The Surprisingly Steep Mass Profile of Abell 1689, from a Lensing Analysis of Subaru Images

Subaru observations of A1689 (z=0.183) are used to derive an accurate, model-independent mass profile for the entire cluster, r<2 Mpc/h, by combining magnification bias and distortion measurements. The projected mass profile steepens quickly with increasing radius, falling away to zero at r~1.0 Mpc/h, well short of the anticipated virial radius. Our profile accurately matches onto the inner profile, r<200 kpc/h, derived from deep HST/ACS images. The combined ACS and Subaru information is well fitted by an NFW profile with virial mass, (1.93 \pm 0.20)10^15 M_sun, and surprisingly high concentration, c_vir=13.7^{+1.4}_{-1.1}, significantly larger than theoretically expected (c_vir~4), corresponding to a relatively steep overall profile. A slightly better fit is achieved with a steep power-law model that has its 2D logarithmic slope -3 and core radius theta_c~1.7' (r_c~210 kpc/h), whereas an isothermal profile is strongly rejected. These results are based on a reliable sample of background galaxies selected to be redder than the cluster E/S0 sequence. By including the faint blue galaxy population a much smaller distortion signal is found, demonstrating that blue cluster members significantly dilute the true signal for r~400 kpc/h. This contamination is likely to affect most weak lensing results to date.

Numerical analysis of quasinormal modes in nearly extremal Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetimes

We calculate high-order quasinormal modes with large imaginary frequencies for electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations in nearly extremal Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetimes. Our results show that for low-order quasinormal modes, the analytical approximation formula in the extremal limit derived by Cardoso and Lemos is a quite good approximation for the quasinormal frequencies as long as the model parameter $r_1κ_1$ is small enough, where $r_1$ and $κ_1$ are the black hole horizon radius and the surface gravity, respectively. For high-order quasinormal modes, to which corresponds quasinormal frequencies with large imaginary parts, on the other hand, this formula becomes inaccurate even for small values of $r_1κ_1$. We also find that the real parts of the quasinormal frequencies have oscillating behaviors in the limit of highly damped modes, which are similar to those observed in the case of a Reissner-Nordstr{\" o}m black hole. The amplitude of oscillating ${\rm Re(ω)}$ as a function of ${\rm Im}(ω)$ approaches a non-zero constant value for gravitational perturbations and zero for electromagnetic perturbations in the limit of highly damped modes, where $ω$ denotes the quasinormal frequency. This means that for gravitational perturbations, the real part of quasinormal modes of the nearly extremal Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime appears not to approach any constant value in the limit of highly damped modes. On the other hand, for electromagnetic perturbations, the real part of frequency seems to go to zero in the limit.

New derivation of a third post-Newtonian equation of motion for relativistic compact binaries without ambiguity

A third post-Newtonian (3 PN) equation of motion for an inspiralling binary consisting of two spherical compact stars with strong internal gravity is derived under harmonic coordinate condition using the strong field point particle limit. The equation of motion is complete in a sense that it is Lorentz invariant in the post-Newtonian perturbative sense, admits conserved energy of the orbital motion, and is unambiguous, that is, with no undetermined coefficient. In this paper, we show explicit expressions of the 3 PN equation of motion and an energy of the binary orbital motion in case of the circular orbit (neglecting the 2.5 PN radiation reaction effect) and in the center of the mass frame. It is argued that the 3 PN equation of motion we obtained is physically unambiguous. Full details will be reported elsewhere.

The topology of weak lensing field in the neighborhood of MS1054-03

We report the first measurement of genus curves for the two-dimensional mass map in the neighborhood of rich, X-ray luminous galaxy cluster MS1054-03 at z=0.83, reconstructed from weak lensing data obtained by Suprime-Cam on the prime focus of 8.2m Subaru telescope. We find that the genus curve measured in the whole survey field deviates from that expected from a random Gaussian field. We show that this non-Gaussianity is induced by the rich cluster in this region, and that the genus curve for the region without the cluster is consistent with the prediction for a random Gaussian field. The results demonstrate the feasibility of the genus statistics to examine the non-Gaussianity due to the large scale structures and to probe the statistical properties of the large scale clustering.

Subaru Spectroscopy of the Gravitational Lens HST 14176+5226: Implications for a Large Cosmological Constan

We present new optical spectroscopy of the lens elliptical galax in the ``Einstein Cross'' lens system HST 14176+5226, using the Faint Object Camera and Spectrograph (FOCAS) of the Subaru t Our spectroscopic observations are aimed at measuring the stella dispersion of the lens galaxy, located at high redshift of z_L= as an important component to lens models. We have measured this 230 +- 14 km s^{-1} (1 sigma) inside 0.35 effective radi based on the comparison between the observed galaxy spectrum and templates of three G-K giants by means of the Fourier cross-corr To extract the significance of this information on the geometry universe which also affects the lensing of the background image, to fit three different lens models to the available data of the Provided that the lens galaxy has the structural and dynamical p (i.e., its radial density profile, core radius, and velocity ani similar to those of local elliptical galaxies, we calculate the function for the simultaneous reproduction of both the observed and newly measured velocity dispersion of the lens. Although the interval depends rather sensitively on the adopted lens models o parameters, our experiments suggest the larger likelihood for a cosmological constant, Omega_Lambda: formal 1 sigma lower Omega_Lambda in the flat universe ranges 0.73 to 0.97, where lower limit is basically unavailable. This method for determinin model is thus dependent on lens models but is insensitive to oth ambiguities, such as the dust absorption or the evolutionary eff galaxies. Exploring spectroscopic observations of more lens gala redshift may minimize the model uncertainties and thus place a m constraint on Omega_Lambda.

Feasibility of Probing Dark Energy with Strong Gravitational Lensing Systems -- Fisher-Matrix Approach --

We assess the feasibility of probing dark energy with strong gravitational lensing systems. The capability of the method, which depends on the accuracy with which the lensing systems are modeled, is quantitatively investigated using the Fisher-matrix formalism. We show that this method might place useful constraints on the density parameter and the redshift evolution of the dark energy by combining it with a constraint from supernova measurements. For this purpose, the lens potential needs to be precisely reconstructed. We determine the required quality of data. We also briefly discuss the optimal strategy to constrain the cosmological parameters using gravitational lensing systems.

R-mode Instability of Slowly Rotating Non-isentropic Relativistic Stars

We investigate properties of $r$-mode instability in slowly rotating relativistic polytropes. Inside the star slow rotation and low frequency formalism that was mainly developed by Kojima is employed to study axial oscillations restored by Coriolis force. At the stellar surface, in order to take account of gravitational radiation reaction effect, we use a near-zone boundary condition instead of the usually imposed boundary condition for asymptotically flat spacetime. Due to the boundary condition, complex frequencies whose imaginary part represents secular instability are obtained for discrete $r$-mode oscillations in some polytropic models. It is found that such discrete $r$-mode solutions can be obtained only for some restricted polytropic models. Basic properties of the solutions are similar to those obtained by imposing the boundary condition for asymptotically flat spacetime. Our results suggest that existence of a continuous part of spectrum cannot be avoided even when its frequency becomes complex due to the emission of gravitational radiation.

On the abundance of collapsed objects

The redshift dependence of the abundance of collapsed objects places strong constraints on cosmological models of structure formation. We apply a recently proposed model describing the anisotropic collapse of inhomogeneous spatial domains. Compared with the spherical top-hat model, this generic model leads to significantly more collapsed objects at high redshifts: at redshift one and on the scale of rich clusters a factor of 65. Furthermore, for a fixed normalization of the initial fluctuation spectrum (σ_8=1), we predict four times as much presently collapsed objects on the mass-scale of rich clusters within the standard CDM cosmogony, compared to the spherical collapse.

Possible Method to Reconstruct the Cosmic Equation of State from Strong Gravitational Lensing Systems

A possible method to reconstruct the cosmic equation of state using strong gravitational lensing systems is proposed. The feasibility of the method is investigated by carrying out the reconstruction on the basis of a simple Monte-Carlo simulation. We show that the method can work and that the cosmic equation of state $w(z)$ can be determined within errors of $Δw\sim \pm0.1$ -- $\pm0.2$ when a sufficiently large number of lensing systems ($N\sim 20$) for $z\simlt 1$ are precisely measured. Statistics of lensed sources in a wide and deep survey like the SDSS are also briefly discussed.

Implication of Omega_m through the Morphological Analysis of Weak Lensing Fields

We apply the morphological descriptions of two-dimensional contour map, the so-called Minkowski functionals (the area fraction, circumference, and Euler characteristics), to the convergence field $κ(\bmθ)$ of the large-scale structure reconstructed from the shear map produced by the ray-tracing simulations. The perturbation theory of structure formation has suggested that the non-Gaussian features on the Minkowski functionals with respect to the threshold in the weakly nonlinear regime are induced by the three skewness parameters of $κ$ that are sensitive to the density parameter of matter, $Ω_{\rm m}$. We show that, in the absence of noise due to the intrinsic ellipticities of source galaxies with which the perturbation theory results can be recovered, the accuracy of $Ω_{\rm m}$ determination is improved by $\sim 20%$ using the Minkowski functionals compared to the conventional method of using the direct measure of skewness.

Possible measurement of Quintessence and density parameter using strong gravitational lensing events

We propose a possible measurement of the time variability of the vacuum energy using strong gravitational lensing events. As an example we take an Einstein cross lens HST 14176+5226 and demonstrate that the measurement of the velocity dispersion with the accuracy of $\pm$ 5 km/sec will have a chance to determine the time dependence of the vacuum energy as well as the density parameter with the accuracy of order 0.1 if one fixes the lens model.

Equation of motion for relativistic compact binaries with the strong field point particle limit : the second and half post-Newtonian order

We study the equation of motion appropriate to an inspiralling binary star system whose constituent stars have strong internal gravity. We use the post-Newtonian approximation with the strong field point particle limit by which we can introduce into general relativity a notion of a point-like particle with strong internal gravity without using Dirac delta distribution. Besides this limit, to deal with strong internal gravity we express the equation of motion in surface integral forms and calculate these integrals explicitly. As a result we obtain the equation of motion for a binary of compact bodies accurate through the second and half post-Newtonian (2.5 PN) order. This equation is derived in the harmonic coordinate. Our resulting equation perfectly agrees with Damour and Deruelle 2.5 PN equation of motion. Hence it is found that the 2.5 PN equation of motion is applicable to a relativistic compact binary.

Effects of weak lensing on the topology of CMB maps

We investigate the non-Gaussian signatures in Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) maps induced by the intervening large-scale structure through weak lensing. In order to measure the deviation from the Gaussian behavior of the intrinsic temperature anisotropies, we use a family of three morphological descriptors, the so-called Minkowski functionals. We show analytically how these quantities depend on the temperature threshold, and compare the results to numerical experiments including the instrumental effects of Planck. Minkowski functionals can directly measure the statistical properties of the displacement field and hence provide useful constraints on large-scale structure formation in the past.

Number Count of Peaks in the CMB Map

We investigate the dependence of cosmological parameters on the number count of peaks (local maxima and minima) in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) sky. The peak statistics contains the whole information of acoustic oscillations in the angular power spectrum $C_l$ over $l$-space and thus it can place complementary constraints on the cosmological parameters to those obtained from measurements of $C_l$. Based on the instrumental specifications of Planck, we find that the number count of peaks can provide new constraints on the combination of the matter density $Ω_{\rm m}$ and the Hubble parameter $h$ approximately scaled as $Ω_{\rm m} h^{-4.9}$ for a flat $Λ$CDM model with $Ω_{m}=0.3$ and $h=0.7$. Therefore, we suggest that combining it with the constraints from $C_l$ scaled as $Ω_{m}h^{3.8}$ (or commonly $Ω_{\rm m}h^2$) can potentially determine $Ω_{\rm m}$ or equivalently solve the cosmic degeneracy by the CMB data alone.

Detectability of Gravitational Lensing Effect on the Two-point Correlation Function of Hotspots in the CMB maps

We present quantitative investigations of the weak lensing effect on the two-point correlation functions of local maxima (hotspots), $\xipk(θ)$, in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) maps. The lensing effect depends on the projected mass fluctuations between today and the redshift $z_{\rm rec}\approx1100$. If adopting the Gaussian assumption for the primordial temperature fluctuations field, the peak statistics can provide an additional information about the intrinsic distribution of hotspots that those pairs have some characteristic separation angles. The weak lensing then redistributes hotspots in the observed CMB maps from the intrinsic distribution and consequently imprints non-Gaussian signatures onto $\xipk(θ)$. Especially, since the intrinsic $\xipk(θ)$ has a pronounced depression feature around the angular scale of $θ\approx 70'$ for a flat universe, the weak lensing induces a large smoothing at the scale. We show that the lensing signature therefore has an advantage to effectively probe mass fluctuations with large wavelength modes around $λ\approx 50 h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$. To reveal the detectability, we performed numerical experiments with specifications of {\em MAP} and {\em Planck Surveyor} including the instrumental effects of beam smoothing and detector noise. It is then found that our method can successfully provide constraints on amplitude of the mass fluctuations and cosmological parameters in a flat universe with and without cosmological constant, provided that we use maps with 65% sky coverage expected from Planck.

Gravitational Lensing Effect on the Two-point Correlation of Hotspots in the Cosmic Microwave Background

We investigate the weak gravitational lensing effect due to the large-scale structure of the universe on two-point correlations of local maxima ({\em hotspots}) in the 2D sky map of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy. According to the Gaussian random statistics as most inflationary scenarios predict, the hotspots are discretely distributed with some {\em characteristic} angular separations on the last scattering surface owing to oscillations of the CMB angular power spectrum. The weak lensing then causes pairs of hotspots which are separated with the characteristic scale to be observed with various separations. We found that the lensing fairly smoothes the oscillatory features of the two-point correlation function of hotspots. This indicates that the hotspots correlations can be a new statistical tool for measuring shape and normalization of the power spectrum of matter fluctuations from the lensing signatures.

Equation of motion for relativistic compact binaries with the strong field point particle limit : Formulation, the first post-Newtonian and multipole terms

We derive the equation of motion for the relativistic compact binaries in the post-Newtonian approximation taking explicitly their strong internal gravity into account. For this purpose we adopt the method of the point particle limit where the equation of motion is expressed in terms of the surface integrals. We examine carefully the behavior of the surface integrals in the derivation. As a result, we obtain the Einstein-Infeld-Hoffman equation of motion at the first post-Newtonian (1PN) order, and a part of the 2PN order which depends on the quadrupole moments and the spins of component stars. Hence, it is found that the equation of motion in the post-Newtonian approximation is valid for the compact binaries by a suitable definition of the mass, spin and quadrupole moment.

Cluster Mass Reconstruction by a Weak Shear Field

The tidal gravitational field of galaxy clusters causes a coherent distortion of the images of background sources. Since the distribution of image distortions, namely the shear field, traces the local gravitational potential of a deflector, it can be used to reconstruct the two-dimensional mass distribution of clusters of galaxies. Moreover, the shear field can provide unique information on the redshift distribution of high-redshift galaxies. In this review we summarize recently-developed parameter-free methods of cluster-mass reconstruction based on the shear field, and we apply a mass-reconstruction method to the cluster Abell 370 at redshift 0.375.
