Exact nonequilibrium steady states of boundary driven circuit with XYZ gates

We obtain the exact many-body density operator of a boundary-driven XXZ quantum circuit via a spatially inhomogeneous matrix product Ansatz. The Ansatz has formally infinite bond-dimension and generalizes authors' previous construction \cite{2025XXZcircuit} for the XXZ interactions. The boundary qubits are coupled to reset quantum channels that project them toward arbitrary pure target states. We find and describe a family of relatively robust separable chiral nonequilibrium steady states (NESS), which are elliptic analogs of spin helices for the circuit, and which are particularly attractive from an experimental perspective.

Anomalous transport in non-integrable classical field theories

Anomalous KPZ spin transport is well established in integrable non-Abelian lattice models but has not been investigated in continuum field theories as discretization in numerics generally break the continuum theory's integrability. We show that finite temperature acts as a regulator that can restore anomalous transport over a broad time window. In a family of spin field theories labeled by integer $n$, the $n = 1$ case is the Landau-Lifshitz model, whose numerical data shows spin superdiffusion with Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) scaling and, at lower temperature ballistic energy transport, whereas both observables are diffusive at high temperature. The non-integrable $n = 2$ case shows the same crossover. While Lyapunov analysis confirms the model's non-integrability, the structure of spin-density space-time profiles suggests that long-lived soliton-like trajectories exist at low temperature.

Bethe-ansatz diagonalization of steady state of boundary driven integrable spin chains

We find that the density operator of non-equilibrium steady state (NESS) of XXZ spin chain with strong ``sink and source" boundary dissipation, can be described in terms of quasiparticles, with renormalized -- dissipatively dressed -- dispersion relation. The spectrum of the NESS is then fully accounted for by Bethe ansatz equations for an associated coherent system. The dissipative dressing generates an extra singularity in the dispersion relation, which strongly modifies the NESS spectrum with respect to the spectrum of the corresponding coherent model. In particular, this leads to a dissipation-assisted entropy reduction, due to the suppression -- in the NESS spectrum -- of plain wave-type Bethe states in favor of Bethe states localized at the boundaries.

Localised Dynamics in the Floquet Quantum East Model

We introduce and study the discrete-time version of the Quantum East model, an interacting quantum spin chain inspired by simple kinetically constrained models of classical glasses. Previous work has established that its continuous-time counterpart displays a disorder-free localisation transition signalled by the appearance of an exponentially large (in the volume) family of non-thermal, localised eigenstates. Here we combine analytical and numerical approaches to show that: i) The transition persists for discrete times, in fact, it is present for any finite value of the time step apart from a zero measure set; ii) It is directly detected by following the non-equilibrium dynamics of the fully polarised state. Our findings imply that the transition is currently observable in state-of-the-art platforms for digital quantum simulation.

On two non-ergodic reversible cellular automata, one classical, the other quantum

We propose and discuss two variants of kinetic particle models - cellular automata in 1+1 dimensions, which have some appeal due to their simplicity and intriguing properties which could warrant further research and applications. The first model is a deterministic and reversible automaton describing two species of quasiparticles: stable massless matter particles moving with velocity $\pm 1$ and unstable, standing (zero velocity) field particles. We discuss two distinct continuity equations for three conserved charges of the model. While the first two charges and the corresponding currents have support three (3) lattice sites and represent a lattice analogue of conserved energy-momentum tensor, we find an additional conserved charge and current with support of nine (9) sites, implying non-ergodic behaviour and potentially signalling integrability of the model with a highly nested R-matrix structure. The second model represents a quantum (or stochastic) deformation of a recently introduced and studied charged hardpoint lattice gas, where particles of different binary charge ($\pm 1$) and binary velocity ($\pm 1$) can nontrivially mix upon elastic collisional scattering. We show that while the unitary evolution rule of this model does not satisfy the full Yang-Baxter equation, it still satisfies an intriguing related identity which gives birth to an infinite set of local conserved operators, the-so-called glider operators.

Boundary driven $XYZ$ chain: Exact inhomogeneous triangular matrix product ansatz

We construct an explicit matrix product ansatz for the steady state of a boundary driven $XY\!Z$ spin-$\tfrac{1}{2}$ chain for arbitrary local polarizing channels at the chain's ends. The ansatz, where the Lax operators are written explicitly in terms of infinite-dimensional bidiagonal (triangular) site-dependent matrices, becomes exact either in the (Zeno) limit of infinite dissipation strength, or thermodynamic limit of infinite chain length. The solution is based on an extension of the newly discovered family of separable eigenstates of the model.

Exact Spectral Statistics in Strongly Localised Circuits

Since the seminal work of Anderson, localisation has been recognised as a standard mechanism allowing quantum many-body systems to escape ergodicity. This idea acquired even more prominence in the last decade as it has been argued that localisation -- dubbed many-body localisation (MBL) in this context -- can sometimes survive local interactions in the presence of sufficiently strong disorder. A conventional signature of localisation is in the statistical properties of the spectrum -- spectral statistics -- which differ qualitatively from those in the ergodic phase. Although features of the spectral statistics are routinely used as numerical diagnostics for localisation, they have never been derived from first principles in the presence of non-trivial interactions. Here we fill this gap and provide the example of a simple class of quantum many-body systems -- which we dub strongly localised quantum circuits -- that are interacting, localised, and where the spectral statistics can be characterised exactly. Furthermore, we show that these systems exhibit a cascade of three different regimes for spectral correlations depending on the energy scale: at small, intermediate, and large scales they behave as disconnected patches of three decreasing sizes. We argue that these features appear in generic MBL systems, with the difference that only at the smallest scale they do become Poissonian.

Thermalisation Dynamics and Spectral Statistics of Extended Systems with Thermalising Boundaries

We study thermalisation and spectral properties of extended systems connected, through their boundaries, to a thermalising Markovian bath. Specifically, we consider periodically driven systems modelled by brickwork quantum circuits where a finite section (block) of the circuit is constituted by arbitrary local unitary gates while its complement, which plays the role of the bath, is dual-unitary. We show that the evolution of local observables and the spectral form factor are determined by the same quantum channel, which we use to characterise the system's dynamics and spectral properties. In particular, we identify a family of fine-tuned quantum circuits -- which we call strongly non-ergodic -- that fails to thermalise even in this controlled setting, and, accordingly, their spectral form factor does not follow the random matrix theory prediction. We provide a set of necessary conditions on the local quantum gates that lead to strong non-ergodicity, and in the case of qubits, we provide a complete classification of strongly non-ergodic circuits. We also study the opposite extreme case of circuits that are almost dual-unitary, i.e., where thermalisation occurs with the fastest possible rate. We show that, in these systems, local observables and spectral form factor approach respectively thermal values and random matrix theory prediction exponentially fast. We provide a perturbative characterisation of the dynamics and, in particular, of the time-scale for thermalisation.

Reversible Cellular Automata as Integrable Interactions Round-a-Face: Deterministic, Stochastic, and Quantized

A family of reversible deterministic cellular automata, including the rules 54 and 201 of [Bobenko et al., Commun. Math. Phys. 158, 127 (1993)] as well as their kinetically constrained quantum (unitary) or stochastic deformations, is shown to correspond to integrable Floquet circuit models with local interactions round-a-face. Using inhomogeneous solutions of the star-triangle relation with a one or two dimensional spectral parameter, changing their functional form depending on the orientation, we provide an explicit construction of the transfer matrix and establish its conservation law and involutivity properties. Integrability is independently demonstrated by numerically exploring the spectral statistics via the Berry-Tabor conjecture. Curiously, we find that the deformed rule 54 model generically possesses no other local conserved quantities besides the net soliton current.

Many Body Quantum Chaos and Dual Unitarity Round-a-Face

We propose a new type of locally interacting quantum circuits which are generated by unitary interactions round-a-face (IRF). Specifically, we discuss a set (or manifold) of dual-unitary IRFs with local Hilbert space dimension $d$ (DUIRF$(d)$) which generate unitary evolutions both in space and time directions of an extended 1+1 dimensional lattice. We show how arbitrary dynamical correlation functions of local observables can be evaluated in terms of finite dimensional completely positive trace preserving unital maps, in complete analogy to recently studied circuits made of dual unitary brick gates (DUBG). In fact, we show that the simplest non-trivial (non-vanishing) local correlation functions in dual-unitary IRF circuits involve observables non-trivially supported on at least two sites. We completely characterise the 10-dimensional manifold of DUIRF$(2)$ for qubits ($d=2$) and provide, for $d=3,4,5,6,7$, empirical estimates of its dimensionality based on numerically determined dimensions of tangent spaces at an ensemble of random instances of dual-unitary IRF gates. In parallel, we apply the same algorithm to determine ${\rm dim}\,{\rm DUBG}(d)$ and show that they are of similar order though systematically larger than ${\rm dim}\,{\rm DUIRF}(d)$ for $d=2,3,4,5,6,7$. It is remarkable that both sets have rather complex topology for $d\ge 3$ in the sense that the dimension of the tangent space varies among different randomly generated points of the set. Finally, we provide additional data on dimensionality of the chiral extension of DUBG circuits with distinct local Hilbert spaces of dimensions $d\neq d'$ residing at even/odd lattice sites.

Random Matrix Spectral Form Factor of Dual-Unitary Quantum Circuits

We investigate a class of brickwork-like quantum circuits on chains of $d-$level systems (qudits) that share the so-called `dual unitarity' property. Namely, these systems generate unitary dynamics not only when propagating in the time direction, but also when propagating in the space direction. We consider space-time homogeneous (Floquet) circuits and perturb them with a quenched single-site disorder, i.e. by applying independent single site random unitaries drawn from arbitrary non-singular distribution over ${\rm SU}(d)$, e.g. one concentrated around the identity, after each layer of the circuit. We identify the spectral form factor at time $t$ in the limit of long chains as the dimension of the commutant of a finite set of operators on a qudit ring of $t$ sites. For general dual unitary circuits of qubits $(d=2)$ and a family of their extensions to higher $d>2$, we provide explicit construction of the commutant and prove that spectral form factor exactly matches the prediction of circular unitary ensemble for all $t$, if only the local 2-qubit gates are different from a SWAP (non-interacting gate). We discuss and partly prove possible extensions of our results to a weaker (more singular) forms of disorder averaging, as well as to quantum circuits with time-reversal symmetry, and to computing higher moments of the spectral form factor.

Signatures of Chaos in Non-integrable Models of Quantum Field Theory

We study signatures of quantum chaos in (1+1)D Quantum Field Theory (QFT) models. Our analysis is based on the method of Hamiltonian truncation, a numerical approach for the construction of low-energy spectra and eigenstates of QFTs that can be considered as perturbations of exactly solvable models. We focus on the double sine-Gordon, also studying the massive sine-Gordon and ${\phi^4}$ model, all of which are non-integrable and can be studied by this method with sufficiently high precision from small to intermediate perturbation strength. We analyze the statistics of level spacings and of eigenvector components, both of which are expected to follow Random Matrix Theory predictions. While level spacing statistics are close to the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble as expected, on the contrary, the eigenvector components follow a distribution markedly different from the expected Gaussian. Unlike in the typical quantum chaos scenario, the transition of level spacing statistics to chaotic behaviour takes place already in the perturbative regime. On the other hand, the distribution of eigenvector components does not appear to change or approach Gaussian behaviour, even for relatively large perturbations. Moreover, our results suggest that these features are independent of the choice of model and basis.

Statistics of the Spectral Form Factor in the Self-Dual Kicked Ising Model

We compute the full probability distribution of the spectral form factor in the self-dual kicked Ising model by providing an exact lower bound for each moment and verifying numerically that the latter is saturated. We show that at large enough times the probability distribution agrees exactly with the prediction of Random Matrix Theory if one identifies the appropriate ensemble of random matrices. We find that this ensemble is not the circular orthogonal one - composed of symmetric random unitary matrices and associated with time-reversal-invariant evolution operators - but is an ensemble of random matrices on a more restricted symmetric space (depending on the parity of the number of sites this space is either ${Sp(N)/U(N)}$ or ${O(2N)/{O(N)\!\times\!O(N)}}$). Even if the latter ensembles yield the same averaged spectral form factor as the circular orthogonal ensemble they show substantially enhanced fluctuations. This behaviour is due to a recently identified additional anti-unitary symmetry of the self-dual kicked Ising model.

Rigorous bounds on dynamical response functions and time-translation symmetry breaking

Dynamical response functions are standard tools for probing local physics near the equilibrium. They provide information about relaxation properties after the equilibrium state is weakly perturbed. In this paper we focus on systems which break the assumption of thermalization by exhibiting persistent temporal oscillations. We provide rigorous bounds on the Fourier components of dynamical response functions in terms of extensive or local dynamical symmetries, i.e. extensive or local operators with periodic time dependence. Additionally, we discuss the effects of spatially inhomogeneous dynamical symmetries. The bounds are explicitly implemented on the example of an interacting Floquet system, specifically in the integrable Trotterization of the Heisenberg XXZ model.

Exact dynamics in dual-unitary quantum circuits

We consider the class of dual-unitary quantum circuits in $1+1$ dimensions and introduce a notion of ``solvable'' matrix product states (MPSs), defined by a specific condition which allows us to tackle their time evolution analytically. We provide a classification of the latter, showing that they include certain MPSs of arbitrary bond dimension, and study analytically different aspects of their dynamics. For these initial states, we show that while any subsystem of size $\ell$ reaches infinite temperature after a time $t\propto \ell$, irrespective of the presence of conserved quantities, the light-cone of two-point correlation functions displays qualitatively different features depending on the ergodicity of the quantum circuit, defined by the behavior of infinite-temperature dynamical correlation functions. Furthermore, we study the entanglement spreading from such solvable initial states, providing a closed formula for the time evolution of the entanglement entropy of a connected block. This generalizes recent results obtained in the context of the self-dual kicked Ising model. By comparison, we also consider a family of non-solvable initial mixed states depending on one real parameter $\beta$, which, as $\beta$ is varied from zero to infinity, interpolate between the infinite temperature density matrix and arbitrary initial pure product states. We study analytically their dynamics for small values of $\beta$, and highlight the differences from the case of solvable MPSs.

Universal Signature from Integrability to Chaos in Dissipative Open Quantum Systems

We study the transition between integrable and chaotic behaviour in dissipative open quantum systems, exemplified by a boundary driven quantum spin-chain. The repulsion between the complex eigenvalues of the corresponding Liouville operator in radial distance $s$ is used as a universal measure. The corresponding level spacing distribution is well fitted by that of a static two-dimensional Coulomb gas with harmonic potential at inverse temperature $\beta\in[0,2]$. Here, $\beta=0$ yields the two-dimensional Poisson distribution, matching the integrable limit of the system, and $\beta=2$ equals the distribution obtained from the complex Ginibre ensemble, describing the fully chaotic limit. Our findings generalise the results of Grobe, Haake and Sommers who derived a universal cubic level repulsion for small spacings $s$. We collect mathematical evidence for the universality of the full level spacing distribution in the fully chaotic limit at $\beta=2$. It holds for all three Ginibre ensembles of random matrices with independent real, complex or quaternion matrix elements.

Operator Entanglement in Local Quantum Circuits I: Chaotic Dual-Unitary Circuits

The entanglement in operator space is a well established measure for the complexity of the quantum many-body dynamics. In particular, that of local operators has recently been proposed as dynamical chaos indicator, i.e. as a quantity able to discriminate between quantum systems with integrable and chaotic dynamics. For chaotic systems the local-operator entanglement is expected to grow linearly in time, while it is expected to grow at most logarithmically in the integrable case. Here we study local-operator entanglement in dual-unitary quantum circuits, a class of "statistically solvable" quantum circuits that we recently introduced. We identify a class of "completely chaotic" dual-unitary circuits where the local-operator entanglement grows linearly and we provide a conjecture for its asymptotic behaviour which is in excellent agreement with the numerical results. Interestingly, our conjecture also predicts a "phase transition" in the slope of the local-operator entanglement when varying the parameters of the circuits.

Operator Entanglement in Local Quantum Circuits II: Solitons in Chains of Qubits

We provide exact results for the dynamics of local-operator entanglement in quantum circuits with two-dimensional wires featuring ultralocal solitons, i.e. single-site operators which, up to a phase, are simply shifted by the time evolution. We classify all circuits allowing for ultralocal solitons and show that only dual-unitary circuits can feature moving ultralocal solitons. Then, we rigorously prove that if a circuit has an ultralocal soliton moving to the left (right), the entanglement of local operators initially supported on even (odd) sites saturates to a constant value and its dynamics can be computed exactly. Importantly, this does not bound the growth of complexity in chiral circuits, where solitons move only in one direction, say to the left. Indeed, in this case we observe numerically that operators on the odd sublattice have unbounded entanglement. Finally, we present a closed-form expression for the local-operator entanglement entropies in circuits with ultralocal solitons moving in both directions. Our results hold irrespectively of integrability.
