Can weakly bound heavy nuclei with very large neutron excess exist?

A realistic model is suggested based on the quasiparticle Lagrange version of the self-consistent Finite Fermi Systems theory supplemented with the microscopically calculated surface parameters of the Landau-Migdal interaction amplitude. The latter are expressed in terms of the off-shell T-matrix of free NN-scattering and show a strong dependence on the chemical potential of a nucleus under consideration in the drip line vicinity. This effect could result in shifting the neutron drip line position to very large values of the neutron excess.

Transition from BCS pairing to Bose-Einstein condensation in low-density asymmetric nuclear matter

We study the isospin-singlet neutron-proton pairing in bulk nuclear matter as a function of density and isospin asymmetry within the BCS formalism. In the high-density, weak-coupling regime the neutron-proton paired state is strongly suppressed by a minor neutron excess. As the system is diluted, the BCS state with large, overlapping Cooper pairs evolves smoothly into a Bose-Einstein condensate of tightly bound neutron-proton pairs (deuterons). In the resulting low-density system a neutron excess is ineffective in quenching the pair correlations because of the large spatial separation of the deuterons and neutrons. As a result, the Bose-Einstein condensation of deuterons is weakly affected by an additional gas of free neutrons even at very large asymmetries.

The Local Potential Approximation for the Brueckner G-matrix

The Brueckner G-matrix for a slab of nuclear matter is analyzed in the singlet $^1S$ and triplet $^3S+^3D$ channels. The complete Hilbert space is split into two domains, the model subspace $S_0$, in which the two-particle propagator is calculated explicitly, and the complementary one, $S'$, in which the local potential approximation is used. This kind of local approximation was previously found to be quite accurate for the $^1S$ pairing problem. A set of model spaces $S_0(E_0)$ with different values of the cut-off energy $E_0$ is considered, $E_0$ being the upper limit for the single-particle energies of the states belonging to $S_0$. The independence of the G-matrix of $E_0$ is assumed as a criterion of validity of the local potential approximation. Such independence is obtained within few percent for $E_0=10 ÷20$ MeV for both the channels under consideration.

Nuclear Matter EOS with a Three-body Force

The effect of a microscopic three-body force on the saturation properties of nuclear matter is studied within the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach. The calculations show a decisive improvement of the saturation density along with an overall agreement with the empirical saturation point. With the three-body force the symmetry energy turns more rapidly increasing with density, which allows for the direct URCA process to occur in $β$-stable neutron star matter. The influence of the three-body force on the nuclear mean field does not diminish the role of the ground state correlations.

Asymmetric Nuclear Matter from Extended Brueckner-Hartree-Fock Approach

The properties of isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter have been investigated in the framework of the extended Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approximation at zero temperature. Self-consistent calculations using the Argonne $V_{14}$ interaction are reported for several asymmetry parameters $β= \frac{N - Z}{A}$ ranging from symmetric nuclear matter to pure neutron matter. The binding energy per nucleon fulfills the $β^2$ law in the whole asymmetry range. The symmetry energy is calculated for different densities and discussed in comparison with other predictions. At the saturation point it is in fairly good agreement with the empirical value. The present approximation, based on the Landau definition of quasiparticle energy, is investigated in terms of the Hugenholtz-Van Hove theorem, which is proved to be fulfilled with a good accuracy at various asymmetries. The isospin dependence of the single-particle properties is discussed, including mean field, effective mass, and mean free path of neutrons and protons. The isospin effects in nuclear physics and nuclear astrophysics are briefly discussed.

Self-energy Effects in the Superfluidity of Neutron Matter

The superfluidity of neutron matter in the channel $^1 S_0$ is studied by taking into account the effect of the ground-state correlations in the self-energy. To this purpose the gap equation has been solved within the generalized Gorkov approach. A sizeable suppression of the energy gap is driven by the quasi-particle strength around the Fermi surface.

Nuclear Pairing in the T=0 channel revisited

Recent published data on the isoscalar gap in symmetric nuclear matter using the Paris force and the corresponding BHF single particle dispersion are corrected leading to an extremely high proton-neutron gap of $Δ\sim 8$ MeV at $ρ\sim 0.5ρ_0$. Arguments whether this value can be reduced due to screening effects are discussed. A density dependent delta interaction with cut off is adjusted so as to approximately reproduce the nuclear matter values with the Paris force.

A simple model for the microscopic effective pairing interaction

The microscopic effective pairing interaction in the $^1S_0$-channel is investigated for two different values of the chemical potential $μ$ starting from the separable form of the Paris NN-potential. It is shown that, within a high accuracy, this effective interaction can be approximated by the off-shell free T-matrix taken at the negative energy $E=2μ$.

Isospin singlet (pn) pairing and quartetting contribution to the binding energy of nuclei

Isospin singlet (pn) pairing as well as quartetting in nuclei is expected to arise near the symmetry line $N=Z$. Empirical values can be deduced from the nuclear binding energies applying special filters. Within the local density approximation, theoretical estimates for finite nuclei are obtained from results for the condensation energy of asymmetric nuclear matter. It is shown that the isospin singlet condensation energy drops down abruptly for |N-Z|~4 for medium nuclei in the region A=40. Furthermore, alpha-like quartetting and the influence of excitations are discussed.

Surface behaviour of the pairing gap in semi-infinite nuclear matter

The $^1S_0$-pairing gap in semi-infinite nuclear matter is evaluated microscopically using the effective pairing interaction recently found explicitly in the coordinate representation starting from the separable form of the Paris NN-potential. Instead of direct iterative solution of the gap equation, a new method proposed by V.A.Khodel, V.V.Khodel and J.W.Clark was used which simplifies the procedure significantly. The gap $Δ$ obtained in our calculations exibits a strong variation in the surface region with a pronounced maximum near the surface.
