Convergence rates for rank-based models with applications to portfolio theory

We determine rates of convergence of rank-based interacting diffusions and semimartingale reflecting Brownian motions to equilibrium. Convergence rate for the total variation metric is derived using Lyapunov functions. Sharp fluctuations of additive functionals are obtained using Transportation Cost-Information inequalities for Markov processes. We work out various applications to the rank-based abstract equity markets used in Stochastic Portfolio Theory. For example, we produce quantitative bounds, including constants, for fluctuations of market weights and occupation times of various ranks for individual coordinates. Another important application is the comparison of performance between symmetric functionally generated portfolios and the market portfolio. This produces estimates of probabilities of "beating the market".

Hybrid Atlas models

We study Atlas-type models of equity markets with local characteristics that depend on both name and rank, and in ways that induce a stable capital distribution. Ergodic properties and rankings of processes are examined with reference to the theory of reflected Brownian motions in polyhedral domains. In the context of such models we discuss properties of various investment strategies, including the so-called growth-optimal and universal portfolios.

On collisions of Brownian particles

We examine the behavior of $n$ Brownian particles diffusing on the real line with bounded, measurable drift and bounded, piecewise continuous diffusion coefficients that depend on the current configuration of particles. Sufficient conditions are established for the absence and for the presence of triple collisions among the particles. As an application to the Atlas model for equity markets, we study a special construction of such systems of diffusing particles using Brownian motions with reflection on polyhedral domains.

Efficient estimation of one-dimensional diffusion first passage time densities via Monte Carlo simulation

We propose a method for estimating first passage time densities of one-dimensional diffusions via Monte Carlo simulation. Our approach involves a representation of the first passage time density as expectation of a functional of the three-dimensional Brownian bridge. As the latter process can be simulated exactly, our method leads to almost unbiased estimators. Furthermore, since the density is estimated directly, a convergence of order $1 / \sqrt{N}$, where $N$ is the sample size, is achieved, the last being in sharp contrast to the slower non-parametric rates achieved by kernel smoothing of cumulative distribution functions.
