Screening Effects in Superfluid Nuclear and Neutron Matter within Brueckner Theory

Effects of medium polarization are studied for $^1S_0$ pairing in neutron and nuclear matter. The screening potential is calculated in the RPA limit, suitably renormalized to cure the low density mechanical instability of nuclear matter. The selfenergy corrections are consistently included resulting in a strong depletion of the Fermi surface. All medium effects are calculated based on the Brueckner theory. The $^1S_0$ gap is determined from the generalized gap equation. The selfenergy corrections always lead to a quenching of the gap, which is enhanced by the screening effect of the pairing potential in neutron matter, whereas it is almost completely compensated by the antiscreening effect in nuclear matter.

Solution of the microscopic gap equation for a slab of nuclear matter with the Paris NN-potential

The gap equation in the $^1S_0$-channel is solved for a nuclear slab with the separable form of the Paris potential. The gap equation is considered in the model space in terms of the effective pairing interaction which is found in the complementary subspace. The absolute value of the gap $Δ$ turned out to be very sensitive to the cutoff $K_{max}$ in the momentum space in the equation for the effective interaction. It is necessary to take $K_{max}=160-180 fm^{-1}$ to guarantee 1% accuracy for $Δ$. The gap equation itself is solved directly, without any additional approximations. The solution reveals the surface enhancement of the gap $Δ$ which was earlier found with an approximate consideration. A strong surface-volume interplay was found also implying a kind of the proximity effect. The diagonal matrix elements of $Δ$ turned out to be rather close to the empirical values for heavy atomic nuclei.

From Brueckner Approach to Skyrme-type Energy Density Functional

A Skyrme-like effective interaction is built up from the equation of state of nuclear matter. The latter is calculated in the framework of the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approximation with two and three body forces. A complete Skyrme parametrization requires a fit of the neutron and proton effective masses and also the Landau parameters. The new parametrization is probed on the properties of a set of closed-shell and closed-subshell nuclei, including binding energies and charge radii.

Isospin splitting of the nucleon mean field

The isospin splitting of the nucleon mean field is derived from the Brueckner theory extended to asymmetric nuclear matter. The Argonne V18 has been adopted as bare interaction in combination with a microscopic three body force. The isospin splitting of the effective mass is determined from the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock self-energy: It is linear acording to the Lane ansatz and such that $m^*_n > m^*_p$ for neutron-rich matter. The symmetry potential is also determined and a comparison is made with the predictions of the Dirac-Brueckner approach and the phenomenological interactions. The theoretical predictions are also compared with the empirical parametrizations of neutron and proton optical-model potentials based on the experimental nucleon-nucleus scattering and the phenomenological ones adopted in transport-model simulations of heavy-ion collisions. The direct contribution of the rearrangement term due to three-body forces to the single particle potential and symmetry potential is discussed.

Effect of Three-body Interaction on Phase Transition of Hot Asymmetric Nuclear Matter

The properties and the isospin dependence of the liquid-gas phase transition in hot asymmetric nuclear matter have been investigated within the framework of the finite temperature Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach extended to include the contribution of a microscopic three-body force. A typical Van der Waals structure has been observed in the calculated isotherms (of pressure) for symmetric nuclear matter implying the presence of the liquid-gas phase transition. The critical temperature of the phase transition is calculated and its dependence on the proton-to-neutron ratio is discussed. It is shown that the three-body force gives a repulsive contribution to the nuclear equation of state and reduces appreciably the critical temperature and the mechanical instable region. At fixed temperature and density the pressure of asymmetric nuclear matter increases monotonically as a function of isospin asymmetry. In addition, it turns out that the domain of mechanical instability for hot asymmetric nuclear matter gradually shrinks with increasing asymmetry and temperature. We have compared our results with the predictions of other theoretical models especially the Dirac Brueckner approach. A possible explanation for the discrepancy between the values of the critical temperature predicted by the present non-relativistic Brueckner calculations including the three-body force and the relativistic Dirac-Brueckner method is given.

Nuclear Three-body Force Effect on a Kaon Condensate in Neutron Star Matter

We explore the effects of a microscopic nuclear three-body force on the threshold baryon density for kaon condensation in chemical equilibrium neutron star matter and on the composition of the kaon condensed phase in the framework of the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach. Our results show that the nuclear three-body force affects strongly the high-density behavior of nuclear symmetry energy and consequently reduces considerably the critical density for kaon condensation provided that the proton strangeness content is not very large. The dependence of the threshold density on the symmetry energy becomes weaker as the proton strangeness content increases. The kaon condensed phase of neutron star matter turns out to be proton-rich instead of neutron-rich. The three-body force has an important influence on the composition of the kaon condensed phase. Inclusion of the three-body force contribution in the nuclear symmetry energy results in a significant reduction of the proton and kaon fractions in the kaon condensed phase which is more proton-rich in the case of no three-body force. Our results are compared to other theoretical predictions by adopting different models for the nuclear symmetry energy. The possible implications of our results for the neutron star structure are also briefly discussed.

1S0 Proton and Neutron Superfluidity in beta-stable Neutron Star Matter

We investigate the effect of a microscopic three-body force on the proton and neutron superfluidity in the $^1S_0$ channel in $β$-stable neutron star matter. It is found that the three-body force has only a small effect on the neutron $^1S_0$ pairing gap, but it suppresses strongly the proton $^1S_0$ superfluidity in $β$-stable neutron star matter.

A new treatment of the in-medium chiral condensates

A new formalism to calculate the in-medium chiral condensate is presented. At lower densities, this approach leads to a linear expression. If we demand a compatibility with the famous model-independent result, then the pion-nucleon sigma term should be six times the average current mass of light quarks. QCD-like interactions may slow the decreasing behavior of the condensate with increasing densities, compared with the linear extrapolation, if densities are lower than twice the nuclear saturation density. At higher densities, the condensate vanishes inevitably.

Neutrino mean free path in neutron stars

The neutrino propagation in neutron stars is studied in the framework of the linear response method. The medium effects are treated in the non-relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach either in the mean-field approximation or in the RPA. The residual interaction is expressed in terms of the Landau parameters extracted from the equation of state of spin- and isospin-polarized nuclear matter. The Brueckner theory including three-body forces is used for determining the equation of state. Numerical predictions for the response function of nuclear matter in $β$-equilibrium and the neutrino mean free path are presented in a range of baryonic densities and temperatures. The main results are a dominance of the charge-exchange component over the scattering component and an enhancement of the neutrino mean free path induced by nuclear correlations.

Chiral Condensates in Quark and nuclear Matter

We present a novel treatment for calculating the in-medium quark condensates. The advantage of this approach is that one does not need to make further assumptions on the derivatives of model parameters with respect to the quark current mass. The normally accepted model-independent result in nuclear matter is naturally reproduced. The change of the quark condensate induced by interactions depends on the incompressibility of nuclear matter. When it is greater than 260 MeV, the density at which the condensate vanishes is higher than that from the linear extrapolation. For the chiral condensate in quark matter, a similar model-independent linear behavior is found at lower densities, which means that the decreasing speed of the condensate in quark matter is merely half of that in nuclear matter if the pion-nucleon sigma commutator is six times the average current mass of u and d quarks. The modification due to QCD-like interactions is found to slow the decreasing speed of the condensate, compared with the linear extrapolation.

Screening Effects on $^1S_0$ Pairing in Neutron Matter

The $^1S_0$ superfluidity of neutron matter is studied in the framework of the generalized Gorkov equation. The vertex corrections to the pairing interaction and the self-energy corrections are introduced and approximated on the same footing in the gap equation. A suppression of the pairing gap by more than 50% with respect to the BCS prediction is found, which deeply changes the scenario for the dynamical and thermal evolution of neutron stars.

Surface behaviour of the pairing gap in a slab of nuclear matter

The surface behaviour of the pairing gap previously studied for semi-infinite nuclear matter is analyzed in the slab geometry. The gap-shape function is calculated in two cases: (a) pairing with the Gogny force in a hard-wall potential and (b) pairing with the separable Paris interaction in a Saxon-Woods mean-field potential. It is shown that the surface features are preserved in the case of slab geometry, being almost independent of the width of the slab. It is also demonstrated that the surface enhancement is strengthened as the absolute value of chemical potential $|μ|$ decreases which simulates the approach to the nucleon drip line.

Landau parameters of nuclear matter in the spin and spin-isospin channels

The equation of state of spin and isospin polarized nuclear matter is determined in the framework of the Brueckner theory including three-body forces. The Landau parameters in the spin and spin-isospin sectors are derived as a function of the baryonic density. The results are compared with the Gamow-Teller collective modes. The relevance of $G_0$ and $G_0'$ for neutron stars is shortly discussed, including the magnetic susceptibility and the neutron star cooling.

Neutrino Mean Free Path in Neutron Stars

The Landau parameters of nuclear matter and neutron matter are extracted from the Brueckner theory including three-body forces. The dynamical response function to weak neutrino current is calculated in terms of the Landau Parameters in the RPA limit. Then, the neutrino mean free path in neutron stars is calculated for different conditions of density and temperature.

Spin-polarized states of nuclear matter

The equations of state of spin-polarized nuclear matter and pure neutron matter are studied in the framework of the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock theory including a three-body force. The energy per nucleon $E_A(δ)$ calculated in the full range of spin polarization $δ = \frac{ρ_{\uparrow}-ρ_{\downarrow}}ρ$ for symmetric nuclear matter and pure neutron matter fulfills a parabolic law. In both cases the spin-symmetry energy is calculated as a function of the baryonic density along with the related quantities such as the magnetic susceptibility and the Landau parameter $G_0$. The main effect of the three-body force is to strongly reduce the degenerate Fermi gas magnetic susceptibility even more than the value with only two body force. The EOS is monotonically increasing with the density for all spin-aligned configurations studied here so that no any signature is found for a spontaneous transition to a ferromagnetic state.

Microscopic three-body force for asymmetric nuclear matter

Brueckner calculations including a microscopic three-body force have been extended to isospin asymmetric nuclear matter. The effects of the three-body force on the equation of state and on the single-particle properties of nuclear matter are discussed with a view to possible applications in nuclear physics and astrophysics. It is shown that, even in the presence of the three-body force, the empirical parabolic law of the energy per nucleon vs isospin asymmetry $β=(N-Z)/A$ is fulfilled in the whole asymmetry range $0\leβ\le 1$ up to high densities. The three-body force provides a strong enhancement of symmetry energy increasing with the density in good agreement with relativistic approaches. The Lane's assumption that proton and neutron mean fields linearly vary vs the isospin parameter is violated at high density in the presence of the three-body force. Instead the momentum dependence of the mean fields is rather insensitive to three body force which brings about a linear isospin deviation of the neutron and proton effective masses. The isospin effects on multifragmentation events and collective flows in heavy-ion collisions are briefly discussed along with the conditions for direct URCA processes to occur in the neutron-star cooling.

Interplay of Three-Body Interactions in the EOS of Nuclear Matter

The equation of state of symmetric nuclear matter has been investigated within Brueckner approach adopting the charge-dependent Argonne $V_{18}$ two-body force plus a microscopic three-body force based on a meson-exchange model. The effects on the equation of state of the individual processes giving rise to the three-body force are explored up to high baryonic density. It is found that the major role is played by the competition between the strongly repulsive $(σ, ω)$ exchange term with virtual nucleon-antinucleon excitation and the large attractive contribution due to $(σ, ω)$ exchange with $N^*(1440)$ resonance excitation. The net result is a repulsive term which shifts the saturation density corresponding to the only two-body force much closer to the empirical value, while keeping constant the saturation energy per particle. The contribution from $(π, ρ)$ exchange 3BF is shown to be attractive and rather small. The analysis of the separate three-body force contributions allows to make a comparison with the prediction of Dirac-Brueckner approach which is supposed to incorporate via the {\it dressed} Dirac spinors the same virtual nucleon-antinucleon excitations as in the present three-body force. The numerical results suggest that the three-body force components missing from the Dirac-Brueckner approach are not negligible, especially at high density. The calculation of the nuclear mean field and the effective mass shows that the three-body force affects to a limited extent such properties.
