Y(4260): hadronic molecule versus hadro-charmonium interpretation

In this paper we confront both the hadronic molecule and the hadro-charmonium interpretations of the $\y$ with the experimental data currently available. We conclude that the data support the $\y$ being dominantly a $D_1\bar D+c.c.$ hadronic molecule while they challenge the hadro-charmonium interpretation. However, additional data is necessary to allow for stronger conclusions.

Parity violation in proton-proton scattering from chiral effective field theory

We present a calculation of the parity-violating longitudinal asymmetry in proton-proton scattering. The calculation is performed in the framework of chiral effective field theory which is applied systematically to both the parity-conserving and parity-violating interactions. The asymmetry is calculated up to next-to-leading order in the parity-odd nucleon-nucleon potential. At this order the asymmetry depends on two parity-violating low-energy constants: the weak pion-nucleon coupling constant $h_π$ and one four-nucleon contact coupling. By comparison with the existing data, we obtain a rather large range for $h_π= (1.1\pm 2)\cdot 10^{-6}$. This range is consistent with theoretical estimations and experimental limits, but more data are needed to pin down a better constrained value. We conclude that an additional measurement of the asymmetry around 125 MeV lab energy would be beneficial to achieve this goal.

Partially twisted boundary conditions for scalar mesons

The possibility of imposing partially twisted boundary conditions in the lattice study of the resonance states is investigated by using the effective field theory (EFT) methods. In particular, it is demonstrated that - in certain cases - it is possible to use partial twisting even in the presence of the quark annihilation diagrams.

Lattice effective field theory for nuclei from A = 4 to A = 28

We present an overview of the extension of Nuclear Lattice Effective Field Theory simulations to the regime of medium-mass nuclei. We focus on the determination of the ground-state energies of the alpha nuclei $^{16}$O, $^{20}$Ne, $^{24}$Mg and $^{28}$Si by means of Euclidean time projection.

Antinucleon-nucleon interaction in chiral effective field theory

Results of an exploratory study of the antinucleon-nucleon interaction within chiral effective field theory are reported. The antinucleon-nucleon potential is derived up to next-to-next-to-leading order, based on a modified Weinberg power counting, in close analogy to pertinent studies of the nucleon-nucleon interaction. The low-energy constants associated with the arising contact interactions are fixed by a fit to phase shifts and inelasticities provided by a recently published phase-shift analysis of antiproton-proton scattering data. The overall quality of the achieved description of the antinucleon-nucleon amplitudes is comparable to the one found in case of the nucleon-nucleon interaction at the same order. For most S-waves and several P-waves good agreement with the antinucleon-nucleon phase shifts and inelasticities is obtained up to laboratory energies of around 200 MeV.

Partial twisting for scalar mesons

The possibility of imposing partially twisted boundary conditions is investigated for the scalar sector of lattice QCD. According to the commonly shared belief, the presence of quark-antiquark annihilation diagrams in the intermediate state generally hinders the use of the partial twisting. Using effective field theory techniques in a finite volume, and studying the scalar sector of QCD with total isospin I=1, we however demonstrate that partial twisting can still be performed, despite the fact that annihilation diagrams are present. The reason for this are delicate cancellations, which emerge due to the graded symmetry in partially quenched QCD with valence, sea and ghost quarks. The modified Luescher equation in case of partial twisting is given.

Dependence of the triple-alpha process on the fundamental constants of nature

We present an ab initio calculation of the quark mass dependence of the ground state energies of ^4He, ^8Be and ^{12}C, and of the energy of the Hoyle state in ^{12}C. These investigations are performed within the framework of lattice chiral Effective Field Theory. We address the sensitivity of the production rate of carbon and oxygen in red giant stars to the fundamental constants of nature by considering the impact of variations in the light quark masses and the electromagnetic fine-structure constant on the reaction rate of the triple-alpha process. As carbon and oxygen are essential to life as we know it, we also discuss the implications of our findings for an anthropic view of the Universe. We find strong evidence that the physics of the triple-alpha process is driven by alpha clustering, and that shifts in the fundamental parameters at the \simeq 2 - 3 % level are unlikely to be detrimental to the development of life. Tolerance against much larger changes cannot be ruled out at present, given the relatively limited knowledge of the quark mass dependence of the two-nucleon S-wave scattering parameters. Lattice QCD is expected to provide refined estimates of the scattering parameters in the future.

Finite volume effects in low-energy neutron-deuteron scattering

We present a lattice calculation of neutron-deuteron scattering at very low energies and investigate in detail the impact of the topological finite-volume corrections. Our calculations are carried out in the framework of pionless effective field theory at leading order in the low-energy expansion. Using lattice sizes and a lattice spacing comparable to those employed in nuclear lattice simulations, we find that the topological volume corrections must be taken into account in order to obtain correct results for the neutron-proton S-wave scattering lengths.

Tetraquarks, hadronic molecules, meson-meson scattering and disconnected contributions in lattice QCD

There are generally two types of Wick contractions in lattice QCD calculations of a correlation function --- connected and disconnected ones. The disconnected contribution is difficult to calculate and noisy, thus it is often neglected. In the context of studying tetraquarks, hadronic molecules and meson-meson scattering, we show that whenever there are both connected and singly disconnected contractions, the singly disconnected part gives the leading order contribution, and thus should never be neglected. As an explicit example, we show that information about the scalar mesons sigma, f0(980), a0(980) and kappa will be lost when neglecting the disconnected contributions.

Production of charged heavy quarkonium-like states at the LHC and the Tevatron

We study prompt hadroproduction of the charged bottomonium-like states $Z_b^\pm (10610)$ and $Z_b^\pm (10650)$, and the charged charmonium-like states $Z_c^\pm (3900)$ and $Z_c^\pm (4020)$, at the Tevatron and the LHC, provided that these states are $S$-wave hadronic molecules. Using two Monte Carlo event generators, Herwig and Pythia, to simulate the production of heavy meson pairs, we derive an order-of-magnitude estimate of the production rates for these four particles. Our estimates yield a cross section at the nb level for the $Z_b(10610)$ and $Z_b(10650)$. The results for the $Z_c(3900)$ and $Z_c(4020)$ are larger by a factor of 20-30. These cross sections are large enough to be observed, and measurements at hadron colliders in the future will supplement the study using electron-positron collisions, and therefore allow to explore the mysterious nature of these exotic states.

A walk through the world of chiral dynamics

Hadron-hadron scattering lengths are fine probes of our understanding of nonperturbative QCD. I discuss the status of a variety of scattering processes sensitive to the spontaneous and explicit chiral symmetry breaking of QCD, such as pion-pion, pion-kaon, pion-nucleon, antikaon-nucleon and Goldstone boson scattering off D-mesons. The fruitful interplay of theory, experiment and lattice QCD is emphasized. I point out what has to be done in these fields to gain further insight into these fundamental parameters.

Chiral Dynamics and S-wave Contributions in Semileptonic B decays

The flavor-changing neutral current process $b\to s l^+l^-$ is beneficial to testing the standard model and hunting for new physics scenarios. In exclusive decay modes like $B\to K^*(892)l^+l^-$, the S-wave effects may not be negligible and thus have to be reliably estimated. Using the scalar form factors derived from dispersion relations in two channels and matched to Chiral Perturbation Theory, we investigate the S-wave contributions in $\bar B^0\to K^- π^+ l^+l^-$, with the $Kπ$ invariant mass lying in the vicinity of the mass of $K^*(892)$, and the $B_s\to K^- K^+ l^+l^-$ with $m_{KK}\sim m_ϕ$. We find that the S-wave will modify differential decay widths by about 10% in the process of $\bar B^0\to K^- π^+ l^+l^-$ and about 5% in $B_s\to K^- K^+ l^+l^-$. A forward-backward asymmetry for the charged kaon in the final state arises from the interference between the S-wave and P-wave contributions. The measurement of this asymmetry offers a new way to determine the variation of the $Kπ$ S-wave phase versus the invariant mass.

Production of the X(3872) in charmonia radiative decays

We discuss the possibilities of producing the X(3872), which is assumed to be a D \bar D^* bound state, in radiative decays of charmonia. We argue that the ideal energy regions to observe the X(3872) associated with a photon in e^+e^- annihilations are around the Y(4260) mass and around 4.45 GeV, due to the presence of the S-wave D \bar D_1(2420) and D^* \bar D_1(2420) threshold, respectively. Especially, if the Y(4260) is dominantly a D \bar D_1 molecule and the X(3872) a D \bar D^* molecule, the radiative transition strength will be quite large.

Viability of carbon-based life as a function of the light quark mass

The Hoyle state plays a crucial role in the helium burning of stars that have reached the red giant stage. The close proximity of this state to the triple-alpha threshold is needed for the production of carbon, oxygen, and other elements necessary for life. We investigate whether this life-essential condition is robust or delicately fine-tuned by measuring its dependence on the fundamental constants of nature, specifically the light quark mass and the strength of the electromagnetic interaction. We show that there exist strong correlations between the alpha-particle binding energy and the various energies relevant to the triple-alpha process. We derive limits on the variation of these fundamental parameters from the requirement that sufficient amounts of carbon and oxygen be generated in stars. We also discuss the implications of these results for an anthropic view of the universe.

Confirming the molecular nature of the $Z_b(10610)$ and the $Z_b(10650)$

The decays of the $Z_b(10610)$ and the $Z_b(10650)$ to $Υ(nS)π$, $h_b(mP)π$ and $χ_{bJ}(mP)γ$ ($n=1,2,3$, $m=1,2$ and $J=0,1,2$) are investigated within a nonrelativistic effective field theory. It is argued that, while the decays to $Υ(nS) π$ suffer from potentially large higher order corrections, the $P$-wave transitions of the $Z_b$ states offer the best possibility to confirm the nature of the $Z_b$ states as molecular states and to further study their properties. We give nontrivial and parameter-free predictions for the ratios of various partial widths for final states with $h_b(mP)π$ and $χ_{bJ}(mP)γ$. In addition, the branching fractions for the neutral $Z_b$-states to $χ_{bJ}γ$ are predicted to be of order $10^{-4}$--$10^{-3}$. This provides a fine test of the molecular nature in future high-luminosity experiments.

Finite volume effects and quark mass dependence of the N(1535) and N(1650)

For resonances decaying in a finite volume, the simple identification of state and eigenvalue is lost. The extraction of the scattering amplitude is a major challenge as we demonstrate by extrapolating the physical S_{11} amplitude of pion-nucleon scattering to the finite volume and unphysical quark masses, using a unitarized chiral framework including all next-to-leading order contact terms. We show that the pole movement of the resonances N(1535)1/2^- and N(1650)1/2^- with varying quark masses is non-trivial. In addition, there are several strongly coupled S-wave thresholds that induce a similar avoided level crossing as narrow resonances. The level spectrum is predicted for two typical lattice setups, and ways to extract the amplitude from upcoming lattice data are discussed.

Threshold neutral pion photoproduction off the tri-nucleon to O(q^4)

We calculate electromagnetic neutral pion production off tri-nucleon bound states (3H, 3He) at threshold in chiral nuclear effective field theory to fourth order in the standard heavy baryon counting. We show that the fourth order two-nucleon corrections to the S-wave multipoles at threshold are very small. This implies that a precise measurement of the S-wave cross section for neutral pion production off 3He allows for a stringent test of the chiral perturbation theory prediction for the S-wave electric multipole E_{0+}^{pi0 n}.
