Site-Order Optimization in the Density Matrix Renormalization Group via Multi-Site Rearrangement

In the approaches based on matrix-product states (MPSs), such as the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method, the ordering of the sites crucially affects the computational accuracy. We investigate the performance of an algorithm that searches for the optimal site order by iterative local site rearrangement. We improve the algorithm by expanding the range of site rearrangement and apply it to a one-dimensional quantum Heisenberg model with random site permutation. The results indicate that increasing the range of the site rearrangement significantly improves the computational accuracy of the DMRG method. In particular, increasing the rearrangement range from two to three sites reduces the average relative error in the ground-state energy by 65% to 94% in the cases we tested. We also discuss the computational cost of the algorithm and its application as a preprocessing for MPS-based calculations.

Correlation functions at the topological quantum phase transition in the S=1 XXZ chain with single-ion anisotropy

We study the one-dimensional S=1 XXZ spin model with single-ion anisotropy. It is known that at the transition points between the Haldane and large-D phases, the model exhibits a quantum criticality described by the Gaussian theory, i.e., a conformal field theory with the central charge c=1. Using the bosonization approach, we investigate various correlation functions at the phase transition and derive their asymptotic forms. This allows us to clarify their peculiar behavior: the longitudinal (transverse) two-point spin correlation function has components that decay algebraically only in the uniform (staggered) sector. These theoretical predictions are verified by the numerical calculations using the density-matrix renormalization group method. The effect of weak bond alternation on the critical ground state at the phase transition is also discussed. It is shown that the bond alternation induces the missing power-law components in the correlation functions.

Tree-Graph Based Construction of Quantum Spin Models with Exact Ground State

We propose a protocol to generate an antiferromagnetic S=1/2 Heisenberg model with the exact ground state based on a tree graph. The generated model has a correspondence with a tree graph and possesses the product state of singlet dimers as its unique ground state. A procedure for constructing a model with exact, massively degenerate ground states is also introduced.

TTNOpt: Tree tensor network package for high-rank tensor compression

We have developed TTNOpt, a software package that utilizes tree tensor networks (TTNs) for quantum spin systems and high-dimensional data analysis. TTNOpt provides efficient and powerful TTN computations by locally optimizing the network structure, guided by the entanglement pattern of the target tensors. For quantum spin systems, TTNOpt searches for the ground state of Hamiltonians with bilinear spin interactions and magnetic fields, and computes physical properties of these states, including the variational energy, bipartite entanglement entropy (EE), single-site expectation values, and two-site correlation functions. Additionally, TTNOpt can target the lowest-energy state within a specified subspace, provided that the Hamiltonian conserves total magnetization. For high-dimensional data analysis, TTNOpt factorizes complex tensors into TTN states that maximize fidelity to the original tensors by optimizing the tensors and the network. When a TTN is provided as input, TTNOpt reconstructs the network based on the EE without referencing the fidelity of the original state. We present three demonstrations of TTNOpt: (1) Ground-state search for the hierarchical chain model with a system size of $256$. The entanglement patterns of the ground state manifest themselves in a tree structure, and TTNOpt successfully identifies the tree. (2) Factorization of a quantic tensor of the $2^{24}$ dimensions representing a three-variable function where each variant has a weak bit-wise correlation. The optimized TTN shows that its structure isolates the variables from each other. (3) Reconstruction of the matrix product network representing a $16$-variable normal distribution characterized by a tree-like correlation structure. TTNOpt can reveal hidden correlation structures of the covariance matrix.

Improving accuracy of tree-tensor network approach by optimization of network structure

Numerical methods based on tensor networks have been extensively explored in the research of quantum many-body systems in recent years. It has been recognized that the ability of tensor networks to describe a quantum many-body state crucially depends on the spatial structure of the network. In the previous work [Hikihara et al., Phys. Rev. Res. 5, 013031 (2023)], we proposed an algorithm based on tree tensor networks (TTNs) that automatically optimizes the structure of TTN according to the spatial profile of entanglement in the state of interest. In this paper, we apply the algorithm to the random XY-exchange model under random magnetic fields and the Richardson model in order to analyze how the performance of the algorithm depends on the detailed updating schemes of the structural optimization. We then find that for the random XY model, on the one hand, the algorithm achieves improved accuracy, and the stochastic algorithm, which selects the local network structure probabilistically, is notably effective. For the Richardson model, on the other hand, the resulting numerical accuracy subtly depends on the initial TTN and the updating schemes. In particular, the algorithm without the stochastic updating scheme certainly improves the accuracy, while the one with the stochastic updates results in poor accuracy due to the effect of randomizing the network structure at the early stage of the calculation. These results indicate that the algorithm successfully improves the accuracy of the numerical calculations for quantum many-body states, while it is essential to appropriately choose the updating scheme as well as the initial TTN structure, depending on the systems treated.

Visualization of Entanglement Geometry by Structural Optimization of Tree Tensor Network

In tensor-network analysis of quantum many-body systems, it is of crucial importance to employ a tensor network with a spatial structure suitable for representing the state of interest. In the previous work [Hikihara et al., Phys. Rev. Research 5, 013031 (2023)], we proposed a structural optimization algorithm for tree-tensor networks. In this paper, we apply the algorithm to the Rainbow-chain model, which has a product state of singlet pairs between spins separated by various distances as an approximate ground state. We then demonstrate that the algorithm can successfully visualize the spatial pattern of spin-singlet pairs in the ground state.

Automatic structural optimization of tree tensor networks

Tree tensor network (TTN) provides an essential theoretical framework for the practical simulation of quantum many-body systems, where the network structure defined by the connectivity of the isometry tensors plays a crucial role in improving its approximation accuracy. In this paper, we propose a TTN algorithm that enables us to automatically optimize the network structure by local reconnections of isometries to suppress the bipartite entanglement entropy on their legs. The algorithm can be seamlessly implemented to such a conventional TTN approach as density-matrix renormalization group. We apply the algorithm to the inhomogeneous antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chain having a hierarchical spatial distribution of the interactions. We then demonstrate that the entanglement structure embedded in the ground-state of the system can be efficiently visualized as a perfect binary tree in the optimized TTN. Possible improvements and applications of the algorithm are also discussed.

Entanglement-based tensor-network strong-disorder renormalization group

We propose an entanglement-based algorithm of the tensor-network strong-disorder renormalization group (tSDRG) method for quantum spin systems with quenched randomness. In contrast to the previous tSDRG algorithm based on the energy spectrum of renormalized block Hamiltonians, we directly utilizes the entanglement structure associated with the blocks to be renormalized. We examine accuracy of the new algorithm for the random antiferromagnetic Heisenberg models on the one-dimensional, triangular, and square lattices. We then find that the entanglement-based tSDRG achieves better accuracy than the previous one for the square lattice model with weak randomness, while it is less efficient for the one-dimensional and triangular lattice models particularly in the strong randomness region. The theoretical background and possible improvements of the algorithm are also discussed.

Frustration-induced quantum spin liquid behavior in the $s=$1/2 random-bond Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the zigzag chain

Recent studies have revealed that the randomness-induced quantum spin liquid (QSL)-like state is stabilized in certain frustrated quantum magnets in two and three dimensions. In order to clarify the nature of this gapless QSL-like state, we investigate both zero- and finite-temperature properties of the random-bond one-dimensional (1D) $s=12$ Heisenberg model with the competing nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions, $J_1$ and $J_2$, by means of the exact diagonalization, density-matrix renormalization-group and Hams--de Raedt methods. We find that, on increasing the frustration $J_2$, the gapless nonmagnetic state stabilized in the unfrustrated model with $J_2=0$, the {\it unfrustrated\} random-singlet (RS) state, exhibits a phase transition into different gapless nonmagnetic state, the {\it frustrated\} RS state. This frustrated RS state in 1D has properties quite similar to the randomness-induced QSL-like state recently identified in 2D and 3D frustrated magnets exhibiting the $T$-linear low-temperature ($T$) specific heat, while the unfrustrated RS state is more or less specific to the unfrustrated 1D system exhibiting the $\sim 1(\log T)^3$ low-$T$ specific heat. Universal features and the robustness against perturbations of the frustrated RS state are emphasized.

Tensor-network strong-disorder renormalization groups for random quantum spin systems in two dimensions

Novel randomness-induced disordered ground states in two-dimensional (2D) quantum spin systems have been attracting much interest. For quantitative analysis of such random quantum spin systems, one of the most promising numerical approaches is the tensor-network strong-disorder renormalization group (tSDRG), which was basically established for one-dimensional (1D) systems. In this paper, we propose a possible improvement of its algorithm toward 2D random spin systems, focusing on a generating process of the tree network structure of tensors, and precisely examine their performances for the random antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model not only on the 1D chain but also on the square- and triangular-lattices. On the basis of comparison with the exact numerical results up to 36 site systems, we demonstrate that accuracy of the optimal tSDRG algorithm is significantly improved even for the 2D systems in the strong-randomness regime.

Spin nematics in frustrated spin-dimer systems with bilayer structure

We study frustrated spin-1/2 dimer systems in two dimensions with a bilayer structure, where spins are ferromagnetically coupled in dimers. Our model includes frustrated two-spin exchange interactions as well as four-spin interaction. We pay particular attention to the spin nematic phase, which does not exhibit any magnetic (spin-dipole) order but has a spin-quadrupolar long-range order. Employing a perturbation calculation, a mean-field approximation, and a numerical many-variable variational Monte Carlo method, we determine ground-state phase diagrams on various two-dimensional lattices. It is found that the model exhibits the spin nematic phase with ferro-quadrupolar order in a wide parameter region, in addition to conventional magnetically-ordered phases. In particular, it is shown that even when the four-spin interactions are absent, frustrated two-spin exchange interactions can realize the spin nematic phase as a result of strong interdimer correlations. It is also found that the phase transitions between the spin nematic phase and antiferromagnetic phases can be continuous. Furthermore, we present some exact arguments that various phases including the spin nematic phase and the vector chiral (p-type nematic) phase emerge from an SU(4) symmetric point in the model by the addition of appropriate perturbative interactions. The spin nematic phase generated from the SU(4) point is connected with the spin nematic phase found numerically in the system with only two-spin interactions.

Quantum phase transitions beyond Landau-Ginzburg theory in one-dimensional space revisited

The phase diagram of the quantum spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic $J^{\,}_{1}$-$J^{\,}_{2}$ XXZ chain was obtained by Haldane using bosonization techniques. It supports three distinct phases for $0\leq J^{\,}_{2}/J^{\,}_{1}<1/2$, i.e., a gapless algebraic spin liquid phase, a gapped long-range ordered Neel phase, and a gapped long-range ordered dimer phase. Even though the Neel and dimer phases are not related hierarchically by a pattern of symmetry breaking, it was shown that they meet along a line of quantum critical points with a U(1) symmetry and central charge $c=1$. Here, we extend the analysis made by Haldane on the quantum spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic $J^{\,}_{1}$-$J^{\,}_{2}$ XYZ chain using both bosonization and numerical techniques. We show that there are three Neel phases and the dimer phase that are separated from each other by six planes of phase boundaries realizing U(1) criticality when $0\leq J^{\,}_{2}/J^{\,}_{1}<1/2$. We also show that each long-range ordered phase harbors topological point defects (domain walls) that are dual to those across the phase boundary in that a defect in one ordered phase locally binds the other type of order around its core. By using the bosonization approach, we identify the critical theory that describes simultaneous proliferation of these dual point defects, and show that it supports an emergent U(1) symmetry that originates from the discrete symmetries of the XYZ model. To confirm this numerically, we perform DMRG calculation and show that the critical theory is characterized by the central charge $c=1$ with critical exponents that are consistent with those obtained from the bosonization approach. Furthermore, we generalize the field theoretic description of direct continuous phase transition to higher dimensions, especially in $d=3$, by using a non-linear sigma model (NLSM) with a topological term.

Ground-State Phase Diagram of an Anisotropic S=1/2 Ladder with Different Leg Interactions

We explore the ground-state phase diagram of the $S=1/2$ two-leg ladder with different leg interactions. The $xy$ and $z$ components of the leg interactions between nearest-neighbor spins in the $a$ ($b$) leg are respectively denoted by $J_{{\rm l},a}$ and $Δ_{\rm l} J_{{\rm l},a}$ ($J_{{\rm l},b}$ and $Δ_{\rm l} J_{{\rm l},b}$). On the other hand, the $xy$ and $z$ components of the uniform rung interactions are respectively denoted by $Γ_{\rm r} J_{\rm r}$ and $J_{\rm r}$. In the above, $Δ_{\rm l}$ and $Γ_{\rm r}$ are the $XXZ$-type anisotropy parameters for the leg and rung interactions, respectively. This system has a frustration when $J_{{\rm l},a} J_{{\rm l},b}<0$ irrespective of the sign of $J_{\rm r}$. The phase diagram on the $Δ_{\rm l}$ ($|Δ_{\rm l}| \leq 1.0$) versus $J_{{\rm l},b}$ ($-2.0\leq J_{{\rm l},b}\leq 3.0$) plane in the case where $J_{{\rm l},a}=0.2$, $J_{\rm r}=-1.0$, and $Γ_{\rm r} = 0.5$ is determined numerically. We employ the physical consideration, and the level spectroscopy and phenomenological renormalization-group analyses of the numerical date obtained by the exact diagonalization method. The resultant phase diagram contains the ferromagnetic, Haldane, N{é}el, nematic Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL), partial ferrimagnetic, and $XY1$ phases. Interestingly enough, the nematic TLL phase appears in the strong-rung unfrustrated region as well as in the strong-rung frustrated one. We perform the first-order perturbational calculations from the strong rung coupling limit to elucidate the characteristic features of the phase diagram. Furthermore, we make the density-matrix renormalization-group calculations for some physical quantities such as the energy gaps, the local magnetization, and the spin correlation functions to supplement the reliability of the phase diagram.

Dimer correlation amplitudes and dimer excitation gap in spin-1/2 XXZ and Heisenberg chains

Correlation functions of dimer operators, the product operators of spins on two adjacent sites, are studied in the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XXZ chain in the critical regime. The amplitudes of the leading oscillating terms in the dimer correlation functions are determined with high accuracy as functions of the exchange anisotropy parameter and the external magnetic field, through the combined use of bosonization and density-matrix renormalization group methods. In particular, for the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with SU(2) symmetry, logarithmic corrections to the dimer correlations due to the marginally-irrelevant operator are studied, and the asymptotic form of the dimer correlation function is obtained. The asymptotic form of the spin-Peierls excitation gap including logarithmic corrections is also derived.

Frustrated S=1/2 Two-Leg Ladder with Different Leg Interactions

We explore the ground-state phase diagram of the $S\!=\!1/2$ two-leg ladder with different isotropic leg interactions and uniform anisotropic rung ones, which is described by the Hamiltonian ${\cal H}=J_{{\rm l},a} \sum\nolimits_{j=1}^{L}{\vec S}_{j,a}\cdot {\vec S}_{j+1,a}+J_{{\rm l},b} \sum\nolimits_{j=1}^{L} {\vec S}_{j,b}\cdot {\vec S}_{j+1,b}+J_{\rm r} \sum\nolimits_{j=1}^{L} \bigl\{S_{j,a}^x S_{j,b}^x + S_{j,a}^y S_{j,b}^y + ΔS_{j,a}^z S_{j,b}^z \bigr\}$. This system has a frustration when $J_{{\rm l},a} J_{{\rm l},b}\!<\!0$ irrespective of the sign of $J_{\rm r}$. The phase diagrams on the $Δ$ ($0\!\leq\!Δ\!<\!1$) versus $J_{{\rm l},b}$ plane in the cases of {$J_{{\rm l},a}\!=\!-0.2$ and $J_{{\rm l},a}\!=\!0.2$ with $J_{\rm r}\!=\!-1$ are determined numerically. We employ the physical consideration, the level spectroscopy analysis of the results obtained by the exact diagonalization method and also the density-matrix renormalization-group method. It is found that the non-collinear ferrimagnetic (NCFR) state appears as the ground state in the frustrated region of the parameters. Furthermore, the direct-product triplet-dimer (TD) state in which all rungs form the TD pair is the exact ground state, when $J_{{\rm l},a}\!+\!J_{{\rm l},b}\!=\!0$ and $0 \leq Δ\leq 0.83$. The obtained phase diagrams consist of the TD, $XY$ and Haldane phases as well as the NCFR phase.

Exact ground states of frustrated quantum spin systems consisting of spin-dimer units

We study frustrated quantum spin systems consisting of dimers of spin-1/2 spins. We derive several models that have the exact ground state of the form of the direct product of dimer states. The ground states realized include the product state of dimer singlets, that of dimer triplets with zero magnetization, those of dimer-spin-nematic states, and those of a mixture of the dimer states. Pseudo spin-1/2 operators emerging in each dimer are also introduced.

Ground-state phase diagram of an anisotropic S=1/2 ladder with alternating rung interactions

Employing mainly numerical methods, we explore the ground-state phase diagram of an anisotropic $S=1/2$ ladder, in which leg interactions are uniform and isotropic, while rung interactions are alternating and have a common Ising-type anisotropy. We determine the phase diagram in the case where $J_{\rm leg}=0.2$ (antiferromagnetic), $J_{\rm rung}=-1.0$ (ferromagnetic) and $|J_{\rm rung}'|\!\leq\!1.0$, the first one being the magnitude of the leg interaction and the second and third ones those of the rung interactions, which are alternating. It is emphasized that the system has a frustration when $J_{\rm rung}'$ is positive. We find that, in the frustrated region, the Haldane state appears as the ground state even when the Ising character of rung interactions is strong. This appearance of the Haldane phase is contrary to the ordinary situation, and it is called the inversion phenomenon concerning the interaction anisotropy. We also find that an incommensurate state becomes the ground state in a portion of the Haldane phase region.

Long distance entanglement in one-dimensional quantum systems under sinusoidal deformation

We investigate entanglement generation in one-dimensional quantum spin systems with the sinusoidal deformation. In the system, the energy scale of each local term in the Hamiltonian is modified according to a position-dependent function \sin^α[\fracπ{N} (x - \frac{1}{2})], where x is the position of the local term and N is the length of the system. We show that at zero temperature the system with α\ge 2 is able to generate a sizable entanglement between two spins at open edges even when the two spins are infinitely far apart. This long-distance entanglement is rather robust against thermal fluctuations and survives up to a temperature that decays with the system size slowly, in an algebraic form.
