Stochastic nonzero-sum games: a new connection between singular control and optimal stopping

In this paper we establish a new connection between a class of 2-player nonzero-sum games of optimal stopping and certain $2$-player nonzero-sum games of singular control. We show that whenever a Nash equilibrium in the game of stopping is attained by hitting times at two separate boundaries, then such boundaries also trigger a Nash equilibrium in the game of singular control. Moreover a differential link between the players' value functions holds across the two games.

The dividend problem with a finite horizon

We characterise the value function of the optimal dividend problem with a finite time horizon as the unique classical solution of a suitable Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation. The optimal dividend strategy is realised by a Skorokhod reflection of the fund's value at a time-dependent optimal boundary. Our results are obtained by establishing for the first time a new connection between singular control problems with an absorbing boundary and optimal stopping problems on a diffusion reflected at $0$ and created at a rate proportional to its local time.

A note on a new existence result for reflected BSDEs with interconnected obstacles

In this note we prove existence of a solution to a system of Markovian BSDEs with interconnected obstacles. A key feature of our system, and the main novelty of this paper, is that we allow for the driver $f_i$ of the $i$-th component of the $Y$-process to depend on all components of the $Z$-process. This extends the existing theory on reflected BSDEs, which only addresses problems where $f_i$ depends on $Z^i$.

Nash equilibria of threshold type for two-player nonzero-sum games of stopping

This paper analyses two-player nonzero-sum games of optimal stopping on a class of linear regular diffusions with not non-singular boundary behaviour (in the sense of Itô and McKean (1974), p.\ 108). We provide sufficient conditions under which Nash equilibria are realised by each player stopping the diffusion at one of the two boundary points of an interval. The boundaries of this interval solve a system of algebraic equations. We also provide conditions sufficient for the uniqueness of the equilibrium in this class.

Integral equations for Rost's reversed barriers: existence and uniqueness results

We establish that the boundaries of the so-called Rost's reversed barrier are the unique couple of left-continuous monotonic functions solving a suitable system of nonlinear integral equations of Volterra type. Our result holds for atom-less target distributions $μ$ of the related Skorokhod embedding problem. The integral equations we obtain here generalise the ones often arising in optimal stopping literature and our proof of the uniqueness of the solution goes beyond the existing results in the field.

Optimal Boundary Surface for Irreversible Investment with Stochastic Costs

This paper examines a Markovian model for the optimal irreversible investment problem of a firm aiming at minimizing total expected costs of production. We model market uncertainty and the cost of investment per unit of production capacity as two independent one-dimensional regular diffusions, and we consider a general convex running cost function. The optimization problem is set as a three-dimensional degenerate singular stochastic control problem. We provide the optimal control as the solution of a Skorohod reflection problem at a suitable boundary surface. Such boundary arises from the analysis of a family of two-dimensional parameter-dependent optimal stopping problems and it is characterized in terms of the family of unique continuous solutions to parameter-dependent nonlinear integral equations of Fredholm type.

On the optimal exercise boundaries of swing put options

We use probabilistic methods to characterise time dependent optimal stopping boundaries in a problem of multiple optimal stopping on a finite time horizon. Motivated by financial applications we consider a payoff of immediate stopping of "put" type and the underlying dynamics follows a geometric Brownian motion. The optimal stopping region relative to each optimal stopping time is described in terms of two boundaries which are continuous, monotonic functions of time and uniquely solve a system of coupled integral equations of Volterra-type. Finally we provide a formula for the value function of the problem.

From optimal stopping boundaries to Rost's reversed barriers and the Skorokhod embedding

We provide a new probabilistic proof of the connection between Rost's solution of the Skorokhod embedding problem and a suitable family of optimal stopping problems for Brownian motion with finite time-horizon. In particular we use stochastic calculus to show that the time reversal of the optimal stopping sets for such problems forms the so-called Rost's reversed barrier.

Optimal Entry to an Irreversible Investment Plan with Non Convex Costs

A problem of optimally purchasing electricity at a real-valued spot price (that is, with potentially negative cost) has been recently addressed in De Angelis, Ferrari and Moriarty (2015) [SIAM J. Control Optim. 53(3)]. This problem can be considered one of irreversible investment with a cost functional which is non convex with respect to the control variable. In this paper we study the optimal entry into this investment plan. The optimal entry policy can have an irregular boundary arising from this non convexity, with a kinked shape.

A solvable two-dimensional singular stochastic control problem with non convex costs

In this paper we provide a complete theoretical analysis of a two-dimensional degenerate non convex singular stochastic control problem. The optimisation is motivated by a storage-consumption model in an electricity market, and features a stochastic real-valued spot price modelled by Brownian motion. We find analytical expressions for the value function, the optimal control and the boundaries of the action and inaction regions. The optimal policy is characterised in terms of two monotone and discontinuous repelling free boundaries, although part of one boundary is constant and the smooth fit condition holds there.

A Stochastic Partially Reversible Investment Problem on a Finite Time-Horizon: Free-Boundary Analysis

We study a continuous-time, finite horizon, stochastic partially reversible investment problem for a firm producing a single good in a market with frictions. The production capacity is modeled as a one-dimensional, time-homogeneous, linear diffusion controlled by a bounded variation process which represents the cumulative investment-disinvestment strategy. We associate to the investment-disinvestment problem a zero-sum optimal stopping game and characterize its value function through a free-boundary problem with two moving boundaries. These are continuous, bounded and monotone curves that solve a system of non-linear integral equations of Volterra type. The optimal investment-disinvestment strategy is then shown to be a diffusion reflected at the two boundaries.

A Non Convex Singular Stochastic Control Problem and its Related Optimal Stopping Boundaries

Equivalences are known between problems of singular stochastic control (SSC) with convex performance criteria and related questions of optimal stopping, see for example Karatzas and Shreve [SIAM J. Control Optim. 22 (1984)]. The aim of this paper is to investigate how far connections of this type generalise to a non convex problem of purchasing electricity. Where the classical equivalence breaks down we provide alternative connections to optimal stopping problems. We consider a non convex infinite time horizon SSC problem whose state consists of an uncontrolled diffusion representing a real-valued commodity price, and a controlled increasing bounded process representing an inventory. We analyse the geometry of the action and inaction regions by characterising their (optimal) boundaries. Unlike the case of convex SSC problems we find that the optimal boundaries may be both reflecting and repelling and it is natural to interpret the problem as one of SSC with discretionary stopping.

Analytical Pricing of American Bond Options in the Heath-Jarrow-Morton Model

We study the optimal stopping problem of pricing an American Put option on a Zero Coupon Bond (ZCB) in the Musiela's parametrization of the Heath-Jarrow-Morton (HJM) model for forward interest rates. First we show regularity properties of the price function by probabilistic methods. Then we find an infinite dimensional variational formulation of the pricing problem by approximating the original optimal stopping problem by finite dimensional ones, after a suitable smoothing of the payoff. As expected, the first time the price of the American bond option equals the payoff is shown to be optimal.

A note on the continuity of free-boundaries in finite-horizon optimal stopping problems for one dimensional diffusions

We provide sufficient conditions for the continuity of the free-boundary in a general class of finite-horizon optimal stopping problems arising for instance in finance and economics. The underlying process is a strong solution of one dimensional, time-homogeneous stochastic differential equation (SDE). The proof relies on both analytic and probabilistic arguments and it is based on a contradiction scheme inspired by the maximum principle in partial differential equations (PDE) theory. Mild, local regularity of the coefficients of the SDE and smoothness of the gain function locally at the boundary are required.

Wigner-function theory and decoherence of the quantum-injected optical parametric amplifier

Recent experimental results demonstrated the generation of a quantum superpositon (MQS), involving a number of photons in excess of 5x10^4, which showed a high resilience to losses. In order to perform a complete analysis on the effects of de-coherence on this multiphoton fields, obtained through the Quantum Injected Optical Parametric Amplifier (QIOPA), we invesigate theoretically the evolution of the Wigner functions associated to these states in lossy conditions. Recognizing the presence of negative regions in the W-representation as an evidence of non-classicality, we focus our analysis on this feature. A close comparison with the MQS based on coherent states allows to identify differences and analogies.

Experimental macroscopic coherence by phase-covariant cloning of a single photon

We investigate the multiphoton states generated by high-gain optical parametric amplification of a single injected photon, polarization encoded as a ''qubit''. The experiment configuration exploits the optimal phase-covariant cloning in the high gain regime. The interference fringe pattern showing the non local transfer of coherence between the injected qubit and the mesoscopic amplified output field involving up to 4000 photons has been investigated. A probabilistic new method to extract full information about the multiparticle output wavefunction has been implemented.

Experimental test of the no signaling theorem

In 1981 N. Herbert proposed a gedanken experiment in order to achieve by the ''First Laser Amplified Superluminal Hookup'' (FLASH) a faster than light communication (FTL) by quantum nonlocality. The present work reports the first experimental realization of that proposal by the optical parametric amplification of a single photon belonging to an entangled EPR pair into an output field involving 5 x 10^3 photons. A thorough theoretical and experimental analysis explains in general and conclusive terms the precise reasons for the failure of the FLASH program as well as of any similar FTL proposals.
