Exact Correlation Functions for Dual-Unitary Lattice Models in 1+1 Dimensions

We consider a class of quantum lattice models in $1+1$ dimensions represented as local quantum circuits that enjoy a particular "dual-unitarity" property. In essence, this property ensures that both the evolution "in time" and that "in space" are given in terms of unitary transfer matrices. We show that for this class of circuits, generically non-integrable, one can compute explicitly all dynamical correlations of local observables. Our result is exact, non-pertubative, and holds for any dimension $d$ of the local Hilbert space. In the minimal case of qubits ($d = 2$) we also present a classification of all dual-unitary circuits which allows us to single out a number of distinct classes for the behaviour of the dynamical correlations. We find "non-interacting" classes, where all correlations are preserved, the ergodic and mixing one, where all correlations decay, and, interestingly, also classes that are are both interacting and non-ergodic.

Kardar-Parisi-Zhang physics in integrable rotationally symmetric dynamics on discrete space-time lattice

We introduce a deterministic SO(3) invariant dynamics of classical spins on a discrete space-time lattice and prove its complete integrability by explicitly finding a related non-constant (baxterized) solution of the set-theoretic quantum Yang-Baxter equation over the 2-sphere. Equipping the algebraic structure with the corresponding Lax operator we derive an infinite sequence of conserved quantities with local densities. The dynamics depend on a single continuous spectral parameter and reduce to a (lattice) Landau-Lifshitz model in the limit of a small parameter which corresponds to the continuous time limit. Using quasi-exact numerical simulations of deterministic dynamics and Monte Carlo sampling of initial conditions corresponding to a maximum entropy equilibrium state we determine spin-spin spatio-temporal (dynamical) correlation functions with relative accuracy of three orders of magnitude. We demonstrate that in the equilibrium state with a vanishing total magnetization the correlation function precisely follow Kardar-Parisi-Zhang scaling hence the spin transport belongs to the universality class with dynamical exponent z=3/2, in accordance to recent related simulations in discrete and continuous time quantum Heisenberg spin 1/2 chains.

Kardar-Parisi-Zhang physics in the quantum Heisenberg magnet

Equilibrium spatio-temporal correlation functions are central to understanding weak nonequilibrium physics. In certain local one-dimensional classical systems with three conservation laws they show universal features. Namely, fluctuations around ballistically propagating sound modes can be described by the celebrated Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class. Can such universality class be found also in quantum systems? By unambiguously demonstrating that the KPZ scaling function describes magnetization dynamics in the SU(2) symmetric Heisenberg spin chain we show, for the first time, that this is so. We achieve that by introducing new theoretical and numerical tools, and make a puzzling observation that the conservation of energy does not seem to matter for the KPZ physics.

Few Islands Approximation of Hamiltonian System with divided Phase Space

It is well known that typical Hamiltonian systems have divided phase space consisting of regions with regular dynamics on KAM tori and region(s) with chaotic dynamics called chaotic sea(s). This complex structure makes rigorous analysis of such systems virtually impossible and significantly complicates numerical exploration of their dynamical properties. In this paper we outline a new approach for the analysis of Hamiltonian systems with divided phase space. These systems are approximated by a sequence of Hamiltonian systems having an increasing (but finite) number of KAM islands. The islands in the approximating systems are sub-islands of the islands in the initial system with an infinite number of KAM-islands. We apply this approach to two-dimensional billiards and demonstrate that it works. In particular the statistical characteristics of the approximating systems tend to the ones for the whole system when the number of islands in the approximating systems grows. Therefore our approach opens up a new way for numerical and analytical studies of the dynamics of Hamiltonian systems with divided phase space.

Entanglement spreading in a minimal model of maximal many-body quantum chaos

The spreading of entanglement in out-of-equilibrium quantum systems is currently at the centre of intense interdisciplinary research efforts involving communities with interests ranging from holography to quantum information. Here we provide a constructive and mathematically rigorous method to compute the entanglement dynamics in a class of "maximally chaotic", periodically driven, quantum spin chains. Specifically, we consider the so called "self-dual" kicked Ising chains initialised in a class of separable states and devise a method to compute exactly the time evolution of the entanglement entropies of finite blocks of spins in the thermodynamic limit. Remarkably, these exact results are obtained despite the models considered are maximally chaotic: their spectral correlations are described by the circular orthogonal ensemble of random matrices on all scales. Our results saturate the so called "minimal cut" bound and are in agreement with those found in the contexts of random unitary circuits with infinite-dimensional local Hilbert space and conformal field theory. In particular, they agree with the expectations from both the quasiparticle picture, which accounts for the entanglement spreading in integrable models, and the minimal membrane picture, recently proposed to describe the entanglement growth in generic systems. Based on a novel "duality-based" numerical method, we argue that our results describe the entanglement spreading from any product state at the leading order in time when the model is non-integrable.

Exact Spectral Form Factor in a Minimal Model of Many-Body Quantum Chaos

The most general and versatile defining feature of quantum chaotic systems is that they possess an energy spectrum with correlations universally described by random matrix theory (RMT). This feature can be exhibited by systems with a well defined classical limit as well as by systems with no classical correspondence, such as locally interacting spins or fermions. Despite great phenomenological success, a general mechanism explaining the emergence of RMT without reference to semiclassical concepts is still missing. Here we provide the example of a quantum many-body system with no semiclassical limit (no large parameter) where the emergence of RMT spectral correlations is proven exactly. Specifically, we consider a periodically driven Ising model and write the Fourier transform of spectral density's two-point function, the spectral form factor, in terms of a partition function of a two-dimensional classical Ising model featuring a space-time duality. We show that the self-dual cases provide a minimal model of many-body quantum chaos, where the spectral form factor is demonstrated to match RMT for all values of the integer time variable $t$ in the thermodynamic limit. In particular, we rigorously prove RMT form factor for odd $t$, while we formulate a precise conjecture for even $t$. The results imply ergodicity for any finite amount of disorder in the longitudinal field, rigorously excluding the possibility of many-body localization. Our method provides a novel route for obtaining exact nonperturbative results in non-integrable systems.

Exactly solvable deterministic lattice model of crossover between ballistic and diffusive transport

We discuss a simple deterministic lattice gas of locally interacting charged particles, for which we show coexistence of ballistic and diffusive transport. Both, the ballistic and the diffusive transport coefficients, specifically the Drude weight and the diffusion constant, respectively, are analytically computed for particular set of generalised Gibbs states and may independently vanish for appropriate values of thermodynamic parameters. Moreover, our analysis, based on explicit construction of the matrix representation of time-automorphism in a suitable basis of the algebra of local observables, allows for an exact computation of the dynamic structure factor and closed form solution of the inhomogeneous quench problem.

Time-dependent matrix product ansatz for interacting reversible dynamics

We present an explicit time-dependent matrix product ansatz (tMPA) which describes the time-evolution of any local observable in an interacting and deterministic lattice gas, specifically for the rule 54 reversible cellular automaton of [Bobenko et al., Commun. Math. Phys. 158, 127 (1993)]. Our construction is based on an explicit solution of real-space real-time inverse scattering problem. We consider two applications of this tMPA. Firstly, we provide the first exact and explicit computation of the dynamic structure factor in an interacting deterministic model, and secondly, we solve the extremal case of the inhomogeneous quench problem, where a semi-infinite lattice in the maximum entropy state is joined with an empty semi-infinite lattice. Both of these exact results rigorously demonstrate a coexistence of ballistic and diffusive transport behaviour in the model, as expected for normal fluids.

Many-body quantum chaos: Analytic connection to random matrix theory

A key goal of quantum chaos is to establish a relationship between widely observed universal spectral fluctuations of clean quantum systems and random matrix theory (RMT). For single particle systems with fully chaotic classical counterparts, the problem has been partly solved by Berry (1985) within the so-called diagonal approximation of semiclassical periodic-orbit sums. Derivation of the full RMT spectral form factor $K(t)$ from semiclassics has been completed only much later in a tour de force by Mueller et al (2004). In recent years, the questions of long-time dynamics at high energies, for which the full many-body energy spectrum becomes relevant, are coming at the forefront even for simple many-body quantum systems, such as locally interacting spin chains. Such systems display two universal types of behaviour which are termed as `many-body localized phase' and `ergodic phase'. In the ergodic phase, the spectral fluctuations are excellently described by RMT, even for very simple interactions and in the absence of any external source of disorder. Here we provide the first theoretical explanation for these observations. We compute $K(t)$ explicitly in the leading two orders in $t$ and show its agreement with RMT for non-integrable, time-reversal invariant many-body systems without classical counterparts, a generic example of which are Ising spin 1/2 models in a periodically kicking transverse field.

A class of states supporting diffusive spin dynamics in the isotropic Heisenberg model

The spin transport in isotropic Heisenberg model in the sector with zero magnetization is generically super-diffusive. Despite that, we here demonstrate that for a specific set of domain-wall-like initial product states it can instead be diffusive. We theoretically explain the time evolution of such states by showing that in the limiting regime of weak spatial modulation they are approximately product states for very long times, and demonstrate that even in the case of larger spatial modulation the bipartite entanglement entropy grows only logarithmically in time. In the limiting regime we derive a simple closed equation governing the dynamics, which in the continuum limit and for the initial step magnetization profile results in a solution expressed in terms of Fresnel integrals.

Time-dependent Correlation Functions in Open Quadratic Fermionic Systems

We formulate and discuss explicit computation of dynamic correlation functions in open quadradic fermionic systems which are driven and dissipated by the Lindblad jump processes that are linear in canonical fermionic operators. Dynamic correlators are interpreted in terms of local quantum quench where the pre-quench state is the non-equilibrium steady state, i.e. a fixed point of the Liouvillian. As an example we study the XY spin 1/2 chain and the Kitaev Majorana chains with boundary Lindblad driving, whose dynamics exhibits asymmetric (skewed) light cone behaviour. We also numerically treat the two dimensional XY model and the XY spin chain with additional Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. The latter exhibits a new non-equilibrium phase transition which can be understood in terms of bifurcations of the quasi-particle dispersion relation. Finally, considering in some detail the periodic Kitaev chain (fermionic ring) with dissipation at a single (arbitrary) site, we present analytical expressions for the first order corrections (in the strength of dissipation) to the spectrum and the non-equilibrium steady state (NESS) correlation functions.

Quasilocal Conservation Laws in the Quantum Hirota Model

Extensivity of conservation laws of the quantum Hirota model on a $1+1$ dimensional lattice is considered. This model can be interpreted in terms of an integrable many-body quantum Floquet dynamics. We establish the procedure to generate a continuous family of quasilocal conservation laws from the conserved operators proposed by Faddeev and Volkov. The Hilbert-Schmidt kernel which allows the calculation of inner products of these new conservation laws is explicitly computed. This result has potential applications in quantum quench and transport problems in integrable quantum field theories.

Replica resummation of the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff series

We developed a novel perturbative expansion based on the replica trick for the Floquet Hamiltonian governing the dynamics of periodically kicked systems where the kick strength is the small parameter. The expansion is formally equivalent to an infinite resummation of the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff series in the un-driven (non-perturbed) Hamiltonian, while considering terms up to a finite order in the kick strength. As an application of the replica expansion, we analyze an Ising spin 1/2 chain periodically kicked with magnetic field of strength $h$, which has both longitudinal and transverse components. We demonstrate that even away from the regime of high frequency driving, the heating rate is nonperturbative in the kick strength bounded from above by a stretched exponential: $e^{-{\rm const}\,h^{-1/2}}$. This guarantees existence of a very long pre-thermal regime, where the dynamics is governed by the Floquet Hamiltonian obtained from the replica expansion.

Spin diffusion from an inhomogeneous quench in an integrable system

Generalised hydrodynamics predicts universal ballistic transport in integrable lattice systems when prepared in generic inhomogeneous initial states. However, the ballistic contribution to transport can vanish in systems with additional discrete symmetries. Here we perform large scale numerical simulations of spin dynamics in the anisotropic Heisenberg $XXZ$ spin $1/2$ chain starting from an inhomogeneous mixed initial state which is symmetric with respect to a combination of spin-reversal and spatial reflection. In the isotropic and easy-axis regimes we find non-ballistic spin transport which we analyse in detail in terms of scaling exponents of the transported magnetisation and scaling profiles of the spin density. While in the easy-axis regime we find accurate evidence of normal diffusion, the spin transport in the isotropic case is clearly super-diffusive, with the scaling exponent very close to $2/3$, but with universal scaling dynamics which obeys the diffusion equation in nonlinearly scaled time.

Lower Bounding Diffusion Constant by the Curvature of Drude Weight

We establish a general connection between ballistic and diffusive transport in systems where the ballistic contribution in canonical ensemble vanishes. A lower bound on the Green-Kubo diffusion constant is derived in terms of the curvature of the ideal transport coefficient, the Drude weight, with respect to the filling parameter. As an application, we explicitly determine the lower bound on the high temperature diffusion constant in the anisotropic spin 1/2 Heisenberg chain for anisotropy parameters $Δ\geq 1$, thus settling the question whether the transport is sub-diffusive or not. Addi- tionally, the lower bound is shown to saturate the diffusion constant for a certain classical integrable model.

Construction of the steady state density matrix and quasilocal charges for the spin-1/2 XXZ chain with boundary magnetic fields

We construct the nonequilibrium steady state (NESS) density operator of the spin-1/2 XXZ chain with non-diagonal boundary magnetic fields coupled to boundary dissipators. The Markovian boundary dis- sipation is found with which the NESS density operator is expressed in terms of the product of the Lax operators by relating the dissipation parameters to the boundary parameters of the spin chain. The NESS density operator can be expressed in terms of a non-Hermitian transfer operator (NHTO) which forms a commuting family of quasilocal charges. The optimization of the Mazur bound for the high temperature Drude weight is discussed by using the quasilocal charges and the conventional local charges constructed through the Bethe ansatz.

Exact matrix product decay modes of a boundary driven cellular automaton

We study integrability properties of a reversible deterministic cellular automaton (the rule 54 of [Bobenko et al., Commun. Math. Phys. 158, 127 (1993)]) and present a bulk algebraic relation and its inhomogeneous extension which allow for an explicit construction of Liouvillian decay modes for two distinct families of stochastic boundary driving. The spectrum of the many-body stochastic matrix defining the time propagation is found to separate into sets, which we call orbitals, and the eigenvalues in each orbital are found to obey a distinct set of Bethe-like equations. We construct the decay modes in the first orbital (containing the leading decay mode) in terms of an exact inhomogeneous matrix product ansatz, study the thermodynamic properties of the spectrum and the scaling of its gap, and provide a conjecture for the Bethe-like equations for all the orbitals and their degeneracy.

Diffusion in deterministic interacting lattice systems

We study reversible deterministic dynamics of classical charged particles on a lattice with hard-core interaction. It is rigorously shown that the system exhibits three types of transport phenomena, ranging from ballistic, through diffusive to insulating. By obtaining an exact expressions for the current time-autocorrelation function we are able to calculate the linear response transport coefficients, such as the diffusion constant and the Drude weight. Additionally, we calculate the long- time charge profile after an inhomogeneous quench and obtain diffusive profile with the Green-Kubo diffusion constant. Exact analytical results are corroborated by Monte-Carlo simulations.
