The Design of Programmable Transmitarray with Independent Controls of Transmission Amplitude and Phase

A design method of programmable transmitarray with independent controls of transmission amplitude and phase is proposed in C-band. The unit cell with cascaded structures mainly consists of four parts, including the receiving antenna, reconfigurable attenuator with PIN diodes, reconfigurable phase shifter with varactors and transmitting antenna. Correspondingly, various manipulations of spatial electromagnetic (EM) fields are achieved by varying the bias voltages of PIN diodes and varactors in the transmitarray. The fabricated unit cell is measured in a standard waveguide, and the whole array with 8*8 unit cells is measured with two horns for calibration of the programmable EM features. The experimental results show that the transmission magnitude can range from -16 dB to -3.6 dB and the transmission phase achieves 270-degree coverage independently under the 16-bit programmable control. To further exhibit the capability and functionality of the proposed transmitarray, the waveform engineering of adaptive beamforming and power-allocation beamforming are separately realized in the experiment. The measured results have good agreements with our theoretical calculations, verifying the validity of our design method.

On Channel Reciprocity in Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Assisted Wireless Network

Channel reciprocity greatly facilitates downlink precoding in time-division duplexing (TDD) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications without the need for channel state information (CSI) feedback. Recently, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) emerge as a promising technology to enhance the performance of future wireless networks. However, since the artificial electromagnetic characteristics of RISs do not strictly follow the normal laws of nature, it brings up a question: does the channel reciprocity hold in RIS-assisted TDD wireless networks? After briefly reviewing the reciprocity theorem, in this article, we show that there still exists channel reciprocity for RIS-assisted wireless networks satisfying certain conditions. We also experimentally demonstrate the reciprocity at the sub-6 GHz and the millimeter-wave frequency bands by using two fabricated RISs. Furthermore, we introduce several RIS-assisted approaches to realizing nonreciprocal channels. Finally, potential opportunities brought by reciprocal/nonreciprocal RISs and future research directions are outlined.

Design and Implementation of MIMO Transmission Based on Dual-Polarized Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) signaling is one of the key technologies of current mobile communication systems. However, the complex and expensive radio frequency (RF) chains have always limited the increase of MIMO scale. In this paper, we propose a MIMO transmission architecture based on a dual-polarized reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), which can directly achieve modulation and transmission of multichannel signals without the need for conventional RF chains. Compared with previous works, the proposed architecture can improve the integration of RIS-based transmission systems. A prototype of the dual-polarized RIS-based MIMO transmission system is built and the experimental results confirm the feasibility of the proposed architecture. The dual-polarized RIS-based MIMO transmission architecture provides a promising solution for realizing low-cost ultra-massive MIMO towards future networks.

Reprogrammable plasmonic topological insulators with ultrafast control

Topological photonics has revolutionized our understanding of light propagation, but most of current studies are focused on designing a static photonic structure. Developing a dynamic photonic topological platform to switch multiple topological functionalities at ultrafast speed is still a great challenge. Here we demonstrate an ultrafast reprogrammable plasmonic topological insulator, where the topological propagation route can be dynamically steered at nanosecond-level switching time, namely more than 10^7 times faster than the current state-of-the-art. This orders-of-magnitude improvement is achieved by using ultrafast electronic switches in an innovative way to implement the programmability. Due to the flexible programmability, many existing photonic topological functionalities can be integrated into this agile topological platform. Our work brings the current studies of photonic topological insulators to a digital and intelligent era, which could boost the development of intelligent and ultrafast photoelectric devices with built-in topological protection.

Wireless Communications with Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface: Path Loss Modeling and Experimental Measurement

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) comprised of tunable unit cells have recently drawn significant attention due to their superior capability in manipulating electromagnetic waves. In particular, RIS-assisted wireless communications have the great potential to achieve significant performance improvement and coverage enhancement in a cost-effective and energy-efficient manner, by properly programming the reflection coefficients of the unit cells of RISs. In this paper, free-space path loss models for RIS-assisted wireless communications are developed for different scenarios by studying the physics and electromagnetic nature of RISs. The proposed models, which are first validated through extensive simulation results, reveal the relationships between the free-space path loss of RIS-assisted wireless communications and the distances from the transmitter/receiver to the RIS, the size of the RIS, the near-field/far-field effects of the RIS, and the radiation patterns of antennas and unit cells. In addition, three fabricated RISs (metasurfaces) are utilized to further corroborate the theoretical findings through experimental measurements conducted in a microwave anechoic chamber. The measurement results match well with the modeling results, thus validating the proposed free-space path loss models for RIS, which may pave the way for further theoretical studies and practical applications in this field.

MIMO Transmission through Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface: System Design, Analysis, and Implementation

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a new paradigm that has great potential to achieve cost-effective, energy-efficient information modulation for wireless transmission, by the ability to change the reflection coefficients of the unit cells of a programmable metasurface. Nevertheless, the electromagnetic responses of the RISs are usually only phase-adjustable, which considerably limits the achievable rate of RIS-based transmitters. In this paper, we propose an RIS architecture to achieve amplitude-and-phase-varying modulation, which facilitates the design of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) transmission. The hardware constraints of the RIS and their impacts on the system design are discussed and analyzed. Furthermore, the proposed approach is evaluated using our prototype which implements the RIS-based MIMO-QAM transmission over the air in real time.

Arbitrary manipulations of dual harmonics and their wave behaviors based on space-time-coding digital metasurface

Space-time modulated metasurfaces have attracted significant attention due to the additional degree of freedom in manipulating the electromagnetic (EM) waves in both space and time domains. However, the existing techniques have limited wave control capabilities, leading to just a few feasible schemes like regulation of only one specific harmonic. Here, we propose to realize independent manipulations of arbitrarily dual harmonics and their wave behaviors using a space-time-coding (STC) digital metasurface. By employing different STC sequences to the reflection phase of the metasurface, independent phase-pattern configurations of two desired harmonics can be achieved simultaneously, which further leads to independent beam shaping at the two harmonic frequencies. An analytical theory is developed to offer the physical insights in the arbitrary dual-harmonic manipulations of spectra and spatial beams, which is verified by experiments with good agreements. The presented STC strategy provides a new way to design multifunctional programmable systems, which will find potential applications such as cognitive radar and multi-user wireless communications.

Revolutionizing Future Healthcare using Wireless on the Walls (WoW)

Following the standardization and deployment of fifth generation (5G) network, researchers have shifted their focus to beyond 5G communication. Existing technologies have brought forth a plethora of applications that could not have been imagined in the past years. Beyond 5G will enable us to rethink the capability, it will offer in various sectors including agriculture, search and rescue and more specifically in the delivery of health care services. Unobtrusive and non-invasive measurements using radio frequency (RF) sensing, monitoring and control of wearable medical devices are the areas that would potentially benefit from beyond 5G. Applications such as RF sensing, device charging and remote patient monitoring will be a key challenge using millimetre (mmWave) communication. The mmWaves experience multi-path induced fading, where the rate of attenuation is larger as compared to the microwaves. Eventually, mmWave communication systems would require range extenders and guided surfaces. A proposed solution is the use of intelligent reflective surfaces, which will have the ability to manipulate electromagnetic (EM) signals. These intelligent surfaces mounted and/or coated on walls aka - Intelligent Walls are planar and active surfaces, which will be a key element in beyond 5G and 6G communication. These intelligent walls equipped with machine learning algorithm and computation power would have the ability to manipulate EM waves and act as gateways in the heterogeneous network environment. The article presents the application and vision of intelligent walls for next-generation healthcare in the era of beyond 5G.

Angle-Dependent Phase Shifter Model for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces: Does the Angle-Reciprocity Hold?

The existing phase shifter models adopted for reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have ignored the electromagnetic (EM) waves propagation behavior, thus cannot reveal practical effects of RIS on wireless communication systems. Based on the equivalent circuit, this paper introduces an angle-dependent phase shifter model for varactor-based RISs. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first phase shifter model which reveals that the incident angle of EM waves has influence on the reflection coefficient of RIS. In addition, the angle-reciprocity on RIS is investigated and further proved to be tenable when the reflection phase difference of adjacent RIS unit cells is invariant for an impinging EM wave and its reverse incident one. The angle-dependent characteristic of RIS is verified through full-wave simulation. According to our analysis and the simulation results, we find that the angle-reciprocity of varactor-based RIS only holds under small incident angles of both forward and reverse incident EM waves, thus limits the channel reciprocity in RIS-assisted TDD systems.

Metasurface-Assisted Passive Wireless Communication with Commodity Wi-Fi Signals

Wireless communication has become a standard solution to address ever-increasing demands for information transfer in our modern society. Conventional systems work in an active way in the sense that an active carrier signal is mandatorily required to transfer information from Alice to Bob. Especially in the era of 5G6G and with the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT), an exponential growth of users and connectivity confronts conventional systems with important challenges including limited spectrum resources, information security, energy consumption and cost efficiency. Here, we introduce the fundamentally different concept of passive wireless communication (PWC) which has the potential to resolve the above-mentioned issues. PWC transfers digital information by modulating demodulating already existing omnipresent ambient stray electromagnetic waves using a programmable metasurface. We provide a theoretical framework for encoding decoding and modulating demodulating in PWC and build a proof-of-principle prototype system leveraging existing commodity 2.4GHz Wi-Fi signals. We demonstrate information transfer from Alice to Bob with data rates on the order of hundreds of Kbps using distinguishable information-carrying control coding patterns of metasurface, neither necessitating an active carrier signal and its associated radio-frequency chain nor affecting the background active wireless communication. The presented strategy is particularly appealing for green IoT connectivity. At the same time, the concept is applicable to all types of wave phenomena and provides a fundamentally new perspective on the design of future wireless communication architectures.

How Do Space-Time Digital Metasurfaces Serve to Perform Analog Signal Processing?

In the quest to realize analog signal processing using sub-wavelength metasurfaces, in this paper, we demonstrate the first experimental demonstration of programmable time-modulated metasurface processors based on the key properties of spatial Fourier transformation. Exploiting space-time coding strategy enables local, independent, and real-time engineering of not only amplitude but also phase profile of the contributing reflective digital meta-atoms at both central and harmonic frequencies. Several illustrative examples are demonstrated to show that the proposed multifunctional calculus metasurface is capable of implementing a large class of useful mathematical operators, including 1st- and 2nd-order spatial differentiation, 1st-order spatial integration, and integro-differential equation solving accompanied by frequency conversions. Unlike the recent proposals, the designed time-modulated signal processor effectively operates for input signals containing wide spatial frequency bandwidths with an acceptable gain level. Proof-of-principle simulations are also reported along with the successful realization of image processing functions like edge detection. This time-varying wave-based computing system can set the direction for future developments of programmable metasurfaces with highly promising applications in ultrafast equation solving, real-time and continuous signal processing, and imaging.

Intelligent Electromagnetic Sensing with Learnable Data Acquisition and Processing

Electromagnetic (EM) sensing is a wide-spread contactless examination technique in science, engineering and military. However, conventional sensing systems are mostly lack of intelligence, which not only require expensive hardware and complicated computational algorithms, but also pose important challenges for advanced in-situ sensing. To address this shortcoming, we propose the concept of intelligent sensing by designing a programmable metasurface for data-driven learnable data acquisition, and integrating it into a data-driven learnable data processing pipeline. This strategy allows to learn an optimal sensing chain in systematic sense of variational autoencoder, i.e., to jointly learn an optimal measurement strategy along with matching data post processing schemes. A three-port deep artificial neural network (ANN) is designed to characterize the measurement process, such that an optimal measurement strategy is adaptive to the subject of interest by controlling the programmable metasurface for manipulating the EM illuminations. We design and fabricate a proof-of-principle sensing system in microwave, and demonstrate experimentally its significance on the high-quality imaging and high-accuracy object recognition from a remarkably reduced number of measurements. We faithfully expect that the presented methodology will provide us with a fundamentally new perspective on the design of intelligent sensing architectures at various frequencies, and beyond.

Intelligent Metasurface Imager and Recognizer

It is ever-increasingly demanded to remotely monitor people in daily life using radio-frequency probing signals. However, conventional systems can hardly be deployed in real-world settings since they typically require objects to either deliberately cooperate or carry a wireless active device or identification tag. To accomplish the complicated successive tasks using a single device in real time, we propose a smart metasurface imager and recognizer simultaneously, empowered by a network of artificial neural networks (ANNs) for adaptively controlling data flow. Here, three ANNs are employed in an integrated hierarchy: transforming measured microwave data into images of whole human body; classifying the specifically designated spots (hand and chest) within the whole image; and recognizing human hand signs instantly at Wi-Fi frequency of 2.4 GHz. Instantaneous in-situ imaging of full scene and adaptive recognition of hand signs and vital signs of multiple non-cooperative people have been experimentally demonstrated. We also show that the proposed intelligent metasurface system work well even when it is passively excited by stray Wi-Fi signals that ubiquitously exist in our daily lives. The reported strategy could open a new avenue for future smart cities, smart homes, human-device interactive interfaces, healthy monitoring, and safety screening free of visual privacy issues.

Wireless Communications with Programmable Metasurface: New Paradigms, Opportunities, and Challenges on Transceiver Design

Many emerging technologies, such as ultra-massive multiple-input multiple-output (UM-MIMO), terahertz (THz) communications are under active discussion as promising technologies to support the extremely high access rate and superior network capacity in the future sixth-generation (6G) mobile communication systems. However, such technologies are still facing many challenges for practical implementation. In particular, UM-MIMO and THz communication require extremely large number of radio frequency (RF) chains, and hence suffering from prohibitive hardware cost and complexity. In this article, we introduce a new paradigm to address the above issues, namely wireless communication enabled by programmable metasurfaces, by exploiting the powerful capability of metasurfaces in manipulating electromagnetic waves. We will first introduce the basic concept of programmable metasurfaces, followed by the promising paradigm shift in future wireless communication systems enabled by programmable metasurfaces. In particular, we propose two prospective paradigms of applying programmable metasurfaces in wireless transceivers: namely RF chain-free transmitter and space-down-conversion receiver, which both have great potential to simplify the architecture and reduce the hardware cost of future wireless transceivers. Furthermore, we present the design architectures, preliminary experimental results and main advantages of these new paradigms and discuss their potential opportunities and challenges toward ultra-massive 6G communications with low hardware complexity, low cost, and high energy efficiency.

Fully-control of OAM vortex beam and realization of retro and negative reflection at oblique incidence using dual-band 2-bit coding metasurface

This paper addresses a reflection-type dual-band 2-bit coding metasurface (CM) design to achieve the dual-band functionalities in two different operating bands, independently. We are particularly interested to control linearly-polarized incident waves by encoding the propagation / dynamic phase in order to realize and fully control the orbital angular momentum (OAM) vortex beam (VB) for dual-band, independently. In this regard, we perform digital addition operations to combine the coding sequences of traditional OAM and phase-gradient to construct the proposed CM. The proposed CM generates and steers the OAM-VB with different topological charges in both lower and higher bands, independently. Similarly, the proposed CM is further extended for OAM-VB shaping by combining the coding sequences of traditional OAM and splitting phase unit-cells, and, we discuss two different scenarios. Firstly, OAM-VB splitting is performed to achieve different topological charges in both lower and higher bands, independently. Secondly, quad-beam shaping is realized to verify the proposed concept of this paper. Finally yet importantly, we also examine that the reflected beam directions can be further independently controlled to achieve anomalous, negative and retro-reflection at two different operating bands. The proposed concept will open up possibilities of multi-functional meta-devices and will be useful in many applications such as optical spanners, quantum optics, spatial mode multiplexing for telecommunications, and astronomy etc.

Wireless Communications with Programmable Metasurface: Transceiver Design and Experimental Results

Metasurfaces have drawn significant attentions due to their superior capability in tailoring electromagnetic waves with a wide frequency range, from microwave to visible light. Recently, programmable metasurfaces have demonstrated the ability of manipulating the amplitude or phase of electromagnetic waves in a programmable manner in real time, which renders them especially appealing in the applications of wireless communications. To practically demonstrate the feasibility of programmable metasurfaces in future communication systems, in this paper, we design and realize a novel metasurface-based wireless communication system. By exploiting the dynamically controllable property of programmable metasurface, we firstly introduce the fundamental principle of the metasurface-based wireless communication system design. We then present the design, implementation and experimental evaluation of the proposed metasurface-based wireless communication system with a prototype, which realizes single carrier quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) transmission over the air. In the developed prototype, the phase of the reflected electromagnetic wave of programmable metasurface is directly manipulated in real time according to the baseband control signal, which achieves 2.048 Mbps data transfer rate with video streaming transmission over the air. Experimental result is provided to compare the performance of the proposed metasurface-based architecture against the conventional one. With the slight increase of the transmit power by 5 dB, the same bit error rate (BER) performance can be achieved as the conventional system in the absence of channel coding. Such a result is encouraging considering that the metasurface-based system has the advantages of low hardware cost and simple structure, thus leading to a promising new architecture for wireless communications.
