LoCuSS: Subaru Weak Lensing Study of 30 Galaxy Clusters

(Abridged) We use Subaru data to conduct a detailed weak-lensing study of the dark matter distribution in a sample of 30 X-ray luminous galaxy clusters at 0.15<z<0.3. A weak-lensing signal is detected at high statistical significance in each cluster, the total detection S/N ranging from 5 to 13. In this paper we concentrate on fitting spherical models to the tangential distortion profiles of the clusters. When the models are fitted to the clusters individually, we are unable to discriminate statistically between SIS and NFW models. However when the tangential distortion profiles of the individual clusters are combined, and models fitted to the stacked profile, the SIS model is rejected at 6- and 11-sigma, respectively, for low- and high-mass bins. We also use the individual cluster NFW model fits to investigate the relationship between cluster mass (M_vir) and concentration (c_vir), finding an anti-correlation of c_vir and M_vir. The best-fit c_vir-M_vir relation is: c_vir(M_vir) propto M_vir^{-alpha} with alpha=0.41+/-0.19 -- i.e. a non-zero slope is detected at 2sigma significance. We then investigate the optimal radius within which to measure cluster mass, finding that the typical fractional errors are improved to sigma(M_Delta)/M_Delta ~ 0.1-0.2 for cluster masses at higher over-densities Delta=500-2000, from 0.2-0.3 for the virial over-density (~110). Further comparisons between mass measurements based on spherical model fitting and the model-independent aperture mass method reveal that the 2D aperture mass enclosed within a cylinder of a given aperture radius is systematically greater than the 3D spherical mass obtained from NFW model fitting: M_2D/M_3D= 1.34 and 1.40 for Delta=500 and 110, respectively. The amplitude of this effect agrees well with that predicted by integrating the NFW model along the line-of-sight.

Elliptical Weighted HOLICs for Weak Lensing Shear Measurement. part1:Definitions and isotropic PSF correction

We develop a new method to estimate gravitational shear by adopting an elliptical weight function to measure background galaxy images. In doing so, we introduce a new concept of "zero plane" which is an imaginal source plane where shapes of all sources are perfect circles, and regard the intrinsic shear as the result of an imaginal lensing distortion. This makes the relation between the observed shear, the intrinsic shear and lensing distortion more simple and thus higher-order calculation more easy. The elliptical weight function allows us to measure the mutiplemoment of shape of background galaxies more precisely by weighting highly to brighter parts of image and moreover to reduce systematic error due to insufficient expansion of the weight function in the original approach of KSB. Point Spread Function(PSF) correction in E-HOLICs methods becomes more complicated than those in KSB methods. In this paper we studied isotropic PSF correction in detail. By adopting the lensing distortion as the ellipticity of the weight function, we are able to show that the shear estimation in E-HOLICs method reduces to solve a polynomial in the absolute magnitude of the distortion. We compare the systematic errors between our approach and KSB using STEP2 simulation. It is confirmed that KSB method overestimate the input shear for images with large ellipticities, and E-HOLICs correctly estimate the input shear even for such images. Anisotropic PSF correction and analysis of real data will be presented in forthcoming paper.

LoCuSS: Calibrating Mass-Observable Scaling Relations for Cluster Cosmology with Subaru Weak Lensing Observations

We present a joint weak-lensing/X-ray study of galaxy cluster mass-observable scaling relations, motivated by the critical importance of accurate calibration of mass proxies for future X-ray missions, including eROSITA. We use a sample of 12 clusters at z\simeq0.2 that we have observed with Subaru and XMM-Newton to construct relationships between the weak-lensing mass (M), and three X-ray observables: gas temperature (T), gas mass (Mgas), and quasi-integrated gas pressure (Yx) at overdensities of Δ=2500, 1000, and 500 with respect to the critical density. We find that Mgas at Δ\le1000 appears to be the most promising mass proxy of the three, because it has the lowest intrinsic scatter in mass at fixed observable: σ_lnM\simeq0.1, independent of cluster dynamical state. The scatter in mass at fixed T and Yx is a factor of \sim2-3 larger than at fixed Mgas, which are indicative of the structural segregation that we find in the M-T and M-Yx relationships. Undisturbed clusters are found to be \sim40% and \sim20% more massive than disturbed clusters at fixed T and Yx respectively at \sim2σsignificance. In particular, A1914 - a well-known merging cluster - significantly increases the scatter and lowers the the normalization of the relation for disturbed clusters. We also investigated the covariance between intrinsic scatter in M-Mgas and M-T relations, finding that they are positively correlated. This contradicts the adaptive mesh refinement simulations that motivated the idea that Yx may be a low scatter mass proxy, and agrees with more recent smoothed particle hydrodynamic simulations based on the Millennium Simulation. We also propose a method to identify a robust mass proxy based on principal component analysis. The statistical precision of our results are limited by the small sample size and the presence of the extreme merging cluster in our sample.

Weak Lensing Mass Measurements of Substructures in COMA Cluster with Subaru/Suprime-Cam

We obtain the projected mass distributions for two Subaru/Suprime-Cam fields in the southwest region (r\simlt 60') of the Coma cluster (z=0.0236) by weak lensing analysis and detect eight subclump candidates. We quantify the contribution of background large-scale structure (LSS) on the projected mass distributions using SDSS multi-bands and photometric data, under the assumption of mass-to-light ratio for field galaxies. We find that one of eight subclump candidates, which is not associated with any member galaxies, is significantly affected by LSS lensing. The mean projected mass for seven subclumps extracted from the main cluster potential is = (5.06\pm1.30)10^12h^-1 M_sun after a LSS correction. A tangential distortion profile over an ensemble of subclumps is well described by a truncated singular-isothermal sphere model and a truncated NFW model. A typical truncated radius of subclumps, r_t\simeq 35 h^-1 kpc, is derived without assuming any relations between mass and light for member galaxies. The radius coincides well with the tidal radius, \sim42 h^-1 kpc, of the gravitational force of the main cluster. Taking into account the incompleteness of data area, a projection effect and spurious lensing peaks, it is expected that mass of cluster substructures account for 19 percent of the virial mass, with 13 percent statistical error. The mass fraction of cluster substructures is in rough agreement with numerical simulations.

A method to measure a relative transverse velocity of source-lens-observer system using gravitational lensing of gravitational waves

Gravitational waves propagate along null geodesics like light rays in the geometrical optics approximation, and they may have a chance to suffer from gravitational lensing by intervening objects, as is the case for electromagnetic waves. Long wavelength of gravitational waves and compactness of possible sources may enable us to extract information in the interference among the lensed images. We point out that the interference term contains information of relative transverse velocity of the source-lens-observer system, which may be obtained by possible future space-borne gravitational wave detectors such as BBO/DECIGO.

Distance-Redshift Relation in a Realistic Inhomogeneous Universe

We investigate the distance-redshift relation in a realistic inhomogeneous universe where the mass distribution is described by the mass function of Sheth and Tormen. It is found that the derived distance deviates systematically from the standard distance up to 10% depending on the choice of the lowest halo mass in which baryonic matter condensed to form luminous object such as galaxies. Remarkably the derived distance is well approximated by the Dyer-Roeder distance if we choose the clumpiness parameter αcalculated by our model. We also discuss the effect of inhomogeneities in the determination of dark energy parameter in the supernovae observation, and find that this effect must be taken into account for the future high redshift supernovae observation.

Appearance of classical Mixmaster Universe from the No-Boundary Quantum State

We investigate the appearance of the classical anisotropic universe from the no-boundary quantum state according to the prescription proposed by Hartle, Hawking and Hertog. Our model is homogeneous, anisotropic, closed universes with a minimally coupled scalar field and cosmological constant. We found that there are an ensemble of classical Lorentzian histories with anisotropies and experience inflationary expansion at late time, and the probability of histories with anisotropies are lower than isotropic histories. Thus the no-boundary condition may be able to explain the emergence of our universe. If the classical late time histories are extended back, some become singular by the existence of initial anisotropies with large accelerations. However we do not find any chaotic behavior of anisotropies near the initial singularity.

A New Method for measuring Weak Gravitational Lensing Shear using Higher Order Spin-2 HOLICs

We investigate the possibility to use higher order moments of gravitational lensed images in the weak lensing analysis. For this purpose we employ spin-2 component of HOLICs(Higher Order Lensing Characteristics) developed by us. We test the weak lensing analysis with spin-2 HOLICs using actual, ground based Subaru observations of the massive galaxy cluster A1689(z=0.183). It turns out that spin-2 HOLICs of order up to 8 are sufficiently applicable for weak lensing analysis after correcting PSF anisotropy as well as isotropic PSF smearing.

A Method for Weak Lensing Flexion Analysis by the HOLICs Moment Approach

We have developed a method for measuring higher-order weak lensing distortions of faint background galaxies, namely the weak gravitational flexion, by fully extending the Kaiser, Squires & Broadhurst method to include higher-order lensing image characteristics (HOLICs) introduced by Okura, Umetsu, & Futamase. We take into account explicitly the weight function in calculations of noisy shape moments and the effect of higher-order PSF anisotropy, as well as isotropic PSF smearing. Our HOLICs formalism allows accurate measurements of flexion from practical observational data in the presence of non-circular, anisotropic PSF. We test our method using mock observations of simulated galaxy images and actual, ground-based Subaru observations of the massive galaxy cluster A1689 ($z=0.183$). From the high-precision measurements of spin-1 first flexion, we obtain a high-resolution mass map in the central region of A1689. The reconstructed mass map shows a bimodal feature in the central $4'\times 4'$ region of the cluster. The major, pronounced peak is associated with the brightest cluster galaxy and central cluster members, while the secondary mass peak is associated with a local concentration of bright galaxies. The refined, high-resolution mass map of A1689 demonstrates the power of the generalized weak lensing analysis techniques for quantitative and accurate measurements of the weak gravitational lensing signal.

Validity of strong lensing statistics for constraints on the galaxy evolution model

We examine the usefulness of the strong lensing statistics to constrain the evolution of the number density of lensing galaxies by adopting the values of the cosmological parameters determined by recent WMAP observation. For this purpose, we employ the lens-redshift test proposed by Kochanek (1992) and constrain the parameters in two evolution models, simple power-law model characterized by the power law indexes $nu_{n}$ and $ν_{v}$ and the evolution model by Mitchell et al. (2005) based on CDM structure formation scenario. We use the well-defined lens sample from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and this is similarly sized samples used in the previous studies. Furthermore, we adopt the velocity dispersion function of early-type galaxies based on SDSS DR1 and DR5. It turns out that the indexes of power-law model are consistent with the previous studies, thus our results indicate the mild evolution in the number and velocity dispersion of early-type galaxies out to z = 1. However we found that the values for p and q used by Mitchell et al. are inconsistent with the presently available observational data. More complete sample is necessary to withdraw more realistic determination on these parameters.

A New Measure for Weak Lensing Flexion

We study a possibility to use the octopole moment of gravitationally lensed images as a direct measure of the third-order weak gravitational lensing effect, or the gravitational flexion. It turns out that there is a natural relation between flexion and certain combinations of octopole/higher-multipole moments which we call the Higher Order Lensing Image's Characteristics (HOLICs). This will allow one to measure directly flexion from observable octopole and higher-multipole moments of background images. We show based on simulated observations how the use of HOLICs can improve the accuracy and resolution of a reconstructed mass map, in which we assume Gaussian uncertainties in the shape measurements estimated using deep i'-band data of blank fields observed with Suprime-Cam on the Subaru telescope.

A Phantom does not Result from a Backreaction

The backreaction of nonlinear inhomogeneities to the cosmic expansion is analyzed in the framework of general relativity with a cosmological constant. By defining the spatially averaged matter energy density, we find that the cosmological constant induces a new type of backreaction whose equation of state is $p=-4/3 ρ$, where $ρ$ and $p$ are the effective energy density and effective pressure of the backreaction in the averaged Friedmann universe. However, the effective density is negative, and thus it decreases the acceleration caused by the cosmological constant.

Cosmology with High-redshift Galaxy Survey: Neutrino Mass and Inflation

(abridged) High-z galaxy redshift surveys open up exciting possibilities for precision determinations of neutrino masses and inflationary models. The high-z surveys are more useful for cosmology than low-z ones owing to much weaker non-linearities in matter clustering, redshift-space distortion and galaxy bias. We can then utilize the two-dimensional information of the linear power spectrum in angular and redshift space to measure the scale-dependent suppression of matter clustering due to neutrino free-streaming as well as the shape of the primordial power spectrum. To illustrate capabilities of high-z surveys for constraining neutrino masses and the primordial power spectrum, we compare three future redshift surveys covering 300 square degrees at 0.5<z<2, 2<z<4, and 3.5<z<6.5. We find that, combined with the cosmic microwave background data expected from the Planck satellite, these surveys allow precision determination of the total neutrino mass with the projected errors of sigma(m_nu)=0.059, 0.043, and 0.025 eV, respectively, thus yielding a positive detection of the neutrino mass rather than an upper limit, as sigma(m_nu) is smaller than the lower limits to the neutrino masses implied from the neutrino oscillation experiments. The accuracies of constraining the tilt and running index of the primordial power spectrum, sigma(n_s)=(3.8, 3.7, 3.0)x10^-3, and sigma(alpha_s)=(5.9, 5.7, 2.4)x10^-3, respectively, are smaller than the current uncertainties by more than an order of magnitude, which will allow us to discriminate between candidate inflationary models. In particular, the error on alpha_s from the highest redshift survey is not very far away from the prediction of a class of simple inflationary models driven by a massive scalar field with self-coupling, alpha_s=-(0.8-1.2)x10^-3.

Toward a No-Go Theorem for an Accelerating Universe through a Nonlinear Backreaction

The backreaction of nonlinear inhomogeneities to the cosmic expansion is re-analyzed in the framework of general relativity. Apparent discrepancies regarding the effect of the nonlinear backreaction, which exist among the results of previous works in different gauges, are resolved. By defining the spatially averaged matter energy density as a conserved quantity in the large comoving volume, it is shown that the nonlinear backreaction neither accelerates nor decelerates the cosmic expansion in a matter-dominated universe. The present result in the Newtonian gauge is consistent with the previous results obtained in the comoving synchronous gauge. Although our work does not give a complete proof, it strongly suggests the following no-go theorem: No cosmic acceleration occurs as a result of the nonlinear backreaction via averaging.

Detection of Dark Matter Concentrations in the Field of Cl 1604+4304 from Weak Lensing Analysis

We present a weak-lensing analysis of a region around the galaxy cluster Cl 1604+4304 (z=0.897) on the basis of the deep observations with the HST/WFPC2. We apply a variant of Schneider's aperture mass technique to the observed WFPC2 field and obtain the distribution of weak-lensing signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio within the field. The resulting S/N map reveals a clear pronounced peak located about 1.7 arcmin (850h_{50}^{-1} kpc at z=0.897) southwest of the second peak associated with the optical cluster center determined from the dynamical analysis of Postman et al. A non-linear finite-field inversion method has been used to reconstruct the projected mass distribution from the observed shear field. The reconstructed mass map shows a super-critical feature at the location of the S/N peak as well as in the cluster central region. Assuming the redshift distribution of field galaxies, we obtain the total mass in the observed field to be 1.0 h_{50}^{-1} 10^{15} M_sun for =1.0. The estimated mass within a circular aperture of radius 280h_{50}^{-1} kpc centered on the dark clump is 2.4h_{50}^{-1} 10^{14} M_sun. We have confirmed the existence of the ` dark ' mass concentration from another deep HST observation with a slightly different ~20 arcsec pointing.

Discovery of a Strongly Lensed Galaxy at z=3.9 behind a z=0.83 Galaxy Cluster

We report the discovery and spectroscopic confirmation of three gravitationally-lensed images of a galaxy at z=3.9 in the background of a distant, rich cluster of galaxies at z=0.83, on the basis of observations with Faint Object Camera And Spectrograph (FOCAS) on the Subaru telescope. We construct a simple lens model of the cluster mass distribution based on Jee et al.'s weak lensing mass estimates from deep, high-resolution images by Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on the Hubble Space Telescope. The lens model can account simultaneously for the observed image configuration and the flux ratio of the closer pair located close to the critical curve. The parities of the three images are also consistent with the lensing hypothesis. Since this galaxy is apparently bright (i'_{AB} \sim 23.7) for its redshift due to the magnification, it serves as a good high redshift target on which we can make extensive and detailed studies based on multi-wavelength imaging and spectroscopy.
