient direction in order to construct a solution of the same equation that is meromorphic on $\mathbb{C}^{*}$. We use this theorem to construct explicitly an invertible matrix solution of a linear q-difference system with rational coefficients, of which entries are meromorphic on $\mathbb{C}^{*}$. Moreover, when the system is put in the Birkhoff-Guenther normal form, we prove that the solutions we compute are exactly the same as the one constructed by Ramis, Sauloy and Zhang.

A density theorem for parameterized differential Galois theory

We study parameterized linear differential equations with coefficients depending meromorphically upon the parameters. As a main result, analogously to the unparameterized density theorem of Ramis, we show that the parameterized monodromy, the parameterized exponential torus and the parameterized Stokes operators are topological generators in Kolchin topology, for the parameterized differential Galois group introduced by Cassidy and Singer. We prove an analogous result for the global parameterized differential Galois group, which generalizes a result by Mitschi and Singer. These authors give also a necessary condition on a group for being a global parameterized differential Galois group; as a corollary of the density theorem, we prove that their condition is also sufficient. As an application, we give a characterization of completely integrable equations, and we give a partial answer to a question of Sibuya about the transcendence properties of a given Stokes matrix. Moreover, using a parameterized Hukuhara-Turrittin theorem, we show that the Galois group descends to a smaller field, whose field of constants is not differentially closed.
