Doped Kondo chain, a heavy Luttinger liquid

The one dimensional $SU(2)$ Kondo Lattice model is studied by Density Matrix Renormalization Group away from half-filling. We find signatures of a Heavy Tomonaga-Luttinger Liquid (HTLL) phase, which describes one dimensional Heavy Fermions. We compute the wave-vector dependent charge and spin susceptibilities. Our results establish divergent charge and spin correlations at the large Fermi surface $k_F+π/2$, and its harmonics. We also find a signature of the hybridization gap at the small Fermi surface. We compare our $N\!=\!2$ results to the large-$N$ Slave Bosons mean field theory of the $SU(N)$ Kondo Lattice model, and find crucial effects of the RKKY interactions on the generation of renormalized effective mass for the $N\!=\!2$ model.

Stable-unstable transition for a Bose-Hubbard chain coupled to an environment

Interactions in quantum systems may induce transitions to exotic correlated phases of matter which can be vulnerable to coupling to an environment. Here, we study the stability of a Bose-Hubbard chain coupled to a bosonic bath at zero and non-zero temperature. We show that only above a critical interaction the chain loses bosons and its properties are significantly affected. The transition is of a different nature than the superfluid-Mott insulator transition and occurs at a different critical interaction. We explain such a stable-unstable transition by the opening of a charge gap. The comparison of accurate matrix product state simulations to approximative approaches that miss this transition reveals its many-body origin.

Universal long-time behavior of stochastically driven interacting quantum systems

One of the most important concepts in non-equilibrium physics is relaxation. In the vicinity of a classical critical point, the relaxation time can diverge and result in a universal power-law for the relaxation dynamics; the emerging classification of the dynamic universality class has been elucidated by Hohenberg and Halperin. In this paper, we systematically study the long-time relaxation dynamics in stochastically driven interacting quantum systems. We find that even though the stochastic forces will inevitably drive the systems into a featureless infinite temperature state, the way to approach the steady state can be highly nontrivial and exhibit rich universal dynamical behavior determined by the interplay between the stochastic driving and quantum many-body effects. We investigate the dynamical universality class by including different types of perturbations. The heating dynamics of a Hamiltonian with locally unbounded Hilbert space is also studied.

Prethermalization and Persistent Order in the Absence of a Thermal Phase Transition

We numerically study the dynamics after a parameter quench in the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model with long-range interactions ($\propto 1/r^α$ with distance $r$), for finite chains and also directly in the thermodynamic limit. In nonequilibrium, i.e., before the system settles into a thermal state, we find a long-lived regime that is characterized by a prethermal value of the magnetization, which in general differs from its thermal value. We find that the ferromagnetic phase is stabilized dynamically: as a function of the quench parameter, the prethermal magnetization shows a transition between a symmetry-broken and a symmetric phase, even for those values of $α$ for which no finite-temperature transition occurs in equilibrium. The dynamical critical point is shifted with respect to the equilibrium one, and the shift is found to depend on $α$ as well as on the quench parameters.

How to discretize a quantum bath for real-time evolution

Many numerical techniques for the description of quantum systems that are coupled to a continuous bath require the discretization of the latter. To this end, a wealth of methods has been developed in the literature, which we classify as (i) direct discretization, (ii) orthogonal polynomial, and (iii) numerical optimization strategies. We recapitulate strategies (i) and (ii) to clarify their relation. For quadratic Hamiltonians, we show that (ii) is the best strategy in the sense that it gives the numerically exact time evolution up to a maximum time $t_\text{max}$, for which we give a simple expression. For non-quadratic Hamiltonians, we show that no such best strategy exists. We present numerical examples relevant to open quantum systems and strongly correlated systems, as treated by dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT).

Imaginary-time matrix product state impurity solver for dynamical mean-field theory

We present a new impurity solver for dynamical mean-field theory based on imaginary-time evolution of matrix product states. This converges the self-consistency loop on the imaginary-frequency axis and obtains real-frequency information in a final real-time evolution. Relative to computations on the real-frequency axis, required bath sizes are much smaller and less entanglement is generated, so much larger systems can be studied. The power of the method is demonstrated by solutions of a three band model in the single and two-site dynamical mean-field approximation. Technical issues are discussed, including details of the method, efficiency as compared to other matrix product state based impurity solvers, bath construction and its relation to real-frequency computations and the analytic continuation problem of quantum Monte Carlo, the choice of basis in dynamical cluster approximation, and perspectives for off-diagonal hybridization functions.

Lattice assisted spectroscopy: a generalized scanning tunnelling microscope for ultra-cold atoms

We show that the possibility to address and image single sites of an optical lattice, now an experimental reality, allows to measure the frequency-resolved local particle and hole spectra of a wide variety of one- and two-dimensional systems of lattice-confined strongly correlated ultracold atoms. Combining perturbation theory and time-dependent DMRG, we validate this scheme of lattice-assisted spectroscopy (LAS) on several example systems, such as the 1D superfluid and Mott insulator, with and without a parabolic trap, and finally on edge states of the bosonic Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. We also highlight extensions of our basic scheme to obtain an even wider variety of interesting and important frequency resolved spectra.

Spectral functions and time evolution from the Chebyshev recursion

We link linear prediction of Chebyshev and Fourier expansions to analytic continuation. We push the resolution in the Chebyshev-based computation of $T=0$ many-body spectral functions to a much higher precision by deriving a modified Chebyshev series expansion that allows to reduce the expansion order by a factor $\sim\frac{1}{6}$. We show that in a certain limit the Chebyshev technique becomes equivalent to computing spectral functions via time evolution and subsequent Fourier transform. This introduces a novel recursive time evolution algorithm that instead of the group operator $e^{-iHt}$ only involves the action of the generator $H$. For quantum impurity problems, we introduce an adapted discretization scheme for the bath spectral function. We discuss the relevance of these results for matrix product state (MPS) based DMRG-type algorithms, and their use within dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). We present strong evidence that the Chebyshev recursion extracts less spectral information from $H$ than time evolution algorithms when fixing a given amount of created entanglement.

A Strictly Single-Site DMRG Algorithm with Subspace Expansion

We introduce a strictly single-site DMRG algorithm based on the subspace expansion of the Alternating Minimal Energy (AMEn) method. The proposed new MPS basis enrichment method is sufficient to avoid local minima during the optimisation, similarly to the density matrix perturbation method, but computationally cheaper. Each application of $\hat H$ to $|Ψ\rangle$ in the central eigensolver is reduced in cost for a speed-up of $\approx (d + 1)/2$, with $d$ the physical site dimension. Further speed-ups result from cheaper auxiliary calculations and an often greatly improved convergence behaviour. Runtime to convergence improves by up to a factor of 2.5 on the Fermi-Hubbard model compared to the previous single-site method and by up to a factor of 3.9 compared to two-site DMRG. The method is compatible with real-space parallelisation and non-abelian symmetries.

Phase diagram of the J1-J2 Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice

We perform an extensive density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) study of the ground-state phase diagram of the spin-1/2 J_1-J_2 Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice. We focus on the region of the phase diagram around the kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet, i.e., at J_2=0. We investigate the static spin structure factor, the magnetic correlation lengths, and the spin gaps. Our results are consistent with the absence of magnetic order in a narrow region around J_2\approx 0, although strong finite-size effects do not allow us to accurately determine the phase boundaries. This result is in agreement with the presence of an extended spin-liquid region, as it has been proposed recently. Outside the disordered region, we find that for ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic J_2 the ground state displays signatures of the magnetic order of the \sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3} and the q=0 type, respectively. Finally, we focus on the structure of the entanglement spectrum (ES) in the q=0 ordered phase. We discuss the importance of the choice of the bipartition on the finite-size structure of the ES.

Solving nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory using matrix product states

We solve the nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) using matrix product states (MPS). This allows us to treat much larger bath sizes and by that reach substantially longer times (factor $\sim$ 2 -- 3) than with exact diagonalization. We show that the star geometry of the underlying impurity problem can have substantially better entanglement properties than the previously favoured chain geometry. This has immense consequences for the efficiency of an MPS-based description of general impurity problems: in the case of equilibrium DMFT, it leads to an orders-of-magnitude speedup. We introduce an approximation for the two-time hybridization function that uses time-translational invariance, which can be observed after a certain relaxation time after a quench to a time-independent Hamiltonian.

Domain-wall melting in ultracold boson systems with holes and spin-flip defects

Quantum magnetism is a fundamental phenomenon of nature. As of late, it has garnered a lot of interest because experiments with ultracold atomic gases in optical lattices could be used as a simulator for phenomena of magnetic systems. A paradigmatic example is the time evolution of a domain-wall state of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain, the so-called domain-wall melting. The model can be implemented by having two species of bosonic atoms with unity filling and strong on-site repulsion U in an optical lattice. In this paper, we study the domain-wall melting in such a setup on the basis of the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group (tDMRG). We are particularly interested in the effects of defects that originate from an imperfect preparation of the initial state. Typical defects are holes (empty sites) and flipped spins. We show that the dominating effects of holes on observables like the spatially resolved magnetization can be taken account of by a linear combination of spatially shifted observables from the clean case. For sufficiently large U, further effects due to holes become negligible. In contrast, the effects of spin flips are more severe as their dynamics occur on the same time scale as that of the domain-wall melting itself. It is hence advisable to avoid preparation schemes that are based on spin-flips.

Bound states and entanglement in the excited states of quantum spin chains

We investigate entanglement properties of the excited states of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg (XXX) chain with isotropic antiferromagnetic interactions, by exploiting the Bethe ansatz solution of the model. We consider eigenstates obtained from both real and complex solutions ("strings") of the Bethe equations. Physically, the former are states of interacting magnons, whereas the latter contain bound states of groups of particles. We first focus on the situation with few particles in the chain. Using exact results and semiclassical arguments, we derive an upper bound S_MAX for the entanglement entropy. This exhibits an intermediate behavior between logarithmic and extensive, and it is saturated for highly-entangled states. As a function of the eigenstate energy, the entanglement entropy is organized in bands. Their number depends on the number of blocks of contiguous Bethe-Takahashi quantum numbers. In presence of bound states a significant reduction in the entanglement entropy occurs, reflecting that a group of bound particles behaves effectively as a single particle. Interestingly, the associated entanglement spectrum shows edge-related levels. At finite particle density, the semiclassical bound S_MAX becomes inaccurate. For highly-entangled states S_A\propto L_c, with L_c the chord length, signaling the crossover to extensive entanglement. Finally, we consider eigenstates containing a single pair of bound particles. No significant entanglement reduction occurs, in contrast with the few-particle case.

Competing regimes of motion in 1D mobile impurities

We show that a distinguishable mobile impurity inside a one-dimensional many-body state at zero temperature generally does not behave like a quasiparticle (QP). Instead, both the impurities dynamics as well as the ground state of the bath are fundamentally transformed by a diverging number of zero-energy excitations being generated, leading to what we call infrared-dominated (ID) dynamics. Combining analytics and DMRG numerics we provide a general formula for the power law governing ID dynamics at zero momentum, discuss a threshold beyond which quasiparticle dynamics may occur again, and study the competition between the ID and quasiparticle universality classes at larger impurity momenta.

Quantum magnetism of bosons with synthetic gauge fields in one-dimensional optical lattices: a Density Matrix Renormalization Group study

In this paper, we provide a comprehensive study of the quantum magnetism in the Mott insulating phases of the 1D Bose-Hubbard model with abelian or non-abelian synthetic gauge fields, using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) method. We focus on the interplay between the synthetic gauge field and the asymmetry of the interactions, which give rise to a very general effective magnetic model: a XYZ model with various Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions. The properties of the different quantum magnetic phases and phases transitions of this model are investigated.

Chebyshev Matrix Product State Impurity Solver for the Dynamical Mean-Field Theory

We compute the spectral functions for the two-site dynamical cluster theory and for the two-orbital dynamical mean-field theory in the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) framework using Chebyshev expansions represented with matrix product states (MPS). We obtain quantitatively precise results at modest computational effort through technical improvements regarding the truncation scheme and the Chebyshev rescaling procedure. We furthermore establish the relation of the Chebyshev iteration to real-time evolution, and discuss technical aspects as computation time and implementation in detail.

Scaling of the thermal spectral function for quantum critical bosons in one dimension

We present an improved scheme for the precise evaluation of finite-temperature response functions of strongly correlated systems in the framework of the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group. The maximum times that we can reach at finite temperatures T are typically increased by a factor of two, when compared against the earlier approaches. This novel scheme, complemented with linear prediction, allows us now to evaluate dynamic correlators for interacting bosons in one dimension. We demonstrate that the considered spectral function in the quantum critical regime with dynamic critical exponent z=2 is captured by the universal scaling form S(k,omega)=(1/T)*Phi(k/sqrt(T),omega/T) and calculate the scaling function precisely.

Fractional Excitations in Cold Atomic Gases

We study the behavior of excitations in the tilted one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model. In the phase with broken symmetry, fundamental excitations are domain-walls which show fractional statistics. Using perturbation theory, we derive an analytic model for the time evolution of these fractional excitations, and demonstrate the existence of a repulsively bound state above a critical center of mass momentum. The validity of the perturbative analysis is confirmed by the use of t- DMRG simulations. These findings open the path for experimental detection of fractional particles in cold atomic gases.
