Understanding and Supporting Online Discussion with Opinionated Chatbots

Opinionated chatbots are increasingly present on online platforms and have the potential to shape public discourse by influencing individuals' viewpoints before they engage in discussions. Despite their growing presence, the impact of interacting with opinionated chatbots on subsequent online interactions remains largely unexplored. This study investigated how exposure to different types of opinionated chatbots, specifically those expressing opposing, reinforcing, or balanced viewpoints, affected participants' subsequent online discussions. In a controlled experiment with 83 participants, we found that interacting with an opinionated chatbot that consistently opposed participants' arguments led to greater shifts in opinion, indicating enhanced openness to revising one's initial stance. Conversely, participants who interacted with a chatbot that consistently reinforced their views were more likely to adopt more agreeable communication styles in subsequent conversations with others. Furthermore, interactions with different types of opinionated chatbots resulted in varying levels of trust, as well as different perceptions of chatbots and human interlocutors. Our findings indicate that opinionated chatbots can influence both individuals' opinions on social topics and their communication behaviors in online environments. This presents a trade-off for future designers seeking to facilitate cognitive flexibility in changing opinions while maintaining positive user experiences and trust in the chatbots during public discourse. Designing with Tensions: Older Adults' Emotional Support-Seeking Under System-Level Constraints in Conversational AI

Older adults have increasingly turned to conversational AI as a source of emotional support. However, little is known about how emotionally supportive interactions are experienced in everyday use, particularly when AI systems limit, redirect, or intervene during these interactions. We interviewed 18 older adults about their experiences using conversational AI for emotional support, examining when they turn to AI, how they engage during emotionally vulnerable moments, and how they respond when support feels disrupted. Our findings show that older adults often rely on AI when other forms of social support feel inaccessible. However, current safety-related interventions can redirect interactions in ways that participants experience as interruptions to emotional engagement or as shifts in control away from them. Such disruptions can undermine older adults' ability to remain emotionally engaged and, in some cases, contribute to emotional distress. We discussed design implications for emotionally supportive conversational AI, emphasizing the need for safety interventions that are enacted within older adults' social contexts, align with users' emotional pacing, and preserve their sense of agency.

When Humans Don't Feel Like an Option: Contextual Factors That Shape When Older Adults Turn to Conversational AI for Emotional Support

Older adults are increasingly turning to conversational AI for emotional expression. While prior research has examined general attitudes toward AI companionship, little is known about the specific moments when and why older adults choose AI over close others for emotional support. This study addresses this gap by examining the moment-level conditions that shape these decisions in everyday life. Drawing on interviews with 18 older adults, we identify three contextual factors: temporal unavailability of human contacts, relational considerations around burden and evaluation, and self-presentation concerns tied to dignity and face-saving. Our findings reveal how age-related needs for independence, dignity, and valued self-presentation shape these everyday decisions. This work shifts attention from general patterns of AI use to the moment-level circumstances in which emotionally supportive engagement emerges. By foregrounding these situated dynamics, we provide an empirical foundation for context-sensitive responsible AI design and future research on emotional support-seeking in later life.

Understanding Older Adults' Experiences of Support, Concerns, and Risks from Kinship-Role AI-Generated Influencers

AI-generated influencers are rapidly gaining popularity on Chinese short-video platforms, often adopting kinship-based roles such as AI grandchildren to attract older adults. Although this trend has raised public concern, little is known about the design strategies behind these influencers, how older adults experience them, and the benefits and risks involved. In this study, we combined social media analysis with interviews to unpack the above questions. Our findings show that influencers use both visual and conversational cues to enact kinship roles, prompting audiences to engage in kinship-based role-play. Interviews further show that these cues arouse emotional resonance, help fulfill older adults' informational and emotional needs, while also raising concerns about emotional displacement and unequal emotional investment. We highlight the complex relationship between virtual avatars and real family ties, shaped by broader sociocultural norms, and discuss how AI might strengthen social support for older adults while mitigating risks within cultural contexts.

Multi-Agent Systems Shape Social Norms for Prosocial Behavior Change

Social norm interventions are used promote prosocial behaviors by highlighting prevalent actions, but their effectiveness is often limited in heterogeneous populations where shared understandings of desirable behaviors are lacking. This study explores whether multi-agent systems can establish "virtual social norms" to encourage donation behavior. We conducted an online experiment where participants interacted with a group of agents to discuss donation behaviors. Changes in perceived social norms, conformity, donation behavior, and user experience were measured pre- and postdiscussion. Results show that multi-agent interactions effectively increased perceived social norms and donation willingness. Notably, in-group agents led to stronger perceived social norms, higher conformity, and greater donation increases compared to out-group agents. Our findings demonstrate the potential of multi-agent systems for creating social norm interventions and offer insights into leveraging social identity dynamics to promote prosocial behavior in virtual environments.

Conversational AI for Social Good (CAI4SG): An Overview of Emerging Trends, Applications, and Challenges

The integration of Conversational Agents (CAs) into daily life offers opportunities to tackle global challenges, leading to the emergence of Conversational AI for Social Good (CAI4SG). This paper examines the advancements of CAI4SG using a role-based framework that categorizes systems according to their AI autonomy and emotional engagement. This framework emphasizes the importance of considering the role of CAs in social good contexts, such as serving as empathetic supporters in mental health or functioning as assistants for accessibility. Additionally, exploring the deployment of CAs in various roles raises unique challenges, including algorithmic bias, data privacy, and potential socio-technical harms. These issues can differ based on the CA's role and level of engagement. This paper provides an overview of the current landscape, offering a role-based understanding that can guide future research and design aimed at the equitable, ethical, and effective development of CAI4SG.

AI-exhibited Personality Traits Can Shape Human Self-concept through Conversations

Recent Large Language Model (LLM) based AI can exhibit recognizable and measurable personality traits during conversations to improve user experience. However, as human understandings of their personality traits can be affected by their interaction partners' traits, a potential risk is that AI traits may shape and bias users' self-concept of their own traits. To explore the possibility, we conducted a randomized behavioral experiment. Our results indicate that after conversations about personal topics with an LLM-based AI chatbot using GPT-4o default personality traits, users' self-concepts aligned with the AI's measured personality traits. The longer the conversation, the greater the alignment. This alignment led to increased homogeneity in self-concepts among users. We also observed that the degree of self-concept alignment was positively associated with users' conversation enjoyment. Our findings uncover how AI personality traits can shape users' self-concepts through human-AI conversation, highlighting both risks and opportunities. We provide important design implications for developing more responsible and ethical AI systems.

AI Literacy Education for Older Adults: Motivations, Challenges and Preferences

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly integrated into older adults' daily lives, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to understand and use AI is crucial. However, most research on AI literacy education has focused on students and children, leaving a gap in understanding the unique needs of older adults when learning about AI. To address this, we surveyed 103 older adults aged 50 and above (Mean = 64, SD = 7). Results revealed that they found it important and were motivated to learn about AI because they wish to harness the benefits and avoid the dangers of AI, seeing it as necessary to cope in the future. However, they expressed learning challenges such as difficulties in understanding and not knowing how to start learning AI. Particularly, a strong preference for hands-on learning was indicated. We discussed design opportunities to support AI literacy education for older adults.

From Interaction to Attitude: Exploring the Impact of Human-AI Cooperation on Mental Illness Stigma

AI conversational agents have demonstrated efficacy in social contact interventions for stigma reduction at a low cost. However, the underlying mechanisms of how interaction designs contribute to these effects remain unclear. This study investigates how participating in three human-chatbot interactions affects attitudes toward mental illness. We developed three chatbots capable of engaging in either one-way information dissemination from chatbot to a human or two-way cooperation where the chatbot and a human exchange thoughts and work together on a cooperation task. We then conducted a two-week mixed-methods study to investigate variations over time and across different group memberships. The results indicate that human-AI cooperation can effectively reduce stigma toward individuals with mental illness by fostering relationships between humans and AI through social contact. Additionally, compared to a one-way chatbot, interacting with a cooperative chatbot led participants to perceive it as more competent and likable, promoting greater empathy during the conversation. However, despite the success in reducing stigma, inconsistencies between the chatbot's role and the mental health context raised concerns. We discuss the implications of our findings for human-chatbot interaction designs aimed at changing human attitudes.

Multi-Agents are Social Groups: Investigating Social Influence of Multiple Agents in Human-Agent Interactions

Multi-agent systems - systems with multiple independent AI agents working together to achieve a common goal - are becoming increasingly prevalent in daily life. Drawing inspiration from the phenomenon of human group social influence, we investigate whether a group of AI agents can create social pressure on users to agree with them, potentially changing their stance on a topic. We conducted a study in which participants discussed social issues with either a single or multiple AI agents, and where the agents either agreed or disagreed with the user's stance on the topic. We found that conversing with multiple agents (holding conversation content constant) increased the social pressure felt by participants, and caused a greater shift in opinion towards the agents' stances on each topic. Our study shows the potential advantages of multi-agent systems over single-agent platforms in causing opinion change. We discuss design implications for possible multi-agent systems that promote social good, as well as the potential for malicious actors to use these systems to manipulate public opinion.

Mitigating Ageism through Virtual Reality: Intergenerational Collaborative Escape Room Design

As virtual reality (VR) becomes more popular for intergenerational collaboration, there is still a significant gap in research regarding understanding the potential for reducing ageism. Our study aims to address this gap by analyzing ageism levels before and after VR escape room collaborative experiences. We recruited 28 participants to collaborate with an older player in a challenging VR escape room game. To ensure consistent and reliable performance data of older players, our experimenters simulated older participants following specific guidelines. After completing the game, we found a significant reduction in ageism among younger participants. Furthermore, we introduce a new game mechanism that encourages intergenerational collaboration. Our research highlights the potential of VR collaborative games as a practical tool for mitigating ageism. It provides valuable insights for designing immersive VR experiences that foster enhanced intergenerational collaboration.

Understanding the Effects of Miscalibrated AI Confidence on User Trust, Reliance, and Decision Efficacy

Providing well-calibrated AI confidence can help promote users' appropriate trust in and reliance on AI, which are essential for AI-assisted decision-making. However, calibrating AI confidence -- providing confidence score that accurately reflects the true likelihood of AI being correct -- is known to be challenging. To understand the effects of AI confidence miscalibration, we conducted our first experiment. The results indicate that miscalibrated AI confidence impairs users' appropriate reliance and reduces AI-assisted decision-making efficacy, and AI miscalibration is difficult for users to detect. Then, in our second experiment, we examined whether communicating AI confidence calibration levels could mitigate the above issues. We find that it helps users to detect AI miscalibration. Nevertheless, since such communication decreases users' trust in uncalibrated AI, leading to high under-reliance, it does not improve the decision efficacy. We discuss design implications based on these findings and future directions to address risks and ethical concerns associated with AI miscalibration.

WikiLink: an encyclopedia-based semantic network for design innovation

Data-driven design and innovation is a process to reuse and provide valuable and useful information. However, existing semantic networks for design innovation is built on data source restricted to technological and scientific information. Besides, existing studies build the edges of a semantic network only on either statistical or semantic relationships, which is less likely to make full use of the benefits from both types of relationships and discover implicit knowledge for design innovation. Therefore, we constructed WikiLink, a semantic network based on Wikipedia. Combined weight which fuses both the statistic and semantic weights between concepts is introduced in WikiLink, and four algorithms are developed for inspiring new ideas. Evaluation experiments are undertaken and results show that the network is characterised by high coverage of terms, relationships and disciplines, which proves the network's effectiveness and usefulness. Then a demonstration and case study results indicate that WikiLink can serve as an idea generation tool for innovation in conceptual design. The source code of WikiLink and the backend data are provided open-source for more users to explore and build on.
