Time transients in the quantum corrected Newtonian potential induced by a massless nonminimally coupled scalar field

We calculate the one loop graviton vacuum polarization induced by a massless, nonminimally coupled scalar field on Minkowski background. We make use of the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism, which allows us to study time dependent phenomena. As an application we compute the leading quantum correction to the Newtonian potential of a point particle. The novel aspect of the calculation is the use of the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism, within which we calculate the time transients induced by switching on of the graviton-scalar coupling.

The Cosmological Constant and Lorentz Invariance of the Vacuum State

One hope to solve the cosmological constant problem is to identify a symmetry principle, based on which the cosmological constant can be reduced either to zero, or to a tiny value. Here, we note that requiring that the vacuum state is Lorentz invariant significantly reduces the theoretical value of the vacuum energy density. Hence, this also reduces the discrepancy between the observed value of the cosmological constant and its theoretical expectation, down from 123 orders of magnitude to 56 orders of magnitude. We find that, at one loop level, massless particles do not yield any contribution to the cosmological constant. Another important consequence of Lorentz symmetry is stabilization of the gravitational hierarchy: the cosmological constant (divided by Newton's constant) does not run as the quartic power of the renormalization group scale, but instead only logarithmically.

Negative Energy Cosmology and the Cosmological Constant

It is well known that string theories naturally compactify on anti-de Sitter spaces, and yet cosmological observations show no evidence of a negative cosmological constant in the early Universe's evolution. In this letter we present two simple nonlocal modifications of the standard Friedmann cosmology that can lead to observationally viable cosmologies with an initial (negative) cosmological constant. The nonlocal operators we include are toy models for the quantum cosmological backreaction. In Model I an initial quasiperiodic oscillatory epoch is followed by inflation and a late time matter era, representing a dark matter candidate. The backreaction in Model II quickly compensates the negative cosmological term such that the Ricci curvature scalar rapidly approaches zero, and the Universe ends up in a late time radiation era.

Scalar cosmological perturbations from inflationary black holes

We study the correction to the scale invariant power spectrum of a scalar field on de Sitter space from small black holes that formed during a pre-inflationary matter dominated era. The formation probability of such black holes is estimated from primordial Gaussian density fluctuations. We determine the correction to the spectrum by first deriving the Keldysh propagator for a massless scalar field on Schwarzschild-de Sitter space. Our results suggest that the effect is strong enough to be tested -- and possibly even ruled out -- by observations.

Decoherence in an Interacting Quantum Field Theory: Thermal Case

We study the decoherence of a renormalised quantum field theoretical system. We consider our novel correlator approach to decoherence where entropy is generated by neglecting observationally inaccessible correlators. Using out-of-equilibrium field theory techniques at finite temperatures, we show that the Gaussian von Neumann entropy for a pure quantum state asymptotes to the interacting thermal entropy. The decoherence rate can be well described by the single particle decay rate in our model. Connecting to electroweak baryogenesis scenarios, we moreover study the effects on the entropy of a changing mass of the system field. Finally, we compare our correlator approach to existing approaches to decoherence in the simple quantum mechanical analogue of our field theoretical model. The entropy following from the perturbative master equation suffers from physically unacceptable secular growth.

Decoherence in Quantum Mechanics

We study decoherence in a simple quantum mechanical model using two approaches. Firstly, we follow the conventional approach to decoherence where one is interested in solving the reduced density matrix from the perturbative master equation. Secondly, we consider our novel correlator approach to decoherence where entropy is generated by neglecting observationally inaccessible correlators. We show that both methods can accurately predict decoherence time scales. However, the perturbative master equation generically suffers from instabilities which prevents us to reliably calculate the system's total entropy increase. We also discuss the relevance of the results in our quantum mechanical model for interacting field theories.

Path Integral for Inflationary Perturbations

The quantum theory of cosmological perturbations in single field inflation is formulated in terms of a path integral. Starting from a canonical formulation, we show how the free propagators can be obtained from the well known gauge-invariant quadratic action for scalar and tensor perturbations, and determine the interactions to arbitrary order. This approach does not require the explicit solution of the energy and momentum constraints, a novel feature which simplifies the determination of the interaction vertices. The constraints and the necessary imposition of gauge conditions is reflected in the appearance of various commuting and anti-commuting auxiliary fields in the action. These auxiliary fields are not propagating physical degrees of freedom but need to be included in internal lines and loops in a diagrammatic expansion. To illustrate the formalism we discuss the tree-level 3-point and 4-point functions of the inflaton perturbations, reproducing the results already obtained by the methods used in the current literature. Loop calculations are left for future work.

Gauge invariant cosmological perturbations for the nonminimally coupled inflaton field

We construct the gauge invariant free action for cosmological perturbations for the nonminimally coupled inflaton field in the Jordan frame. For this the phase space formalism is used, which keeps track of all the dynamical and constraint fields. We perform explicit conformal transformations to demonstrate the physical equivalence between the Jordan and Einstein frames at the level of quadratic perturbations. We show how to generalize the formalism to the case of a more complicated scalar sector with an internal symmetry, such as Higgs inflation. This work represents a first step in developing gauge invariant perturbation theory for nonminimally coupled inflationary models.

Quantum backreaction in evolving FLRW spacetimes

Quantum fluctuations of a nonminimally coupled scalar field in D-dimensional homogeneous and isotropic background are calculated within the operator formalism in curved models with time evolutions of the scale factor that allow smooth transitions between contracting and expanding and between decelerating and accelerating regimes. The coincident propagator is derived and used to compute the one-loop backreaction from the scalar field. The inflationary infrared divergences are absent in Bunch-Davies vacuum when taking into account a preceding cosmological era or spatial curvature which can be either positive or negative. It is found that asymptotically, the backreaction energy density in the minimally coupled case grows logarithmically with the scale factor in quasi-de Sitter space, and in a class of models decays in slow-roll inflation and grows as a power-law during super-inflation. The backreaction increases generically in a contracting phase or in the presence of a negative nonminimal coupling. The effects of the coupling and renormalization scale upon the quantum fluctuations together with the novel features due to nontrivial time evolution and spatial curvature are clarified with exact solutions and numerical examples.

Decoherence in an Interacting Quantum Field Theory: The Vacuum Case

We apply the decoherence formalism to an interacting scalar field theory. In the spirit of the decoherence literature, we consider a "system field" and an "environment field" that interact via a cubic coupling. We solve for the propagator of the system field, where we include the self-energy corrections due to the interaction with the environment field. In this paper, we consider an environment in the vacuum state (T=0). We show that neglecting inaccessible non-Gaussian correlators increases the entropy of the system as perceived by the observer. Moreover, we consider the effect of a changing mass of the system field in the adiabatic regime, and we find that at late times no additional entropy has been generated.

Entropy and Correlators in Quantum Field Theory

It is well known that loss of information about a system, for some observer, leads to an increase in entropy as perceived by this observer. We use this to propose an alternative approach to decoherence in quantum field theory in which the machinery of renormalisation can systematically be implemented: neglecting observationally inaccessible correlators will give rise to an increase in entropy of the system. As an example we calculate the entropy of a general Gaussian state and, assuming the observer's ability to probe this information experimentally, we also calculate the correction to the Gaussian entropy for two specific non-Gaussian states.

The graviton one-loop effective action in cosmological space-times with constant deceleration

We consider the quantum Friedmann equations which include one-loop vacuum fluctuations due to gravitons and scalar field matter in a FLRW background with constant $ε=-{\dot{H}}/{H^2}$. After several field redefinitions, to remove the mixing between the gravitational and matter degrees of freedom, we can construct the one loop correction to the Friedmann equations. Due to cosmological particle creation, the propagators needed in such a calculation are typically infrared divergent. In this paper we construct the graviton and matter propagators, making use of the recent construction of the infrared finite scalar propagators calculated on a compact spatial manifold in \cite{Janssen:2008px}. The resulting correction to the Friedman equations is suppressed with respect to the tree level contribution by a factor of $H^2/m_p^2$ and shows no secular growth.

Fermion Propagator in Cosmological Spaces with Constant Deceleration

We calculate the fermion propagator in FLRW spacetimes with constant deceleration $q=ε-1$, $ε=-\dot{H}/H^{2}$ for excited states. For fermions whose mass is generated by a scalar field through a Yukawa coupling $m=g_{\mathrm{\scriptscriptstyle{Y}}} ϕ$, we assume $ϕ\propto H$. We first solve for the mode functions by splitting the spinor into a direct product of helicity and chirality spinors. We also allow for non-vacuum states. We normalise the spinors using a consistent canonical quantisation and by requiring orthogonality of particle and anti-particle spinors. We apply our propagator to calculate the one loop effective action and renormalise using dimensional regularisation. Since the Hubble parameter is now treated dynamically, this paves the way to study the dynamical backreaction of fermions on the background spacetime.

Effect of the Trace Anomaly on the Cosmological Constant

It has been argued that the quantum (conformal) trace anomaly could potentially provide us with a dynamical explanation of the cosmological constant problem. In this paper, however, we show by means of a semiclassical analysis that the trace anomaly does not affect the cosmological constant. We construct the effective action of the conformal anomaly for flat FLRW spacetimes consisting of local quadratic geometric curvature invariants. Counterterms are thus expected to influence the numerical value of the coefficients in the trace anomaly and we must therefore allow these parameters to vary. We calculate the evolution of the Hubble parameter in quasi de Sitter spacetime, where we restrict our Hubble parameter to vary slowly in time, and in FLRW spacetimes. We show dynamically that a Universe consisting of matter with a constant equation of state, a cosmological constant and the quantum trace anomaly evolves either to the classical de Sitter attractor or to a quantum trace anomaly driven one. When considering the trace anomaly truncated to quasi de Sitter spacetime, we find a region in parameter space where the quantum attractor destabilises. When considering the exact expression of the trace anomaly, a stability analysis shows that whenever the trace anomaly driven attractor is stable, the classical de Sitter attractor is unstable, and vice versa. Semiclassically, the trace anomaly does not affect the classical late time de Sitter attractor and hence it does not solve the cosmological constant problem.

Graviton one-loop effective action and inflationary dynamics

We consider the one-loop effective action due to gravitons in a FLRW background with constant epsilon=-(dH/dt)/H^2. By expanding around epsilon=0 (corresponding to an expansion around de Sitter space), we can study how the deviation from de Sitter space effects the quantum corrected Friedmann equations. We find that, at zeroth order in epsilon, one-loop effects induce only a finite shift in the coupling constants. At linear order in epsilon there is however a divergent contribution to the equations of motion. This contribution leads to a nontrivial term in the renormalized equations that depends logarithmically on H and thus cannot be absorbed in local counterterms. We find that deviations due to this term are unobservably small. Our study shows that quantum effects in quasi de Sitter space can be fundamentally different then in de Sitter space, albeit in the case under consideration the effect is unobservably small.

The Scalar Field Kernel in Cosmological Spaces

We construct the quantum mechanical evolution operator in the Functional Schrodinger picture - the kernel - for a scalar field in spatially homogeneous FLRW spacetimes when the field is a) free and b) coupled to a spacetime dependent source term. The essential element in the construction is the causal propagator, linked to the commutator of two Heisenberg picture scalar fields. We show that the kernels can be expressed solely in terms of the causal propagator and derivatives of the causal propagator. Furthermore, we show that our kernel reveals the standard light cone structure in FLRW spacetimes. We finally apply the result to Minkowski spacetime, to de Sitter spacetime and calculate the forward time evolution of the vacuum in a general FLRW spacetime.

Resolving Curvature Singularities in Holomorphic Gravity

We formulate holomorphic theory of gravity and study how the holomorphy symmetry alters the two most important singular solutions of general relativity: black holes and cosmology. We show that typical observers (freely) falling into a holomorphic black hole do not encounter a curvature singularity. Likewise, typical observers do not experience Big Bang singularity. Unlike Hermitian gravity \cite{MantzHermitianGravity}, Holomorphic gravity does not respect the reciprocity symmetry and thus it is mainly a toy model for a gravity theory formulated on complex space-times. Yet it is a model that deserves a closer investigation since in many aspects it resembles Hermitian gravity and yet calculations are simpler. We have indications that holomorphic gravity reduces to the laws of general relativity correctly at large distance scales.

Hermitian Gravity and Cosmology

In an attempt to generalize general relativity, we propose a new Hermitian theory of gravity. Space-time is generalized to space-time-momentum-energy and both the principles of general covariance and equivalence are extended. The theory is endowed with a Hermitian metric on a complex manifold. The Hermitian metric contains, apart from the symmetric metric, an anti-symmetric part, which describes dynamical torsion. The causality structure is changed in a way such that there is a minimal time for events to be in causal contact and a maximal radius for a non-local instantaneous causally related volume. The speed of light can exceed the conventional speed of light in non-inertial frames and accelerations are bounded. We have indications that the theory of Hermitian gravity yields general relativity at large scales and a theory equivalent to general relativity at very small scales, where the momenta and energies are very large. As an example, we study cosmology in Hermitian gravity, where matter is described by two scalar fields. While at late times Hermitian gravity reproduces the standard cosmological FLRW models, at early times it differs significantly: quite generically the Universe of Hermitian cosmology exhibits a bounce where a maximal expansion rate (Ricci curvature) is attained. Moreover, we prove that no cosmological constant is permitted at the classical level within our model of Hermitian cosmology.
