Lindbladian PT phase transitions

A parity-time (PT) transition is a spectral transition characteristic of non-Hermitian generators; it typically occurs at an exceptional point, where multiple eigenvectors coalesce. The concept of a PT transition has been extended to Markovian open quantum systems, which are described by the GKSL equation. Interestingly, the PT transition in many-body Markovian open quantum systems, the so-called \textit{Lindbladian PT (L-PT) phase transition}, is closely related to two classes of exotic nonequilibrium many-body phenomena: \textit{continuous-time crystals} and \textit{non-reciprocal phase transitions}. In this review, we describe the recent advances in the study of L-PT phase transitions. First, we define PT symmetry in three distinct contexts: non-Hermitian systems, nonlinear dynamical systems, and Markovian open quantum systems, highlighting the interconnections between these frameworks. Second, we develop mean-field theories of L-PT phase transitions for collective-spin systems and for bipartite bosonic systems with particle-number conservation. Within these classes of models, we show that L-PT symmetry can induce a breaking of continuous time-translation symmetry down to a discrete one, leading to persistent periodic dynamics. We further demonstrate that the L-PT phase transition point is typically \textit{a critical exceptional point}, where multiple collective excitation modes with zero excitation spectrum coalesce. These findings establish an explicit connection to continuous-time crystals and non-reciprocal phase transitions. Third, going beyond the mean-field theory, we analyze statistical and quantum properties, such as purity and quantum entanglement indicators of time-independent steady states for several specific models with the L-PT symmetry. Finally, we discuss future research directions for L-PT phase transitions.

Continuous time crystals as a PT symmetric state and the emergence of critical exceptional points

Continuous time-translation symmetry is often spontaneously broken in open quantum systems, and the condition for their emergence has been actively investigated. However, there are only a few cases in which its condition for appearance has been fully elucidated. In this Letter, we show that a Lindbladian parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry can generically produce persistent periodic oscillations in a wide class of systems. This includes one-collective spin models, which have been studied thoroughly in the context of dissipative continuous time crystals, and spatially extended bipartite bosonic systems with conserved particle number. Interestingly, the periodic orbits in the PT-symmetric phase are found to be center-type, implying an initial state dependence. These results are established by proving that the Lindbladian $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry at the microscopic level implies a nonlinear PT symmetry, and by performing a linear stability analysis near the transition point. This research will further our understanding of novel non-equilibrium phases of matter and phase transitions with spontaneous anti-unitary symmetry breaking.

Relationships between two linearizations of the box-ball system : Kerov-Kirillov-Reshetikhin bijection and slot configuration

The box-ball system (BBS), which was introduced by Takahashi and Satsuma in 1990, is a soliton cellular automaton. Its dynamics can be linearized by a few methods, among which the best known is the Kerov-Kirillov-Reshetikhin (KKR) bijection using rigged partitions. Recently a new linearization method in terms of "slot configurations" was introduced by Ferrari-Nguyen-Rolla-Wang, but its relations to existing ones have not been clarified. In this paper we investigate this issue and clarify the relation between the two linearizations. For this we introduce a novel way of describing the BBS dynamics using a carrier with seat numbers. We show that the seat number configuration also linearizes the BBS and reveals explicit relations between the KKR bijection and the slot configuration. In addition, by using these explicit relations, we also show that even in case of finite carrier capacity the BBS can be linearized via the slot configuration.

Non-stationary current fluctuations in 1D boundary-driven diffusive systems via Macroscopic Fluctuation Theory

While Macroscopic Fluctuation Theory (MFT) has been highly successful in analyzing non-equilibrium steady states, its application to non-steady-state processes remains limited. In this study, we apply MFT to the relaxation process of one-dimensional boundary-driven diffusive systems coupled to particle reservoirs at both ends. We exactly derive the current variance for systems with a constant diffusion coefficient and arbitrary mobility, as well as the cumulant generating function for the current in Reflective Brownian Motion (RBM). Our results demonstrate that non-steady current fluctuations during the approach to a steady state can be quantitatively described within the MFT framework.

Skew column RSK dynamics and the box-ball system

The Fomin local rules for Schensted column insertion can be seen as a two-lane box-ball system, in which a carrier moves particles forward or laterally. Running such two-lane dynamics in parallel on a periodic lattice gives rise to a two-dimensional generalization of the box-ball system, which we call the \emph{skew column RSK dynamics}. Equivalently, this is a deterministic dynamics on pairs of skew semistandard Young tableaux $(P_t,Q_t)_{t \in \mathbb{Z}}$. We prove that this dynamics exhibits solitonic behavior and construct an explicit bijection $(P,Q) \leftrightarrow (H_1,H_2,κ,ν)$ that linearizes the time evolution. The resulting coordinates consist of two horizontally weak tableaux $H_1,H_2$ recording the asymptotic soliton data, integer riggings $κ$, and a weakly decreasing sequence of integers $ν$. A key feature of the construction is an explicit projection from the skew column RSK dynamics to the classical box-ball system; under this projection, the rigging $κ$ is precisely the Kerov--Kirillov--Reshetikhin rigging of the associated box-ball configuration. Our proof uses two commuting affine crystal structures on pairs of skew tableaux and a novel connectivity theorem for distinguished subgraphs of tensor products of Kirillov--Reshetikhin crystals. We also derive Greene-type formulas for the soliton lengths in terms of last-passage percolation on the associated cylindrical environment. Finally, by taking generating functions in the linearizing coordinates, we obtain bijective proofs of Cauchy and Kawanaka--Littlewood-type identities for transformed Hall--Littlewood polynomials.

Integral formula for the propagator of the one-dimensional Hubbard model

We present an exact integral formula for the multi-particle propagator of the one-dimensional Fermi--Hubbard model on an infinite lattice. The proof is based on the nested Bethe ansatz without relying on the string hypothesis. Our formula enables an explicit integral representation of the time evolution of arbitrary finite-particle wave functions and thereby provides a foundation for the exact analysis of nonequilibrium dynamics in the Hubbard model. It can further be applied to related open quantum models.

Exact Current Fluctuations in a Tight-Binding Chain with Dephasing Noise

The full counting statistics (FCS) of current has long provided fundamental insights into nonequilibrium systems. Recently, the FCS in quantum many-body systems has attracted growing attention, driven by rapid experimental progress in measuring current fluctuations. Nevertheless, for diffusive quantum many-body dynamics, the FCS of current has yet to be obtained exactly. In this Letter, we present the first exact solution for the FCS of current in a diffusive quantum many-body system, specifically a tight-binding chain with dephasing noise. By leveraging the system's SU(2) symmetry and a mapping to the one-dimensional Hubbard model, we derive an exact Fredholm determinant representation for the moment generating function of the time-integrated current. Our long-time asymptotic analysis shows that the cumulant generating function, and hence the corresponding large-deviation function, exhibit diffusive scaling for any nonzero dephasing. We compare our theoretical predictions with experimentally measured current variance and find consistent diffusive scaling.

Exact Anomalous Current Fluctuations in Quantum Many-Body Dynamics

Fluctuations of integrated currents have attracted considerable interest over the past decades in the context of statistical mechanics. Recently, anomalous current fluctuations, characterized by the M-Wright function, were obtained exactly in a classical automaton [$Ž$. Krajnik et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 160601 (2022)], and previous studies have shown that the anomalous behavior can arise in a variety of classical systems. Despite the rapidly growing interest in such anomalous behaviors, which capture a universal aspect of one-dimensional many-body transport, the exact derivation of the M-Wright function in quantum many-body systems has remained elusive. In this Letter, we present the first exact microscopic derivation of the M-Wright function in quantum many-body dynamics by analyzing the integrated spin current in a one-dimensional Fermi-Hubbard model with infinitely strong repulsive interactions. Our results lay the groundwork for exploring anomalous integrated currents in a broad class of quantum many-body systems.

Exact density profile in a tight-binding chain with dephasing noise

We theoretically investigate the many-body dynamics of a tight-binding chain with dephasing noise on the infinite interval. We obtain the exact solution of an average particle-density profile for the domain wall and the alternating initial conditions via the Bethe ansatz, analytically deriving the asymptotic expressions for the long time dynamics. For the domain wall initial condition, we obtain the scaling form of the average density, elucidating that the diffusive transport always emerges in the long time dynamics if the strength of the dephasing, no matter how small, is positive. For the alternating initial condition, our exact solution leads to the fact that the average density displays oscillatory decay or over-damped decay depending on the strength of the dissipation. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the asymptotic forms approach those of the symmetric simple exclusion process, identifying corrections from it.

Quantum Transport in Interacting Spin Chains: Exact Derivation of the GUE Tracy-Widom Distribution

We theoretically study quantum spin transport in a one-dimensional folded XXZ model with an alternating domain-wall initial state via the Bethe ansatz technique, exactly demonstrating that a probability distribution of finding a left-most up-spin with an appropriate scaling variable converges to the Tracy-Widom distribution for the Gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE), which is a universal distribution for the largest eigenvalue of GUE under a soft-edge scaling limit. Our finding presented here offers a first exact derivation of the GUE Tracy-Widom distribution in the dynamics of the interacting quantum model not being mapped to a noninteracting fermion Hamiltonian via the Jordan-Wigner transformation. On the basis of the exact solution of the folded XXZ model and our numerical analysis of the XXZ model, we discuss a universal behavior for the probability of finding the left-most up-spin in the XXZ model.

Exact Solution of Bipartite Fluctuations in One-Dimensional Fermions

Emergence of hydrodynamics in quantum many-body systems has recently garnered growing interest. The recent experiment of ultracold atoms [J. F. Wienand {\it et al.}, Nat. Phys. (2024), doi:10.1038/s41567-024-02611-z] studied emergent hydrodynamics in hard-core bosons using a bipartite fluctuation, which quantifies how the particle number fluctuates in a subsystem. In this Letter, we theoretically study the variance of a bipartite fluctuation in one-dimensional noninteracting fermionic dynamics starting from an alternating state, deriving the exact solution of the variance and its asymptotic linear growth law for the long-time dynamics. To compare the theoretical prediction with the experiment, we generalize our exact solution by incorporating the incompleteness of the initial alternating state, deriving the general linear growth law analytically. We find that it shows good agreement with the experimentally observed variance growth without any fitting parameters. Furthermore, we estimate a time scale for the local equilibration using our exact solution, finding that the time scale is independent of the initial incompleteness. To investigate the interaction effect, we implement numerical studies for the variance growth in interacting fermions, which has yet to be explored experimentally. As a result, we find that the presence of interactions breaks the linear variance growth derived in the noninteracting fermions. Our exact solutions and numerical findings here lay a foundation for growing bipartite fluctuations in quantum many-body dynamics.

Semi-infinite simple exclusion process: from current fluctuations to target survival

The symmetric simple exclusion process (SEP), where diffusive particles cannot overtake each other, is a paradigmatic model of transport in the single-file geometry. In this model, the study of currents has attracted a lot of attention, but so far most results are restricted to two geometries: (i) a finite system between two reservoirs, which does not conserve the number of particles but reaches a nonequilibrium steady state, and (ii) an infinite system which conserves the number of particles but never reaches a steady state. Here, we determine the full cumulant generating function of the integrated current in the important intermediate situation of a semi-infinite system connected to a reservoir, which does not conserve the number of particles and never reaches a steady state. This result is obtained thanks to the determination of the full spatial structure of the correlations which remarkably obey the very same closed equation recently obtained in the infinite geometry. Besides their intrinsic interest, these results allow us to solve two open problems: the survival probability of a fixed target in the SEP, and the statistics of the number of particles injected by a localized source.

Identity between Restricted Cauchy Sums for the $q$-Whittaker and Skew Schur Polynomials

The Cauchy identities play an important role in the theory of symmetric functions. It is known that Cauchy sums for the $q$-Whittaker and the skew Schur polynomials produce the same factorized expressions modulo a $q$-Pochhammer symbol. We consider the sums with restrictions on the length of the first rows for labels of both polynomials and prove an identity which relates them. The proof is based on techniques from integrable probability: we rewrite the identity in terms of two probability measures: the $q$-Whittaker measure and the periodic Schur measure. The relation follows by comparing their Fredholm determinant formulas.

Random Matrix Statistics in Propagating Correlation Fronts of Fermions

We theoretically study propagating correlation fronts in non-interacting fermions on a one-dimensional lattice starting from an alternating state, where the fermions occupy every other site. We find that, in the long-time asymptotic regime, all the moments of dynamical fluctuations around the correlation fronts are described by the universal correlation functions of Gaussian orthogonal and symplectic random matrices at the soft edge. Our finding here sheds light on a hitherto unknown connection between random matrix theory and correlation propagation in quantum dynamics.

Emergence of hydrodynamic spatial long-range correlations in nonequilibrium many-body systems

At large scales of space and time, the nonequilibrium dynamics of local observables in extensive many-body systems is well described by hydrodynamics. At the Euler scale, one assumes that each mesoscopic region independently reaches a state of maximal entropy under the constraints given by the available conservation laws. Away from phase transitions, maximal entropy states show exponential correlation decay, and independence of fluid cells might be assumed to subsist during the course of time evolution. We show that this picture is incorrect: under ballistic scaling, regions separated by macroscopic distances develop long-range correlations as time passes. These correlations take a universal form that only depends on the Euler hydrodynamics of the model. They are rooted in the large-scale motion of interacting fluid modes, and are the dominant long-range correlations developing in time from long-wavelength, entropy-maximised states. They require the presence of interaction and at least two different fluid modes, and are of a fundamentally different nature from well-known long-range correlations occurring from diffusive spreading or from quasi-particle excitations produced in far-from-equilibrium quenches. We provide a universal theoretical framework to exactly evaluate them, an adaptation of the macroscopic fluctuation theory to the Euler scale. We verify our exact predictions in the hard-rod gas, by comparing with numerical simulations and finding excellent agreement.

Exact solution for the Lindbladian dynamics for the open XX spin chain with boundary dissipation

We obtain exact formulas for the time-dependence of a few physical observables for the open XX spin chain with Lindbladian dynamics. Our analysis is based on the fact that the Lindblad equation for an arbitrary open quadratic system of $N$ fermions is explicitly solved in terms of diagonalization of a $4N\times4N$ matrix called structure matrix by following the scheme of the third quantization. We mainly focus on the time-dependence of magnetization and spin current. As a short-time behavior at a given site, we observe the plateau regime except near the center of the chain. Basic features of this are explained by the light-cone structure created by propagations of boundary effects from the initial time, but we can explain their more detailed properties analytically using our exact formulas. On the other hand, after the plateau regime, the magnetization and spin current exhibit a slow decay to the steady state values described by the Liouvillian gap. We analytically establish its $O(N^{-3})$ scaling and also determine its coefficient.

Dissipative time crystals originating from parity-time symmetry

This study aims to provide evidence regarding the emergence of a class of dissipative time crystals when $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry of the systems is restored in collective spin systems with Lindblad dynamics. First, we show that a standard model of boundary time crystals (BTCs) satisfies the Liouvillian $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry, and prove that BTC exists only when the stationary state is $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric in the large-spin limit. Also, a similar statement is confirmed numerically for another BTC model. In addition, the mechanism of the appearance of BTCs is discussed through the development of a perturbation theory for a class of the one-spin models under weak dissipations. Consequently, we show that BTCs appear in the first-order correction when the total gain and loss are balanced. These results strongly suggest that BTCs are time crystals originating from $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry.
