Calibration-free Rydberg Atomic Receiver for Sub-MHz Wireless Communications and Sensing

The exploitation of sub-MHz (\textless 1 MHz) can be beneficial for a plethora of applications like underwater vehicular communication, subsurface exploration, low-frequency navigation etc. The traditional electrical receivers in this band are either hundreds of meters long or, when miniaturized, inefficient and bandwidth-limited, making them inapplicable for practical underwater implementations. Such obstacles can be circumvented by the emerging Rydberg atomic receiving technology, which is capable of detecting fields from DC up to the terahertz regime with compact structure. Against this background, we propose a method to detect sub-MHz electric fields without further calibration. Specifically, a physics-based model of the combined DC and AC-Stark response is established. Based on the model, we modulate the DC-Stark spectrum with the received signal and extract its amplitude by fitting the cycle-averaged, symmetric Stark-split peaks. Then we map this swing directly to the intrinsic atomic polarizability. By such operations, the proposed method can remove the dependence on electrode spacing or field-amplitude references. For performance evaluation, six-level Lindblad simulations and experiments are conducted at a low-frequency field of 30 kHz demonstrate a minimum detectable field of 5.3 \text{mV}/\text{cm}, with stable readout across practical optical-power variations. The approach manages to expand operating range of Rydberg atomic receivers below 1 MHz, and enables compact, calibration-free quantum front ends for underwater and subsurface receivers.

Jamming Identification with Differential Transformer for Low-Altitude Wireless Networks

Wireless jamming identification, which detects and classifies electromagnetic jamming from non-cooperative devices, is crucial for emerging low-altitude wireless networks consisting of many drone terminals that are highly susceptible to electromagnetic jamming. However, jamming identification schemes adopting deep learning (DL) are vulnerable to attacks involving carefully crafted adversarial samples, resulting in inevitable robustness degradation. To address this issue, we propose a differential transformer framework for wireless jamming identification. Firstly, we introduce a differential transformer network in order to distinguish jamming signals, which overcomes the attention noise when compared with its traditional counterpart by performing self-attention operations in a differential manner. Secondly, we propose a randomized masking training strategy to improve network robustness, which leverages the patch partitioning mechanism inherent to transformer architectures in order to create parallel feature extraction branches. Each branch operates on a distinct, randomly masked subset of patches, which fundamentally constrains the propagation of adversarial perturbations across the network. Additionally, the ensemble effect generated by fusing predictions from these diverse branches demonstrates superior resilience against adversarial attacks. Finally, we introduce a novel consistent training framework that significantly enhances adversarial robustness through dualbranch regularization. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed methodology is superior to existing methods in boosting robustness to adversarial samples.

Secure Transmission for Cell-Free Symbiotic Radio Communications with Movable Antenna: Continuous and Discrete Positioning Designs

In this paper, we study a movable antenna (MA) empowered secure transmission scheme for reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) aided cell-free symbiotic radio (SR) system. Specifically, the MAs deployed at distributed access points (APs) work collaboratively with the RIS to establish high-quality propagation links for both primary and secondary transmissions, as well as suppressing the risk of eavesdropping on confidential primary information. We consider both continuous and discrete MA position cases and maximize the secrecy rate of primary transmission under the secondary transmission constraints, respectively. For the continuous position case, we propose a two-layer iterative optimization method based on differential evolution with one-in-one representation (DEO), to find a high-quality solution with relatively moderate computational complexity. For the discrete position case, we first extend the DEO based iterative framework by introducing the mapping and determination operations to handle the characteristic of discrete MA positions. To further reduce the computational complexity, we then design an alternating optimization (AO) iterative framework to solve all variables within a single layer. In particular, we develop an efficient strategy to derive the sub-optimal solution for the discrete MA positions, superseding the DEO-based method. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of the proposed MA empowered secure transmission scheme along with its optimization algorithms.

Multiple-Mode Affine Frequency Division Multiplexing with Index Modulation

Affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM), a promising multicarrier technique utilizing chirp signals, has been envisioned as an effective solution for high-mobility communication scenarios. In this paper, we develop a multiple-mode index modulation scheme tailored for AFDM, termed as MM-AFDM-IM, which aims to further improve the spectral and energy efficiencies of AFDM. Specifically, multiple constellation alphabets are selected for different chirp-based subcarriers (chirps). Aside from classical amplitude/phase modulation, additional information bits can be conveyed by the dynamic patterns of both constellation mode selection and chirp activation, without extra energy consumption. Furthermore, we discuss the mode selection strategy and derive an asymptotically tight upper bound on the bit error rate (BER) of the proposed scheme under maximum-likelihood detection. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the superior performance of MM-AFDM-IM compared to conventional benchmark schemes.

MMStencil: Optimizing High-order Stencils on Multicore CPU using Matrix Unit

Matrix-accelerated stencil computation is a hot research topic, yet its application to three-dimensional (3D) high-order stencils and HPC remains underexplored. With the emergence of matrix units on multicore CPUs, we analyze matrix-based acceleration strategies and tailor an optimal approach for 3D high-order stencils. We introduce algorithmic optimizations based on SIMD and matrix units to address strided memory accesses, alignment conflicts, and redundant accesses. We propose memory optimizations to boost on-package memory efficiency, and a novel multi-thread parallelism paradigm to overcome data-sharing challenges caused by the absence of shared data caches. MMStencil sustains consistently high hardware utilization across diverse stencil shapes and dimensions. Our DMA-based inter-NUMA communication further mitigates NUMA effects and MPI limitations in hybrid parallelism. Combining all the innovations, MMStencil outperforms state-of-the-art libraries on Nvidia A100 GPGPU by up to 2.1x. Moreover, the performance improvements translate directly to real-world HPC applications and enable RTM applications to yield 1.8x speedup versus a highly optimized industrial Nvidia A100 GPGPU version.

AFDM-Enabled Integrated Sensing and Communication: Theoretical Framework and Pilot Design

The integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has been envisioned as one representative usage scenario of sixth-generation (6G) network. However, the unprecedented characteristics of 6G, especially the doubly dispersive channel, make classical ISAC waveforms rather challenging to guarantee a desirable performance level. The recently proposed affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) can attain full diversity even under doubly dispersive effects, thus becoming a competitive candidate for next-generation ISAC waveforms. Relevant investigations are still at an early stage, which involve only straightforward design lacking explicit theoretical analysis. This paper provides an in-depth investigation on AFDM waveform design for ISAC applications. Specifically, the closed-form Crámer-Rao bounds of target detection for AFDM are derived, followed by a demonstration on its merits over existing counterparts. Furthermore, we formulate the ambiguity function of the pilot-assisted AFDM waveform for the first time, revealing conditions for stable sensing performance. To further enhance both the communication and sensing performance of the AFDM waveform, we propose a novel pilot design by exploiting the characteristics of AFDM signals. The proposed design is analytically validated to be capable of optimizing the ambiguity function property and channel estimation accuracy simultaneously as well as overcoming the sensing and channel estimation range limitation originated from the pilot spacing. Numerical results have verified the superiority of the proposed pilot design in terms of dual-functional performance.

Near-Field ISAC for THz Wireless Systems

Sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks are expected not only to provide high-speed connectivity but also to support reliable sensing capabilities, giving rise to the integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) paradigm. To enable higher data rates and more accurate sensing, terahertz (THz) systems empowered by extremely large multiple-input-multiple-output (XL-MIMO) technology are envisioned as key enablers for future ISAC systems. Owing to the substantial increase in both effective array aperture and carrier frequency, a considerable portion of future ISAC applications is anticipated to fall within the near-field coverage region, instead of the conventional far-field. However, most existing ISAC techniques are designed under the far-field planar wave assumption, struggling to accommodate the unique characteristics of THz near-field propagation. To motivate future research into near-field ISAC research, we systematically investigate the characteristics of THz near-field propagation and explore its potential to facilitate ISAC systems. Specifically, we analyze three fundamental characteristics of THz near-field propagation and review state-of-the-art techniques that exploit these features to boost both communication and sensing performance. To further harness the angular-range coupling effect, we zoom into a particularly interesting approach to near-field sensing based on wavenumber domain. Besides, to exploit the beam squint effect, an ISAC resource allocation framework is introduced to support integrated multi-angle sensing and multi-user communication. Finally, we outline promising directions for future research in this emerging area.

High-Resolution Quantum Sensing with Rydberg Atomic Receiver: Principles, Experiments and Future Prospects

Quantum sensing using Rydberg atoms offers unprecedented opportunities for next-generation radar systems, transcending classical limitations in miniaturization and spectral agility. Implementing this paradigm for radar sensing, this work proposes a quantum-enhanced radar reception architecture enabled by the emerging Rydberg atomic receiver, replacing conventional antenna-to-mixer chains with a centimeter-scale vapor cell. The proposed approach is based on electromagnetically induced transparency with the Autler-Townes splitting enabling direct RF-to-optical downconversion within the atomic medium via an external co-frequency reference. To circumvent the intrinsic bottleneck on instantaneous bandwidth of atomic receiver, we invoke a non-uniform stepped-frequency synthesis strategy combining coarse laser frequency tuning with fine AC-Stark shift compensation. Additionally, we establish a nonlinear response model of the Rydberg atomic homodyne receiver and propose a customized nonlinear compensation method that extends the linear dynamic range by over 7 dB. We develop a compressive sensing algorithm (CS-Rydberg) to suppress noise and mitigate the undersampling problem. Experimentally, we demonstrate a compact prototype achieving centimeter-level ranging precision (RMSE = 1.06 cm) within 1.6-1.9 m. By synthesizing GHz-bandwidth (2.6-3.6 GHz), resolvable target separations down to 15 cm are observed under controlled sparse scenarios. These results not only validate the feasibility of quantum sensing based on Rydberg atomic receivers but also underscore the architecture's inherent scalability: by harnessing the atoms' ultra-broad spectral response, the synthesized bandwidth can be extended well beyond the current range, enabling sub-centimeter resolution in future radar systems while preserving quantum-traceable calibration and a highly simplified front end.

Pre-Chirp-Domain Index Modulation for Full-Diversity Affine Frequency Division Multiplexing towards 6G

Affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM), tailored as a superior multicarrier technique utilizing chirp signals for high-mobility communications, is envisioned as a promising candidate for the sixth-generation (6G) wireless network. AFDM is based on the discrete affine Fourier transform (DAFT) with two adjustable parameters of the chirp signals, termed as the pre-chirp and post-chirp parameters, respectively. We show that the pre-chirp counterpart can be flexibly manipulated for additional degree-of-freedom (DoF). Therefore, this paper proposes a novel AFDM scheme with the pre-chirp index modulation (PIM) philosophy (AFDM-PIM), which can implicitly convey extra information bits through dynamic pre-chirp parameter assignment, thus enhancing both spectral and energy efficiency. Specifically, we first demonstrate that the subcarrier orthogonality is still maintained by applying distinct pre-chirp parameters to various subcarriers in the AFDM modulation process. Inspired by this property, each AFDM subcarrier is constituted with a unique pre-chirp signal according to the incoming bits. By such arrangement, extra binary bits can be embedded into the index patterns of pre-chirp parameter assignment without additional energy consumption. For performance analysis, we derive the asymptotically tight upper bounds on the average bit error rates (BERs) of the proposed schemes with maximum-likelihood (ML) detection, and validate that the proposed AFDM-PIM can achieve the optimal diversity order under doubly dispersive channels. Based on the derivations, we further propose an optimal pre-chirp alphabet design to enhance the BER performance via intelligent optimization algorithms. Simulations demonstrate that the proposed AFDM-PIM outperforms the classical benchmarks under doubly dispersive channel.

Transmit Beamforming Design for ISAC with Stacked Intelligent Metasurfaces

This paper proposes a transmit beamforming strategy for the integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems enabled by the novel stacked intelligent metasurface (SIM) architecture, where the base station (BS) simultaneously performs downlink communication and radar target detection via different beams. To ensure superior dual-function performance simultaneously, we design the multi-layer cascading beamformer by maximizing the sum rate of the users while optimally shaping the normalized beam pattern for detection. A dual-normalized differential gradient descent (D3) algorithm is further proposed to solve the resulting non-convex multi-objective problem (MOP), where gradient differences and dual normalization are employed to ensure a fair trade-off between communication and sensing objectives. Numerical results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed beamforming design in terms of balancing communication and sensing performance.

MIMO Precoding Exploiting Extra Degrees of Freedom (DoF) in the Wavenumber Domain

In this paper, we propose an emerging wavenumber-domain precoding scheme to break the limitations of rank-1 channels that merely supports single-stream transmission, enabling simultaneous transmission of multiple data streams. The proposed wavenumber-domain precoding scheme also breaks the Rayleigh distance demarcation, regardless of the far-field and near-field contexts. Specifically, by characterizing the channel response as the superposition of a series of Fourier harmonics specified by different wavenumbers, the degree of freedom (DoF) is dependent on the cardinality of the wavenumber support, based on which the extra DoF is presented. This representation is applicable for both far-field and near-field. Different wavenumber atoms, determined within this support, constitute the codebook for MIMO precoding, in which each atom allows for the transmission of a data stream. Then, to maximize the capacity, it is required to select the wavenumbers associated with the optimal transmission direction, and optimize its power allocation. Finally, our simulation results demonstrate the significant superiority in comparison to the conventional spatial division schemes, with the potential of approaching the theoretical performance upper bound achieved by singular value decomposition (SVD).

Reinforcement-Learning-Enabled Beam Alignment for Water-Air Direct Optical Wireless Communications

The escalating interests on underwater exploration/reconnaissance applications have motivated high-rate data transmission from underwater to airborne relaying platforms, especially under high-sea scenarios. Thanks to its broad bandwidth and superior confidentiality, Optical wireless communication has become one promising candidate for water-air transmission. However, the optical signals inevitably suffer from deviations when crossing the highly-dynamic water-air interfaces in the absence of relaying ships/buoys. To address the issue, this article proposes one novel beam alignment strategy based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL) for water-air direct optical wireless communications. Specifically, the dynamic water-air interface is mathematically modeled using sea-wave spectrum analysis, followed by characterization of the propagation channel with ray-tracing techniques. Then the deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) scheme is introduced for DRL-based transceiving beam alignment. A logarithm-exponential (LE) nonlinear reward function with respect to the received signal strength is designed for high-resolution rewarding between different actions. Simulation results validate the superiority of the proposed DRL-based beam alignment scheme.

Multi-Beam Integrated Sensing and Communication: State-of-the-Art, Challenges and Opportunities

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has been envisioned as a critical enabling technology for the next-generation wireless communication, which can realize location/motion detection of surroundings with communication devices. This additional sensing capability leads to a substantial network quality gain and expansion of the service scenarios. DAFT-Spread Affine Frequency Division Multiple Access for Downlink Transmission

Affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) and orthogonal AFDM access (O-AFDMA) are promising techniques based on chirp signals, which are able to suppress the performance deterioration caused by Doppler shifts in high-mobility scenarios. However, the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) in AFDM or O-AFDMA is still a crucial problem, which severely limits their practical applications. In this paper, we propose a discrete affine Fourier transform (DAFT)-spread AFDMA scheme based on the properties of the AFDM systems, named DAFT-s-AFDMA to significantly reduce the PAPR by resorting to the DAFT. We formulate the transmitted time-domain signals of the proposed DAFT-s-AFDMA schemes with localized and interleaved chirp subcarrier allocation strategies. Accordingly, we derive the guidelines for setting the DAFT parameters, revealing the insights of PAPR reduction. Finally, simulation results of PAPR comparison in terms of the complementary cumulative distribution function (CCDF) show that the proposed DAFT-s-AFDMA schemes with localized and interleaved strategies can both attain better PAPR performances than the conventional O-AFDMA scheme.

Channel Estimation for AFDM With Superimposed Pilots

The recent proposed affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) employing a multi-chirp waveform has shown its reliability and robustness in doubly selective fading channels. In the existing embedded pilot-aided channel estimation methods, the presence of guard symbols in the discrete affine Fourier transform (DAFT) domain causes inevitable degradation of the spectral efficiency (SE). To improve the SE, we propose a novel AFDM channel estimation scheme by introducing the superimposed pilots in the DAFT domain. An effective pilot placement method that minimizes the channel estimation error is also developed with a rigorous proof. To mitigate the pilot-data interference, we further propose an iterative channel estimator and signal detector. Simulation results demonstrate that both channel estimation and data detection performances can be improved by the proposed scheme as the number of superimposed pilots increases.

Cross-Domain Dual-Functional OFDM Waveform Design for Accurate Sensing/Positioning

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been widely recognized as the representative waveform for 5G wireless networks, which can directly support sensing/positioning with existing infrastructure. To guarantee superior sensing/positioning accuracy while supporting high-speed communications simultaneously, the dual functions tend to be assigned with different resource elements (REs) due to their diverse design requirements. This motivates optimization of resource allocation/waveform design across time, frequency, power and delay-Doppler domains. Therefore, this article proposes two cross-domain waveform optimization strategies for effective convergence of OFDM-based communications and sensing/positioning, following communication- and sensing-centric criteria, respectively. For the communication-centric design, to maximize the achievable data rate, a fraction of REs are optimally allocated for communications according to prior knowledge of the communication channel. The remaining REs are then employed for sensing/positioning, where the sidelobe level and peak-to-average power ratio are suppressed by optimizing its power-frequency and phase-frequency characteristics for sensing performance improvement. For the sensing-centric design, a `locally' perfect auto-correlation property is ensured for accurate sensing and positioning by adjusting the unit cells of the ambiguity function within its region of interest (RoI). Afterwards, the irrelevant cells beyond RoI, which can readily determine the sensing power allocation, are optimized with the communication power allocation to enhance the achievable data rate. Numerical results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed waveform designs.

Furthermore, we explore the potential applications of NS-COM, such as structural expansion in SAGSIN communication, civil aviation communication, remote and urgent communication, weather monitoring and carbon neutrality. Finally, some promising research avenues are identified, including stratospheric satellite (StratoSat) -to-ground direct links for mobile terminals, reconfigurable multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and holographic MIMO, federated learning in NS-COM networks, maritime communication, electromagnetic spectrum sensing and adversarial game, integrated sensing and communications, StratoSat-based radar detection and imaging, NS-COM assisted enhanced global navigation system, NS-COM assisted intelligent unmanned system and free space optical (FSO) communication. Overall, this paper highlights that the NS-COM plays an indispensable role in the SAGSIN puzzle, providing substantial performance and coverage enhancement to the traditional SAGSIN architecture.
