The characterizing properties of (signless) Laplacian permanental polynomials of bicyclic graphs

Let $G$ be a graph with $n$ vertices, and let $L(G)$ and $Q(G)$ be the Laplacian matrix and signless Laplacian matrix of $G$, respectively. The polynomial $π(L(G);x)={\rm per}(xI-L(G))$ (resp. $π(Q(G);x)={\rm per}(xI-Q(G))$) is called {\em Laplacian permanental polynomial} (resp. {\em signless Laplacian permanental polynomial}) of $G$. In this paper, we show that two classes of bicyclic graphs are determined by their (signless) Laplacian permanental polynomials.

Geometric origin of the galaxies' dark side

We show that Einstein's conformal gravity is able to explain simply on the geometric ground the galactic rotation curves without need to introduce any modification in both the gravitational as well as in the matter sector of the theory. The geometry of each galaxy is described by a metric obtained making a singular rescaling of the Schwarzschild's spacetime. The new exact solution, which is asymptotically Anti-de Sitter, manifests an unattainable singularity at infinity that can not be reached in finite proper time, namely, the spacetime is geodetically complete. It deserves to be notice that we here think different from the usual. Indeed, instead of making the metric singularity-free, we make it apparently but harmlessly even more singular then the Schwarzschild's one. Finally, it is crucial to point that the Weyl's conformal symmetry is spontaneously broken to the new singular vacuum rather then the asymptotically flat Schwarzschild's one. The metric, is unique according to: the null energy condition, the zero acceleration for photons in the Newtonian regime, and the homogeneity of the Universe at large scales. Once the matter is conformally coupled to gravity, the orbital velocity for a probe star in the galaxy turns out to be asymptotically constant consistently with the observations and the Tully-Fisher relation. Therefore, we compare our model with a sample of 175 galaxies and we show that our velocity profile very well interpolates the galactic rotation-curves for a proper choice of the only free parameter in the metric and the the mass to luminosity ratios, which turn out to be close to 1 consistently with the absence of dark matter.

Lévy walk dynamics in non-static media

Almost all the media the particles move in are non-static. Depending on the expected resolution of the studied dynamics and the amplitude of the displacement of the media, sometimes the non-static behaviours of the media can not be ignored. In this paper, we build the model describing Lévy walks in non-static media, where the physical and comoving coordinates are connected by scale factor. We derive the equation governing the probability density function of the position of the particles in comoving coordinate. Using the Hermite orthogonal polynomial expansions, some statistical properties are obtained, such as mean squared displacements (MSDs) in both coordinates and kurtosis. For some representative non-static media and Lévy walks, the asymptotic behaviors of MSDs in both coordinates are analyzed in detail. The stationary distributions and mean first passage time for some cases are also discussed through numerical simulations.

Mid-flight Forecasting for CPA Lines in Online Advertising

For Verizon MediaDemand Side Platform(DSP), forecasting of ad campaign performance not only feeds key information to the optimization server to allow the system to operate on a high-performance mode, but also produces actionable insights to the advertisers. In this paper, the forecasting problem for CPA lines in the middle of the flight is investigated by taking the bidding mechanism into account. The proposed methodology generates relationships between various key performance metrics and optimization signals. It can also be used to estimate the sensitivity of ad campaign performance metrics to the adjustments of optimization signal, which is important to the design of a campaign management system. The relationship between advertiser spends and effective Cost Per Action(eCPA) is also characterized, which serves as a guidance for mid-flight line adjustment to the advertisers. Several practical issues in implementation, such as downsampling of the dataset, are also discussed in the paper. At last, the forecasting results are validated against actual deliveries and demonstrates promising accuracy.

An Efficient Deep Distribution Network for Bid Shading in First-Price Auctions

Since 2019, most ad exchanges and sell-side platforms (SSPs), in the online advertising industry, shifted from second to first price auctions. Due to the fundamental difference between these auctions, demand-side platforms (DSPs) have had to update their bidding strategies to avoid bidding unnecessarily high and hence overpaying. Bid shading was proposed to adjust the bid price intended for second-price auctions, in order to balance cost and winning probability in a first-price auction setup. In this study, we introduce a novel deep distribution network for optimal bidding in both open (non-censored) and closed (censored) online first-price auctions. Offline and online A/B testing results show that our algorithm outperforms previous state-of-art algorithms in terms of both surplus and effective cost per action (eCPX) metrics. Furthermore, the algorithm is optimized in run-time and has been deployed into VerizonMedia DSP as production algorithm, serving hundreds of billions of bid requests per day. Online A/B test shows that advertiser's ROI are improved by +2.4%, +2.4%, and +8.6% for impression based (CPM), click based (CPC), and conversion based (CPA) campaigns respectively.

Gaussian Process and Levy Walk under Stochastic Non-instantaneous Resetting and Stochastic Rest

A stochastic process with movement, return, and rest phases is considered in this paper. For the movement phase, the particles move following the dynamics of Gaussian process or ballistic type of Lévy walk, and the time of each movement is random. For the return phase, the particles will move back to the origin with a constant velocity or acceleration or under the action of a harmonic force after each movement, so that this phase can also be treated as a non-instantaneous resetting. After each return, a rest with a random time at the origin follows. The asymptotic behaviors of the mean squared displacements with different kinds of movement dynamics, random resting time, and returning are discussed. The stationary distributions are also considered when the process is localized. Besides, the mean first passage time is considered when the dynamic of movement phase is Brownian motion.

CP violation in non-leptonic $B_c$ decays to excited final states

We study the CP violation in two-body nonleptonic decays of $B_c$ meson. We concentrate on the decay channels which contain at least one excited heavy meson in the final states. Specifically, the following channels are considered: $B_c\to c\bar c(2S, 2P)+\bar cq(1S, 1P)$, $B_c\to c\bar c(1S)+\bar cq(2S, 2P)$, $B_c\to c\bar c(1P)+\bar cq(2S)$, $B_c\to c\bar c(1D)+\bar cq(1S, 1P)$, and $B_c\to c\bar c(3S)+\bar cq(1S)$. The improved Bethe-Salpeter method is applied to calculate the hadronic transition matrix element. Our results show that some decay modes have large branching ratios, which is of the order of $10^{-3}$. The CP violation effect in $B_c \rightarrow η_c(1S)+D(2S)$, $B_c \rightarrow η_c(1S)+D_0^{*}(2P)$, and $B_c \rightarrow J/ψ+D^{*}(2S)$ are most likely to be found. If the detection precision of the CP asymmetry in such channels can reach the $3σ$ level, at least $10^7$ $B_c$ events are needed.

DeepLight: Deep Lightweight Feature Interactions for Accelerating CTR Predictions in Ad Serving

Click-through rate (CTR) prediction is a crucial task in online display advertising. The embedding-based neural networks have been proposed to learn both explicit feature interactions through a shallow component and deep feature interactions using a deep neural network (DNN) component. These sophisticated models, however, slow down the prediction inference by at least hundreds of times. To address the issue of significantly increased serving delay and high memory usage for ad serving in production, this paper presents \emph{DeepLight}: a framework to accelerate the CTR predictions in three aspects: 1) accelerate the model inference via explicitly searching informative feature interactions in the shallow component; 2) prune redundant layers and parameters at intra-layer and inter-layer level in the DNN component; 3) promote the sparsity of the embedding layer to preserve the most discriminant signals. By combining the above efforts, the proposed approach accelerates the model inference by 46X on Criteo dataset and 27X on Avazu dataset without any loss on the prediction accuracy. This paves the way for successfully deploying complicated embedding-based neural networks in production for ad serving.

Lévy walk dynamics in mixed potentials from the perspective of random walk theory

Lévy walk process is one of the most effective models to describe superdiffusion, which underlies some important movement patterns and has been widely observed in the micro and macro dynamics. From the perspective of random walk theory, here we investigate the dynamics of Lévy walks under the influences of the constant force field and the one combined with harmonic potential. Utilizing Hermite polynomial approximation to deal with the spatiotemporally coupled analysis challenges, some striking features are detected, including non Gaussian stationary distribution, faster diffusion, and still strongly anomalous diffusion, etc.

The weak $B$, $B_s$ and $B_c$ decays to radially excited states

Recently, many new excited states of heavy mesons, especially the radially excited states, are discovered. The study of the production processes of these states from the ground b-flavored mesons is of interest. In this paper, we use the improved Bethe-Salpeter method to study the semi-leptonic and non-leptonic decays of $B$, $B_s$, and $B_c$ mesons, where the final states are focused on the radial excited $2S$ and $3S$ states. We find that many channels have branching ratios up to $10^{-4}$, which are within the detection accuracy of current experiments.

Bid Shading by Win-Rate Estimation and Surplus Maximization

This paper describes a new win-rate based bid shading algorithm (WR) that does not rely on the minimum-bid-to-win feedback from a Sell-Side Platform (SSP). The method uses a modified logistic regression to predict the profit from each possible shaded bid price. The function form allows fast maximization at run-time, a key requirement for Real-Time Bidding (RTB) systems. We report production results from this method along with several other algorithms. We found that bid shading, in general, can deliver significant value to advertisers, reducing price per impression to about 55% of the unshaded cost. Further, the particular approach described in this paper captures 7% more profit for advertisers, than do benchmark methods of just bidding the most probable winning price. We also report 4.3% higher surplus than an industry Sell-Side Platform shading service. Furthermore, we observed 3% - 7% lower eCPM, eCPC and eCPA when the algorithm was integrated with budget controllers. We attribute the gains above as being mainly due to the explicit maximization of the surplus function, and note that other algorithms can take advantage of this same approach.

Bid Shading in The Brave New World of First-Price Auctions

Online auctions play a central role in online advertising, and are one of the main reasons for the industry's scalability and growth. With great changes in how auctions are being organized, such as changing the second- to first-price auction type, advertisers and demand platforms are compelled to adapt to a new volatile environment. Bid shading is a known technique for preventing overpaying in auction systems that can help maintain the strategy equilibrium in first-price auctions, tackling one of its greatest drawbacks. In this study, we propose a machine learning approach of modeling optimal bid shading for non-censored online first-price ad auctions. We clearly motivate the approach and extensively evaluate it in both offline and online settings on a major demand side platform. The results demonstrate the superiority and robustness of the new approach as compared to the existing approaches across a range of performance metrics.

Relativistic calculations of $R(D^{(*)})$, $R(D^{(*)}_s)$, $R(η_c)$ and $R(J/ψ)$

Recently, the deviation of the ratios $R(D)$, $R(D^{*})$ and $R(J/ψ)$ have been found between experimental data and the Standard Model predictions, which may be the hint of New Physics. In this work, we calculate these ratios within the Standard Model by using the improved instantaneous Bethe-Salpeter method. The emphasis is pad to the relativistic correction of the form factors. The results are $R(D)=0.312 ^{+0.006}_{-0.007}$, $R(D^*)= 0.249^{+0.001}_{-0.002}$, $R(D_s)=0.320 ^{+0.009}_{-0.009}$, $R(D^*_s)=0.251 ^{+0.002}_{-0.003}$, $R(η_c)=0.384 ^{+0.032}_{-0.042}$, and $R(J/ψ)=0.267 ^{+0.009}_{-0.011}$, which are consistent with predictions of other models and the experimental data. The semileptonic decay rates and corresponding form factors at zero recoil are also given.

Lévy walk dynamics in an external harmonic potential

Lévy walks (LWs) are spatiotemporally coupled random-walk processes describing superdiffusive heat conduction in solids, propagation of light in disordered optical materials, motion of molecular motors in living cells, or motion of animals, humans, robots, and viruses. We here investigate a key feature of LWs, their response to an external harmonic potential. In this generic setting for confined motion we demonstrate that LWs equilibrate exponentially and may assume a bimodal stationary distribution. We also show that the stationary distribution has a horizontal slope next to a reflecting boundary placed at the origin, in contrast to correlated superdiffusive processes. Our results generalize LWs to confining forces and settle some long-standing puzzles around LWs.

Continuous time random walks and Lévy walks with stochastic resetting

Intermittent stochastic processes appear in a wide field, such as chemistry, biology, ecology, and computer science. This paper builds up the theory of intermittent continuous time random walk (CTRW) and Lévy walk, in which the particles are stochastically reset to a given position with a resetting rate $r$. The mean squared displacements of the CTRW and Lévy walks with stochastic resetting are calculated, uncovering that the stochastic resetting always makes the CTRW process localized and Lévy walk diffuse slower. The asymptotic behaviors of the probability density function of Lévy walk with stochastic resetting are carefully analyzed under different scales of $x$, and a striking influence of stochastic resetting is observed.

Identifying Solar Flare Precursors Using Time Series of SDO/HMI Images and SHARP Parameters

We present several methods towards construction of precursors, which show great promise towards early predictions, of solar flare events in this paper. A data pre-processing pipeline is built to extract useful data from multiple sources, Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) and Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO)/Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI), to prepare inputs for machine learning algorithms. Two classification models are presented: classification of flares from quiet times for active regions and classification of strong versus weak flare events. We adopt deep learning algorithms to capture both the spatial and temporal information from HMI magnetogram data. Effective feature extraction and feature selection with raw magnetogram data using deep learning and statistical algorithms enable us to train classification models to achieve almost as good performance as using active region parameters provided in HMI/Space-Weather HMI-Active Region Patch (SHARP) data files. Case studies show a significant increase in the prediction score around 20 hours before strong solar flare events.

Rates of $D^{*}_{0}(2400)$, $ D_J^*(3000) $ as the $D^{*}_{0}(2P)$ and $D^{*}_{0}(3P)$ in $B$ Decays

In this paper, we use the instantaneous Bethe-Salpeter method to calculate the semi-leptonic and non-leptonic production of the orbitally excited scalar $ D_0^* $ in $ B $ meson decays. When the final state is $ 1P $ state $ D_0^*(2400) $, our theoretical decay rate is consistent with experimental data. For $ D_J^*(3000) $ final state, which was observed by LHCb collaboration recently and here treated as the orbitally excited scalar $D^{*}_{0}(2P)$, its rate is in the order of $ 10^{-4} \sim 10^{-6}$. We find the special node structure of $D^{*}_{0}(2P)$ wave function possibly results in the suppression of its branching ratio and the abnormal uncertainty. The $3P$ states production rate is in the order of $ 10^{-5}$.

Semi-leptonic decays of $B^\ast$, $B_s^\ast$, and $B_c^\ast$ with the Bethe-Salpeter method

In this paper we study the semileptonic decays of $B^\ast$, $B_s^\ast$, and $B_c^\ast$ by using the Bethe-Salpeter method with instantaneous approximation. Both the $V\to Pl^-\barν_l$ and $V\to Vl^-\barν_l$ cases are considered. The largest partial width of these channels is of the order of $10^{-14}$ GeV. The branching ratios of these semileptonic decays are also estimated by using the partial width of the one photon decay channel to approximate the total width. For $B^{\ast-}\to D^{(\ast)0}e^-\barν_e$ and $B_s^{\ast0}\to D_s^{(\ast)+}e^-\barν_e$, the branching ratios are of the order of $10^{-8}$ and $10^{-7}$, respectively. For $B_c^{\ast-}$, the $J/ψe^-\barν_e$ and $B_s^{\ast0}e^-\barν_e$ channels have the largest branching ratio, which is of the order of $10^{-6}$.
