Geometrization of principal series representations of reductive groups

In geometric representation theory, one often wishes to describe representations realized on spaces of invariant functions as trace functions of equivariant perverse sheaves. In the case of principal series representations of a connected split reductive group G over a local field, there is a description of families of these representations realized on spaces of functions on G invariant under the translation action of the Iwahori subgroup, or a suitable smaller compact open subgroup, studied by Howe, Bushnell and Kutzko, Roche, and others. In this paper, we construct categories of perverse sheaves whose traces recover the families associated to regular characters of T(F_q[[t]]), and prove conjectures of Drinfeld on their structure. We also propose conjectures on the geometrization of families associated to more general characters.

Normality and quadraticity for special ample line bundles on toric varieties arising from root systems

We prove that special ample line bundles on toric varieties arising from root systems are projectively normal. Here the maximal cones of the fans correspond to the Weyl chambers, and special means that the bundle is torus-equivariant such that the character of the line bundle that corresponds to a maximal Weyl chamber is dominant with respect to that chamber. Moreover, we prove that the associated semigroup rings are quadratic.

Computational approaches to Poisson traces associated to finite subgroups of Sp(2n,C)

We reduce the computation of Poisson traces on quotients of symplectic vector spaces by finite subgroups of symplectic automorphisms to a finite one, by proving several results which bound the degrees of such traces as well as the dimension in each degree. This applies more generally to traces on all polynomial functions which are invariant under invariant Hamiltonian flow. We implement these approaches by computer together with direct computation for infinite families of groups, focusing on complex reflection and abelian subgroups of GL(2,C) < Sp(4,C), Coxeter groups of rank <= 3 and A_4, B_4=C_4, and D_4, and subgroups of SL(2,C).

Poisson traces and D-modules on Poisson varieties

To every Poisson algebraic variety X over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, we canonically attach a right D-module M(X) on X. If X is affine, solutions of M(X) in the space of algebraic distributions on X are Poisson traces on X, i.e., distributions invariant under Hamiltonian flows. When X has finitely many symplectic leaves, we prove that M(X) is holonomic. Thus, when X is affine and has finitely many symplectic leaves, the space of Poisson traces on X is finite-dimensional. As an application, we deduce that noncommutative filtered algebras whose associated graded algebras are coordinate rings of Poisson varieties with finitely many symplectic leaves have finitely many irreducible finite-dimensional representations. The appendix, by Ivan Losev, strengthens this to show that in such algebras, there are finitely many prime ideals, and they are all primitive. More generally, to any morphism phi: X -> Y and any quasicoherent sheaf of Poisson modules N on X, we attach a right D-module M_phi(X, N) on X, and prove that it is holonomic if X has finitely many symplectic leaves, phi is finite, and N is coherent. As an application, the finiteness result for irreducible representations of noncommutative filtered algebras extends to the case where the associated graded algebra is not necessarily commutative, but is finitely generated as a module over its center, which is the coordinate ring of a Poisson variety with finitely many symplectic leaves. We also describe explicitly (in the settings of affine varieties and compact smooth manifolds) the space of Poisson traces on X when X=V/G, where V is symplectic and G is a finite group acting faithfully on V. In particular, we show that this space is finite-dimensional.

Differential operators and BV structures in noncommutative geometry

We introduce a new formalism of differential operators for a general associative algebra A. It replaces Grothendieck's notion of differential operator on a commutative algebra in such a way that derivations of the commutative algebra are replaced by DDer(A), the bimodule of double derivations. Our differential operators act not on the algebra A itself but rather on F(A), a certain `Fock space' associated to any noncommutative algebra A in a functorial way. The corresponding algebra D(F(A)), of differential operators, is filtered and gr D(F(A)), the associated graded algebra, is commutative in some `twisted' sense. The resulting double Poisson structure on gr D(F(A)) is closely related to the one introduced by Van den Bergh. Specifically, we prove that gr D(F(A))=F(T_A(DDer(A)), provided A is smooth. It is crucial for our construction that the Fock space F(A) carries an extra-structure of a wheelgebra, a new notion closely related to the notion of a wheeled PROP. There are also notions of Lie wheelgebras, and so on. In that language, D(F(A)) becomes the universal enveloping wheelgebra of a Lie wheelgebroid of double derivations. In the second part of the paper we show, extending a classical construction of Koszul to the noncommutative setting, that any Ricci-flat, torsion-free bimodule connection on DDer(A) gives rise to a second order (wheeled) differential operator, a noncommutative analogue of the BV-operator.

Traces on finite W-algebras

We compute the space of Poisson traces on a classical W-algebra modulo an arbitrary central character, i.e., linear functionals on such an algebra invariant under Hamiltonian derivations. This space identifies with the top cohomology of the corresponding Springer fiber. As a consequence, we deduce that the zeroth Hochschild homology of the corresponding quantum W-algebra modulo a central character identifies with the top cohomology of the corresponding Springer fiber. This implies that the number of irreducible finite-dimensional representations of this algebra is bounded by the dimension of this top cohomology, which was established earlier by C. Dodd using reduction to positive characteristic. Finally, we prove that the entire cohomology of the Springer fiber identifies with the so-called Poisson-de Rham homology (defined previously by the authors) of the classical W-algebra modulo a central character.

Connes-Kreimer quantizations and PBW theorems for pre-Lie algebras

The Connes-Kreimer renormalization Hopf algebras are examples of a canonical quantization procedure for pre-Lie algebras. We give a simple construction of this quantization using the universal enveloping algebra for so-called twisted Lie algebras (Lie algebras in the category of symmetric sequences of k-modules). As an application, we obtain a simple proof of the (quantized) PBW theorem for Lie algebras which come from a pre-Lie product (over an arbitrary commutative ring). More generally, we observe that the quantization and the PBW theorem extend to pre-Lie algebras in arbitrary abelian symmetric monoidal categories with limits. We also extend a PBW theorem of Stover for connected twisted Lie algebras to this categorical setting.

Looping of the numbers game and the alcoved hypercube

We study in detail the so-called looping case of Mozes's game of numbers, which concerns the (finite) orbits in the reflection representation of affine Weyl groups situated on the boundary of the Tits cone. We give a simple proof that all configurations in the orbit are obtainable from each other by playing the numbers game, and give a strategy for going from one configuration to another. The strategy gives rise to a partition of the finite Weyl group into finitely many graded posets, one for each extending vertex of the associated extended Dynkin diagram. These are selfdual and mutually isomorphic, and dual to the triangulation of the unit hypercube by reflecting hyperplanes, studied by many authors. Unlike the weak and Bruhat orders, the top degree is cubic in the number of vertices of the graph. We explicitly compute the Hilbert polynomial of the poset.

On dominance and minuscule Weyl group elements

Fix a Dynkin diagram and let p be a coweight. When does there exist an element w of the corresponding Weyl group such that w is p-minuscule and w(p) is dominant? We answer this question for general Coxeter groups. We express and prove these results using a variant of Mozes's game of numbers.

Zeroth Poisson homology of symmetric powers of isolated quasihomogeneous surface singularities

Let X be a surface with an isolated singularity at the origin, given by the equation Q(x,y,z)=0, where Q is a weighted-homogeneous polynomial. In particular, this includes the Kleinian surfaces X = C^2/G for G < SL(2,C) finite. Let Y be the n-th symmetric power of X. We compute the zeroth Poisson homology of Y, as a graded vector space with respect to the weight grading. In the Kleinian case, this confirms a conjecture of Alev, that the zeroth Poisson homology of the n-th symmetric power of C^2/G is isomorphic to the zeroth Hochschild homology of the n-th symmetric power of the algebra of G-invariant differential operators on C. That is, the Brylinski spectral sequence degenerates in this case. In the elliptic case, this yields the zeroth Hochschild homology of symmetric powers of the elliptic algebras with three generators modulo their center, for the parameter equal to all but countably many points of the elliptic curve.

Poisson algebras and Yang-Baxter equations

We connect generalizations of Poisson algebras with the classical and associative Yang-Baxter equations. In particular, we prove that solutions of the classical Yang-Baxter equation on a vector space V are equivalent to ``twisted'' Poisson algebra structures on the tensor algebra TV. Here, ``twisted'' refers to working in the category of graded vector spaces equipped with S_n-actions in degree n. We show that the associative Yang-Baxter equation is similarly related to the double Poisson algebras of Van den Bergh. We generalize to L-infinity-algebras and define ``infinity'' versions of Yang-Baxter equations and double Poisson algebras. The proofs are based on the observation that Lie is essentially unique among quadratic operads having a certain distributivity property over the commutative operad; we also give a L-infinity generalization. In the appendix, we prove a generalized version of Schur-Weyl duality, which is related to the use of nonstandard S_n-module structures on the n-th tensor power of V.

Calabi-Yau Frobenius algebras

We define Calabi-Yau and periodic Frobenius algebras over arbitrary base commutative rings. We define a Hochschild analogue of Tate cohomology, and show that the "stable Hochschild cohomology" of periodic CY Frobenius algebras has a Batalin-Vilkovisky and Frobenius algebra structure. Such algebras include (centrally extended) preprojective algebras of (generalized) Dynkin quivers, and group algebras of classical periodic groups. We use this theory to compute (for the first time) the Hochschild cohomology of many algebras related to quivers, and to simplify the description of known results. Furthermore, we compute the maps on cohomology from extended Dynkin preprojective algebras to the Dynkin ones, which relates our CY property (for Frobenius algebras) to that of Ginzburg (for algebras of finite Hochschild dimension).

Superpotentials and Higher Order Derivations

We consider algebras defined from quivers with relations that are k-th order derivations of a superpotential, generalizing results of Dubois-Violette to the quiver case. We give a construction compatible with Morita equivalence, and show that many important algebras arise in this way, including McKay correspondence algebras for GL_n for all n, and four-dimensional Sklyanin algebras. More generally, we show that any N-Koszul, (twisted) Calabi-Yau algebra must have a (twisted) superpotential, and construct its minimal resolution in terms of derivations of the (twisted) superpotential. This yields an equivalence between N-Koszul twisted Calabi-Yau algebras A and algebras defined by a superpotential such that an associated complex is a bimodule resolution of A. Finally, we apply these results to give a description of the moduli space of four-dimensional Sklyanin algebras using the Weil representation of SL_2(Z/4).

The necklace Lie coalgebra and renormalization algebras

We give a natural monomorphism from the necklace Lie coalgebra, defined for any quiver, to Connes and Kreimer's Lie coalgebra of trees, and extend this to a map from a certain quiver-theoretic Hopf algebra to Connes and Kreimer's renormalization Hopf algebra, as well as to pre-Lie versions. These results are direct analogues of Turaev's results in 2004, by replacing algebras of loops on surfaces with algebras of paths on quivers. We also factor the morphism through an algebra of chord diagrams and explain the geometric version. We then explain how all of the Hopf algebras are uniquely determined by the pre-Lie structures, and discuss noncommutative versions of the Hopf algebras.

Concrete and abstract structure of the sandpile group for thick trees with loops

We answer a question of Laszlo Babai concerning the abelian sandpile model. Given a graph, the model yields a finite abelian group of recurrent configurations which is closely related to the combinatorial Laplacian of the graph. We explicitly describe the group elements and operations in the case of thick trees with loops--that is, graphs which are obtained from trees by setting arbitrary edge multiplicities and adding loops at vertices. We do this both concretely (by describing the so-called recurrent and identity configurations) and abstractly (by computing the group's abstract structure), and define maps identifying the two.

Moyal quantization and stable homology of necklace Lie algebras

We compute the stable homology of necklace Lie algebras associated with quivers and give a construction of stable homology classes from certain $A_\infty$-categories. Our construction is a generalization of the construction of homology classes of moduli spaces of curves due to M. Kontsevich. In the second part of the paper we produce a Moyal-type quantization of the symmetric algebra of a necklace Lie algebra. The resulting quantized algebra has natural representations in the usual Moyal quantization of polynomial algebras.

A Hopf algebra quantizing a necklace Lie algebra canonically associated to a quiver

V. Ginzburg, and independently R. Bocklandt and L. Le Bruyn, defined an infinite-dimensional "necklace" Lie algebra canonically associated to any quiver. Following suggestions of V. Turaev, P. Etingof, and Ginzburg, we define a cobracket and prove that it defines a Lie bialgebra structure. We then present a Hopf algebra quantizing this Lie bialgebra, and prove that it is a Hopf algebra satisfying the PBW property. We present representations into spaces of differential operators on representations of the quiver, which quantize the trace representations of the Lie algebra given by Ginzburg.
