Low-Scale Seesaw and the CP Violation in Neutrino Oscillations

We consider a version of the low-scale type I seesaw mechanism for generating small neutrino masses, as an alternative to the standard seesaw scenario. It involves two right-handed (RH) neutrinos $ν_{1R}$ and $ν_{2R}$ having a Majorana mass term with mass $M$, which conserves the lepton charge $L$. The RH neutrino $ν_{2R}$ has lepton-charge conserving Yukawa couplings $g_{\ell 2}$ to the lepton and Higgs doublet fields, while small lepton-charge breaking effects are assumed to induce tiny lepton-charge violating Yukawa couplings $g_{\ell 1}$ for $ν_{1R}$, $l=e,μ,τ$. In this approach the smallness of neutrino masses is related to the smallness of the Yukawa coupling of $ν_{1R}$ and not to the large value of $M$: the RH neutrinos can have masses in the few GeV to a few TeV range. The Yukawa couplings $|g_{\ell 2}|$ can be much larger than $|g_{\ell 1}|$, of the order $|g_{\ell 2}| \sim 10^{-4} - 10^{-2}$, leading to interesting low-energy phenomenology. We consider a specific realisation of this scenario within the Froggatt-Nielsen approach to fermion masses. In this model the Dirac CP violation phase $δ$ is predicted to have approximately one of the values $δ\simeq π/4,\, 3π/4$, or $5π/4,\, 7π/4$, or to lie in a narrow interval around one of these values. The low-energy phenomenology of the considered low-scale seesaw scenario of neutrino mass generation is also briefly discussed.

Flavor-Safe Light Squarks in Higgs-Anomaly Mediation

We consider a simple setup with light squarks which is free from the gravitino and SUSY flavor problems. In our setup, a SUSY breaking sector is sequestered from the matter and gauge sectors, and it only couples to the Higgs sector directly with $\mathcal{O}(100)\,$TeV gravitino. Resulting mass spectra of sfermions are split: the first and second generation sfermions are light as $\mathcal{O}(1)\,$TeV while the third generation sfermions are heavy as $\mathcal{O}(10)\,$TeV. The light squarks of $\mathcal{O}(1)\,$TeV can be searched at the (high-luminosity) LHC and future collider experiments. Our scenario can naturally avoid too large flavor-changing neutral currents and it is consistent with the $ε_K$ constraint. Moreover, there are regions explaining the muon $g-2$ anomaly and bottom-tau/top-bottom-tau Yukawa coupling unification simultaneously.

Gauged Peccei-Quinn Symmetry - A Case of Simultaneous Breaking of SUSY and PQ Symmetry

Recently, a simple prescription to embed the global Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry into a gauged $U(1)$ symmetry has been proposed. There, explicit breaking of the global PQ symmetry expected in quantum gravity are highly suppressed due to the gauged PQ symmetry. In this paper, we apply the gauged PQ mechanism to models where the global PQ symmetry and supersymmetry (SUSY) are simultaneously broken at around $\mathcal{O}(10^{11-12})$\,GeV. Such scenario is motivated by an intriguing coincidence between the supersymmetry breaking scale which explains the observed Higgs boson mass by the gravity mediated sfermion masses, and the PQ breaking scale which evades all the astrophysical and the cosmological constraints. As a concrete example, we construct a model which consists of a simultaneous supersymmetry/PQ symmetry breaking sector based on $SU(2)$ dynamics and an additional PQ symmetry breaking sector based on $SU(N)$ dynamics. We also show that new vector-like particles are predicted in the TeV range in the minimum model, which can be tested by the LHC experiments.

Double inflation as a single origin of primordial black holes for all dark matter and LIGO observations

Primordial Black Hole (PBH) is one of the leading non-particle candidates for dark matter (DM). Although several observations severely constrain the amount of PBHs, it is recently pointed out that there is an uncertainty on the microlensing constraints below $\sim 10^{-10} M_\odot$ which was ignored originally but may weaken the constraints significantly. In this paper, facing this uncertainty, we investigate the possibility that PBHs can make up all DM in a broad mass spectrum. Moreover, we propose a concrete inflation model which can simultaneously produce PBHs for all DM in a broad mass spectrum around $\mathcal O(10^{-13}) M_\odot$ and PBHs for LIGO events in a sharp mass spectrum at $\mathcal O(10) M_\odot$.

Right-handed Neutrino Dark Matter in a U(1) Extension of the Standard Model

We consider minimal $U(1)$ extensions of the Standard Model in which one of the right-handed neutrinos is charged under the new gauge symmetry and plays the role of dark matter. In particular, we perform a detailed phenomenological study for the case of a $U(1)_{(B-L)_3}$ flavoured $B-L$ symmetry. If perturbativity is required up to high-scales, we find an upper bound on the dark matter mass of $m_χ\lesssim2$ TeV, significantly stronger than that obtained in simplified models. Furthermore, if the $U(1)_{(B-L)_3}$ breaking scalar has significant mixing with the SM Higgs, there are already strong constraints from direct detection. On the other hand, there remains significant viable parameter space in the case of small mixing, which may be probed in the future via LHC $Z^\prime$ searches and indirect detection. We also comment on more general anomaly-free symmetries consistent with a TeV-scale RH neutrino dark matter candidate, and show that if two heavy RH neutrinos for leptogenesis are also required, one is naturally led to a single-parameter class of $U(1)$ symmetries.

LHC Search for Right-handed Neutrinos in $Z^\prime$ Models

We consider right-handed neutrino pair production in generic $Z^\prime$ models. We propose a new, model-independent analysis using final states containing a pair of same-sign muons. A key aspect of this analysis is the reconstruction of the RH neutrino mass, which leads to a significantly improved sensitivity. Within the $U(1)_{(B-L)_{3}}$ model, we find that at the HL-LHC it will be possible to probe RH neutrino masses in the range $0.2\lesssim M_{N_R} \lesssim 1.1\,$TeV.

Direct Detection of Ultralight Dark Matter via Astronomical Ephemeris

A novel idea of the direct detection to search for a ultralight dark matter based on the interaction between the dark matter and a nucleon is proposed. Solar system bodies feel the dark matter wind and it acts as a resistant force opposing their motions. The astronomical ephemeris of solar system bodies is so precise that it has a strong capability to detect a dark matter whose mass is much lighter than O(1) eV. We have estimated the resistant force based on the calculation of the elastic scattering cross section between the dark matter and the bodies beyond the Born approximation, and show that the astronomical ephemeris indeed put a very strong constraint on the interaction between the dark matter and a nucleon, depending on how smoothly the ultralight dark matter is distributed at the scale smaller than the celestial bodies in our solar system.

$\mathcal O(10) M_\odot$ primordial black holes and string axion dark matter

LIGO-Virgo collaboration has found black holes as heavy as $M \sim 30M_\odot$ through the detections of the gravitational waves emitted during their mergers. Primordial black holes (PBHs) produced by inflation could be an origin of such events. While it is tempting to presume that these PBHs constitute all Dark Matter (DM), there exists a number of constraints for PBHs with $\mathcal{O} (10) M_\odot$ which contradict with the idea of PBHs as all DM. Also, it is known that weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) that is a common DM candidate is almost impossible to coexist with PBHs. These observations motivate us to pursue another candidate of DM. In this paper, we assume that the string axion solving the strong CP problem makes up all DM, and discuss the coexistence of string axion DM and inflationary PBHs for LIGO events.

Flavoured $B-L$ Local Symmetry and Anomalous Rare $B$ Decays

We consider a flavoured $B-L$ gauge symmetry under which only the third generation fermions are charged. Such a symmetry can survive at low energies (~TeV) while still allowing for two superheavy right-handed neutrinos, consistent with neutrino masses via see-saw and leptogenesis. We describe a mechanism for generating Yukawa couplings in this model and also discuss the low-energy phenomenology. Interestingly, the new gauge boson could explain the recent hints of lepton universality violation at LHCb, with a gauge coupling that remains perturbative up to the Planck scale. Finally, we discuss more general $U(1)$ symmetries and show that there exist only two classes of vectorial $U(1)$ that are both consistent with leptogenesis and remain phenomenologically viable at low-energies.

Current Status of Top-Specific Variant Axion Model

The invisible variant axion model is very attractive as it is free from the domain wall problem. This model requires at least two Higgs doublets at the electroweak scale, with one Higgs doublet carrying a nonzero Peccei-Quinn (PQ) charge and the other being neutral under the PQ $\text U(1)$ symmetry. We consider a scenario where only the right-handed top quark is charged under the PQ symmetry and couples with the PQ-charged Higgs doublet. As a general prediction of this model, the top quark can decay to the observed standard model-like Higgs boson $h$ and the charm or up quark, $t\to h~ c/u$, which recently exhibit slight excesses at LHC Run-I and Run-II. It will soon be testable at the LHC Run-II. If the rare top decay excess stays at the observed central value, we show that $\tan β\sim 1$ or smaller is preferred by the Higgs data. The chiral nature of the Higgs flavor-changing interaction is a distinctive feature, and can be tested using the angular distribution of the $t \to ch$ decays at the LHC.

Anomaly-free local horizontal symmetry and anomaly-full rare B-decays

The largest global symmetry that can be made local in the Standard Model + 3$ν_R$ while being compatible with Pati-Salam unification is $SU(3)_H\times U(1)_{B-L}$. The gauge bosons of this theory would induce flavour effects involving both quarks and leptons, and are a potential candidate to explain the recent reports of lepton universality violation in rare B meson decays. In this letter we characterise this type of models and show how they can accommodate the data and naturally be within reach of direct searches.

Neutrino CP phases from Sneutrino Chaotic Inflation

We study if the minimal sneutrino chaotic inflation is consistent with a flavor symmetry of the Froggatt-Nielsen type, to derive testable predictions on the Dirac and Majorana CP violating phases, $δ$ and $α$. For successful inflation, the two right-handed neutrinos, i.e., the inflaton and stabilizer fields, must be degenerate in mass. First we find that the lepton flavor symmetry structure becomes less manifest in the light neutrino masses in the seesaw mechanism, and this tendency becomes most prominent when right-handed neutrinos are degenerate. Secondly, the Dirac CP phase turns out to be sensitive to whether the shift symmetry breaking depends on the lepton flavor symmetry. When the flavor symmetry is imposed only on the stabilizer Yukawa couplings, distributions of the CP phases are peaked at $δ\simeq \pm π/4, \pm 3π/4$ and $α= 0$, while the vanishing and maximal Dirac CP phases are disfavored. On the other hand, when the flavor symmetry is imposed on both the inflaton and stabilizer Yukawa couplings, it is rather difficult to explain the observed neutrino data, and those parameters consistent with the observation prefer the vanishing CP phases $δ= 0, π$ and $α= 0$.

Muon g-2 in MSSM Gauge Mediation Revisited

The Higgs boson of 125 GeV requires large stop masses, leading to the large $μ$-parameter in most cases of gauge mediation. On the other hand, the explanation for the muon $g-2$ anomaly needs small slepton and neutralino/chargino masses. Such disparity in masses may be obtained from a mass splitting of colored and non-colored messenger fields. However, even if the required small slepton and neutralino/chargino masses are realized, all parameter regions consistent with the muon g-2 are excluded by the recent updated ATLAS result on the wino search in the case that the messenger fields are in ${\bf 5}+\bar {\bf 5}$ representations of SU(5). It is also revealed that the messenger fields in ${\bf 10} + \overline{\bf 10}$ or ${\bf 24}$ representation can not explain the muon g-2 anomaly. We show, giving a simple example model, that the above confliction is solved if there is an additional contribution to the Higgs soft mass which makes the $μ$-parameter small. We also show that the required Higgs B-term for the electroweak symmetry breaking is consistently generated by radiative corrections from gaugino loops.

A "Gauged" $U(1)$ Peccei-Quinn Symmetry

The Peccei-Quinn (PQ) solution to the strong $CP$ problem requires an anomalous global $U(1)$ symmetry, the PQ symmetry. The origin of such a convenient global symmetry is quite puzzling from the theoretical point of view in many aspects. In this paper, we propose a simple prescription which provides an origin of the PQ symmetry. There, the global $U(1)$ PQ symmetry is virtually embedded in a gauged $U(1)$ PQ symmetry. Due to its simplicity, this mechanism can be implemented in many conventional models with the PQ symmetry.

Inflationary primordial black holes for the LIGO gravitational wave events and pulsar timing array experiments

Primordial black holes (PBHs) are one of the candidates to explain the gravitational wave (GW) signals observed by the LIGO detectors. Among several phenomena in the early Universe, cosmic inflation is a major example to generate PBHs from large primordial density perturbations. In this paper, we discuss the possibility to interpret the observed GW events as mergers of PBHs which are produced by cosmic inflation. The primordial curvature perturbation should be large enough to produce a sizable amount of PBHs and thus we have several other probes to test this scenario. We point out that the current pulsar timing array (PTA) experiments already put severe constraints on GWs generated via the second-order effects, and that the observation of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) puts severe restriction on its $μ$ distortion. In particular, it is found that the scalar power spectrum should have a very sharp peak at $k \sim 10^{6}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ to fulfill the required abundance of PBHs while evading constraints from the PTA experiments together with the $μ$ distortion. We propose a mechanism which can realize such a sharp peak. In the future, simple inflation models that generate PBHs via almost Gaussian fluctuations could be probed/excluded.

Revisiting gravitino dark matter in thermal leptogenesis

In this paper, we revisit the gravitino dark matter scenario in the presence of the bilinear $R$-parity violating interaction. In particular, we discuss a consistency with the thermal leptogenesis. For a high reheating temperature required for the thermal leptogenesis, the gravitino dark matter tends to be overproduced, which puts a severe upper limit on the gluino mass. As we will show, a large portion of parameter space of the gravitino dark matter scenario has been excluded by combining the constraints from the gravitino abundance and the null results of the searches for the superparticles at the LHC experiments. In particular, the models with the stau (and other charged slepton) NLSP has been almost excluded by the searches for the long-lived charged particles at the LHC unless the required reheating temperature is somewhat lowered by assuming, for example, a degenerated right-handed neutrino mass spectrum.

Inflationary Primordial Black Holes as All Dark Matter

Following a new microlensing constraint on primordial black holes (PBHs) with $\sim10^{20}$--$10^{28}\,\mathrm{g}$~[1], we revisit the idea of PBH as all Dark Matter (DM). We have shown that the updated observational constraints suggest the viable mass function for PBHs as all DM to have a peak at $\simeq 10^{20}\,\mathrm{g}$ with a small width $σ\lesssim 0.1$, by imposing observational constraints on an extended mass function in a proper way. We have also provided an inflation model that successfully generates PBHs as all DM fulfilling this requirement.

Dirac CP phase in the neutrino mixing matrix and the Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism with ${\rm \bf det} \bf [M_ν]=0$

We discuss the Dirac CP violating phase $δ_{CP}$ in the Froggatt-Nielsen model for a neutrino mass matrix $M_ν$ imposing a condition ${\rm det} [M_ν]=0$. This additional condition restricts the CP violating phase $δ_{CP}$ drastically. We find that the phase $δ_{CP}$ is predicted in the region of $\pm (0.4- 2.9)$ radian, which is consistent with the recent T2K and NO$ν$A data. There is a remarkable correlation between $δ_{CP}$ and $\sin^2θ_{23}$. The phase $δ_{CP}$ converges on $\sim \pm π/2$ if $\sin^2θ_{23}$ is larger than $0.5$. Thus, accurate measurements of $\sin^2θ_{23}$ are important for a test of our model. The effective mass $m_{ee}$ for the neutrinoless double beta decay is predicted in the rage of $3.3-4.0$ meV.
