Spin-Nematic and Spin-Density-Wave Orders in Spatially Anisotropic Frustrated Magnets in a Magnetic Field

We develop a microscopic theory of finite-temperature spin-nematic orderings in three-dimensional spatially anisotropic magnets consisting of weakly-coupled frustrated spin-1/2 chains with nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor couplings in a magnetic field. Combining a field theoretical technique with density-matrix renormalization group results, we complete finite-temperature phase diagrams in a wide magnetic-field range that possess spin-bond-nematic and incommensurate spin-density-wave ordered phases. The effects of a four-spin interaction are also studied. The relevance of our results to quasi-one-dimensional edge-shared cuprate magnets such as LiCuVO4 is discussed.

Sine-square deformation of free fermion systems in one and higher dimensions

We study free fermion systems with the sine-square deformation (SSD), in which the energy scale of local Hamiltonians is modified according to the scaling function f(x)=sin^2[π(x-1/2)/L], where x is the position of the local Hamiltonian and L is the length of the system in the x direction. It has been revealed that when applied to one-dimensional critical systems the SSD realizes the translationally-invariant ground state which is the same as that of the uniform periodic system. In this paper, we propose a simple theory to explain how the SSD maintains the translational invariance in the ground-state wave function. In particular, for a certain one-dimensional system with SSD, it is shown that the ground state is exactly identical with the Fermi sea of the uniform periodic chain. We also apply the SSD to two-dimensional systems and show that the SSD is able to suppress the boundary modulations from the open edges extremely well, demonstrating that the SSD works in any dimensions and in any directions.

NMR relaxation rate in the field-induced octupolar liquid phase of spin-1/2 J1-J2 frustrated chains

In the spin-1/2 frustrated chain with nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic exchange J1 and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange J2 under magnetic field, magnetic multipolar-liquid (quadrupolar, octupolar, and hexadecapolar) phases are widely expanded from the saturation down to a low-field regime. Recently, we have clarified characteristic temperature and field dependence of the NMR relaxation rate 1/T_1 in the quadrupolar phase. In this paper, we examine those of 1/T_1 in the octupolar phase combining field theoretical method with numerical data. The relevance of the results to quasi one-dimensional J1-J2 magnets such as PbCuSO4(OH)2, Rb2Cu2Mo3O12 and Li2ZrCuO4 is shortly discussed.

Edge magnetism of Heisenberg model on honeycomb lattice

In our previous study, a single-branch of ferromagnetic magnon with linear dispersion is shown to exist near the (uncompensated) zigzag edge for Heisenberg model on honeycomb lattice. Here we develop a field-theory description for the edge magnon and find its dynamics is captured by the one-dimensional relativistic Klein-Gordon equation. It is intriguing that the boundary field theory for the edge magnon is tied up with its bulk counterpart, described by the two-dimensional Klein-Gordon equation. Furthermore, we also reveal how the parity symmetry relates evanescent modes on opposite edges in a honeycomb nanoribbon. By employing alternative methods, including Schwinger bosons and density-matrix renormalization group, we also demonstrate that the relativistic edge magnon is robust even when the Neel order in the bulk is destroyed by quantum fluctuations. The edge magnon is a direct consequence of uncompensated edge and may be verified in realistic materials by experimental probes.

Connecting distant ends of one-dimensional critical systems by a sine-square deformation

We study the one-dimensional quantum critical spin systems with the sine-square deformation, in which the energy scale in the Hamiltonian at the position $x$ is modified by the function $f_x = \sin^2\left[π{L}(x-1/2)]$, where $L$ is the length of the system. By investigating the entanglement entropy, spin correlation functions, and wave-function overlap, we show that the sine-square deformation changes the topology of the geometrical connection of the ground state drastically; Although the system apparently has open edges, the sine-square deformation links those ends and realizes the periodic ground state at the level of wave function. Our results propose a new method to control the topology of quantum states by energy-scale deformation.

Field and temperature dependence of the NMR relaxation rate in the magnetic quadrupolar liquid phase of spin-1/2 frustrated ferromagnetic chains

It is generally difficult to experimentally distinguish magnetic multipolar orders in spin systems. Recently, it was proposed that the temperature dependence of the nuclear magnetic resonance relaxation rate 1/T_1 can involve an indirect, but clear signature of the field-induced spin nematic or multipolar Tomonaga-Luttinger (TL) liquid phase [Phys. Rev. B79, 060406(R) (2009)]. In this paper, we evaluate accurately the field and temperature dependence of 1/T_1 in spin-1/2 frustrated J1-J2 chains combining field-theoretical techniques with numerical data. Our results demonstrate that isotherms of 1/T_1 as a function of magnetic field also exhibit distinctive non-monotonic behavior in spin nematic TL liquid, in contrast with the standard TL liquid in the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain. The relevance of our results to quasi one-dimensional edge-sharing cuprate magnets, such as LiCuVO4, is discussed.

Phase diagram of the frustrated spin ladder

We re-visit the phase diagram of the frustrated spin-1/2 ladder with two competing inter-chain antiferromagnetic exchanges, rung coupling J_\perp and diagonal coupling J_\times. We suggest, based on the accurate renormalization group analysis of the low-energy Hamiltonian of the ladder, that marginal inter-chain current-current interaction plays central role in destabilizing previously predicted intermediate columnar dimer phase in the vicinity of classical degeneracy line J_\perp = 2J_\times. Following this insight we then suggest that changing these competing inter-chain exchanges from the previously considered antiferromagnetic to the ferromagnetic ones eliminates the issue of the marginal interactions altogether and dramatically expands the region of stability of the columnar dimer phase. This analytical prediction is convincingly confirmed by the numerical density matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization calculations as well as by the perturbative calculation in the strong rung-coupling limit. The phase diagram for ferromagnetic J_\perp and J_\times is determined.

Ferromagnetism in armchair graphene nanoribbon

Due to the weak spin-orbit interaction and the peculiar relativistic dispersion in graphene, there are exciting proposals to build spin qubits in graphene nanoribbons with armchair boundaries. However, the mutual interactions between electrons are neglected in most studies so far and thus motivate us to investigate the role of electronic correlations in armchair graphene nanoribbon by both analytical and numerical methods. Here we show that the inclusion of mutual repulsions leads to drastic changes and the ground state turns ferromagnetic in a range of carrier concentrations. Our findings highlight the crucial importance of the electron-electron interaction and its subtle interplay with boundary topology in graphene nanoribbons. Furthermore, since the ferromagnetic properties sensitively depends on the carrier concentration, it can be manipulated at ease by electric gates. The resultant ferromagnetic state with metallic conductivity is not only surprising from an academic viewpoint, but also has potential applications in spintronics at nanoscale.

Vector chiral and multipolar orders in the spin-1/2 frustrated ferromagnetic chain in magnetic field

We study the one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with competing ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor J_1 and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor J_2 exchange couplings in the presence of magnetic field. We use both numerical approaches (the density matrix renormalization group method and exact diagonalization) and effective field-theory approach, and obtain the ground-state phase diagram for wide parameter range of the coupling ratio J_1/J_2. The phase diagram is rich and has a variety of phases, including the vector chiral phase, the nematic phase, and other multipolar phases. In the vector chiral phase, which appears in relatively weak magnetic field, the ground state exhibits long-range order (LRO) of vector chirality which spontaneously breaks a parity symmetry. The nematic phase shows a quasi-LRO of antiferro-nematic spin correlation, and arises as a result of formation of two-magnon bound states in high magnetic fields. Similarly, the higher multipolar phases, such as triatic (p=3) and quartic (p=4) phases, are formed through binding of p magnons near the saturation fields, showing quasi-LRO of antiferro-multipolar spin correlations. The multipolar phases cross over to spin density wave phases as the magnetic field is decreased, before encountering a phase transition to the vector chiral phase at a lower field. The implications of our results to quasi-one-dimensional frustrated magnets (e.g., LiCuVO_4) are discussed.

Magnetic Phase Diagram of Spin-1/2 Two-Leg Ladder with Four-Spin Ring Exchange

We study the spin-1/2 two-leg Heisenberg ladder with four-spin ring exchanges under a magnetic field. We introduce an exact duality transformation which is an extension of the spin-chirality duality developed previously and yields a new self-dual surface in the parameter space. We then determine the magnetic phase diagram using the numerical approaches of the density-matrix renormalization-group and exact diagonalization methods. We demonstrate the appearance of a magnetization plateau and the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid with dominant vector-chirality quasi-long-range order for a wide parameter regime of strong ring exchange. A "nematic" phase, in which magnons form bound pairs and the magnon-pairing correlation functions dominate, is also identified.

Spin dynamics in molecular ring nanomagnets: Significant effect of acoustic phonons and magnetic anisotropies

The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1_ is calculated for magnetic ring clusters by fully diagonalizing their microscopic spin Hamiltonians. Whether the nearest-neighbor exchange interaction J is ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic, 1/T_1_ versus temperature T in ring nanomagnets may be peaked at around k_B_T=|J| provided the lifetime broadening of discrete energy levels is in proportion to T^3^. Experimental findings for ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Cu^II^ rings are reproduced with crucial contributions of magnetic anisotropies as well as acoustic phonons.

Interplay among Spin, Orbital and Lattice Degrees of Freedom in $t_{2g}$ Electron Systems with Edge-Sharing Network of Octahedra

Transition metal oxides whose lattice structure has edge-sharing network of octahedra constitute a diverse group of intriguing materials besides compounds with corner-sharing octahedra such as perovskites. We present a theoretical investigation of the interplay among spin, orbital and lattice degrees of freedom in these materials. We focus on $t_{2g}$ electron systems where a keen competition among those degrees of freedom is expected to emerge under a relatively weak Jahn-Teller coupling. We study the interplay between spin and orbital degrees of freedom in vanadium spinels and titanium pyroxenes. We clarify the important role of the strong anisotropy in the orbital interactions due to the edge-sharing geometry. We also discuss the interplay between spin and lattice in chromium spinels focusing on the magnetization process under the external magnetic field.

Duality relations and exotic orders in electronic ladder systems

We discuss duality relations in correlated electronic ladder systems to clarify mutual relations between various conventional and unconventional phases. For the generalized two-leg Hubbard ladder, we find two exact duality relations, and also one asymptotic relation which holds in the low-energy regime. These duality relations show that unconventional (exotic) density-wave orders such as staggered flux or circulating spin-current are directly mapped to conventional density-wave orders, which establishes the appearance of various exotic states with time-reversal and/or spin symmetry breaking. We also study duality relations in the SO(5) symmetry that was proposed to unify antiferromagnetism and d-wave superconductivity. We show that the same SO(5) symmetry also unifies circulating spin current order and s-wave superconductivity.

Orbital and spin interplay in spin-gap formation in pyroxene titanium oxides ATiSi2O6 (A=Na, Li)

Interplay between orbital and spin degrees of freedom is theoretically studied for the phase transition to the spin-singlet state with lattice dimerization in pyroxene titanium oxides ATiSi2O6 (A=Na, Li). For the quasi one-dimensional spin-1/2 systems, we derive an effective spin-orbital-lattice coupled model in the strong correlation limit with explicitly taking account of the t_2g orbital degeneracy, and investigate the model by numerical simulation as well as the mean-field analysis. We find a nontrivial feedback effect between orbital and spin degrees of freedom; as temperature decreases, development of antiferromagnetic spin correlations changes the sign of orbital correlations from antiferro to ferro type, and finally the ferro-type orbital correlations induce the dimerization and the spin-singlet formation. As a result of this interplay, the system undergoes a finite-temperature transition to the spin-dimer and orbital-ferro ordered phase concomitant with the Jahn-Teller lattice distortion. The numerical results for the magnetic susceptibility show a deviation from the Curie-Weiss behavior, and well reproduce the experimental data. The results reveal that the Jahn-Teller energy scale is considerably small and the orbital and spin exchange interactions play a decisive role in the pyroxene titanium oxides.

Phase transitions in spin-orbital coupled model for pyroxene titanium oxides

We study the competing phases and the phase transition phenomena in an effective spin-orbital coupled model derived for pyroxene titanium oxides ATiSi2O6 (A=Na, Li). Using the mean-field-type analysis and the numerical quantum transfer matrix method, we show that the model exhibits two different ordered states, the spin-dimer and orbital-ferro state and the spin-ferro and orbital-antiferro state. The transition between two phases is driven by the relative strength of the Hund's-rule coupling to the onsite Coulomb repulsion and/or by the external magnetic field. The ground-state phase diagram is determined. There is a keen competition between orbital and spin degrees of freedom in the multicritical regime, which causes large fluctuations and significantly affects finite-temperature properties in the paramagnetic phase.

Exact duality relations in correlated electron systems

Using gauge transformations on electron bond operators, we derive exact duality relations between various order parameters for correlated electron systems. Applying these transformations, we find two duality relations in the generalized two-leg Hubbard ladder at arbitrary filling. The relations show that unconventional density-wave orders such as staggered flux or circulating spin-current are dual to conventional density-wave orders and there are direct mappings between dual phases. Several exact results on the phase diagram are also concluded.

Scalar chiral ground states of spin ladders with four-spin exchanges

We show that scalar chiral order can be induced by four-spin exchanges in the two-leg spin ladder, using the spin-chirality duality transformation and matrix-product ansatz. Scalar-chiral-ordered states are found to be exact ground states in a family of spin ladder models. In this scalar chiral phase, there is a finite energy gap above the doubly degenerate ground states and a $Z_2 \times Z_2 \times Z_2$ symmetry is fully broken. It is also shown that the SU(4)-symmetric model, which is self-dual under the duality transformation, is on a multicritical point surrounded by the staggered dimer phase, the staggered scalar chiral phase, and the gapless phase.

Ground-state properties of nanographite systems with zigzag-shaped edges

A π-electron network in nanographite systems with zigzag edges exhibits strongly localized edge states, which are expected to have peculiar properties. We study effects of electron-electron interactions on ground-state properties of the systems by means of the weak-coupling renormalization group and the density-matrix renormalization-group method. It is shown that the ground state is a spin-singlet Mott insulator with finite charge and spin gaps. We also find that the edge states are robust against the electronic correlations, resulting in edge effective spins which can flip almost freely. The schematic picture for the low-energy physics of the systems is discussed.
