Dynamics on fences

Homeomorphisms of the Cantor set play a central role in topology, dynamical systems and descriptive set theory. In parallel, several classes of fence-like spaces - such as the hairy Cantor set, hairy arcs, Cantor bouquets in complex dynamics, the Lelek fan in topology and Fraïssé fence in descriptive set theory - have recently been studied for their rich structural and dynamical properties. In this paper, we introduce a general construction that associates to each homeomorphism of the Cantor set a canonically defined homeomorphism of a corresponding fence space. This construction lifts dynamical properties from the Cantor set to these fence-like spaces, allowing one to systematically transfer features such as minimality, recurrence, and orbit structure. As a consequence, we obtain a unified framework for studying dynamics on a broad class of fence-like spaces and establish new connections between their topological structure and induced dynamical behavior.

Dynamics of composition operators induced by odometers

We study the linear dynamics of composition operators induced by measurable transformations on finite measure spaces, with particular emphasis on operators induced by odometers. Our first main result shows that, on a finite measure space, supercyclicity of a composition operator implies hypercyclicity. This phenomenon has no analogue in several classical settings and highlights a rigidity specific to the finite-measure context. We then focus on composition operators induced by odometers and show that many dynamical properties that are distinct for weighted backward shifts collapse in this setting. In particular, for such operators, supercyclicity, Li-Yorke chaos, hypercyclicity, weak mixing, and Devaney chaos are all equivalent. In contrast to this collapse, we show that the classical equivalence between Devaney chaos and the Frequent Hypercyclicity Criterion for weighted backward shifts fails for odometers. Specifically, we construct a mixing, chaotic, and distributionally chaotic composition operator that does not satisfy the Frequent Hypercyclicity Criterion. This combination of rigidity and separation demonstrates that the dynamical behavior of composition operators induced by odometers differs sharply from that of weighted backward shifts.

Generic isomorphism classes of abelian groups

We prove that the universal solenoid is the generic (in the sense of Baire category) connected compact metrizable abelian group. We also settle the dual problem in the sense of Pontryagin duality: $(\mathbb{Q},+)$, which is the dual of the universal solenoid, is the generic countably infinite torsion-free abelian group.

Dynamical pair assignments

Relations between points in the phase space are central to the study of topological dynamical systems. Since many of these relations share common properties, it is natural to study them within a unified framework. To this end, we introduce the concept of \textit{dynamical pair assignments} $\mathcal{P}$. We then introduce the notions of a dynamical system being $\mathcal{P}$-full and $\mathcal{P}$-realizable, which generalize several existing concepts in the field like CPE, weak mixing and UPE. Our results establish that the space of $\mathcal{P}$-full systems is always a Borel set, while the space of $\mathcal{P}$-realizable systems is Borel if and only if an associated natural rank is bounded.

Generalized Hyperbolicity, Stability and Expansivity for Operators on Locally Convex Spaces

We introduce and study the notions of (generalized) hyperbolicity, topological stability and (uniform) topological expansivity for operators on locally convex spaces. We prove that every generalized hyperbolic operator on a locally convex space has the finite shadowing property. Contrary to what happens in the Banach space setting, hyperbolic operators on Fréchet spaces may fail to have the shadowing property, but we find additional conditions that ensure the validity of the shadowing property. Assuming that the space is sequentially complete, we prove that generalized hyperbolicity implies the strict periodic shadowing property, but we also show that the hypothesis of sequential completeness is essential. We show that operators with the periodic shadowing property on topological vector spaces have other interesting dynamical behaviors, including the fact that the restriction of such an operator to its chain recurrent set is topologically mixing and Devaney chaotic. We prove that topologically stable operators on locally convex spaces have the finite shadowing property and the strict periodic shadowing property. As a consequence, topologically stable operators on Banach spaces have the shadowing property. Moreover, we prove that generalized hyperbolicity implies topological stability for operators on Banach spaces. We prove that uniformly topologically expansive operators on locally convex spaces are neither Li-Yorke chaotic nor topologically transitive. Finally, we characterize the notion of topological expansivity for weighted shifts on Fréchet sequence spaces. Several examples are provided.

Shift operators and their classification

We introduce a class of linear bounded invertible operators on Banach spaces, called shift operators, which comprises weighted backward shifts and models finite products of weighted backward shifts and dissipative composition operators. We classify vast families of these shift operators, including the ones generated by orthogonal, diagonalizable, rotation or hyperbolic matrices. and this classification yields verifiable conditions which we use to construct concrete examples of shift operators with a variety of dynamical properties. As a consequence, we show that, for large classes of shift operators, generalized hyperbolicity is equivalent to the shadowing property.

Local entropy theory and descriptive complexity

We investigate local entropy theory, particularly the property of having completely positive entropy (CPE), from a descriptive set-theoretic point of view. We aim to determine descriptive complexity of different families of dynamical systems with CPE. For a large class of compact $X$, we show that the family of dynamical systems on $X$ with CPE is complete coanalytic and hence not Borel. When we restrict our attention to dynamical systems having special properties such as the mixing property or the shadowing property, we obtain some contrasting behavior. In particular, the notion of CPE and the notion of uniform positive entropy, a Borel property, coincide for mixing maps on topological graphs. On the other hand, the class of mixing map on the Cantor space is coanalytic and not Borel. For dynamical systems with the shadowing property, the notions CPE and uniform positive entropy coincide regardless of the phase space.

Shift-like Operators on $L^p(X)$

In this article we develop a general technique which takes a known characterization of a property for weighted backward shifts and lifts it up to a characterization of that property for a large class of operators on $L^p(X)$. We call these operators ``shift-like''. The properties of interest include chaotic properties such as Li-Yorke chaos, hypercyclicity, frequent hypercyclicity as well as properties related to hyperbolic dynamics such as shadowing, expansivity and generalized hyperbolicity. Shift-like operators appear naturally as composition operators on $L^p(X)$ when the underlying space is a dissipative measure system. In the process of proving the main theorem, we provide some results concerning when a property is shared by a linear dynamical system and its factors.

A note on derivatives, expansions and $Π^1_1$-ranks

$Π_1^1$-ranks are a natural tool for studying coanalytic sets in descriptive set theory. In the book "Classical descriptive set theory", Kechris provided a technique to build $Π_1^1$-ranks using derivatives. In this note we will prove a variant of this result that is applicable to the $Γ$-rank. Some dynamical ranks, like the entropy rank can be stated in terms of the $Γ$-rank.

Chaos and frequent hypercyclicity for composition operators

The notions of chaos and frequent hypercyclicity enjoy an intimate relationship in linear dynamics. Indeed, after a series of partial results, it was shown by Bayart and Rusza in 2015 that for backward weighted shifts on $\ell_p(\mathbb{Z})$, the notions chaos and frequent hypercyclicity coincide. It is with some effort that one shows that these two notions are distinct. Bayart and Grivaux in 2007 constructed a non-chaotic frequently hypercyclic weighted shift on $c_0$. It was only in 2017 that Menet settled negatively whether every chaotic operator is frequently hypercylic. In this article, we show that for a large class of composition operators on $L^p$-spaces the notions of chaos and frequent hypercyclicity coincide. Moreover, in this particular class an invertible operator is frequently hypercyclic if and only if its inverse is frequently hypercyclic. This is in contrast to a very recent result of Menet where an invertible frequently hypercyclic operator on $\ell_1$ whose inverse is not frequently hypercyclic is constructed.

Shadowing, Finite Order Shifts and Ultrametric Spaces

Inspired by a recent novel work of Good and Meddaugh, we establish fundamental connections between shadowing, finite order shifts, and ultrametric complete spaces. We develop a theory of shifts of finite type for infinite alphabets. We call them shifts of finite order. We develop the basic theory of the shadowing property in general metric spaces, exhibiting similarities and differences with the theory in compact spaces. We connect these two theories in the setting of zero-dimensional complete spaces, showing that a uniformly continuous map of an ultrametric complete space has the finite shadowing property if, and only if, it is an inverse limit of a system of shifts of finite order satisfying the Mittag-Leffler Condition. Furthermore, in this context, we show that the shadowing property is equivalent to the finite shadowing property and the fulfillment of the Mittag-Leffler Condition in the inverse limit description of the system. As corollaries, we obtain that a variety of maps in ultrametric spaces have the shadowing property, such as similarities and, more generally, maps which themselves, or their inverses, have Lipschitz constant 1. Finally, we apply our results to the dynamics of $p$-adic integers and $p$-adic rationals.

Uniformly Positive Entropy of Induced Transformations

Let $(X,T)$ be a topological dynamical system consisting of a compact metric space $X$ and a continuous surjective map $T : X \to X$. By using local entropy theory, we prove that $(X,T)$ has uniformly positive entropy if and only if so does the induced system $(\cM(X),\wt{T})$ on the space of Borel probability measures endowed with the weak$^*$ topology. This result can be seen as a version for the notion of uniformly positive entropy of the corresponding result for topological entropy due to Glasner and Weiss.

Linear Dynamics Induced by Odometers

Weighted shifts are an important concrete class of operators in linear dynamics. In particular, they are an essential tool in distinguishing variety dynamical properties. Recently, a systematic study of dynamical properties of composition operators on $L^p$ spaces has been initiated. This class of operators includes weighted shifts and also allows flexibility in construction of other concrete examples. In this article, we study one such concrete class of operators, namely composition operators induced by measures on odometers. In particular, we study measures on odometers which induce mixing and transitive linear operators on $L^p$ spaces.

Generalized Hyperbolicity and Shadowing in $L^p$ spaces

It is rather well-known that hyperbolic operators have the shadowing property. In the setting of finite dimensional Banach spaces, having the shadowing property is equivalent to being hyperbolic. In 2018, Bernardes et al. constructed an operator with the shadowing property which is not hyperbolic, settling an open question. In the process, they introduced a class of operators which has come to be known as generalized hyperbolic operators. This class of operators seems to be an important bridge between hyperbolicity and the shadowing property. In this article, we show that for a large natural class of operators on $L^p(X)$ the notion of generalized hyperbolicity and the shadowing property coincide. We do this by giving sufficient and necessary conditions for a certain class of operators to have the shadowing property. We also introduce computational tools which allow construction of operators with and without the shadowing property. Utilizing these tools, we show how some natural probability distributions, such as the Laplace distribution and the Cauchy distribution, lead to operators with and without the shadowing property on $L^p(X)$.

The structure of random automorphisms of countable structures

In order to understand the structure of the `typical' element of an automorphism group, one has to study how large the conjugacy classes of the group are. When typical is meant in the sense of Baire category, a complete description of the size of the conjugacy classes has been given by Kechris and Rosendal. Following Dougherty and Mycielski we investigate the measure theoretic dual of this problem, using Christensen's notion of Haar null sets. When typical means random, that is, almost every with respect to this notion of Haar null sets, the behavior of the automorphisms is entirely different from the Baire category case. In this paper, we generalize the theorems of Dougherty and Mycielski about $S_\infty$ to arbitrary automorphism groups of countable structures isolating a new model theoretic property, the Cofinal Strong Amalgamation Property. As an application we show that a large class of automorphism groups can be decomposed into the union of a meager and a Haar null set.

The structure of random automorphisms of the random graph

We give a complete description of the size of the conjugacy classes of the automorphism group of the random graph with respect to Christensen's Haar null ideal. It is shown that every non-Haar null class contains a translated copy of a nonempty portion of every compact set and that there are continuum many non-Haar null conjugacy classes. Our methods also yield a new proof of an old result of Truss.

The structure of random homeomorphisms

In order to understand the structure of the "typical" element of a homeomorphism group, one has to study how large the conjugacy classes of the group are. When typical means generic in the sense of Baire category, this is well understood, see e.g. the works of Glasner and Weiss, and Kechris and Rosendal. Following Dougherty and Mycielski we investigate the measure theoretic dual of this problem, using Christensen's notion of Haar null sets. When typical means random, that is, almost every with respect to this notion of Haar null sets, the behaviour of the homeomorphisms is entirely different from the generic case. For $\text{Homeo}^+([0,1])$ we describe the non-Haar null conjugacy classes and also show that their union is co-Haar null, for $\text{Homeo}^+(\mathbb{S}^1)$ we describe the non-Haar null conjugacy classes, and for $\mathcal{U}(\ell^2)$ we show that, apart from the classes of the multishifts, all conjugacy classes are Haar null. As an application we affirmatively answer the question whether these groups can be written as the union of a meagre and a Haar null set.

The structure of random automorphisms of the rational numbers

In order to understand the structure of the "typical" element of an automorphism group, one has to study how large the conjugacy classes of the group are. For the case when typical is meant in the sense of Baire category, Truss proved that there is a co-meagre conjugacy class in Aut(Q, <), the automorphism group of the rational numbers. Following Dougherty and Mycielski we investigate the measure theoretic dual of this problem, using Christensen's notion of Haar null sets. We give a complete description of the size of the conjugacy classes of Aut(Q, <) with respect to this notion. In particular, we show that there exist continuum many non-Haar null conjugacy classes, illustrating that the random behaviour is quite different from the typical one in the sense of Baire category.
