Quantum synchronization of spin-1 system: Enhanced synchronization due to additive Lindblad operators

We experimentally investigate quantum synchronization for one of the simplest possible quantum systems, namely an externally driven few-level system with equally spaced energy levels effectively acting as a spin-1 system. Coupling to excited auxiliary states, we realize additive effective Lindblad operators that are associated with non-conventional dissipative pathways, which are shown to enhance, in certain parameter regimes, quantum synchronization. The experimental set-up, which utilizes cold $^{87}$Rb atoms in a MOT, and associated synchronization extraction protocol are benchmarked carefully through dedicated simulations. Convincing agreement is found between experiment and simulations. The dissipation engineering approach established in our work can be readily extended to systems with more energy levels, such as effective spin-$3/2$ or spin-$2$ systems, and has implications for quantum synchronization studies in higher-spin systems as well as for a wide range of quantum science studies and technology applications.

Boosting the performance of a Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick quantum battery via symmetry-breaking quenches or a single-mode bosonic charger

We explore the operation of quantum batteries in the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model, when they are charged either through a sudden quench in the magnetic field strength or by coupling them to a single-mode bosonic charger. Through initializing the battery in either the symmetric or broken symmetry phases of the LMG model we analyze how the different spectral properties can affect the performance of both the charging and discharging of the battery. In particular, we show that by quenching the magnetic field strength from the symmetric phase to the broken phase, we can achieve a significant enhancement in stored energy, as well as stable and efficient ergotropy extraction. Similar observations can be made when introducing weak coupling between the battery with the bosonic charger, while the amount of stored work and ergotropy saturate at strong coupling. These findings emphasize the importance of the magnetic field dynamics or environmental coupling in optimizing charging performance, which could lead to practical applications in quantum energy storage.

A general recursion for integrals involving products of Hermite polynomials and its applications

This study presents the derivation of a recursive formula for integrals of products of $N$ Hermite polynomials, establishing a numerically stable scheme for their accurate evaluation in computer codes. The derivation is notably simple and leverages solely the well-established properties of Hermite polynomials and the method of integration by parts. Importantly, our formulation completely circumvents explicit factorials, thereby preventing potential numerical instabilities and overflows, while facilitating high-precision computations for large indices. These findings are of significant relevance to a variety of areas in physics and mathematics. In particular, they offer an efficient and accurate framework for calculating two- and three-body matrix elements in ab initio simulations of few-body systems under a 1D harmonic confinement using the Configuration Interactions approach. A numerical subroutine implementing the recursive formula is provided as supplemental material.

Quantum correlations and spatial localization in trapped one-dimensional ultra-cold Bose-Bose-Bose mixtures

We systematically investigate and illustrate the complete ground-state phase diagram for a one-dimensional, three-species mixture of a few repulsively interacting bosons trapped harmonically. To numerically obtain the solutions to the many-body Schrödinger equation, we employ the improved Exact Diagonalization method [T. D. Anh-Tai {\it et al.}, SciPost Physics 15, 048 (2023)], which is capable of treating strongly-correlated few-body systems from first principles in an efficiently truncated Hilbert space. We present our comprehensive results for all possible combinations of intra- and interspecies interactions in the extreme limits that are either the ideal limit ($g=0$) or close to the hard-core limit ($g\to\infty$). These results show the emergence of unique ground-state properties related to correlations, coherence and spatial localization stemming from strongly repulsive interactions.

Engineering impurity Bell states through coupling with a quantum bath

We theoretically demonstrate the feasibility of creating Bell states in multi-component ultra-cold atomic gases by solely using the ability to control the inter-particle interactions via Feshbach resonances. For this we consider two distinguishable impurities immersed in an atomic background cloud of a few bosons, with the entire system being confined in a one-dimensional harmonic trap. By analyzing the numerically obtained ground states we demonstrate that the two impurities can form spatially entangled bipolaron states due to mediated interactions from the bosonic bath. Our analysis is based on calculating the correlations between the two impurities in a two-mode basis, which is experimentally accessible by measuring the particles positions in the left or right sides of the trap. While interspecies interactions are crucial in order to create the strongly entangled impurity states, it can also inhibit correlations depending on the ordering of the impurities and three-body impurity-bath correlations. We show how these drawbacks can be mitigated by manipulating the properties of the bath, namely its size, mass and intraspecies interactions, allowing to create impurity Bell states over a wide range of impurity-impurity interactions.

Effect of magnetic field on the Bose-Einstein condensation of quantum well exciton-polaritons

We theoretically investigate the nonlinear effects of a magnetic field on the relaxation process of exciton-polaritons toward Bose-Einstein condensation in GaAs quantum wells. Our study reveals that the modification of the exciton's effective mass, Rabi splitting, and dispersion significantly alters the relaxation rate of polaritons as they approach condensation. By employing a quasi-stationary pump, we clarify the dynamics of the total and condensed polariton populations in response to varying magnetic field strengths. Notably, we demonstrate that under low-energy pumping conditions, the presence of a magnetic field significantly suppresses condensation. This suppression is attributed to the decreased scattering rate between energy levels, which is a consequence of the reduced steepness in the high-energy dispersion. Conversely, increasing both the pump energy and the magnetic field can enhance relaxation efficiency, leading to a substantially larger number of condensed polaritons.

A revisit on the hydrogen atom induced by a uniform static electric field

In this paper, we revisit the Stark effect of the hydrogen atom induced by a uniform static electric field. In particular, a general formula for the integral of associated Laguerre polynomials was derived by applying the method for Hermite polynomials of degree n proposed in the work [Anh-Tai T.D. et al., 2021 AIP Advances \textbf{11} 085310]. The quadratic Stark effect is obtained by applying this formula and the time-independent non-degenerate perturbation theory to hydrogen. Using the Siegert State method, numerical calculations are performed and serve as data for benchmarking. The comparisons are then illustrated for the ground and some highly excited states to provide an insightful look at the applicable limit and precision of the quadratic Stark effect formula for other atoms with comparable properties.

Variational quantum algorithm for ergotropy estimation in quantum many-body batteries

Quantum batteries are predicted to have the potential to outperform their classical counterparts and are therefore an important element in the development of quantum technologies. Of particular interest is the role of correlations in many-body quantum batteries and how these can affect the maximal work extraction, quantified by the ergotropy. In this work we simulate the charging process and work extraction of many-body quantum batteries on noisy-intermediate scale quantum (NISQ) devices, and devise the Variational Quantum Ergotropy (VQErgo) algorithm which finds the optimal unitary operation that maximises work extraction from the battery. We test VQErgo by calculating the ergotropy of a many-body quantum battery undergoing transverse field Ising dynamics following a sudden quench. We investigate the battery for different system sizes and charging times, and analyze the minimum number of ansatz circuit repetitions needed for the variational optimization using both ideal and noisy simulators. We also discuss how the growth of long-range correlations can hamper the accuracy of VQErgo in larger systems, requiring increased repetitions of the ansatz circuit to reduce error. Finally, we optimize part of the VQErgo algorithm and calculate the ergotropy on one of IBM's quantum devices.

Quantum chaos in interacting Bose-Bose mixtures

The appearance of chaotic quantum dynamics significantly depends on the symmetry properties of the system, and in cold atomic systems many of these can be experimentally controlled. In this work, we systematically study the emergence of quantum chaos in a minimal system describing one-dimensional harmonically trapped Bose-Bose mixtures by tuning the particle-particle interactions. Using an advanced exact diagonalization scheme, we examine the transition from integrability to chaos when the inter-component interaction changes from weak to strong. Our study is based on the analysis of the level spacing distribution and the distribution of the matrix elements of observables in terms of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis and their dynamics. We show that one can obtain strong signatures of chaos by increasing the inter-component interaction strength and breaking the symmetry of intra-component interactions.
