Lepton Number Violation: Seesaw Models and Their Collider Tests

The Majorana nature of neutrinos is strongly motivated from the theoretical and phenomenological point of view. A plethora of neutrino mass models, known collectively as Seesaw models, exist that could generate both a viable neutrino mass spectrum and mixing pattern. They can also lead to rich, new phenomenology, including lepton number non-conservation as well as new particles, that may be observable at collider experiments. It is therefore vital to search for such new phenomena and the mass scale associated with neutrino mass generation at high energy colliders. In this review, we consider a number of representative Seesaw scenarios as phenomenological benchmarks, including the characteristic Type I, II, and III Seesaw mechanisms, their extensions and hybridizations, as well as radiative constructions. We present new and updated predictions for analyses featuring lepton number violation and expected coverage in the theory parameter space at current and future colliders. We emphasize new production and decay channels, their phenomenological relevance and treatment across different facilities in $e^+e^-$, $e^-p$ and $pp$ collisions, as well as the available Monte Carlo tools available for studying Seesaw partners in collider environments.

Type II Seesaw with scalar dark matter in light of AMS-02, DAMPE and Fermi-LAT

The Standard Model (SM) supplemented by Type II Seesaw and a SM gauge-singlet scalar dark matter (DM) is a very simple framework to incorporate the observed neutrino oscillations and provide a plausible DM candidate. In this framework, the scalar DM naturally has a leptophilic nature with a pair annihilating mainly into the SM SU(2)$_L$ triplet Higgs scalar of Type II Seesaw which, in turn, decay into leptons. In this work, we consider indirect signatures of this leptophilic DM and examine the spectrum of the cosmic ray electron/positron flux from DM pair annihilations in the Galactic halo. Given an astrophysical background spectrum of the cosmic ray electron/positron flux, we find that the contributions from DM annihilations can nicely fit the observed data from the AMS-02, DAMPE and Fermi-LAT collaborations, with a multi-TeV range of DM mass and a boost factor for the DM annihilation cross section of ${\cal O}(1000)$. The boost factor has a slight tension with the Fermi-LAT data for gamma-ray from dwarf spheroidal galaxies, which can be ameliorated with an enhanced local DM density by a factor of about 2.

Characterizing solute hydrogen and hydrides in pure and alloyed titanium at the atomic scale

Ti has a high affinity for hydrogen and is a typical hydride formers. Ti-hydride are brittle phases which probably cause premature failure of Ti-alloys. Here, we used atom probe tomography and electron microscopy to investigate the hydrogen distribution in a set of specimens of commercially pure Ti, model and commercial Ti-alloys. Although likely partly introduced during specimen preparation with the focused-ion beam, we show formation of Ti-hydrides along α grain boundaries and α/\b{eta} phase boundaries in commercial pure Ti and α+\b{eta} binary model alloys. No hydrides are observed in the α phase in alloys with Al addition or quenched-in Mo supersaturation.

Scalar dark matter, Type II Seesaw and the DAMPE cosmic ray $e^+ + e^-$ excess

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) has reported a measurement of the flux of high energy cosmic ray electrons plus positrons (CREs) in the energy range between $25$ GeV and $4.6$ TeV. With unprecedented high energy resolution, the DAMPE data exhibit an excess of the CREs flux at an energy of around $1.4$ TeV. In this letter, we discuss how the observed excess can be understood in a minimal framework where the Standard Model (SM) is supplemented by a stable SM singlet scalar as dark matter (DM) and type II seesaw for generating the neutrino mass matrix. In our framework, a pair of DM particles annihilates into a pair of the SM SU(2) triplet scalars ($Δ$s) in type II seesaw, and the subsequent $Δ$ decays create the primary source of the excessive CREs around $1.4$ TeV. The lepton flavor structure of the primary source of CREs has a direct relationship with the neutrino oscillation data. We find that the DM interpretation of the DAMPE excess determines the pattern of neutrino mass spectrum to be the inverted hierarchy type, taking into account the constraints from the Fermi-LAT observations of dwarf spheroidal galaxies.

Type II Seesaw and tau lepton at the HL-LHC, HE-LHC and FCC-hh

The tau lepton plays important role in distinguishing neutrino mass patterns and determining the chirality nature in heavy scalar mediated neutrino mass models, in the light of the neutrino oscillation experiments and its polarization measurement. We investigate the lepton flavor signatures with tau lepton at LHC upgrades, i.e. HL-LHC, HE-LHC and FCC-hh, through leptonic processes from doubly charged Higgs in the Type II Seesaw. We find that for the channel with one tau lepton in final states, the accessible doubly charged Higgs mass at HL-LHC can reach 655 GeV and 695 GeV for the neutrino mass patterns of normal hierarchy (NH) and inverted hierarchy (IH) respectively, with the luminosity of 3000 fb$^{-1}$. Higher masses, 975-1930 GeV for NH and 1035-2070 GeV for IH, can be achieved at HE-LHC and FCC-hh.

Mechanical Properties of Ultralow Density Graphene Oxide/Polydimethylsiloxane Foams

Low-density, highly porous graphene/graphene oxide (GO) based-foams have shown high performance in energy absorption applications, even under high compressive deformations. In general, foams are very effective as energy dissipative materials and have been widely used in many areas such as automotive, aerospace and biomedical industries. In the case of graphene-based foams, the good mechanical properties are mainly attributed to the intrinsic graphene and/or GO electronic and mechanical properties. Despite the attractive physical properties of graphene/GO based-foams, their structural and thermal stabilities are still a problem for some applications. For instance, they are easily degraded when placed in flowing solutions, either by the collapsing of their layers or just by structural disintegration into small pieces. Recently, a new and scalable synthetic approach to produce low-density 3D macroscopic GO structure interconnected with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymeric chains (pGO) was proposed. A controlled amount of PDMS is infused into the freeze-dried foam resulting into a very rigid structure with improved mechanical properties, such as tensile plasticity and toughness. The PDMS wets the graphene oxide sheets and acts like a glue bonding PDMS and GO sheets. In order to obtain further insights on mechanisms behind the enhanced mechanical pGO response we carried out fully atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Based on MD results, we build up a structural model that can explain the experimentally observed mechanical behavior.

Constructive Identification of Heterogeneous Elasticities in the Cobb-Douglas Production Function

This paper presents the identification of heterogeneous elasticities in the Cobb-Douglas production function. The identification is constructive with closed-form formulas for the elasticity with respect to each input for each firm. We propose that the flexible input cost ratio plays the role of a control function under "non-collinear heterogeneity" between elasticities with respect to two flexible inputs. The ex ante flexible input cost share can be used to identify the elasticities with respect to flexible inputs for each firm. The elasticities with respect to labor and capital can be subsequently identified for each firm under the timing assumption admitting the functional independence.

On the Optimality of Kernel-Embedding Based Goodness-of-Fit Tests

The reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS) embedding of distributions offers a general and flexible framework for testing problems in arbitrary domains and has attracted considerable amount of attention in recent years. To gain insights into their operating characteristics, we study here the statistical performance of such approaches within a minimax framework. Focusing on the case of goodness-of-fit tests, our analyses show that a vanilla version of the kernel-embedding based test could be suboptimal, and suggest a simple remedy by moderating the embedding. We prove that the moderated approach provides optimal tests for a wide range of deviations from the null and can also be made adaptive over a large collection of interpolation spaces. Numerical experiments are presented to further demonstrate the merits of our approach.

Sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array to the detection of a dark matter signal in comparison to direct detection and collider experiments

Imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) that are sensitive to potential $γ$-ray signals from dark matter (DM) annihilation above $\sim50$ GeV will soon be superseded by the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). CTA will have a point source sensitivity an order of magnitude better than currently operating IACTs and will cover a broad energy range between 20 GeV and 300 TeV. Using effective field theory and simplified models to calculate $γ$-ray spectra resulting from DM annihilation, we compare the prospects to constrain such models with CTA observations of the Galactic center with current and near-future measurements at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and direct detection experiments. For DM annihilations via vector or pseudoscalar couplings, CTA observations will be able to probe DM models out of reach of the LHC, and, if DM is coupled to standard fermions by a pseudoscalar particle, beyond the limits of current direct detection experiments.

Revisiting simplified dark matter models in terms of AMS-02 and Fermi-LAT

We perform an analysis of the simplified dark matter models in the light of cosmic ray observables by AMS-02 and Fermi-LAT. We assume fermion, scalar or vector dark matter particle with a leptophobic spin-0 mediator that couples only to Standard Model quarks and dark matter via scalar and/or pseudo-scalar bilinear. The propagation and injection parameters of cosmic rays are determined by the observed fluxes of nuclei from AMS-02. We find that the AMS-02 observations are consistent with the dark matter framework within the uncertainties. The AMS-02 antiproton data prefer 30 (50) GeV - 5 TeV dark matter mass and require an effective annihilation cross section in the region of 4x10^{-27} (7x10^{-27}) - 4x10^{-24} cm^3/s for the simplified fermion (scalar and vector) dark matter models. The cross sections below 2x10^{-26} cm^3/s can evade the constraint from Fermi-LAT dwarf galaxies for about 100 GeV dark matter mass.

Antimagic orientations of even regular graphs

A labeling of a digraph $D$ with $m$ arcs is a bijection from the set of arcs of $D$ to $\{1, \ldots, m\}$. A labeling of $D$ is antimagic if no two vertices in $D$ have the same vertex-sum, where the vertex-sum of a vertex $u\in V(D)$ for a labeling is the sum of labels of all arcs entering $u$ minus the sum of labels of all arcs leaving $u$. Motivated by the conjecture of Hartsfield and Ringel from 1990 on antimagic labelings of graphs, Hefetz, Mütze, and Schwartz [On antimagic directed graphs, J Graph Theory 64 (2010) 219--232] initiated the study of antimagic labelings of digraphs, and conjectured that every connected graph admits an antimagic orientation, where an orientation $D$ of a graph $G$ is antimagic if $D$ has an antimagic labeling. It remained unknown whether every disjoint union of cycles admits an antimagic orientation. In this paper, we first answer this question in the positive by proving that every $2$-regular graph has an antimagic orientation. We then show that for any integer $d\ge2$, every connected, $2d$-regular graph has an antimagic orientation. Our technique is new.

Quantile Treatment Effects in Difference in Differences Models under Dependence Restrictions and with only Two Time Periods

This paper shows that the Conditional Quantile Treatment Effect on the Treated can be identified using a combination of (i) a conditional Distributional Difference in Differences assumption and (ii) an assumption on the conditional dependence between the change in untreated potential outcomes and the initial level of untreated potential outcomes for the treated group. The second assumption recovers the unknown dependence from the observed dependence for the untreated group. We also consider estimation and inference in the case where all of the covariates are discrete. We propose a uniform inference procedure based on the exchangeable bootstrap and show its validity. We conclude the paper by estimating the effect of state-level changes in the minimum wage on the distribution of earnings for subgroups defined by race, gender, and education.

Simplified dark matter models in the light of AMS-02 antiproton data

In this work we perform an analysis of the recent AMS-02 antiproton flux and the antiproton-to-proton ratio in the framework of simplified dark matter models. To predict the AMS-02 observables we adopt the propagation and injection parameters determined by the observed fluxes of nuclei. We assume that the dark matter particle is a Dirac fermionic dark matter, with leptophobic pseudoscalar or axialvector mediator that couples only to Standard Model quarks and dark matter particles. We find that the AMS-02 observations are consistent with the dark matter hypothesis within the uncertainties. The antiproton data prefer a dark matter (mediator) mass in the 700 GeV--5 TeV region for the annihilation with pseudoscalar mediator and greater than 700 GeV (200 GeV--1 TeV) for the annihilation with axialvector mediator, respectively, at about 68% confidence level. The AMS-02 data require an effective dark matter annihilation cross section in the region of 1x10^{-25} -- 1x10^{-24} (1x10^{-25} -- 4x10^{-24}) cm^3/s for the simplified model with pseudoscalar (axialvector) mediator. The constraints from the LHC and Fermi-LAT are also discussed.

Dark matter properties implied by gamma ray interstellar emission models

We infer dark matter properties from gamma ray residuals extracted using eight different interstellar emission scenarios proposed by the Fermi-LAT Collaboration to explain the Galactic Center gamma ray excess. Adopting the most plausible simplified ansatz, we assume that the dark matter particle is a Majorana fermion interacting with standard fermions via a scalar mediator. Using this theoretical hypothesis and the Fermi residuals we calculate Bayesian evidences, including Fermi-LAT exclusion limits from 15 dwarf spheroidal galaxies as well. Our Bayes factors single out four of the Fermi scenarios as compatible with the simplified dark matter model. In the most preferred scenario the dark matter (mediator) mass is in the 100-500 (1-200) GeV range and its annihilation is dominated by top quark final state. Less preferred but still plausible is annihilation into b\bar{b} and tau^+tau^- final states with an order of magnitude lower dark matter mass. Our conclusion is that the properties of dark matter extracted from gamma ray data are highly sensitive to the modeling of the interstellar emission.

AMS-02 fits Dark Matter

In this work we perform a comprehensive statistical analysis of the AMS-02 electron, positron fluxes and the antiproton-to-proton ratio in the context of a simplified dark matter model. We include known, standard astrophysical sources and a dark matter component in the cosmic ray injection spectra. To predict the AMS-02 observables we use propagation parameters extracted from observed fluxes of heavier nuclei and the low energy part of the AMS-02 data. We assume that the dark matter particle is a Majorana fermion coupling to third generation fermions via a spin-0 mediator, and annihilating to multiple channels at once. The simultaneous presence of various annihilation channels provides the dark matter model with additional flexibility, and this enables us to simultaneously fit all cosmic ray spectra using a simple particle physics model and coherent astrophysical assumptions. Our results indicate that AMS-02 observations are not only consistent with the dark matter hypothesis within the uncertainties, but adding a dark matter contribution improves the fit to the data. Assuming, however, that dark matter is solely responsible for this improvement of the fit, it is difficult to evade the latest CMB limits in this model.

$\it{Ab}$ $\it{initio}$ nuclear many-body perturbation calculations in the Hartree-Fock basis

Starting from realistic nuclear forces, the chiral N$^3$LO and JISP16, we have applied many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) to the structure of closed-shell nuclei, $^4$He and $^{16}$O. The two-body N$^3$LO interaction is softened by a similarity renormalization group transformation while JISP16 is adopted without renormalization. The MBPT calculations are performed within the Hartree-Fock (HF) bases. The angular momentum coupled scheme is used, which can reduce the computational task. Corrections up to the third order in energy and up to the second order in radius are evaluated. Higher-order corrections in the HF basis are small relative to the leading-order perturbative result. Using the anti-symmetrized Goldstone diagram expansions of the wave function, we directly correct the one-body density for the calculation of the radius, rather than calculate corrections to the occupation propabilities of single-particle orbits as found in other treatments. We compare our results with other methods where available and find good agreement. This supports the conclusion that our methods produce reasonably converged results with these interactions. We also compare our results with experimental data.

Exotic Higgs Decay via Charged Higgs

The most common search channel for heavy neutral Higgses in models with an extension of the Standard Model Higgs sector is $A/H^0\rightarrow ττ$, which becomes ineffective when new decay modes of $A/H^0$ open. In this paper, we analyzed two such channels involving charged Higgses in the final states: $A/H^0 \rightarrow W^\pm H^\mp$ and $H^0 \rightarrow H^+H^-$. With the consequent decay of $H^\pm\rightarrow τν$, we found that the limits for $σ\times{BR}(gg \rightarrow A/H^0 \rightarrow W^\pm H^\mp)\times {BR}(H^\pm \rightarrow τν)$ vary from 30 to 10 fb for $m_{A/H^0}$ between 300 and 1000 GeV for 95% C.L. exclusion, and about 80 to 30 fb for 5$σ$ discovery. For $H^+H^-$ mode, 95% C.L. limits on $σ\times {BR}(gg\to H^0\to H^+ H^-)\times {BR}^2(H^\pm\to τν)$ vary from 9 to 4 fb for $m_{H^0}$ between 400 and 1000 GeV, while the 5$σ$ reach is about 20 to 10 fb. We further interpret the cross section limits in the Type II 2HDM parameter space. While $A\rightarrow W^\pm H^\mp$ offers great sensitivity in both $\sin(β-α)$ versus $\tanβ$ and $m_A$ versus $\tanβ$ parameter space, $H^0\rightarrow H^+ H^-$ can cover most of the parameter space for $H^0$. Reach in $H^0\rightarrow W^\pm H^\mp$ is more limited, especially for $m_{H^0}>2 m_{H^\pm}$. It is, however, complementary to $H^0\rightarrow H^+ H^-$ when ${BR}(H^0\rightarrow H^+ H^-)$ is accidentally suppressed.

Dynamical behavior of a system modeling wave bifurcations with higher order viscosity

We rigorously show that a class of systems of partial differential equations modeling wave bifurcations supports stationary equivariant bifurcation dynamics through deriving its full dynamics on the center manifold(s). A direct consequence of our result is that the oscillations of the dynamics are \textit{not} due to rotation waves though the system exhibits Euclidean symmetries. The main difficulties of carrying out the program are: 1) the system under study contains multi bifurcation parameters and we do not know \textit{a priori} how they come into play in the bifurcation dynamics. 2) the representation of the linear operator on the center space is a $2\times 2$ zero matrix, which makes the characteristic condition in the well-known normal form theorem trivial. We overcome the first difficulty by using projection method. We managed to overcome the second subtle difficulty by using a conjugate pair coordinate for the center space and applying duality and projection arguments. Due to the specific complex pair parametrization, we could naturally get a form of the center manifold reduction function, which makes the study of the current dynamics on the center manifold possible. The symmetry of the system plays an essential role in excluding the possibility of bifurcating rotation waves.
