Enhanced breaking of heavy quark spin symmetry

Heavy quark spin symmetry is useful to make predictions on ratios of decay or production rates of systems involving heavy quarks. The breaking of spin symmetry is generally of the order of $O({Λ_{\rm QCD}/m_Q})$, with $Λ_{\rm QCD}$ the scale of QCD and $m_Q$ the heavy quark mass. In this paper, we will show that a small $S$- and $D$-wave mixing in the wave function of the heavy quarkonium could induce a large breaking in the ratios of partial decay widths. As an example, we consider the decays of the $Υ(10860)$ into the $χ_{bJ}ω\, (J=0,1,2)$, which were recently measured by the Belle Collaboration. These decays exhibit a huge breaking of the spin symmetry relation were the $Υ(10860)$ a pure $5S$ bottomonium state. We propose that this could be a consequence of a mixing of the $S$-wave and $D$-wave components in the $Υ(10860)$. Prediction on the ratio $Γ(Υ(10860)\toχ_{b0}ω)/Γ(Υ(10860)\toχ_{b2}ω)$ is presented assuming that the decay of the $D$-wave component is dominated by the coupled-channel effects.

Production of the bottom analogues and the spin partner of the X(3872) at hadron colliders

Using the Monte Carlo event generator tools Pythia and Herwig, we simulate the production of bottom/charm meson and antimeson pairs at hadron colliders in proton-proton/antiproton collisions. With these results, we derive an order-of-magnitude estimate for the production rates of the bottom analogues and the spin partner of the $X(3872)$ as hadronic molecules at the LHC and Tevatron experiments. We find that the cross sections for these processes are at the nb level, so that the current and future data sets from the Tevatron and LHC experiments offer a significant discovery potential. We further point out that the $X_b/X_{b2}$ should be reconstructed in the $γΥ(nS) (n=1,2,3)$, $Υ(1S)π^+π^-π^0$, or $χ_{bJ}π^+π^-$ instead of the $Υ(nS)π^+π^-$ final states.

${\bf B_s\to K^{(*)} \ell\bar ν}$, Angular Analysis, S-wave Contributions and ${\bf |V_{ub}|}$

We analyse the $\overline B_s^0\to K^+l^-\bar ν$ and $\overline B_s^0\to K^{*+}(\to Kπ) \ell^-\bar ν$ decays that are valuable for extracting the CKM matrix element $|V_{ub}|$. We calculate the differential and integrated partial widths in units of $|V_{ub}|^2$ based on various calculations of hadronic form factors and in particular the latest Lattice QCD calculation of the $B_s\to K^*$ form factors. For the decay $\overline B_s^0 \to Kπ\ell\bar ν$, we formulate the general angular distributions with the inclusion of the various partial-wave $Kπ$ contributions. Using the results for the $Kπ$ scalar form factor calculated from unitarized chiral perturbation theory, we explore the S-wave effects on angular distribution variables and demonstrate that they may not be negligible, considering the high precision expected in future measurements. We also briefly discuss the impact of the S-wave $ππ$ contributions in the $B^-\to π^+π^-\ell \bar ν$ decay and provide estimates for the mode $B^-\to K^+K^-\ell \bar ν$. The studies of these channels in future can not only be used to determine $|V_{ub}|$, but may also provide valuable information on the $Kπ$ and $ππ$ phase shifts.

Unraveling models of CP violation through electric dipole moments of light nuclei

We show that the proposed measurements of the electric dipole moments of light nuclei in storage rings would put strong constraints on models of flavor-diagonal CP violation. Our analysis is exemplified by a comparison of the Standard Model including the QCD theta term, the minimal left-right symmetric model, a specific version of the so-called aligned two-Higgs doublet model, and briefly the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. By using effective field theory techniques we demonstrate to what extend measurements of the electric dipole moments of the nucleons, the deuteron, and helion could discriminate between these scenarios. We discuss how measurements of electric dipole moments of other systems relate to the light-nuclear measurements.

A study of the parity-odd nucleon-nucleon potential

We investigate the parity-violating nucleon-nucleon potential as obtained in chiral effective field theory. By using resonance saturation we compare the chiral potential to the more traditional one-meson exchange potential. In particular, we show how parameters appearing in the different approaches can be compared with each other and demonstrate that analyses of parity violation in proton-proton scattering within the different approaches are in good agreement. In the second part of this work, we extend the parity-violating potential to next-to-next-to-leading order. We show that generally it includes both one-pion- and two-pion-exchange corrections, but the former play no significant role. The two-pion-exchange corrections depend on five new low-energy constants which only become important if the leading-order weak pion-nucleon constant $h_π$ turns out to be very small.

Finite-volume corrections to the CP-odd nucleon matrix elements of the electromagnetic current from the QCD vacuum angle

Nucleon electric dipole moments originating from strong CP-violation are being calculated by several groups using lattice QCD. We revisit the finite volume corrections to the CP-odd nucleon matrix elements of the electromagnetic current, which can be related to the electric dipole moments in the continuum, in the framework of chiral perturbation theory up to next-to-leading order taking into account the breaking of Lorentz symmetry. A chiral extrapolation of the recent lattice results of both the neutron and proton electric dipole moments is performed, which results in $d_n=(-2.7\pm1.2)\times10^{-16}eθ_0$cm and $d_p=(2.1\pm1.2)\times10^{-16}eθ_0$cm.

$Y(4260)$ as the first $S$-wave open charm vector molecular state?

Since its first observation in 2005, the vector charmonium $Y(4260)$ has turned out to be one of the prime candidates for an exotic state in the charmonium spectrum. It was recently proposed that the $Y(4260)$ should have a prominent $D_1\bar{D}+c.c.$ molecular component that is strongly correlated with the production of the charged $Z_c(3900)$. In this paper we demonstrate that the nontrivial cross section line shapes of $e^+e^-\to J/ψππ$ and $h_cππ$ can be naturally explained by the molecular scenario. As a consequence we find a significantly smaller mass for the $Y(4260)$ than previous studied. In the $e^+e^-\to \bar D D^*π+c.c.$ process, with the inclusion of an additional $S$-wave $\bar D^*π$ contribution constrained from data on the $D\bar D^*$ invariant mass distribution, we obtain a good agreement with the data of the angular distributions. We also predict an unusual line shape of $Y(4260)$ in this channel that may serve as a smoking gun for a predominantly molecular nature of $Y(4260)$. Improved measurements of these observables are therefore crucial for a better understanding of the structure of this famous resonance.

Strong and radiative decays of the $D_{s0}^*(2317)$ and $D_{s1}(2460)$

Since their discovery in 2003, the open charm states $D_{s0}^*(2317)$ and $D_{s1}(2460)$ provide a challenge to the conventional quark model. In recent years, theoretical evidence has been accumulated for both states in favor of a predominantly $DK$ and $D^*K$ molecular nature, respectively. However, a direct experimental proof of this hypothesis still needs to be found. Since radiative decays are generally believed to be sensitive to the inner structure of the decaying particles, we study in this work the radiative and strong decays of both the $D_{s0}^*(2317)$ and $D_{s1}(2460)$, as well as of their counterparts in the bottom sector. While the strong decays are indeed strongly enhanced for molecular states, the radiative decays are of similar order of magnitude in different pictures. Thus, the experimental observable that allows one to conclusively quantify the molecular components of the $D_{s0}^*(2317)$ and $D_{s1}(2460)$ is the hadronic width, and not the radiative one, in contradistinction to common belief. We also find that radiative decays of the sibling states in the bottom sector are significantly more frequent than the hadronic ones. Based on this, we identify their most promising discovery channels.

Production of charm-strange hadronic molecules at the LHC

We explore the inclusive hadroproduction of the D_{s0}^*(2317), D_{s1}(2460) and D_{sJ}(2860) states at the Large Hadron Collider under the assumption that these hadrons are S-wave meson-meson molecules. In addition, the D_{s2}(2910), a predicted bound state of the D_2(2460)K system, is also discussed. We first derive a factorisation formula for the production rates based on effective field theory. Then we make use of two MC event generators, Herwig and Pythia, to simulate the production of pairs of charmed mesons and kaons. Using effective field theory to handle the final state interaction among the meson pairs, we give an estimate of the inclusive production rates for these particles at the order-of-magnitude accuracy. Our results show that the cross sections for the pp --> D_{s0}^*(2317) and pp --> D_{s1}(2460) at the LHC are at O(1 μb) level, while the ones for the pp --> D_{sJ}(2860) and the pp --> D_{s2}(2910) are smaller by about one order of magnitude. Such estimates suggest that these four exotic states could be copiously produced at the LHC. A study of these states at the LHC will thus provide valuable information on hadron spectroscopy as well as hadron interactions.

B_l4 decays and the extraction of |V_ub|

The Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |V_ub| is not well determined yet. It can be extracted from both inclusive or exclusive decays, like B --> pi (rho) l nu-bar_l. However, the exclusive determination from B --> rho l nu-bar_l, in particular, suffers from a large model dependence. In this paper, we propose to extract |V_ub| from the four-body semileptonic decay B --> pi pi l nu-bar_l, where the form factors for the pion-pion system are treated in dispersion theory. This is a model-independent approach that takes into account the pi-pi rescattering effects, as well as the effect of the rho meson. We demonstrate that both finite-width effects of the rho meson as well as scalar pi-pi contributions can be considered completely in this way.

Breaking and restoration of rotational symmetry on the lattice for bound state multiplets

We explore the breaking of rotational symmetry on the lattice for bound state energies and practical methods for suppressing this breaking. We demonstrate the general problems associated with lattice discretization errors and finite-volume errors using an $α$ cluster model for $^8$Be and $^{12}$C. We consider the two and three $α$-particle systems and focus on the lowest states with non-zero angular momentum which split into multiplets corresponding to different irreducible representations of the cubic group. We examine the dependence of such splittings on the lattice spacing and box size. We find that lattice spacing errors are closely related to the commensurability of the lattice with the intrinsic length scales of the system. We also show that rotational symmetry breaking effects can be significantly reduced by using improved lattice actions, and that the physical energy levels are accurately reproduced by the weighted average of a given spin multiplets.

The Hoyle state in Nuclear Lattice EFT

We review the calculation of the Hoyle state of $^{12}$C in Nuclear Lattice Effective Field Theory (NLEFT) and its anthropic implications for the nucleosynthesis of $^{12}$C and $^{16}$O in red giant stars. We also review the extension of NLEFT to the regime of medium-mass nuclei, with emphasis on the determination of the ground-state energies of the alpha nuclei $^{16}$O, $^{20}$Ne, $^{24}$Mg and $^{28}$Si by means of Euclidean time projection. Finally, we review recent NLEFT results for the spectrum, electromagnetic properties, and alpha-cluster structure of $^{16}$O.

Lattice Effective Field Theory for Medium-Mass Nuclei

We extend Nuclear Lattice Effective Field Theory (NLEFT) to medium-mass nuclei, and present results for the ground states of alpha nuclei from $^4$He to $^{28}$Si, calculated up to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in the EFT expansion. This computational advance is made possible by extrapolations of lattice data using multiple initial and final states. For our soft two-nucleon interaction, we find that the overall contribution from multi-nucleon forces must change sign from attractive to repulsive with increasing nucleon number. This effect is not produced by three-nucleon forces at NNLO, but it can be approximated by an effective four-nucleon interaction. We discuss the convergence of the EFT expansion and the broad significance of our findings for future ab initio calculations.

The reaction pi N -> pi pi N in chiral effective field theory with explicit Delta(1232) degrees of freedom

The reaction pi N -> pi pi N is studied at tree level up to next-to-leading order in the framework of manifestly covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory with explicit Delta(1232) degrees of freedom. Using total cross section data to determine the relevant low-energy constants, predictions are made for various differential as well as total cross sections at higher energies. A detailed comparison of results based on the heavy-baryon and relativistic formulations of chiral perturbation theory with and without explicit Delta degrees of freedom is given.

Ab initio calculation of the spectrum and structure of $^{16}$O

We present ab initio lattice calculations of the low-energy even-parity states of $^{16}$O using chiral nuclear effective field theory. We find good agreement with the empirical energy spectrum, and with the electromagnetic properties and transition rates. For the ground state, we find that the nucleons are arranged in a tetrahedral configuration of alpha clusters. For the first excited spin-0 state, we find that the predominant structure is a square configuration of alpha clusters, with rotational excitations that include the first spin-2 state.

Generalized Heavy-to-Light Form Factors in Light-Cone Sum Rules

We study the form factors for a heavy meson into the S-wave $Kπ/ππ$ system with an invariant mass below 1~GeV. The mesonic final state interactions are described in terms of the scalar form factors, which are obtained from unitarized chiral perturbation theory. Employing generalized light-cone distribution amplitudes, we compute the heavy-to-light transition using light-cone sum rules. Our approach simultaneously respects constraints from analyticity and unitarity, and also takes advantage of the power expansion in the $1/m_b$ and the strong coupling constant.

Nuclear forces and ab initio calculations of atomic nuclei

Nuclear forces and the nuclear many-body problem have been some of Gerry Brown's main topics in his so productive life as a theoretical physicist. In this talk, I outline how Gerry's work laid the foundations of the modern theory of nuclear forces and ab initio calculations of atomic nuclei. I also present some recent developments obtained in the framework of nuclear lattice simulations.
