Megahertz X-ray microscopy at X-ray Free-Electron Laser and Synchrotron sources

We demonstrate X-ray phase contrast microscopy performed at the European X-ray Free-Electron Laser sampled at 1.128 MHz rate. We have applied this method to image stochastic processes induced by an optical laser incident on water-filled capillaries with micrometer scale spatial resolution. The generated high speed water jet, cavitation formation and annihilation in water and glass, as well as glass explosions are observed. The comparison between XFEL and previous synchrotron MHz microscopy shows the superior contrast and spatial resolution at the XFEL over the synchrotron. This work opens up new possibilities for the characterization of dynamic stochastic systems on nanosecond to microsecond time scales at megahertz rate with object velocities up to few kilometers per second using X-ray Free-Electron Laser sources.

A supercritical scalar field equation with a forcing term

This paper is concerned with the elliptic problem for a scalar field equation with a forcing term \begin{equation} \tag{P}-Δu+u=u^p+ κμ\quad \mbox{in} \quad{\bf R}^N, \quad u>0 \quad \mbox{in} \quad {\bf R}^N, \quad u(x)\to 0\quad \mbox{as} \quad |x| \to \infty, \end{equation} where $N\ge 2$, $p>1$, $κ>0$ and $μ$ is a Radon measure in ${\bf R}^N$ with a compact support. Under a suitable integrability condition on $μ$, we give a complete classification of the solvability of problem~(P) with $1<p<p_{JL}$. Here $p_{JL}$ is the Joseph-Lundgren exponent defined by $$ p_{JL} :=\infty\quad\mbox{if}\quad N\le 10, \qquad p_{JL}:=\frac{(N-2)^2-4N+8\sqrt{N-1}}{(N-2)(N-10)}\quad \text{if} \quad N\ge 11. $$

Certain identities on derivatives of radial homogeneous and logarithmic functions

Let $k$ be a natural number and $s$ be real. In the 1-dimensional case, the $k$-th order derivatives of the functions $\lvert x\rvert^s$ and $\log \lvert x\rvert$ are multiples of $\lvert x\rvert^{s-k}$ and $\lvert x\rvert^{-k}$, respectively. In the present paper, we generalize this fact to higher dimensions by introducing a suitable norm of the derivatives, and give the exact values of the multiples.

Complex structural dynamics of bismuth under laser-driven compression

With the aid of nanosecond time-resolved X-ray diffraction techniques, we have explored the complex structural dynamics of bismuth under laser-driven compression. The results demonstrate that shocked bismuth undergoes a series of structural transformations involving four solid structures: the Bi-I, Bi-II, Bi-III and Bi-V phases. The transformation from the Bi-I phase to the Bi-V phase occurs within 4 ns under shock compression at ~11 GPa, showing no transient phases with the available experimental conditions. Successive phase transitions (Bi-V->Bi-III->Bi-II->Bi-I) during the shock release within 30 ns have also been resolved, which were inaccessible using other dynamic techniques.

Reversible phase transition in laser-shocked 3Y-TZP ceramics observed via nanosecond time-resolved X-ray diffraction

The high-pressure phase stability of the metastable tetragonal zirconia is still under debate. The transition dynamics of shocked Y2O3 (3 mol%) stabilized tetragonal zirconia ceramics under laser-shock compression has been directly studied using nanosecond time-resolved X-ray diffraction. The martensitic phase transformation to the monoclinic phase, which is the stable phase for pure zirconia at ambient pressure and room temperature, has been observed during compression at 5 GPa within 20 ns without any intermediates. This monoclinic phase reverts back to the tetragonal phase during pressure release. The results imply that the stabilization effect due to addition of Y2O3 is negated by the shear stress under compression.
