Topological transivity and mixing of the composition operators

Let $X=(X,\mathcal{B},μ)$ be a $σ$-finite measure space and \mbox{$f:X\to X$} be a measurable transformation such that the composition operator $T_f:φ\mapsto φ\circ f$ is a bounded linear operator acting on $L^p(X,\mathcal{B},μ)$, $1\le p<\infty$. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition on $f$ for $T_f$ to be topologically transitive or topologically mixing. We also characterize the topological dynamics of composition operators induced by weighted shifts, non-singular odometers and inner functions. The results provided in this article hold for composition operators acting on more general Banach spaces of functions.

Generating infinite random graphs

We define a growing model of random graphs. Given a sequence of nonnegative integers $\{d_n\}_{n=0}^\infty$ with the property that $d_i\leq i$, we construct a random graph on countably infinitely many vertices $v_0,v_1\ldots$ by the following process: vertex $v_i$ is connected to a subset of $\{v_0,\ldots,v_{i-1}\}$ of cardinality $d_i$ chosen uniformly at random. We study the resulting probability space. In particular, we give a new characterization of random graph and we also give probabilistic methods for constructing infinite random trees.

Expansivity and Shadowing in Linear Dynamics

In the early 1970's Eisenberg and Hedlund investigated relationships between expansivity and spectrum of operators on Banach spaces. In this paper we establish relationships between notions of expansivity and hypercyclicity, supercyclicity, Li-Yorke chaos and shadowing. In the case that the Banach space is $c_0$ or $\ell_p$ ($1 \leq p < \infty$), we give complete characterizations of weighted shifts which satisfy various notions of expansivity. We also establish new relationships between notions of expansivity and spectrum. Moreover, we study various notions of shadowing for operators on Banach spaces. In particular, we solve a basic problem in linear dynamics by proving the existence of nonhyperbolic invertible operators with the shadowing property. This also contrasts with the expected results for nonlinear dynamics on compact manifolds, illuminating the richness of dynamics of infinite dimensional linear operators.

Bruckner--Garg-type results with respect to Haar null sets in $C[0,1]$

A set $\mathcal{A}\subset C[0,1]$ is \emph{shy} or \emph{Haar null } (in the sense of Christensen) if there exists a Borel set $\mathcal{B}\subset C[0,1]$ and a Borel probability measure $μ$ on $C[0,1]$ such that $\mathcal{A}\subset \mathcal{B}$ and $μ\left(\mathcal{B}+f\right) = 0$ for all $f \in C[0,1]$. The complement of a shy set is called a \emph{prevalent} set. We say that a set is \emph{Haar ambivalent} if it is neither shy nor prevalent. The main goal of the paper is to answer the following question: What can we say about the topological properties of the level sets of the prevalent/non-shy many $f\in C[0,1]$? The classical Bruckner--Garg Theorem characterizes the level sets of the generic (in the sense of Baire category) $f\in C[0,1]$ from the topological point of view. We prove that the functions $f\in C[0,1]$ for which the same characterization holds form a Haar ambivalent set. In an earlier paper we proved that the functions $f\in C[0,1]$ for which positively many level sets with respect to the Lebesgue measure $λ$ are singletons form a non-shy set in $C[0,1]$. The above result yields that this set is actually Haar ambivalent. Now we prove that the functions $f\in C[0,1]$ for which positively many level sets with respect to the occupation measure $λ\circ f^{-1}$ are not perfect form a Haar ambivalent set in $C[0,1]$. We show that for the prevalent $f\in C[0,1]$ for the generic $y\in f([0,1])$ the level set $f^{-1}(y)$ is perfect. Finally, we answer a question of Darji and White by showing that the set of functions $f \in C[0,1]$ for which there exists a perfect $P_f\subset [0,1]$ such that $f'(x) = \infty$ for all $x \in P_f$ is Haar ambivalent.

Some universality results for dynamical systems

We prove some "universality" results for topological dynamical systems. In particular, we show that for any continuous self-map $T$ of a perfect Polish space, one can find a dense, $T$-invariant set homeomorphic to the Baire space ${\mathbb N}^{\mathbb N}$; that there exists a bounded linear operator $U: \ell_1 \rightarrow \ell_1$ such that any linear operator $T$ from a separable Banach space into itself with $\Vert T\Vert\leq 1$ is a linear factor of $U$; and that given any $σ$-compact family ${\mathcal F}$ of continuous self-maps of a compact metric space, there is a continuous self-map $U_{\mathcal F}$ of ${\mathbb N}^{\mathbb N}$ such that each $T\in {\mathcal F}$ is a factor of $U_{\mathcal F}$.

Hausdorff and packing dimension of fibers and graphs of prevalent continuous maps

The notions of shyness and prevalence generalize the property of being zero and full Haar measure to arbitrary (not necessarily locally compact) Polish groups. The main goal of the paper is to answer the following question: What can we say about the Hausdorff and packing dimension of the fibers of prevalent continuous maps? Let $K$ be an uncountable compact metric space. We prove that the prevalent $f\in C(K,\mathbb{R}^d)$ has many fibers with almost maximal Hausdorff dimension. This generalizes a theorem of Dougherty and yields that the prevalent $f\in C(K,\mathbb{R}^d)$ has graph of maximal Hausdorff dimension, generalizing a result of Bayart and Heurteaux. We obtain similar results for the packing dimension. We show that for the prevalent $f\in C([0,1]^m,\mathbb{R}^d)$ the set of $y\in f([0,1]^m)$ for which $\dim_H f^{-1}(y)=m$ contains a dense open set having full measure with respect to the occupation measure $λ^m \circ f^{-1}$, where $\dim_H$ and $λ^m$ denote the Hausdorff dimension and the $m$-dimensional Lebesgue measure, respectively. We also prove an analogous result when $[0,1]^m$ is replaced by any self-similar set satisfying the open set condition. We cannot replace the occupation measure with Lebesgue measure in the above statement: We show that the functions $f\in C[0,1]$ for which positively many level sets are singletons form a non-shy set in $C[0,1]$. In order to do so, we generalize a theorem of Antunović, Burdzy, Peres and Ruscher. As a complementary result we prove that the functions $f\in C[0,1]$ for which $\dim_H f^{-1}(y)=1$ for all $y\in (\min f,\max f)$ form a non-shy set in $C[0,1]$. We also prove sharper results in which large Hausdorff dimension is replaced by positive measure with respect to generalized Hausdorff measures, which answers a problem of Fraser and Hyde.

Chaos and Indecomposability

We use recent developments in local entropy theory to prove that chaos in dynamical systems implies the existence of complicated structure in the underlying space. Earlier Mouron proved that if $X$ is an arc-like continuum which admits a homeomorphism $f$ with positive topological entropy, then $X$ contains an indecomposable subcontinuum. Barge and Diamond proved that if $G$ is a finite graph and $f:G \rightarrow G$ is any map with positive topological entropy, then the inverse limit space $\varprojlim(G,f)$ contains an indecomposable continuum. In this paper we show that if $X$ is a $G$-like continuum for some finite graph $G$ and $f:X \rightarrow X$ is any map with positive topological entropy, then $\varprojlim (X,f)$ contains an indecomposable continuum. As a corollary, we obtain that in the case that $f$ is a homeomorphism, $X$ contains an indecomposable continuum. Moreover, if $f$ has uniformly positive upper entropy, then $X$ is an indecomposable continuum. Our results answer some questions raised by Mouron and generalize the above mentioned work of Mouron and also that of Barge and Diamond. We also introduce a new concept called zigzag pair which attempts to capture the complexity of a dynamical systems from the continuum theoretic perspective and facilitates the proof of the main result.

Graph Theoretic Structure of Maps of the Cantor Space

In this paper we develop unifying graph theoretic techniques to study the dynamics and the structure of the space of homeomorphisms and the space of self-maps of the Cantor space. Using our methods, we give characterizations which determine when two homeomorphisms of the Cantor space are conjugate to each other. We also give a new characterization of the comeager conjugacy class of the space of homeomorphisms of the Cantor space. The existence of this class was established by Kechris and Rosendal and a specific element of this class was described concretely by Akin, Glasner and Weiss. Our characterization readily implies many old and new dynamical properties of elements of this class. For example, we show that no element of this class has a Li-Yorke pair, implying the well known Glasner-Weiss result that there is a comeager subset of homeomorphism space of the Cantor space each element of which has topological entropy zero. Our analogous investigation in the space of continuous self-maps of the Cantor space yields a surprising result: there is a comeager subset of the space of self-maps of the Cantor space such that any two elements of this set are conjugate to each other by an homeomorphism. Our description of this class also yields many old and new results concerning dynamics of a comeager subset of the space of continuous self-maps of the Cantor space.

A note on decidability of cellularity

A regular language L is said to be cellular if there exists a 1-dimensional cellular automaton CA such that L is the language consisting of the finite blocks associated with CA. It is shown that cellularity of a regular language is decidable using a new characterization of cellular languages formulated by Freiling, Goldstein and Moews and implied by a deep result of Boyle in symbolic dynamics.
