Chaos by Magic

There is a property of a quantum state called magic. It measures how difficult for a classical computer to simulate the state. In this paper, we study magic of states in the integrable and chaotic regimes of the higher-spin generalization of the Ising model through two quantities called "Mana" and "Robustness of Magic" (RoM). We find that in the chaotic regime, Mana increases monotonically in time in the early-time region, and at late times these quantities oscillate around some non-zero value that increases linearly with respect to the system size. Our result also suggests that under chaotic dynamics, any state evolves to a state whose Mana almost saturates the optimal upper bound, i.e., the state becomes "maximally magical." We find that RoM also shows similar behaviors. On the other hand, in the integrable regime, Mana and RoM behave periodically in time in contrast to the chaotic case. In the anti-de Sitter/conformal field theory correspondence (AdS/CFT correspondence), classical spacetime emerges from the chaotic nature of the dual quantum system. Our result suggests that magic of quantum states is strongly involved behind the emergence of spacetime geometry.

SU(N) q-Toda equations from mass deformed ABJM theory

It is known that the partition functions of the U(N) x U(N+M) ABJM theory satisfy a set of bilinear relations, which, written in the grand partition function, was recently found to be the q-Painleve III_3 equation. In this paper we have suggested a similar bilinear relation holds for the ABJM theory with N=6 preserving mass deformation for an arbitrary complex value of mass parameter, to which we have provided several non-trivial checks by using the exact values of the partition functions for various N,k,M and the mass parameter. For particular choices of the mass parameters labeled by integers $ν,a$ as $m_1=m_2=-πi(ν-2a)/ν$, the bilinear relation corresponds to the q-deformation of the affine SU($ν$) Toda equation in $τ$-form.

A sharp transition in quantum chaos and thermodynamics of mass deformed SYK model

We review our recent work [arXiv:2009.10759] where we studied the chaotic property of the two coupled Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev systems exhibiting a Hawking-Page like phase transition. By computing the out-of-time-ordered correlator in the large N limit by using the bilocal field formalism, we found that the chaos exponent of this model shows a discontinuous fall-off at the phase transition temperature. Hence in this model the Hawking-Page like transition is correlated with a transition in chaoticity, as expected from the relation between a black hole geometry and the chaotic behavior in the dual field theory.

Quantum Chaos, Thermodynamics and Black Hole Microstates in the mass deformed SYK model

We study various aspects of the mass deformed SYK model which can escape the interiors of pure boundary state black holes. SYK boundary states are given by a simple local boundary condition on the Majorana fermions and then evolved in Euclidean time in the SYK Hamiltonian. We study the ground state of this mass deformed SYK model in detail. We also use SYK boundary states as a variational approximation to the ground state of the mass deformed SYK model. We compare variational approximation with the exact ground state results and they showed a good agreement. We also study the time evolution of the mass deformed ground state under the SYK Hamiltonian. We give a gravity interpretation of the mass deformed ground state and its time evolutions. In gravity side, mass deformation gives a way to prepare black hole microstates that are similar to pure boundary state black holes. Escaping protocol on these ground states simply gives a global AdS2 with an IR end of the world brane. We also study the thermodynamics and quantum chaotic properties of this mass deformed SYK model. Interestingly, we do not observe the Hawking Page like phase transition in this model in spite of similarity of the Hamiltonian with eternal traversable wormhole model where we have the phase transition.

Chaos exponents of SYK traversable wormholes

In this paper we study the chaos exponent, the exponential growth rate of the out-of-time-ordered four point functions, in a two coupled SYK models which exhibits a first order phase transition between the high temperature black hole phase and the low temperature gapped phase interpreted as a traversable wormhole. We see that as the temperature decreases the chaos exponent exhibits a discontinuous fall-off from the value of order the universal bound $2π/β$ at the critical temperature of the phase transition, which is consistent with the expected relation between black holes and strong chaos. Interestingly, the chaos exponent is small but non-zero even in the wormhole phase. This is surprising but consistent with the observation on the decay rate of the two point function [arXiv:2003.03916], and we found the chaos exponent and the decay rate indeed obey the same temperature dependence in this regime. We also studied the chaos exponent of a closely related model with single SYK term, and found that the chaos exponent of this model is always greater than that of the two coupled model in the entire parameter space.

Quantum chaos transition in a two-site SYK model dual to an eternal traversable wormhole

It has been recently proposed by Maldacena and Qi that an eternal traversable wormhole in a two dimensional Anti de Sitter space (${\rm AdS}_2$) is the gravity dual of the low temperature limit of two Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models coupled by a relevant interaction (which we will refer to as spin operator). In this paper, we study spectral and eigenstate properties of this coupled SYK model. We have found that level statistics in the tail of the spectrum, and for a sufficiently weak coupling, shows substantial deviations from random matrix theory which suggests that traversable wormholes are not quantum chaotic. By contrast, for sufficiently strong coupling, corresponding to the black hole phase, level statistics are well described by random matrix theory. This transition in level statistics coincides approximately with a previously reported Hawking-Page transition for weak coupling. We have shown explicitly that this thermodynamic transition turns into a sharp crossover as the coupling increases. Likewise, this critical coupling also corresponds with the one at which the overlap between the ground state and the thermofield double state (TFD) is smallest. In the range of sizes we can reach by exact diagonalization, the ground state is well approximated by the TFD state only in the strong coupling limit. This is due to the fact that the ground state is close to the eigenstate of the spin operator corresponding to the lowest eigenvalue which is an exact TFD state at infinite temperature. In this region, the spectral density is separated into blobs centered around the eigenvalues of the spin operator. For weaker couplings, the exponential decay of coefficients in a tensor product basis, typical of the TFD, becomes power law. Finally, we have also found that the total Hamiltonian has an additional discrete symmetry which has not been reported previously.

Symmetry Breaking in Quantum Curves and Super Chern-Simons Matrix Models

It was known that quantum curves and super Chern-Simons matrix models correspond to each other. From the viewpoint of symmetry, the algebraic curve of genus one, called the del Pezzo curve, enjoys symmetry of the exceptional algebra, while the super Chern-Simons matrix model is described by the free energy of topological strings on the del Pezzo background with the symmetry broken. We study the symmetry breaking of the quantum cousin of the algebraic curve and reproduce the results in the super Chern-Simons matrix model.

Supersymmetry Breaking in a Large N Gauge Theory with Gravity Dual

We study phase structure of mass-deformed ABJM theory which is a three dimensional $\mathcal{N}=6$ superconformal theory deformed by mass parameters and has the gauge group $\text{U}(N)\times \text{U}(N)$ with Chern-Simons levels $(k,-k)$ which may have a gravity dual. We discuss that the mass deformed ABJM theory on $S^3$ breaks supersymmetry in a large-$N$ limit if the mass is larger than a critical value. To see some evidence for this conjecture, we compute the partition function exactly, and numerically by using the Monte Carlo Simulation for small $N$. We discover that the partition function has zeroes as a function of the mass deformation parameters if $N\ge k$, which supports the large-$N$ supersymmetry breaking. We also find a solution to the large-$N$ saddle point equations, where the free energy is consistent with the finite $N$ result.

Index and duality of minimal N=4 Chern-Simons-matter theories

We perform a first step analysis toward generalization of the classification of N=4 linear quiver gauge theories by Gaiotto and Witten including Chern-Simons interaction. For this we investigate minimal N=4 U(N_1)_k x U(N_2)_{-k} Chern-Simons theories and their superconformal indices. In the previous publication we analyzed the three-sphere partition function of the theories, which implies that the theory is good/ugly/bad if k-N_1-N_2 is greater than/equal to/smaller than -1. In this paper we verify that this classification is consistent with the behavior of the superconformal index. We compare the superconformal indices for several pairs of non-bad theories connected by the Hanany-Witten transition and confirm their coincidence up to the contribution of one hypermultiplet.

Thouless time for mass-deformed SYK

We study the onset of RMT dynamics in the mass-deformed SYK model (i.e. an SYK model deformed by a quadratic random interaction) in terms of the strength of the quadratic deformation. We use as chaos probes both the connected unfolded Spectral Form Factor (SFF) as well as the Gaussian-filtered SFF, which has been recently introduced in the literature. We show that they detect the chaotic/integrable transition of the mass-deformed SYK model at different values of the mass deformation: the Gaussian-filtered SFF sees the transition for large values of the mass deformation; the connected unfolded SFF sees the transition at small values. The latter is in qualitative agreement with the transition as seen by the OTOCs. We argue that the chaotic/integrable deformation affect the energy levels inhomogeneously: for small values of the mass deformation only the low-lying states are modified while for large values of the mass deformation also the states in the bulk of the spectrum move to the integrable behavior.

Complete factorization in minimal N=4 Chern-Simons-matter theory

We investigate an N=4 U(N)_k x U(N+M)_{-k} Chern-Simons theory coupled to one bifundamental hypermultiplet by employing its partition function, which is given by 2N+M dimensional integration via localization. Surprisingly, by performing the integration explicitly we find that the partition function completely factorizes into that of the pure Chern-Simons theory for two gauge groups and an analogous contribution for the bifundamental hypermultiplet. Using the factorized form of the partition function we argue the level/rank duality, which is also expected from the Hanany-Witten transition in the type IIB brane realization. We also present the all order 't Hooft expansion of the partition function and comment on the connection to the higher-spin theory.

Superconformal Chern-Simons Theories from del Pezzo Geometries

We present an explicit expression for the grand potential of the U(N)^3 superconformal Chern-Simons theory with the Chern-Simons levels being (k,0,-k). From the viewpoint of the Newton polygon, it is expected that the grand potential is given by the free energy of the topological string theory on the local D_5 del Pezzo geometry, though the explicit identification was a puzzle for years. We show how the expectation is realized explicitly. As a bonus, we can also study the Z_2 orbifold of this theory and find the grand potential is now given in terms of the local E_7 del Pezzo geometry.

Instanton Effects in Rank Deformed Superconformal Chern-Simons Theories from Topological Strings

In the so-called (2,2) theory, which is the U(N)^4 circular quiver superconformal Chern-Simons theory with levels (k,0,-k,0), it was known that the instanton effects are described by the free energy of topological strings whose Gopakumar-Vafa invariants coincide with those of the local D_5 del Pezzo geometry. By considering two types of one-parameter rank deformations U(N) x U(N+M) x U(N+2M) x U(N+M) and U(N+M) x U(N) x U(N+M) x U(N), we classify the known diagonal BPS indices by degrees. Together with other two types of one-parameter deformations, we further propose the topological string expression when both of the above two deformations are turned on.

Mass Deformed ABJM Theory on Three Sphere in Large N limit

In this paper the free energy of the mass deformed ABJM theory on S^3 in the large N limit is studied. We find a new solution of the large N saddle point equation which exists for an arbitrary value of the mass parameter, and compute the free energies for these solutions. We also show that the solution corresponding to an asymptotically AdS_4 geometry is singular at a certain value of the mass parameter and does not exist over this critical value. It is not clear what the gravity dual of the mass deformed ABJM theory on S^3 for the mass parameter larger than the critical value is.

Large N behavior of mass deformed ABJM theory

In this paper, using the localization technique we analyze the large N limit of the mass deformed Aharony-Bergman-Jafferis-Maldacena (ABJM) theory on the three sphere with a finite mass parameter and finite Chern-Simons levels. We find two different solutions of the saddle point equations in the large N limit. With these solutions we compute the free energy and find that there is a first order phase transition. Our results may predict a phase transition in the dual gravity theory.

Orientifold ABJM Matrix Model: Chiral Projections and Worldsheet Instantons

We study the partition function of the orientifold ABJM theory, which is a superconformal Chern-Simons theory associated with the orthosymplectic supergroup. We find that the partition function associated with any orthosymplectic supergroup can be realized as the partition function of a Fermi gas system whose density matrix is identical to that associated with the corresponding unitary supergroup with a projection to the even or odd chirality. Furthermore we propose an identity which gives directly all of the Gopakumar-Vafa invariants for the worldsheet instanton effects in the chirally projected theories.

Instanton effects in ABJM theory with general R-charge assignments

We study the large N expansion of the partition function of the quiver superconformal Chern-Simons theories deformed by two continuous parameters which correspond to the general R-charge assignment to the matter fields. Though the deformation breaks the conformal symmetry, we find that the partition function shares various structures with the superconformal cases, such as the Airy function expression of the perturbative expansion in 1/N with the overall constant A(k) related to the constant map in the ABJM case through a simple rescaling of k. We also identify five kinds of the non-perturbative effects in 1/N which correspond to the membrane instantons. The instanton exponents and the singular structure of the coefficients depend on the continuous deformation parameters, in contrast to the superconformal case where all the parameters are integers associated with the orbifold action on the moduli space. This implies that the singularity of the instanton effects would be observable also in the gravity side.

Superconformal Chern-Simons Partition Functions of Affine D-type Quiver from Fermi Gas

We consider the partition function of the superconformal Chern-Simons theories with the quiver diagram being the affine D-type Dynkin diagram. Rewriting the partition function into that of a Fermi gas system, we show that the perturbative expansions in 1/N are summed up to an Airy function, as in the ABJM theory or more generally the theories of the affine A-type quiver. As a corollary, this provides a proof for the previous proposal in the large N limit. For special values of the Chern-Simons levels, we further identify three species of the membrane instantons and also conjecture an exact expression of the overall constant, which corresponds to the constant map in the topological string theory.
