Perfect Lattice Actions for Quarks and Gluons

We use perturbation theory to construct perfect lattice actions for quarks and gluons. The renormalized trajectory for free massive quarks is identified by blocking directly from the continuum. We tune a parameter in the renormalization group transformation such that for 1-d configurations the perfect action reduces to the nearest neighbor Wilson fermion action. The fixed point action for free gluons is also obtained by blocking from the continuum. For 2-d configurations it reduces to the standard plaquette action. Classically perfect quark and gluon fields, quark-gluon composite operators and vector and axial vector currents are constructed as well. Also the quark-antiquark potential is derived from the classically perfect Polyakov loop. The quark-gluon and 3-gluon perfect vertex functions are determined to leading order in the gauge coupling. We also construct a new block factor $n$ renormalization group transformation for QCD that allows to extend our results beyond perturbation theory. For weak fields it leads to the same perfect action as blocking from the continuum. For arbitrarily strong 2-d Abelian gauge fields the Manton plaquette action is classically perfect for this transformation.

Perfect Lattice Actions with and without Chiral Symmetry

We use perturbation theory to construct perfect lattice actions for fermions and gauge fields by blocking directly from the continuum. When one uses a renormalization group transformation that preserves chiral symmetry the resulting lattice action for massless fermions is chirally symmetric but nonlocal. When the renormalization group transformation breaks chiral symmetry, the lattice action becomes local but chiral symmetry is explicitly broken. In particular, starting with a chiral gauge theory in the continuum one either obtains a lattice theory which is gauge invariant but nonlocal, or a local theory with explicitly broken gauge invariance. In both cases the spectrum of the lattice theory is identical with the one of the continuum and the anomaly is correctly reproduced. We also apply our techniques to vector-like theories. In particular we propose a new renormalization group transformation for QCD and we optimize its parameters for locality of the perfect action.

Testing Haldane's Conjecture in the O(3) Model by a Meron Cluster Simulation

Twelve years ago, Haldane formulated his famous conjecture for 1-d antiferromagnetic quantum spin chains. In the context of the 2-d O(3) model with a θterm, it predicts a phase transition at θ= π, which has not yet been verified reliably. To simulate this we use the Wolff cluster algorithm together with an improved estimator for the topological charge distribution. Each cluster carries integer or half integer charge. Clusters with charge 1/2 are identified with merons. At θ= πthey are inactive, such that the mass gap vanishes. We obtain critical exponents which are consistent with predictions from the k=1 WZNW model, therefore confirming a second order phase transition.

Meron-Cluster Simulation of the $θ$-Vacuum in the 2-d $O(3)$-Model

The 2-d $O(3)$-model with a $θ$-vacuum term is formulated in terms of Wolff clusters. Each cluster carries a half-integer topological charge. The clusters with charge $\pm 1/2$ are identified as merons. At $θ= π$ the merons are bound in pairs inducing a second order phase transition at which the mass-gap vanishes. The construction of an improved estimator for the topological charge distribution makes numerical simulations of the phase transition feasible. The measured critical exponents agree with those of the $k = 1$ Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten model. Our results are consistent with Haldane's conjecture for 1-d antiferromagnetic quantum spin chains.

A Perturbative Construction of Lattice Chiral Fermions

We perform a renormalization group transformation to construct a lattice theory of chiral fermions. The field variables of the continuum theory are averaged over hypercubes to define lattice fields. Integrating out the continuum variables in perturbation theory we derive a chirally invariant effective action for the lattice fields. This is consistent with the Nielsen-Niniomiya theorem because the effective action is nonlocal. We also construct the axial current on the lattice and we show that the axial anomaly of the continuum theory is reproduced in the Schwinger model. This shows that chiral fermions can be regularized on the lattice.

Perfect Lattice Actions for the Gross-Neveu Model

We apply the method of Hasenfratz and Niedermayer to analytically construct perfect lattice actions for the Gross--Neveu model. In the large $N$ limit these actions display an exactly perfect scaling, i.e. cut-off artifacts are completely eliminated even at arbitrarily short correlation length. Also the energy spectrum coincides with the spectrum in the continuum and continuous translation and rotation symmetries are restored in physical observables. This is the first (analytic) construction of an exactly perfect lattice action at finite correlation length.

Perfect Lattice Actions for the Gross-Neveu Model at large N

Fixed point actions for free and interacting staggered lattice fermions are constructed by iterating renormalization group transformations. At large N the fixed point action for the Gross-Neveu model is a perfect action in the sense of Hasenfratz and Niedermayer, i.e. cut-off effects are completely eliminated. In particular, the fermionic 1-particle energy spectrum of the lattice theory is identical with the one of the continuum even for arbitrarily small correlation lengths. The cut-off effects of the chiral condensate are eliminated using a perfect operator. (The paper is stored as a ps-file containing both the text and 5 figures.)

Fixed Point Actions for Lattice Fermions

The fixed point actions for Wilson and staggered lattice fermions are determined by iterating renormalization group transformations. In both cases a line of fixed points is found. Some points have very local fixed point actions. They can be used to construct perfect lattice actions for asymptotically free fermionic theories like QCD or the Gross-Neveu model. The local fixed point actions for Wilson fermions break chiral symmetry, while in the staggered case the remnant $U(1)_e \otimes U(1)_o$ symmetry is preserved. In addition, for Wilson fermions a nonlocal fixed point is found that corresponds to free chiral fermions. The vicinity of this fixed point is studied in the Gross-Neveu model using perturbation theory.

Fixed Point Actions for Wilson Fermions

Iterating renormalization group transformations for lattice fermions the Wilson action is driven to fixed points of the renormalization group. A line of fixed points is found and the fixed point actions are computed analytically. They are local and may be used to improve scaling in lattice QCD. The action at the line's endpoint is chirally invariant and still has no fermion doubling. The Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem is evaded because in this case the fixed point action is nonlocal. The use of this action for a construction of lattice chiral fermions is discussed.

String Representation of the Abelian Higgs Theory and Aharonov-Bohm Effect on the Lattice

The partition function of the $4D$ lattice Abelian Higgs theory is represented as the sum over world sheets of Nielsen--Olesen strings. The creation and annihilation operators of the strings are constructed. The topological long--range interaction of the strings and charged particles is shown to exist; it is proportional to the linking number of the string world sheet and particle world trajectory.

Cosmic Strings on the Lattice

We develop a formalism for the quantization of topologically stable excitations in the 4-dimensional abelian lattice gauge theory. The excitations are global and local (Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen) strings and monopoles. The operators of creation and annihilation of string states are constructed; the string Green functions are represented as a path integral over random surfaces. Topological excitations play an important role in the early universe. In the broken symmetry phase of the $U(1)$ spin model, closed global cosmic strings arise, while in the Higgs phase of the noncompact gauge-Higgs model, local cosmic strings are present. The compact gauge-Higgs model also involves monopoles. Then the strings can break if their ends are capped by monopoles. The topology of the Euclidean string world sheets are studied by numerical simulations.

A determination of the low energy parameters of the 2-d Heisenberg antiferromagnet

We perform numerical simulations of the 2-d antiferromagnetic quantum Heisenberg model using an efficient cluster algorithm. Comparing the finite size and finite temperature effects of various quantities with recent results from chiral perturbation theory we are able to determine the low energy parameters of the system very precisely. We find $e_0 = - 0.6693(1) J/a^2$ for the ground state energy density, ${\cal M}_s = 0.3074(4)/a^2$ for the staggered magnetization, $\hbar c = 1.68(1) J a$ for the spin wave velocity and $ρ_s = 0.186(4) J$ for the spin stiffness. Our results agree with experimental data for the undoped precursor insulators of high-$T_c$ superconductors.

The confined-deconfined interface tension, wetting, and the spectrum of the transfer matrix

The reduced tension $σ_{cd}$ of the interface between the confined and the deconfined phase of $SU(3)$ pure gauge theory is determined from numerical simulations of the first transfer matrix eigenvalues. At $T_c = 1/L_t$ we find $σ_{cd} = 0.139(4) T_c^2$ for $L_t = 2$. The interfaces show universal behavior because the deconfined-deconfined interfaces are completely wet by the confined phase. The critical exponents of complete wetting follow from the analytic interface solutions of a $\Z(3)$-symmetric $Φ^4$ model in three dimensions. We find numerical evidence that the confined-deconfined interface is rough.

SU(N) Gauge Theories with C-Periodic Boundary Conditions: II. Small Volume Dynamics

The dynamics of SU(N) gauge theories, especially for N=3, in a small C-periodic box are investigated. We identify the fields that mimimize the energy---the torons---and determine which of these ``classical'' vacua are stable quantum mechanically. The stable torons break cubic symmetry, which has interesting consequences on the spectrum. At any of the stable torons there are also quartic modes. Since all C-periodic boundary conditions are gauge-equivalent, we choose a convenient version, for which the quartic modes are constant modes, and compute the effective Hamiltonian to one loop in perturbation theory.

Capillary Waves in Binder's Approach to the Interface Tension

In Binder's approach the reduced interface tension sigma of the Ising model in the broken phase is determined from the finite volume effects of the partition function Z(M) at fixed total magnetization M. For small |M| the partition function of a system of size L^d with periodic boundary conditions is dominated by configurations with two interfaces, such that Z(M) ~ exp(- 2 sigma L^{d-1}). Capillary wave fluctuations of the interfaces correct this result to Z(M) ~ exp(- 2 sigma L^{d-1}) with x = -1. The knowledge of the pre-exponential behavior allows an improved fit of numerical data, and a determination of the interface stiffness.

The confined-deconfined Interface Tension and the Spectrum of the Transfer Matrix

The reduced tension $σ_{cd}$ of the interface between the confined and the deconfined phase of $SU(3)$ pure gauge theory is related to the finite size effects of the first transfer matrix eigenvalues. A lattice simulation of the transfer matrix spectrum at the critical temperature $T_c = 1/L_t$ yields $σ_{cd} = 0.139(4) T_c^2$ for $L_t = 2$. We found numerical evidence that the deconfined-deconfined domain walls are completely wet by the confined phase, and that the confined-deconfined interfaces are rough.

Continuum Gauge Fields from Lattice Gauge Fields

On the lattice some of the salient features of pure gauge theories and of gauge theories with fermions in complex representations of the gauge group seem to be lost. These features can be recovered by considering part of the theory in the continuum. The prerequisite for that is the construction of continuum gauge fields from lattice gauge fields. Such a construction, which is gauge covariant and complies with geometrical constructions of the topological charge on the lattice, is given in this paper. The procedure is explicitly carried out in the $U(1)$ theory in two dimensions, where it leads to simple results.

Chern-Simons term in the 4-dimensional SU(2) Higgs model

Using a variation of Lueschers geometric charge definition for SU(2) lattice gauge theory, we have managed to give a geometric expression for it's Chern-Simons ter. From this definition we have checked the periodic structure. we determined the Chern-Simons density for symmetric and asymmetric lattices near the critical region in the SU(2) Higgs model. The data indicate that tunneling is increased at high temperature.
