Interpreting the Fermi-LAT gamma ray excess in the simplified framework

We test the plausibility that a Majorana fermion dark matter candidate with a scalar mediator explains the gamma ray excess from the Galactic center. Assuming that the mediator couples to all third generation fermions we calculate observables for dark matter abundance and scattering on nuclei, gamma, positron, and anti-proton cosmic ray fluxes, radio emission from dark matter annihilation, and the effect of dark matter annihilations on the CMB. After discarding the controversial radio observation the rest of the data prefers a dark matter (mediator) mass in the 10-100 (3-1000) GeV region and weakly correlated couplings to bottom quarks and tau leptons with values of 10^{-3}-1 at the 68\% credibility level.

Electronic health record phenotyping improves detection and screening of type 2 diabetes in the general United States population: A cross-sectional, unselected, retrospective study

Objectives: In the United States, 25% of people with type 2 diabetes are undiagnosed. Conventional screening models use limited demographic information to assess risk. We evaluated whether electronic health record (EHR) phenotyping could improve diabetes screening, even when records are incomplete and data are not recorded systematically across patients and practice locations. Methods: In this cross-sectional, retrospective study, data from 9,948 US patients between 2009 and 2012 were used to develop a pre-screening tool to predict current type 2 diabetes, using multivariate logistic regression. We compared (1) a full EHR model containing prescribed medications, diagnoses, and traditional predictive information, (2) a restricted EHR model where medication information was removed, and (3) a conventional model containing only traditional predictive information (BMI, age, gender, hypertensive and smoking status). We additionally used a random-forests classification model to judge whether including additional EHR information could increase the ability to detect patients with Type 2 diabetes on new patient samples. Results: Using a patient's full or restricted EHR to detect diabetes was superior to using basic covariates alone (p<0.001). The random forests model replicated on out-of-bag data. Migraines and cardiac dysrhythmias were negatively associated with type 2 diabetes, while acute bronchitis and herpes zoster were positively associated, among other factors. Conclusions: EHR phenotyping resulted in markedly superior detection of type 2 diabetes in a general US population, could increase the efficiency and accuracy of disease screening, and are capable of picking up signals in real-world records.

TauDecay: a library to simulate polarized tau decays via FeynRules and MadGraph5

TauDecay is a library of helicity amplitudes to simulate polarized tau decays, constructed in the FeynRules and MadGraph5 framework. Together with the leptonic mode, the decay library includes the main hadronic modes, τ\to ν_τ+π, 2π, and 3π, which are introduced as effective vertices by using FeynRules. The model file allows us to simulate tau decays when the on-shell tau production is kinematically forbidden. We also demonstrate that all possible correlations among the decay products of pair-produced taus through a Z boson and a scalar/pseudoscalar Higgs boson are produced automatically. The program has been tested carefully by making use of the standard tau decay library Tauola.

Simplified Dark Matter Models Confront the Gamma Ray Excess

Inspired by the excess of gamma rays from the Galactic Center, we confront a number of simplified dark matter models with experimental data. Assuming a single dark matter particle coupled to standard matter via a spin-0 mediator, we compare model evidences for Majorana fermion, real scalar and real vector dark matter candidates. We consider dark matter annihilation into various fermionic final states contributing to the observed differential gamma ray flux. Our likelihood function also includes the dark matter relic density, its elastic scattering cross section with nuclei, and collider limits. Using Bayesian inference we confine the mass and couplings strengths of the dark matter and mediator particle. Our results show that, if the gamma ray excess is due to dark matter the above parameters are well constrained by the observations. We find that the Majorana fermion dark matter model is supported the most by the data.

Equivariant Hopf bifurcation with arbitrary pressure laws

The equivariant Hopf bifurcation dynamics of a class of system of partial differential equations is carefully studied. The connections between the current dynamics and fundamental concepts in hyperbolic conservation laws are explained. The unique approximation property of center manifold reduction function is used in the current work to determine certain parameter in the normal form. The current work generalizes the study of the second author ([J. Yao, $O(2)$-Hopf bifurcation for a model of cellular shock instability, Physica D, 269 (2014), 63-75.]) and supplies a class of examples of $O(2)$ Hopf bifurcation with two parameters arising from systems of partial differential equations.

Thermal dark matter implies new physics not far above the weak scale

In this work we complete a model independent analysis of dark matter constraining its mass and interaction strengths with data from astro- and particle physics experiments. We use the effective field theory framework to describe interactions of thermal dark matter particles of the following types: real and complex scalars, Dirac and Majorana fermions, and vector bosons. Using Bayesian inference we calculate posterior probability distributions for the mass and interaction strengths for the various spin particles. The observationally favoured dark matter particle mass region is 10-100 GeV with effective interactions that have a cut-off at 0.1-1 TeV. This mostly comes from the requirement that the thermal abundance of dark matter not exceed the observed value. Thus thermal dark matter coupled with present data implies new physics most likely under 10 TeV.

Non-Decoupling MSSM Higgs Sector and Light Superpartners

In the ``non-decoupling'' region of the Higgs sector in MSSM, the heavier CP-even Higgs boson (H^0) is Standard-Model-like and close to the charged Higgs bosons (H^\pm) in mass, while other neutral Higgs bosons (h^0,A^0) are lighter and near the Z mass. This scenario is consistent with the current Higgs search limits, although the improved sensitivity for a light charged Higgs boson search t -> H^+ b may result in certain degree of tension. We demonstrate that it can pass the stringent flavor constraints, provided there are other light SUSY particles to contribute in the loop induced processes. In turn, the non-decoupling Higgs sector implies the existence of light (left-handed) stop, sbottom and Wino-like gauginos, with mass all below 250 GeV. These light super-partners can still escape the current SUSY searches at the LHC. Dedicated searches for soft decay products should be devised for the LHC experiments to improve the searching sensitivity. The ILC would be able to cover the full spectrum region. The solutions for the viable SUSY parameters result from subtle cancellations and are often missed by the generic multiple dimensional scans, highlighting the importance of theoretical guidance in search for such special cases.

Decoupling MSSM Higgs Sector and Heavy Higgs Decay

The decoupling limit in the MSSM Higgs sector is the most likely scenario in light of the Higgs discovery. This scenario is further constrained by MSSM Higgs search bounds and flavor observables. We perform a comprehensive scan of MSSM parameters and update the constraints on the decoupling MSSM Higgs sector in terms of 8 TeV LHC data. We highlight the effect of light SUSY spectrum in the heavy neutral Higgs decay in the decoupling limit. We find that the chargino and neutralino decay mode can reach at most 40% and 20% branching ratio, respectively. In particular, the invisible decay mode BR(H^0(A^0) -> \tildeχ^0_1\tildeχ^0_1) increases with increasing Bino LSP mass and is between 10%-15% (20%) for 30 \tilde{t}_1\tilde{t}_1^\ast and 60% for H^0/A^0 -> \tildeτ_1\tildeτ_2^\ast+\tildeτ_1^\ast\tildeτ_2. The branching fractions are less than 10% for H^0 -> h^0h^0 and 1% for A^0 -> h^0Z for m_A>400 GeV. The charged Higgs decays to neutralino plus chargino and sfermions with branching ratio as large as 40% and 60%, respectively. Moreover, the exclusion limit of leading MSSM Higgs search channel, namely gg,b\bar{b} -> H^0, A^0 -> tau^+ tau^-, is extrapolated to 14 TeV LHC with high luminosities. It turns out that the tau tau mode can essentially exclude regime with tanβ>20 for L=300 fb^{-1} and tanβ>15 for L=3000 fb^{-1}.

Singlet Dark Matter in Type II Two Higgs Doublet Model

Inspired by the dark matter searches in the low mass region, we study the Type II two Higgs doublet model with a light gauge singlet WIMP stabilized by a Z_2 symmetry. The real singlet is required to only couple to the non-Standard Model Higgs. We investigate singlet candidates with different spins as well as isospin violating effect. The parameter space favored by LHC data in two Higgs doublet model and hadronic uncertainties in WIMP-nucleon elastic scattering are also taken into account. We find only the scalar singlet in the isospin conserving case leads to a major overlap with the region of interests of most direct detection experiments.

My Brain is Full: When More Memory Helps

We consider the problem of finding good finite-horizon policies for POMDPs under the expected reward metric. The policies considered are {em free finite-memory policies with limited memory}; a policy is a mapping from the space of observation-memory pairs to the space of action-memeory pairs (the policy updates the memory as it goes), and the number of possible memory states is a parameter of the input to the policy-finding algorithms. The algorithms considered here are preliminary implementations of three search heuristics: local search, simulated annealing, and genetic algorithms. We compare their outcomes to each other and to the optimal policies for each instance. We compare run times of each policy and of a dynamic programming algorithm for POMDPs developed by Hansen that iteratively improves a finite-state controller --- the previous state of the art for finite memory policies. The value of the best policy can only improve as the amount of memory increases, up to the amount needed for an optimal finite-memory policy. Our most surprising finding is that more memory helps in another way: given more memory than is needed for an optimal policy, the algorithms are more likely to converge to optimal-valued policies.

Well-posedness of a Parabolic-hyperbolic Keller-Segel System in the Sobolev Space Framework

We study the global strong solutions to a 3-dimensional parabolic-hyperbolic Keller-Segel model with initial data close to a stable equilibrium with perturbations belonging to $L^2(\mathbb R^3)\times H^1(\mathbb{R}^3)$. We obtain global well-posedness and decay property. Furthermore, if the mean value of initial cell density is smaller than a suitabale constant, then the chemical concentration decays exponentially to zero as $t$ goes to infinity. Proofs of the main results are based on an application of Fourier analysis method to uniform estimates for a linearized parabolic-hyperbolic system and also based on the smoothing effect of the cell density as well as the damping effect of the chemical concentration.

Pair Production of MSSM Higgs Bosons in the Non-decoupling Region at the LHC

We consider the Higgs boson signals from pair production at the LHC within the framework of the MSSM in the non-decoupling (low-m_A) region. In light of the recent observation of a SM-like Higgs boson, we argue that the exploration for Higgs pair production at the LHC is a crucial next step to probe the MSSM Higgs sector. We emphasize that the production of H^\pm A^0 and H^{+}H^{-} depends only on the electroweak gauge couplings while all the leading Higgs production channels via gluon fusion, vector-boson fusion, and Higgsstrahlung depend on additional free Higgs sector parameters. In the non-decoupling region, the five MSSM Higgs bosons are all relatively light and pair production signals may be accessible. We find that at the 8 TeV LHC, a 5σsignal for H^\pm A^0, H^\pm h^0 -> τ^{\pm}νb\bar b and H^{+}H^{-} -> τ^{+}ντ^{-}νare achievable with an integrated luminosity of 7 (11) fb^{-1} and 24 (48) fb^{-1}, respectively for m_A=95 (130) GeV. At the 14 TeV LHC, a 5σsignal for these two channels would require as little as 4 (7) fb^{-1} and 10 (19) fb^{-1}, respectively.

Impact of LHC Searches on NLSP Top Squark and Gluino Mass

We explore the implications of 7 TeV LHC searches for a scenario in which one of the stops is the next-to lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP). The NLSP stop (\tilde{t}_1) is assumed to decay exclusively into neutralino and charm quark. We consider processes where the stops are pair produced together with a hard QCD jet. We also consider stop quarks from gluino decays, \tilde{g}\to t\tilde{t}_1^\ast+\bar{t}\tilde{t}_1. We show that the monojet ATLAS and CMS searches corresponding to 1 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity are sensitive to stop masses of up to 160 GeV, with the 20% neutralino-stop coannihilation region essentially ruled out for M_{\tilde{t}_1}\lesssim 140 GeV. The region M_{\tilde{t}_1}\lesssim 130 GeV is excluded with even relatively larger mass difference, M_{\tilde{t}_1}-M_{\tildeχ_1^0}\sim 40 GeV, by the multi-jets search. The b-jet and same-sign dilepton searches are sensitive to a heavier gluino because they only pick up gluino pair production events followed by top quarks decaying into b-jets and same-sign dileptons, respectively. We find that the LHC data places a lower limit on the gluino mass in this scenario of about 600 GeV (700 GeV) from b-jets (same-sign dileptons) searches.

Probing NLSP Top Squark from Heavy Gluino at the LHC

In this work we explore the 7 TeV LHC implication on light top squark (stop) and investigate discovery limits at both 8 and 14 TeV LHC using same-sign dilepton signature. We consider a simplified spectrum with gluino pair production followed by heavy gluino decay into on-shell stop and top quark in pair. The light stop is then assumed to uniquely decay into c\tildeχ_1^0, bW^+\tildeχ_1^0 or t\tildeχ_1^0. The same-sign dilepton search at 7 TeV LHC places a lower bound of about 800 GeV on the gluino mass in this scenario. We find that the 8 TeV LHC with 30 fb^{-1} luminosity can reach 960 (900) GeV, 1.2 (1.0) TeV and 1.3 (1.1) TeV of gluino mass for stop decay product of c\tildeχ_1^0, bW^+\tildeχ_1^0 and t\tildeχ_1^0 respectively, corresponding to 3 (5) σsignificance. The discovery limits of heavy gluino mass at the 14 TeV LHC with 100 fb^{-1} luminosity are 1.45 (1.35) TeV, 1.6 (1.55) TeV and 1.9 (1.68) TeV.

Stop-Neutralino Coannihilation in the Light of LHC

We employ the ATLAS search results for events containing jets and large missing transverse momentum, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1 fb^{-1}, to investigate the constrained minimal supersymmetric model (CMSSM) with b-τYukawa coupling unification. In this scenario, one of the stops is the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP), which co-annihilates with the lightest (LSP) neutralino to yield the desired dark matter relic abundance. The NLSP stop, here taken to be lighter than the top quark, is slightly (<~ 20%-30%) heavier than the LSP neutralino, and it primarily decays into the LSP and a charm quark. We find that the multi-jets and monojet ATLAS searches are sensitive to this scenario if the stop pair production is accompanied by a hard QCD jet. The excluded limit for the NLSP stop mass from the ATLAS data can reach 160 GeV in the coannihilation region, with mass below 140 GeV essentially excluded. A significant region of the parameter space corresponding to large m_0 values, 8 TeV<~ m_0<~ 16 TeV, is excluded by our analysis. For LSP neutralino mass ~ 100 GeV, the LHC constraints in some cases on the spin-dependent (spin-independent) neutralino-nucleon cross section are significantly more stringent than the current and expected bounds from Xenon, CDMS and IceCube.

LHC Constraints on NLSP Gluino and Dark Matter Neutralino in Yukawa Unified Models

The ATLAS experiment has recently presented its search results for final states containing jets and/or b-jet(s) and missing transverse momentum, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 165 pb^{-1}. We employ this data to constrain a class of supersymmetric SU(4)_c X SU(2)_L X SU(2)_R models with t-b-τYukawa unification, in which the gluino is the next to lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP). The NLSP gluino is slightly (~10-30%) heavier than the the LSP dark matter neutralino, and it primarily decays into the latter and a quark-antiquark pair or gluon. We find that NLSP gluino masses below ~300 GeV are excluded by the ATLAS data. For LSP neutralino mass ~200-300 GeV and μ>0, where μis the coefficient of the MSSM Higgs bilinear term, the LHC constraints in some cases on the spin-dependent (spin-independent) neutralino-nucleon cross section are significantly more stringent than the expected bounds from IceCube DeepCore (Xenon 1T/SuperCDMS). For μ<0, this also holds for the spin-dependent cross sections.

Searching for NLSP Sbottom at the LHC

We study the collider phenomenology of sbottom-bino co-annihilation scenario at both the 7 TeV and 14 TeV LHC. This co-annihilation scenario requires that the NLSP sbottom and LSP bino masses are apart by no more than about 20% or so, and for M_{\tilde{b}_1}>M_b+M_{\tildeχ_1^0}, the sbottom decays exclusively into b+\tildeχ_1^0. We propose a search for sbottom pairs through b\bar{b} plus missing energy. By scanning the mass parameters M_{\tilde{b}_1} and M_{\tildeχ_1^0}, we investigate the discovery limits of sbottom and bino in the M_{\tilde{b}_1}-M_{\tildeχ_1^0} plane with at least 5σsignificance at the LHC, for varying integrated luminosities. It is shown that with at least 5 fb^{-1} luminosity, the 7 TeV LHC can explore a narrow region satisfying the 20% co-annihilation condition. For the 14 TeV LHC with 10 (100) fb^{-1} luminosity, the discovery limit of M_{\tilde{b}_1} is 360 (570) GeV.

Scalar Dark Matter Search at the LHC through FCNC Top Decay

We discuss an extended standard model electroweak sector which contains a stable scalar dark matter particle, the D boson. To search for the D boson at the LHC we exploit the flavor-changing neutral current (FCNC) top quark decay, t->c D D, mediated by the lightest standard model-like Higgs h^0 in a two Higgs doublet model framework. The branching ratio for t->c D D in this case can be as high as 10^{-3}, after taking into account constraints arising from the D boson relic abundance. With an integrated luminosity of 10 (100) fb^{-1}, the 14 TeV LHC can explore values of this branching ratio that are one (two) order of magnitude smaller in t\bar{t} production with t\bar{t}\to c \bar{b} \ell^-(\bar{c}b\ell^+)+missing E_T. For a D boson mass <60 GeV, m_{h^0}< 2 M_Z, 10 fb^{-1} luminosity and a branching ratio BR(t->cDD)~10^{-4}, the estimated number of signal events at the 14 TeV LHC is of order 80.
