Chalker-Coddington model described by an S-matrix with odd dimensions

The Chalker-Coddington network model is often used to describe the transport properties of quantum Hall systems. By adding an extra channel to this model, we introduce an asymmetric model with profoundly different transport properties. We present a numerical analysis of these transport properties and consider the relevance for realistic systems.

Unconventional conductance plateau transitions in quantum Hall wires with spatially correlated disorder

Quantum transport properties in quantum Hall wires in the presence of spatially correlated random potential are investigated numerically. It is found that the potential correlation reduces the localization length associated with the edge state, in contrast to the naive expectation that the potential correlation increases it. The effect appears as the sizable shift of quantized conductance plateaus in long wires, where the plateau transitions occur at energies much higher than the Landau band centers. The scale of the shift is of the order of the strength of the random potential and is insensitive to the strength of magnetic fields. Experimental implications are also discussed.

Mesoscopic Hall effect driven by chiral spin order

A Hall effect due to spin chirality in mesoscopic systems is predicted. We consider a 4-terminal Hall system including local spins with geometry of a vortex domain wall, where strong spin chirality appears near the center of vortex. The Fermi energy of the conduction electrons is assumed to be comparable to the exchange coupling energy where the adiabatic approximation ceases to be valid. Our results show a Hall effect where a voltage drop and a spin current arise in the transverse direction. The similarity between this Hall effect and the conventional spin Hall effect in systems with spin-orbit interaction is pointed out.

Quantum transport phenomena in disordered electron systems with spin-orbit coupling in two dimensions and below

Electron transport phenomena in disordered electron systems with spin-orbit coupling in two dimensions and below are studied numerically. The scaling hypothesis is checked by analyzing the scaling of the quasi-1D localization length. A logarithmic increase of the mean conductance is also confirmed. These support the theoretical prediction that the two dimensional metal in systems with spin-orbit coupling has a perfect conductivity. Transport through a Sierpinski carpet is also reported.

Nonchiral Edge States at the Chiral Metal Insulator Transition in Disordered Quantum Hall Wires

The quantum phase diagram of disordered wires in a strong magnetic field is studied as a function of wire width and energy. The two-terminal conductance shows zero-temperature discontinuous transitions between exactly integer plateau values and zero. In the vicinity of this transition, the chiral metal-insulator transition (CMIT), states are identified that are superpositions of edge states with opposite chirality. The bulk contribution of such states is found to decrease with increasing wire width. Based on exact diagonalization results for the eigenstates and their participation ratios, we conclude that these states are characteristic for the CMIT, have the appearance of nonchiral edges states, and are thereby distinguishable from other states in the quantum Hall wire, namely, extended edge states, two-dimensionally (2D) localized, quasi-1D localized, and 2D critical states.

Mesoscopic Stern-Gerlach spin filter by nonuniform spin-orbit interaction

A novel spin filtering in two-dimensional electron system with nonuniform spin-orbit interactions (SOI) is theoretically studied. The strength of SOI is modulated perpendicular to the charge current. A spatial gradient of effective magnetic field due to the nonuniform SOI causes the Stern-Gerlach type spin separation. The direction of the polarization is perpendicular to the current and parallel to the spatial gradient. Almost 100 % spin polarization can be realized even without applying any external magnetic fields and without attaching ferromagnetic contacts. The spin polarization persists even in the presence of randomness.

Magnetotransport in inhomogeneous magnetic fields

Quantum transport in inhomogeneous magnetic fields is investigated numerically in two-dimensional systems using the equation of motion method. In particular, the diffusion of electrons in random magnetic fields in the presence of additional weak uniform magnetic fields is examined. It is found that the conductivity is strongly suppressed by the additional uniform magnetic field and saturates when the uniform magnetic field becomes on the order of the fluctuation of the random magnetic field. The value of the conductivity at this saturation is found to be insensitive to the magnitude of the fluctuation of the random field. The effect of random potential on the magnetoconductance is also discussed.

Quantum transport properties of two-dimensional systems in disordered magnetic fields with a fixed sign

Quantum transport in disordered magnetic fields is investigated numerically in two-dimensional systems. In particular, the case where the mean and the fluctuation of disordered magnetic fields are of the same order is considered. It is found that in the limit of weak disorder the conductivity exhibits a qualitatively different behavior from that in the conventional random magnetic fields with zero mean. The conductivity is estimated by the equation of motion method and by the two-terminal Landauer formula. It is demonstrated that the conductance stays on the order of $e^2/h$ even in the weak disorder limit. The present behavior can be interpreted in terms of the Drude formula. The Shubnikov-de Haas oscillation is also observed in the weak disorder regime.

Localization in the quantum Hall regime

The localization properties of electron states in the quantum Hall regime are reviewed. The random Landau model, the random matrix model, the tight-binding Peierls model, and the network model of Chalker and Coddington are introduced. Descriptions in terms of equivalent tight-binding Hamiltonians, and the 2D Dirac model, are outlined. Evidences for the universal critical behavior of the localization length are summarized. A short review of the supersymmetric critical field theory is provided. The interplay between edge states and bulk localization properties is investigated. For a system with finite width and with short-range randomness, a sudden breakdown of the two-point conductance from $ne^{2}/h$ to 0 ($n$ integer) is predicted if the localization length exceeds the distance between the edges.

The Anderson transition due to random spin-orbit coupling in two-dimension

We report an analysis of the Anderson transition in an SU(2) model with chiral symmetry. Clear single parameter scaling behaviour is observed. We estimate the critical exponent for the divergence of the localization length to be $ν=2.72\pm.02$ indicating that the transition belongs to the symplectic universality class.

The chiral symplectic universality class

We report a numerical investigation of localization in the SU(2) model without diagonal disorder. At the band center, chiral symmetry plays an important role. Our results indicate that states at the band center are critical. States away from the band center but not too close to the edge of the spectrum are metallic as expected for Hamiltonians with symplectic symmetry.

Scaling of the conductance distribution near the Anderson transition

The single parameter scaling hypothesis is the foundation of our understanding of the Anderson transition. However, the conductance of a disordered system is a fluctuating quantity which does not obey a one parameter scaling law. It is essential to investigate the scaling of the full conductance distribution to establish the scaling hypothesis. We present a clear cut numerical demonstration that the conductance distribution indeed obeys one parameter scaling near the Anderson transition.

The Anderson Transition in Two-Dimensional Systems with Spin-Orbit Coupling

We report a numerical investigation of the Anderson transition in two-dimensional systems with spin-orbit coupling. An accurate estimate of the critical exponent $ν$ for the divergence of the localization length in this universality class has to our knowledge not been reported in the literature. Here we analyse the SU(2) model. We find that for this model corrections to scaling due to irrelevant scaling variables may be neglected permitting an accurate estimate of the exponent $ν=2.73 \pm 0.02$.

Reply to Suslov

In a recent submission to this archive arXiv:cond-mat/0105325, Suslov has claimed that our recent numerical estimate of the critical exponent of the Anderson transition $ν=1.57\pm.02$ is in error and that the available numerical data are consistent with a value of $ν=1$. We contest this claim and demonstrate using Suslov's own scaling procedure that $ν\ne 1$

Reconciling Conductance Fluctuations and the Scaling Theory of Localization

We reconcile the phenomenon of mesoscopic conductance fluctuations with the single parameter scaling theory of the Anderson transition. We calculate three averages of the conductance distribution: $\exp(<\ln g>)$, $ $ and $1/ $ where $g$ is the conductance in units of $e^2/h$ and $R=1/g$ is the resistance and demonstrate that these quantities obey single parameter scaling laws. We obtain consistent estimates of the critical exponent from the scaling of all these quantities.
