Dissipative time crystals originating from parity-time symmetry

This study aims to provide evidence regarding the emergence of a class of dissipative time crystals when $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry of the systems is restored in collective spin systems with Lindblad dynamics. First, we show that a standard model of boundary time crystals (BTCs) satisfies the Liouvillian $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry, and prove that BTC exists only when the stationary state is $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric in the large-spin limit. Also, a similar statement is confirmed numerically for another BTC model. In addition, the mechanism of the appearance of BTCs is discussed through the development of a perturbation theory for a class of the one-spin models under weak dissipations. Consequently, we show that BTCs appear in the first-order correction when the total gain and loss are balanced. These results strongly suggest that BTCs are time crystals originating from $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry.

Ballistic macroscopic fluctuation theory

We introduce a new universal framework describing fluctuations and correlations in quantum and classical many-body systems, at the Euler hydrodynamic scale of space and time. The framework adapts the ideas of the conventional macroscopic fluctuation theory (MFT) to systems that support ballistic transport. The resulting "ballistic MFT" (BMFT) is solely based on the Euler hydrodynamics data of the many-body system. Within this framework, mesoscopic observables are classical random variables depending only on the fluctuating conserved densities, and Euler-scale fluctuations are obtained by deterministically transporting thermodynamic fluctuations via the Euler hydrodynamics. Using the BMFT, we show that long-range correlations in space generically develop over time from long-wavelength inhomogeneous initial states in interacting models. This result, which we verify by numerical calculations, challenges the long-held paradigm that at the Euler scale, fluid cells may be considered uncorrelated. We also show that the Gallavotti-Cohen fluctuation theorem for non-equilibrium ballistic transport follows purely from time-reversal invariance of the Euler hydrodynamics. We check the validity of the BMFT by applying it to integrable systems, and in particular the hard-rod gas, with extensive simulations that confirm our analytical results.

Solvable models in the KPZ class: approach through periodic and free boundary Schur measures

We explore probabilistic consequences of correspondences between $q$-Whittaker measures and periodic and free boundary Schur measures established by the authors in the recent paper [arXiv:2106.11922]. The result is a comprehensive theory of solvability of stochastic models in the KPZ class where exact formulas descend from mapping to explicit determinantal and pfaffian point processes. We discover new variants of known results as determinantal formulas for the current distribution of the ASEP on the line and new results such as Fredholm pfaffian formulas for the distribution of the point-to-point partition function of the Log Gamma polymer model in half space. In the latter case, scaling limits and asymptotic analysis allow to establish Baik-Rains phase transition for height function of the KPZ equation on the half line at the origin.

$\mathcal{PT}$ phase transition in open quantum systems with Lindblad dynamics

We investigate parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) phase transitions in open quantum systems and discuss a criterion of Liouvillian $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry proposed recently by Huber \textit{et al}. [J. Huber \textit{et al}., SciPost Phys. $\textbf{9}$, 52 (2020)]. Using the third quantization, which is a general method to solve the Lindblad equation for open quadratic systems, we show, with a proposed criterion of $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry, that the eigenvalue structure of the Liouvillian clearly changes at the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking point for an open 2-spin model with exactly balanced gain and loss if the total spin is large. In particular, in a $\mathcal{PT}$ unbroken phase, some eigenvalues are pure imaginary numbers while in a $\mathcal{PT}$ broken phase, all the eigenvalues are real. From this result, it is analytically shown for an open quantum system including quantum jumps that the dynamics in the long time limit changes from an oscillatory to an overdamped behavior at the proposed $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking point. Furthermore, we show a direct relation between the criterion of Huber \textit{et al}. of Liouvillian $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry and the dynamics of the physical quantities for quadratic bosonic systems. Our results support the validity of the proposed criterion of Liouvillian $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry.

Exact solution of the macroscopic fluctuation theory for the symmetric exclusion process

We present the first exact solution for the time dependent equations of the macroscopic fluctuation theory (MFT) for the symmetric simple exclusion process by combining a generalization of the canonical Cole-Hopf transformation with the inverse scattering method. For the step initial condition with two densities, the associated Riemann-Hilbert problem is solved to determine exactly the optimal density profile and the response field which produce a required fluctuation, both at initial and final times. The large deviation function of the current is derived and coincides with the formula obtained previously by microscopic calculations. This provides the first analytic confirmation of the validity of the MFT for an interacting model in the time dependent regime.

Skew RSK dynamics: Greene invariants, affine crystals and applications to $q$-Whittaker polynomials

Iterating the skew RSK correspondence discovered by Sagan and Stanley in the late '80s, we define a deterministic dynamics on the space of pairs of skew Young tableaux $(P,Q)$. We find that this skew RSK dynamics displays conservation laws which, in the picture of Viennot's shadow line construction, identify generalizations of Greene invariants. The introduction of a novel realization of $0$-th Kashiwara operators reveals that the skew RSK dynamics possesses symmetries induced by an affine bicrystal structure, which, combined with connectedness properties of Demazure crystals, leads to its linearization. Studying asymptotic evolution of the dynamics started from a pair of skew tableaux $(P,Q)$, we discover a new bijection $Υ: (P,Q) \mapsto (V,W; κ, ν)$. Here $(V,W)$ is a pair of vertically strict tableaux, i.e., column strict filling of Young diagrams with no condition on rows, with shape prescribed by the Greene invariant, $κ$ is an array of non-negative weights and $ν$ is a partition. An application of this construction is the first bijective proof of Cauchy and Littlewood identities involving $q$-Whittaker polynomials. New identities relating sums of $q$-Whittaker and Schur polynomials are also presented.

Limiting current distribution for a two species asymmetric exclusion process

We study current fluctuations of a two-species asymmetric exclusion process, known as the Arndt-Heinzel-Rittenberg model. For a step-Bernoulli initial condition with finite number of particles, we provide an explicit multiple integral expression for a certain joint current probability distribution. By performing an asymptotic analysis we prove that the joint current distribution is given by a product of a Gaussian and a GUE Tracy-Widom distribution in the long time limit, as predicted by non-linear fluctuating hydrodynamics.

Dynamics of Open Tight-binding Model

In this paper, we investigate the open tight-binding model with $N$ sites coupled to two reservoirs on its edges with the nonequilibrium Green function method to understand effects of open boundaries. As a result, we obtain an analytical expression of the electron density in the steady state and in the transient regime for $N \rightarrow \infty$ and at absolute zero temperature. From the expression of the electron density in the steady state, we show that the open boundaries do not affect the qualitative behavior of the electron density and the phase transition which has been observed for the isolated tight-binding model also exists in our open case. Using the expression of the time-dependent electron density, we show that a two-step decay appears in the relaxation process purely caused by open boundaries. In addition, we show that the dependence of speed of convergence on boundary coupling strength qualitatively changes at a certain value of the boundary parameters. This is a result of special eigenvalues of a non-hermitian matrix whose imaginary parts do not vanish even in the limit $N \rightarrow \infty$.

Stationary Higher Spin Six Vertex Model and $q$-Whittaker measure

In this paper we consider the Higher Spin Six Vertex Model on the lattice $\mathbb{Z}_{\geq 2} \times \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 1}$. We first identify a family of translation invariant measures and subsequently we study the one point distribution of the height function for the model with certain random boundary conditions. Exact formulas we obtain prove to be useful in order to establish the asymptotic of the height distribution in the long space-time limit for the stationary Higher Spin Six Vertex Model. In particular, along the characteristic line we recover Baik-Rains fluctuations with size of characteristic exponent $1/3$. We also consider some of the main degenerations of the Higher Spin Six Vertex Model and we adapt our analysis to the relevant cases of the $q$-Hahn particle process and of the Exponential Jump Model.

Spectral theory for interacting particle systems solvable by coordinate Bethe ansatz

We develop spectral theory for the q-Hahn stochastic particle system introduced recently by Povolotsky. That is, we establish a Plancherel type isomorphism result which implies completeness and biorthogonality statements for the Bethe ansatz eigenfunctions of the system. Owing to a Markov duality with the q-Hahn TASEP (a discrete-time generalization of TASEP with particles' jump distribution being the orthogonality weight for the classical q-Hahn orthogonal polynomials), we write down moment formulas which characterize the fixed time distribution of the q-Hahn TASEP with general initial data. The Bethe ansatz eigenfunctions of the q-Hahn system degenerate into eigenfunctions of other (not necessarily stochastic) interacting particle systems solvable by the coordinate Bethe ansatz. This includes the ASEP, the (asymmetric) six-vertex model, and the Heisenberg XXZ spin chain (all models are on the infinite lattice). In this way, each of the latter systems possesses a spectral theory, too. In particular, biorthogonality of the ASEP eigenfunctions which follows from the corresponding q-Hahn statement implies symmetrization identities of Tracy and Widom (for ASEP with either step or step Bernoulli initial configuration) as corollaries. Another degeneration takes the q-Hahn system to the q-Boson particle system (dual to q-TASEP) studied in detail in our previous paper (2013). Thus, at the spectral theory level we unify two discrete-space regularizations of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation / stochastic heat equation, namely, q-TASEP and ASEP.

Distribution of a tagged particle position in the one-dimensional symmetric simple exclusion process with two-sided Bernoulli initial condition

For the two-sided Bernoulli initial condition with density $ρ_-$ (resp. $ρ_+$) to the left (resp. to the right), we study the distribution of a tagged particle in the one dimensional symmetric simple exclusion process. We obtain a formula for the moment generating function of the associated current in terms of a Fredholm determinant. Our arguments are based on a combination of techniques from integrable probability which have been developed recently for studying the asymmetric exclusion process and a subsequent intricate symmetric limit. An expression for the large deviation function of the tagged particle position is obtained, including the case of the stationary measure with uniform density $ρ$.

On the $q$-TASEP with a random initial condition

When studying fluctuations of models in the 1D KPZ class including the ASEP and the $q$-TASEP, a standard approach has been to first write down a formula for $q$-deformed moments and constitute their generating function. This works well for the step initial condition, but there is a difficulty for a random initial condition (including the stationary case): in this case only the first few moments are finite and the rest diverge. In a previous work [16], we presented a method dealing directly with the $q$-deformed Laplace transform of an observable, in which the above difficulty does not appear. There the Ramanujan's summation formula and the Cauchy determinant for the theta functions play an important role. In this note, we give an alternative approach for the $q$-TASEP without using them.

Exact confirmation of 1D nonlinear fluctuating hydrodynamics for a two-species exclusion process

We consider current statistics for a two species exclusion process of particles hopping in opposite directions on a one-dimensional lattice. We derive an exact formula for the Green's function as well as for a joint current distribution of the model, and study its long time behavior. For a step type initial condition, we show that the limiting distribution is a product of the Gaussian and the GUE Tracy-Widom distribution. This is the first analytic confirmation for a multi-component system of a prediction from the recently proposed non-linear fluctuating hydrodynamics for one dimensional systems.

Free energy distribution of the stationary O'Connell-Yor directed random polymer model

We study the semi-discrete directed polymer model introduced by O'Connell-Yor in its stationary regime, based on our previous work on the stationary $q$-totally asymmetric simple exclusion process ($q$-TASEP) using a two-sided $q$-Whittaker process. We give a formula for the free energy distribution of the polymer model in terms of Fredholm determinant and show that the universal KPZ stationary distribution appears in the long time limit. We also consider the limit to the stationary KPZ equation and discuss the connections with previously found formulas.

Fluctuations for stationary $q$-TASEP

We consider the $q$-totally asymmetric simple exclusion process ($q$-TASEP) in the stationary regime and study the fluctuation of the position of a particle. We first observe that the problem can be studied as a limiting case of an $N$-particle $q$-TASEP with a random initial condition and with particle dependent hopping rate. Then we explain how this $N$-particle $q$-TASEP can be encoded in a dynamics on a two-sided Gelfand-Tsetlin cone described by a two-sided $q$-Whittaker process and present a Fredholm determinant formula for the $q$-Laplace transform of the position of a particle. Two main ingredients in its derivation is the Ramanujan's bilateral summation formula and the Cauchy determinant identity for the theta function with an extra parameter. Based on this we establish that the position of a particle obeys the universal stationary KPZ distribution (the Baik-Rains distribution) in the long time limit.

Determinantal structures in the O'Connell-Yor directed random polymer model

We study the semi-discrete directed random polymer model introduced by O'Connell and Yor. We obtain a representation for the moment generating function of the polymer partition function in terms of a determinantal measure. This measure is an extension of the probability measure of the eigenvalues for the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE) in random matrix theory. To establish the relation, we introduce another determinantal measure on larger degrees of freedom and consider its few properties, from which the representation above follows immediately.

Coupled Kardar-Parisi-Zhang Equations in One Dimension

Over the past years our understanding of the scaling properties of the solutions to the one-dimensional KPZ equation has advanced considerably, both theoretically and experimentally. In our contribution we export these insights to the case of coupled KPZ equations in one dimension. We establish equivalence with nonlinear fluctuating hydrodynamics for multi-component driven stochastic lattice gases. To check the predictions of the theory, we perform Monte Carlo simulations of the two-component AHR model. Its steady state is computed using the matrix product ansatz. Thereby all coefficients appearing in the coupled KPZ equations are deduced from the microscopic model. Time correlations in the steady state are simulated and we confirm not only the scaling exponent, but also the scaling function and the non-universal coefficients.

Asymmetric stochastic transport models with ${\mathcal{U}}_q(\mathfrak{su}(1,1))$ symmetry

By using the algebraic construction outlined in \cite{CGRS}, we introduce several Markov processes related to the ${\mathcal{U}}_q(\mathfrak{su}(1,1))$ quantum Lie algebra. These processes serve as asymmetric transport models and their algebraic structure easily allows to deduce duality properties of the systems. The results include: (a) the asymmetric version of the Inclusion Process, which is self-dual; (b) the diffusion limit of this process, which is a natural asymmetric analogue of the Brownian Energy Process and which turns out to have the symmetric Inclusion Process as a dual process; (c) the asymmetric analogue of the KMP Process, which also turns out to have a symmetric dual process. We give applications of the various duality relations by computing exponential moments of the current.
