The Hochschild cohomology ring of a global quotient orbifold

We study the cup product on the Hochschild cohomology of the stack quotient [X/G] of a smooth quasi-projective variety X by a finite group G. More specifically, we construct a G-equivariant sheaf of graded algebras on X whose G-invariant global sections recover the associated graded algebra of the Hochschild cohomology of [X/G], under a natural filtration. This sheaf is an algebra over the polyvector fields T^{poly}_X on X, and is generated as a T^{poly}_X-algebra by the sum of the determinants det(N_{X^g}) of the normal bundles of the fixed loci in X. We employ our understanding of Hochschild cohomology to conclude that the analog of Kontsevich's formality theorem, for the cup product, does not hold for Deligne--Mumford stacks in general. We discuss relationships with orbifold cohomology, extending Ruan's cohomological conjectures. This employs a trivialization of the determinants in the case of a symplectic group action on a symplectic variety X, which requires (for the cup product) a nontrivial normalization missing in previous literature.

Equivariant slices for symplectic cones

The Darboux-Weinstein decomposition is a central result in the theory of Poisson (degenerate symplectic) varieties, which gives a local decomposition at a point as a product of the formal neighborhood of the symplectic leaf through the point and a formal slice. Recently, conical symplectic resolutions, and more generally, Poisson cones, have been very actively studied in representation theory and algebraic geometry. This motivates asking for a C*-equivariant version of the Darboux-Weinstein decomposition. In this paper, we develop such a theory, prove basic results on their existence and uniqueness, study examples (quotient singularities and hypertoric varieties), and applications to noncommutative algebra (their quantization). We also pose some natural questions on existence and quantization of C*-actions on slices to conical symplectic leaves.

On D-modules related to the b-function and Hamiltonian flow

Let f be a quasi-homogeneous polynomial with an isolated singularity. We compute the length of the D-modules $Df^c/Df^{c+1}$ generated by complex powers of f in terms of the Hodge filtration on the top cohomology of the Milnor fiber. For 1/f we obtain one more than the reduced genus of the singularity. We conjecture that this holds without the quasi-homogeneous assumption. We also deduce that the aforementioned quotient is nonzero when c is a root of the b-function of f (which Saito recently showed fails to hold in the inhomogeneous case). We obtain these results by comparing these D-modules to those defined by Etingof and the second author which represent invariants under Hamiltonian flow.

Poisson traces, D-modules, and symplectic resolutions

We survey the theory of Poisson traces (or zeroth Poisson homology) developed by the authors in a series of recent papers. The goal is to understand this subtle invariant of (singular) Poisson varieties, conditions for it to be finite-dimensional, its relationship to the geometry and topology of symplectic resolutions, and its applications to quantizations. The main technique is the study of a canonical D-module on the variety. In the case the variety has finitely many symplectic leaves (such as for symplectic singularities and Hamiltonian reductions of symplectic vector spaces by reductive groups), the D-module is holonomic, and hence the space of Poisson traces is finite-dimensional. As an application, there are finitely many irreducible finite-dimensional representations of every quantization of the variety. Conjecturally, the D-module is the pushforward of the canonical D-module under every symplectic resolution of singularities, which implies that the space of Poisson traces is dual to the top cohomology of the resolution. We explain many examples where the conjecture is proved, such as symmetric powers of du Val singularities and symplectic surfaces and Slodowy slices in the nilpotent cone of a semisimple Lie algebra. We compute the D-module in the case of surfaces with isolated singularities, and show it is not always semisimple. We also explain generalizations to arbitrary Lie algebras of vector fields, connections to the Bernstein-Sato polynomial, relations to two-variable special polynomials such as Kostka polynomials and Tutte polynomials, and a conjectural relationship with deformations of symplectic resolutions. In the appendix we give a brief recollection of the theory of D-modules on singular varieties that we require.

Filtrations on Springer fiber cohomology and Kostka polynomials

We prove a conjecture which expresses the bigraded Poisson-de Rham homology of the nilpotent cone of a semisimple Lie algebra in terms of the generalized (one-variable) Kostka polynomials, via a formula suggested by Lusztig. This allows us to construct a canonical family of filtrations on the flag variety cohomology, and hence on irreducible representations of the Weyl group, whose Hilbert series are given by the generalized Kostka polynomials. We deduce consequences for the cohomology of all Springer fibers. In particular, this computes the grading on the zeroth Poisson homology of all classical finite W-algebras, as well as the filtration on the zeroth Hochschild homology of all quantum finite W-algebras, and we generalize to all homology degrees. As a consequence, we deduce a conjecture of Proudfoot on symplectic duality, relating in type A the Poisson homology of Slodowy slices to the intersection cohomology of nilpotent orbit closures. In the last section, we give an analogue of our main theorem in the setting of mirabolic D-modules.

Holonomic Poisson manifolds and deformations of elliptic algebras

We introduce a natural nondegeneracy condition for Poisson structures, called holonomicity, which is closely related to the notion of a log symplectic form. Holonomic Poisson manifolds are privileged by the fact that their deformation spaces are as finite-dimensional as one could ever hope: the corresponding derived deformation complex is a perverse sheaf. We develop some basic structural features of these manifolds, highlighting the role played by the divergence of Hamiltonian vector fields. As an application, we establish the deformation-invariance of certain families of Poisson manifolds defined by Feigin and Odesskii, along with the "elliptic algebras" that quantize them.

Hyperplane arrangements associated to symplectic quotient singularities

We study the hyperplane arrangements associated, via the minimal model programme, to symplectic quotient singularities. We show that this hyperplane arrangement equals the arrangement of CM-hyperplanes coming from the representation theory of restricted rational Cherednik algebras. We explain some of the interesting consequences of this identification for the representation theory of restricted rational Cherednik algebras. We also show that the Calogero-Moser space is smooth if and only if the Calogero-Moser families are trivial. We describe the arrangements of CM-hyperplanes associated to several exceptional complex reflection groups, some of which are free.

Invariants of Hamiltonian flow on locally complete intersections

We consider the Hamiltonian flow on complex complete intersection surfaces with isolated singularities, equipped with the Jacobian Poisson structure. More generally we consider complete intersections of arbitrary dimension equipped with Hamiltonian flow with respect to the natural top polyvector field, which one should view as a degenerate Calabi-Yau structure. Our main result computes the coinvariants of functions under the Hamiltonian flow. In the surface case this is the zeroth Poisson homology, and our result generalizes those of Greuel, Alev and Lambre, and the authors in the quasihomogeneous and formal cases. Its dimension is the sum of the dimension of the top cohomology and the sum of the Milnor numbers of the singularities. In other words, this equals the dimension of the top cohomology of a smoothing of the variety. More generally, we compute the derived coinvariants, which replaces the top cohomology by all of the cohomology. Still more generally we compute the D-module which represents all invariants under Hamiltonian flow, which is a nontrivial extension (on both sides) of the intersection cohomology D-module, which is maximal on the bottom but not on the top. For cones over smooth curves of genus g, the extension on the top is the holomorphic half of the maximal extension.

Zeroth Hochschild homology of preprojective algebras over the integers

We determine the Z-module structure of the preprojective algebra and its zeroth Hochschild homology, for any non-Dynkin quiver (and hence the structure working over any base commutative ring, of any characteristic). This answers (and generalizes) a conjecture of Hesselholt and Rains, producing new $p$-torsion classes in degrees 2p^l, l >= 1, We relate these classes by p-th power maps and interpret them in terms of the kernel of Verschiebung maps from noncommutative Witt theory. An important tool is a generalization of the Diamond Lemma to modules over commutative rings, which we give in the appendix. In the previous version, additional results are included, such as: the Poisson center of $\text{Sym } HH_0(Π)$ for all quivers, the BV algebra structure on Hochschild cohomology, including how the Lie algebra structure $HH_0(Π_Q)$ naturally arises from it, and the cyclic homology groups of $Π_Q$.

Poisson-de Rham homology of hypertoric varieties and nilpotent cones

We prove a conjecture of Etingof and the second author for hypertoric varieties, that the Poisson-de Rham homology of a unimodular hypertoric cone is isomorphic to the de Rham cohomology of its hypertoric resolution. More generally, we prove that this conjecture holds for an arbitrary conical variety admitting a symplectic resolution if and only if it holds in degree zero for all normal slices to symplectic leaves. The Poisson-de Rham homology of a Poisson cone inherits a second grading. In the hypertoric case, we compute the resulting 2-variable Poisson-de Rham-Poincare polynomial, and prove that it is equal to a specialization of an enrichment of the Tutte polynomial of a matroid that was introduced by Denham. We also compute this polynomial for S3-varieties of type A in terms of Kostka polynomials, modulo a previous conjecture of the first author, and we give a conjectural answer for nilpotent cones in arbitrary type, which we prove in rank less than or equal to 2.

On the (non)existence of symplectic resolutions for imprimitive symplectic reflection groups

We study the existence of symplectic resolutions of quotient singularities V/G where V is a symplectic vector space and G acts symplectically. Namely, we classify the symplectically irreducible and imprimitive groups, excluding those of the form $K \rtimes S_2$ where $K < \SL_2(\C)$, for which the corresponding quotient singularity admits a projective symplectic resolution. As a consequence, for $\dim V \neq 4$, we classify all quotient singularities $V/G$ admitting a projective symplectic resolution which do not decompose as a product of smaller-dimensional quotient singularities, except for at most four explicit singularities, that occur in dimensions at most 10, for whom the question of existence remains open.

Coinvariants of Lie algebras of vector fields on algebraic varieties

We prove that the space of coinvariants of functions on an affine variety by a Lie algebra of vector fields whose flow generates finitely many leaves is finite-dimensional. Cases of the theorem include Poisson (or more generally Jacobi) varieties with finitely many symplectic leaves under Hamiltonian flow, complete intersections in Calabi-Yau varieties with isolated singularities under the flow of incompressible vector fields, quotients of Calabi-Yau varieties by finite volume-preserving groups under the incompressible vector fields, and arbitrary varieties with isolated singularities under the flow of all vector fields. We compute this quotient explicitly in many of these cases. The proofs involve constructing a natural D-module representing the invariants under the flow of the vector fields, which we prove is holonomic if it has finitely many leaves (and whose holonomicity we study in more detail). We give many counterexamples to naive generalizations of our results. These examples have been a source of motivation for us.

Free products, cyclic homology, and the Gauss-Manin connection

We present a new approach to cyclic homology that does not involve the Connes differential and is based on a `noncommutative equivariant de Rham complex' of an associative algebra. The differential in that complex is a sum of the Karoubi-de Rham differential, which replaces the Connes differential, and another operation analogous to contraction with a vector field. As a byproduct, we give a simple explicit construction of the Gauss-Manin connection, introduced earlier by E. Getzler, on the relative cyclic homology of a flat family of associative algebras over a central base ring. We introduce and study `free-product deformations' of an associative algebra, a new type of deformation over a not necessarily commutative base ring. Natural examples of free-product deformations arise from preprojective algebras and group algebras for compact surface groups.

Curved infinity-algebras and their characteristic classes

In this paper we study a natural extension of Kontsevich's characteristic class construction for A-infinity and L-infinity algebras to the case of curved algebras. These define homology classes on a variant of his graph homology which allows vertices of valence >0. We compute this graph homology, which is governed by star-shaped graphs with odd-valence vertices. We also classify nontrivially curved cyclic A-infinity and L-infinity algebras over a field up to gauge equivalence, and show that these are essentially reduced to algebras of dimension at most two with only even-ary operations. We apply the reasoning to compute stability maps for the homology of Lie algebras of formal vector fields. Finally, we explain a generalization of these results to other types of algebras, using the language of operads.

On the asymptotic S_n-structure of invariant differential operators on symplectic manifolds

We consider the space of polydifferential operators on n functions on symplectic manifolds invariant under symplectic automorphisms, whose study was initiated by Mathieu in 1995. Permutations of inputs yield an action of S_n, which extends to an action of S_{n+1}. We study this structure viewing n as a parameter, in the sense of Deligne's category. For manifolds of dimension 2d, we show that the isotypic part of this space of <= 2d+1-th tensor powers of the reflection representation h=C^n of S_{n+1} is spanned by Poisson polynomials. We also prove a partial converse, and compute explicitly the isotypic part of <= 4-th tensor powers of the reflection representation. We give generating functions for the isotypic parts corresponding to Young diagrams which only differ in the length of the top row, and prove that they are rational functions whose denominators are related to hook lengths of the diagrams obtained by removing the top row. This also gives such a formula for the same isotypic parts of induced representations from Z/(n+1) to S_{n+1} where n is viewed as a parameter. We apply this to the Poisson and Hochschild homology associated to the singularity C^{2dn}/S_{n+1}. Namely, the Brylinski spectral sequence from the zeroth Poisson homology of the S_{n+1}-invariants of the n-th Weyl algebra of C^{2d} with coefficients in the whole Weyl algebra degenerates in the 2d+1-th tensor power of h, as well as its fourth tensor power. Furthermore, the kernel of this spectral sequence has dimension on the order of 1/n^3 times the dimension of the homology group.

A new construction of cyclic homology

Based on the ideas of Cuntz and Quillen, we give a simple construction of cyclic homology of unital algebras in terms of the noncommutative de Rham complex and a certain differential similar to the equivariant de Rham differential. We describe the Connes exact sequence in this setting. We define equivariant Deligne cohomology and construct, for each n > 0, a natural map from cyclic homology of an algebra to the GL_n-equivariant Deligne cohomology of the variety of n-dimensional representations of that algebra. The bridge between cyclic homology and equivariant Deligne cohomology is provided by extended cyclic homology, which we define and compute here, based on the extended noncommutative de Rham complex introduced previously by the authors.

A new linear quotient of C^4 admitting a symplectic resolution

We show that the quotient C^4/G admits a symplectic resolution for G = (Q_8 x D_8)/(Z/2) < Sp(4,C). Here Q_8 is the quaternionic group of order eight and D_8 is the dihedral group of order eight, and G is the quotient of their direct product which identifies the nontrivial central elements -1 of each. It is equipped with the tensor product of the defining two-dimensional representations of Q_8 and D_8. This group is also naturally a subgroup of the wreath product group of Q_8 by S_2. We compute the singular locus of the family of commutative spherical symplectic reflection algebras deforming C^4/G. We also discuss preliminary investigations on the more general question of classifying linear quotients V / G admitting symplectic resolutions.
