Graviton Loop Corrections to Vacuum Polarization in de Sitter in a General Covariant Gauge

We evaluate the one-graviton loop contribution to the vacuum polarization on de Sitter background in a 1-parameter family of exact, de Sitter invariant gauges. Our result is computed using dimensional regularization and fully renormalized with BPHZ counterterms, which must include a noninvariant owing to the time-ordered interactions. Because the graviton propagator engenders a physical breaking of de Sitter invariance two structure functions are needed to express the result. In addition to its relevance for the gauge issue this is the first time a covariant gauge graviton propagator has been used to compute a noncoincident loop. A number of identities are derived which should facilitate further graviton loop computations.

Late time solution for interacting scalar in accelerating spaces

We consider stochastic inflation in an interacting scalar field in spatially homogeneous accelerating space-times with a constant principal slow roll parameter $ε$. We show that, if the scalar potential is scale invariant (which is the case when scalar contains quartic self-interaction and couples non-minimally to gravity), the late-time solution on accelerating FLRW spaces can be described by a probability distribution function (PDF) $ρ$ which is a function of $φ/H$ only, where $φ=φ(\vec x)$ is the scalar field and $H=H(t)$ denotes the Hubble parameter. We give explicit late-time solutions for $ρ\rightarrow ρ_\infty(φ/H)$, and thereby find the order $ε$ corrections to the Starobinsky-Yokoyama result. This PDF can then be used to calculate e.g. various $n-$point functions of the (self-interacting) scalar field, which are valid at late times in arbitrary accelerating space-times with $ε=$ constant.

Inflation from cosmological constant and nonminimally coupled scalar

We consider inflation in a universe with a positive cosmological constant and a nonminimally coupled scalar field, in which the field couples both quadratically and quartically to the Ricci scalar. When considered in the Einstein frame and when the nonminimal couplings are negative, the field starts in slow roll and inflation ends with an asymptotic value of the principal slow roll parameter, $ε_E=4/3$. Graceful exit can be achieved by suitably (tightly) coupling the scalar field to matter, such that at late time the total energy density reaches the scaling of matter, $ε_E=ε_m$. Quite generically the model produces a red spectrum of scalar cosmological perturbations and a small amount of gravitational radiation. With a suitable choice of the nonminimal couplings, the spectral slope can be as large as $n_s\simeq 0.955$, which is about one standard deviation away from the central value measured by the Planck satellite. The model can be ruled out by future measurements if any of the following is observed: (a) the spectral index of scalar perturbations is $n_s>0.960$; (b) the amplitude of tensor perturbations is above about $r\sim 10^{-2}$; (c) the running of the spectral index of scalar perturbations is positive.

Nonminimal coupling and the cosmological constant problem

We consider a universe with a positive effective cosmological constant and a nonminimally coupled scalar field. When the coupling constant is negative, the scalar field exhibits linear growth at asymptotically late times, resulting in a decaying effective cosmological constant. The Hubble rate in the Jordan frame reaches a self-similar solution, $H=1/(εt)$, where the principal slow roll parameter $ε$ depends on $ξ$, reaching maximally $ε=2$ (radiation era scaling) in the limit when $ξ\rightarrow -\infty$. Similar results are found in the Einstein frame (E), with $H_E=1/(ε_E t)$, but now $ε_E \rightarrow 4/3$ as $ξ\rightarrow -\infty$. Therefore in the presence of a nonminimally coupled scalar de Sitter is not any more an attractor, but instead (when $ξ<-1/2$) the Universe settles in a decelerating phase. Next we show that, when the scalar field $ϕ$ decays to matter with $ε_m>4/3$ at a rate $Γ\gg H$, the scaling changes to that of matter, $ε\rightarrow ε_m$, and the energy density in the effective cosmological becomes a fixed fraction of the matter energy density, $M_{\rm P}^2Λ_{E\rm eff}/ρ_m={\rm constant}$, exhibiting thus an attractor behavior. While this may solve the (old) cosmological constant problem, it does not explain dark energy. Provided one accepts tuning at the $1\%$ level, the vacuum energy of neutrinos can explain the observed dark energy.

Representing the Graviton Self-Energy on de Sitter Background

We derive a noncovariant but simple representation for the self-energy of a conformally transformed graviton field on the cosmological patch of de Sitter. Our representation involves four structure functions, as opposed to the two that would be necessary for a manifestly de Sitter invariant representation. We work out what the four structure functions are for the one loop correction due to a massless, minimally coupled scalar. And we employ the result to work out what happens to dynamical gravitons.

Naturalness in Higgs inflation in a frame independent formalism

We make use of the frame and gauge independent formalism for scalar and tensor cosmological perturbations developed in Ref. [1] to show that the physical cutoff for 2-to-2 tree level scatterings in Higgs inflation is above the Planck scale M_P throughout inflation. More precisely, we found that in the Jordan frame, the physical cutoff scale is $(Λ/a)_J \gtrsim \sqrt{M_P^2+ξϕ^2}$, while in the Einstein frame it is $(Λ/a)_J \gtrsim M_P$, where $ξ$ is the nonminimal coupling and $ϕ$ denotes the Higgs vev during inflation. The dimensionless ratio of the physical cutoff to the relevant Planck scale is equal to one in both frames, thus demonstrating the physical equivalence of the two frames. Our analysis implies that Higgs inflation is unitary up to the Planck scale, and hence there is no naturalness problem in Higgs inflation. In this paper we only consider the graviton and scalar interactions.

A photon propagator on de Sitter in covariant gauges

We construct a de Sitter invariant photon propagator in general covariant gauges. Our result is a natural generalization of the Allen-Jacobson photon propagator in Feynman gauge. Our propagator reproduces the correct response to a point static charge and the one-loop electromagnetic stress-energy tensor, strongly suggesting that it is suitable for perturbative calculations on de Sitter.

Antiscreening in perturbative quantum gravity and resolving the Newtonian singularity

We calculate the quantum corrections to the Newtonian potential induced by a massless, nonminimally coupled scalar field on Minkowski background. We make use of the graviton vacuum polarization calculated in our previous work and solve the equation of motion nonperturbatively. When written as the quantum-corrected gauge invariant Bardeen potentials, our results show that quantum effects generically antiscreen the Newtonian singularity 1/r. This result supports the point of view that gravity on (super-)Planckian scales is an asymptotically safe theory. In addition, we show that, in the presence of quantum fluctuations of a massless, (non)minimally coupled scalar field, dynamical gravitons propagate superluminally. The effect is, however, unbservably small and it is hence of academic interest only.

Backreaction of a massless minimally coupled scalar field from inflationary quantum fluctuations

In this paper we study a massless, minimally coupled scalar field in a FLRW spacetime with periods of different constant deceleration parameter. We assume the Bunch-Davies vacuum during inflation and then use a sudden matching approximation to match it onto radiation era and subsequently onto matter era. We then proceed to calculate the one-loop energy-momentum tensor from the inflationary quantum vacuum fluctuations in different eras. The energy-momentum tensor has the form of an ideal (quantum) fluid, characterized by an equation of state. When compared with the background, far away from the matching the quantum energy density in radiation era exhibits a contribution that grows logarithmically with the scale factor. In matter era the ratio of the quantum to classical fluid settles eventually to a tiny constant, (rho_q) / (rho) = 10^(-13) for a grand unified scale inflation. Curiously, the late time scaling of quantum fluctuations suggests that they contribute a little to the dark matter of the Universe, provided that it clusters as cold dark matter, which needs to be checked.

Frame independent cosmological perturbations

We compute the third order gauge invariant action for scalar-graviton interactions in the Jordan frame. We demonstrate that the gauge invariant action for scalar and tensor perturbations on one physical hypersurface only differs from that on another physical hypersurface via terms proportional to the equation of motion and boundary terms, such that the evolution of non-Gaussianity may be called unique. Moreover, we demonstrate that the gauge invariant curvature perturbation and graviton on uniform field hypersurfaces in the Jordan frame are equal to their counterparts in the Einstein frame. These frame independent perturbations are therefore particularly useful in relating results in different frames at the perturbative level. On the other hand, the field perturbation and graviton on uniform curvature hypersurfaces in the Jordan and Einstein frame are non-linearly related, as are their corresponding actions and $n$-point functions.

Symmetry breaking in de Sitter: a stochastic effective theory approach

We consider phase transitions on (eternal) de Sitter in an O(N) symmetric scalar field theory. Making use of Starobinsky's stochastic inflation we prove that deep infrared scalar modes cannot form a condensate -- and hence they see an effective potential that allows no phase transition. We show that by proving convexity of the effective potential that governs deep infrared field fluctuations both at the origin as well as at arbitrary values of the field. Next, we present numerical plots of the scalar field probability distribution function (PDF) and the corresponding effective potential for several values of the coupling constant at the asymptotic future timelike infinity of de Sitter. For small field values the effective potential has an approximately quadratic form, corresponding to a positive mass term, such that the corresponding PDF is approximately Gaussian. However, the curvature of the effective potential shows qualitatively different (typically much softer) behavior on the coupling constant than that implied by the Starobinsky-Yokoyama procedure. For large field values, the effective potential as expected reduces to the tree level potential plus a positive correction that only weakly (logarithmically) depends on the background field. Finally, we calculate the backreaction of fluctuations on the background geometry and show that it is positive.

Symmetry breaking and the Goldstone theorem in de Sitter space

We consider an O(N) symmetric scalar field model in the mean field (Hartree) approximation and show that the symmetry can be broken in de Sitter space. We find that the phase transition can be of first order, and that its strength depends non-analytically on the parameters of the model. We also show that the would-be Goldstone bosons acquire a mass, effectively becoming pseudo-Goldstone bosons, thus breaking the O(N) symmetry. Our results imply that topological defects can form during inflation.

An exact solution of the Dirac equation with CP violation

We consider Yukawa theory in which the fermion mass is induced by a Higgs like scalar. In our model the fermion mass exhibits a temporal dependence, which naturally occurs in the early Universe setting. Assuming that the complex fermion mass changes as a tanh-kink, we construct an exact, helicity conserving, CP-violating solution for the positive and negative frequency fermionic mode functions, which is valid both in the case of weak and strong CP violation. Using this solution we then study the fermionic currents both in the initial vacuum and finite density/temperature setting. Our result shows that, due to a potentially large state squeezing, fermionic currents can exhibit a large oscillatory magnification. Having in mind applications to electroweak baryogenesis, we then compare our exact results with those obtained in a gradient approximation. Even though the gradient approximation does not capture the oscillatory effects of squeezing, it describes quite well the averaged current, obtained by performing a mode sum. Our main conclusion is: while the agreement with the semiclassical force is quite good in the thick wall regime, the difference is sufficiently significant to motivate a more detailed quantitative study of baryogenesis sources in the thin wall regime in more realistic settings.

The Gaussian entropy of fermionic systems

We consider the entropy and decoherence in fermionic quantum systems. By making a Gaussian Ansatz for the density operator of a collection of fermions we study statistical 2-point correlators and express the entropy of a system fermion in terms of these correlators. In a simple case when a set of N thermalised environmental fermionic oscillators interacts bi-linearly with the system fermion we can study its time dependent entropy, which also represents a quantitative measure for decoherence. We then consider a relativistic fermionic quantum field theory and take a mass mixing term as a simple model for the Yukawa interaction. It turns out that even in this Gaussian approximation, the fermionic system decoheres quite effectively, such that in a large coupling and high temperature regime the system field approaches the temperature of the environmental fields.

The Newtonian Limit of Hermitian Gravity

We construct the gauge invariant potentials of Hermitian Gravity and derive the linearized equations of motion they obey. A comparison reveals a striking similarity to the Bardeen potentials of general relativity. We then consider the response to a point particle source, and discuss in what sense the solutions of Hermitian Gravity reduce to the Newtonian potentials. In a rather intriguing way, the Hermitian Gravity solutions exhibit a generalized reciprocity symmetry originally proposed by Born in the 1930s. Finally, we consider the trajectories of massive and massless particles under the influence of a potential. The theory correctly reproduces the Newtonian limit in three dimensions and the nonrelativistic acceleration equation. However, it differs from the light deflection calculated in linearized generalrelativity by 25%. While the specific complexification of general relativity by extension to Hermitian spaces performed here does not agree with experiment, it does possess useful properties for quantization and is well-behaved around singularities. Another form of complex general relativity may very well agree with experimental data.

Uniqueness of the gauge invariant action for cosmological perturbations

In second order perturbation theory different definitions are known of gauge invariant perturbations in single field inflationary models. Consequently the corresponding gauge invariant cubic actions do not have the same form. Here we show that the cubic action for one choice of gauge invariant variables is unique in the following sense: the action for any other, non-linearly related variable can be brought to the same bulk action, plus additional boundary terms. These boundary terms correspond to the choice of hypersurface and generate extra, disconnected contributions to the bispectrum. We also discuss uniqueness of the action with respect to conformal frames. When expressed in terms of the gauge invariant curvature perturbation on uniform field hypersurfaces the action for cosmological perturbations has a unique form, independent of the original Einstein or Jordan frame. Crucial is that the gauge invariant comoving curvature perturbation is frame independent, which makes it extremely helpful in showing the quantum equivalence of the two frames, and therefore in calculating quantum effects in nonminimally coupled theories such as Higss inflation.

On decoherence of cosmological perturbations and stochastic inflation

By making a suitable generalization of the Starobinsky stochastic inflation, we propose a classical phase space formulation of stochastic inflation which may be used for a quantitative study of decoherence of cosmological perturbations during inflation. The precise knowledge of how much cosmological perturbations have decohered is essential to the understanding of acoustic oscillations of cosmological microwave background (CMB) photons. In order to show how the method works, we provide the relevant equations for a self-interacting inflaton field. For pedagogical reasons and to provide a link to the field theoretical case, we consider the quantum stochastic harmonic oscillator.

Decoherence and Dynamical Entropy Generation in Quantum Field Theory

We formulate a novel approach to decoherence based on neglecting observationally inaccessible correlators. We apply our formalism to a renormalised interacting quantum field theoretical model. Using out-of-equilibrium field theory techniques we show that the Gaussian von Neumann entropy for a pure quantum state increases to the interacting thermal entropy. This quantifies decoherence and thus measures how classical our pure state has become. The decoherence rate is equal to the single particle decay rate in our model. We also compare our approach to existing approaches to decoherence in a simple quantum mechanical model. We show that the entropy following from the perturbative master equation suffers from physically unacceptable secular growth.
