Numerical verification of universality for the Anderson transition

We analyze the scaling behavior of the higher Lyapunov exponents at the Anderson transition. We estimate the critical exponent and verify its universality and that of the critical conductance distribution for box, Gaussian and Lorentzian distributions of the random potential.

Topology dependent quantities at the Anderson transition

The boundary condition dependence of the critical behavior for the three dimensional Anderson transition is investigated. A strong dependence of the scaling function and the critical conductance distribution on the boundary conditions is found, while the critical disorder and critical exponent are found to be independent of the boundary conditions.

3D quantum percolation studied by level statistics

We study the metal-insulator transition on a three dimensional quantum percolation model by analyzing energy level statistics. The quantum percolation threshold $\pq$, which is larger than the classical percolation threshold $\pc$, becomes smaller when the time reversal symmetry (TRS) is broken, i.e. $\pq({\rm with TRS})>\pq({\rm without TRS})>\pc$. It is shown that critical exponents are consistent with the result of the Anderson transition, suggesting that the quantum percolation problem can be classified into the same universality classes of the Anderson transition. The shape of level statistics at the critical point is also reported.

Review of recent progress on numerical studies of the Anderson transition

A review of recent progress in numerical studies of the Anderson transition in three dimensional systems is presented. From high precision calculations the critical exponent $ν$ for the divergence of the localization length is estimated to be $ν=1.57\pm 0.02$ for the orthogonal universality class, which is clearly distinguished from $ν=1.43\pm 0.03$ for the unitary universality class. The boundary condition dependences of some quantities at the Anderson transition are also discussed.

Three-Dimensional Quantum Percolation Studied by Level Statistics

Three-dimensional quantum percolation problems are studied by analyzing energy level statistics of electrons on maximally connected percolating clusters. The quantum percolation threshold $\pq$, which is larger than the classical percolation threshold $\pc$, becomes smaller when magnetic fields are applied, i.e., $\pq(B=0)>\pq(B\ne 0)>\pc$. The critical exponents are found to be consistent with the recently obtained values of the Anderson model, supporting the conjecture that the quantum percolation is classified onto the same universality classes of the Anderson transition. Novel critical level statistics at the percolation threshold is also reported.

Corrections to scaling at the Anderson transition

We report a numerical analysis of corrections to finite size scaling at the Anderson transition due to irrelevant scaling variables and non-linearities of the scaling variables. By taking proper account of these corrections, the universality of the critical exponent for the orthogonal universality class for three different distributions of the random potential is convincingly demonstrated.

Transport in two dimensional periodic magnetic fields

Ballistic transport properties in a two dimensional electron gas are studied numerically, where magnetic fields are perpendicular to the plane of two dimensional electron systemsand periodically modulated both in $x$ and $y$ directions. We show that there are three types of trajectories of classical electron motions in this system; chaotic, pinned and runaway trajectories. It is found that the runaway trajectories can explain the peaks of magnetoresistance as a function of external magnetic fields, which is believed to be related to the commensurability effect between the classical cyclotron diameter and the period of magnetic modulation. The similarity with and difference from the results in the antidot lattice are discussed.

Universal conductance distribution in three dimensional systems in high magnetic fields

The nature of the critical point of the Anderson transition in high magnetic fields is discussed with an emphasis on scale invariance and universality of the critical exponent. Special attention is paid to the distribution function of the conductance which becomes size and model independent at the critical point. The fractal properties of the wave function which are related to scale invariance are also discussed.

Anderson transition of three dimensional phonon modes

Anderson transition of the phonon modes is studied numerically. The critical exponent for the divergence of the localization length is estimated using the transfer matrix method, and the statistics of the modes is analyzed. The latter is shown to be in excellent agreement with the energy level statistics of the disrodered electron system belonging to the orthogonal universality class.

Numerical Study of Inelastic Scatterings by Time-Dependent Random Potentials in Two-Dimensional Systems

Diffusion of electrons in a two-dimensional system with time-dependent random potentials is investigated numerically. In the absence of spin-orbit scattering, the conductivity shows universal weak localization correction. In the presence of it, however, the correction to the conductivity weakly depends on the strength of disorder, and becomes vanishingly small close to the metal-insulator transition point.

Novel Scaling Relation of the Energy Spacing Distribution in Quantum-Hall Systems

The shape analysis of the energy spacing distribution $P(s)$ obtained from numerical simulation of two dimensional disordered electron systems subject to strong magnetic fields is performed. In the present work we reanalyze the data obtained in a previous publication. Special moments of the $P(s)$ function related to Rényi-entropy differences show a novel scale invariant relation that is attributed to the presence of one-parameter scaling. This relation seems to show both deviations and universality depending on which Landau-band is considered and whether the disorder is correlated or uncorrelated. Furthermore, our analysis shows the existence of an huge, however, irrelevant length scale in the case of the second lowest Landau-band and no disorder correlations that completely disappears with the introduction of disorder correlations on the range of one magnetic length.

The Anderson transition: time reversal symmetry and universality

We report a finite size scaling study of the Anderson transition. Different scaling functions and different values for the critical exponent have been found, consistent with the existence of the orthogonal and unitary universality classes which occur in the field theory description of the transition. The critical conductance distribution at the Anderson transition has also been investigated and different distributions for the orthogonal and unitary classes obtained.

Dephasing by time-dependent random potentials

Diffusion of electrons in a two-dimensional system with time-dependent random potentials is investigated numerically. The correction to the conductivity due to inelastic scatterings by oscillating potentials is shown to be a universal function of the frequency $ω$, which is consistent with the weak localization prediction $(e^2)/(3π^2 \hbar) log ω$.

Anomalous diffusion at the Anderson transitions

Diffusion of electrons in three dimensional disordered systems is investigated numerically for all the three universality classes, namely, orthogonal, unitary and symplectic ensembles. The second moment of the wave packet $<\vv{r}^2(t)>$ at the Anderson transition is shown to behave as $\sim t^a (a\approx 2/3)$. From the temporal autocorrelation function $C(t)$, the fractal dimension $D_2$ is deduced, which is almost half the value of space dimension for all the universality classes.

Diffusion of electrons in two-dimensional disordered symplectic systems

Diffusion of electrons in two-dimensional disordered systems with spin-orbit interactions is investigated numerically. Asymptotic behaviors of the second moment of the wave packet and of the temporal auto-correlation function are examined. At the critical point, the auto-correlation function exhibits the power-law decay with a non-conventional exponent $α$ which is related to the fractal structure in the energy spectrum and in the wave functions. In the metallic regime, the present results imply that transport properties can be described by the diffusion equation for normal metals.

Critical Level Statistics in Two-dimensional Disordered Electron Systems

The level statistics in the two dimensional disordered electron systems in magnetic fields (unitary ensemble) or in the presence of strong spin-orbit scattering (symplectic ensemble) are investigated at the Anderson transition points. The level spacing distribution functions $P(s)$'s are found to be independent of the system size or of the type of the potential distribution, suggesting the universality. They behave as $s^2$ in the small $s$ region in the former case, while $s^4$ rise is seen in the latter.

Diffusion of electrons in random magnetic fields,

Diffusion of electrons in a two-dimensional system in static random magnetic fields is studied by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation numerically. The asymptotic behaviors of the second moment of the wave packets and the temporal auto-correlation function in such systems are investigated. It is shown that, in the region away from the band edge, the growth of the variance of the wave packets turns out to be diffusive, whereas the exponents for the power-law decay of the temporal auto- correlation function suggest a kind of fractal structure in the energy spectrum and in the wave functions. The present results are consistent with the interpretation that the states away from the band edge region are critical.
