Spin-incoherent Mott-Thouless pumps

A Thouless pump describes a system in which a quantized amount of charge is transported by one lattice spacing per cycle when the parameters of a Hamiltonian are varied slowly and periodically. In the standard case, this quantization requires the system to remain in its ground state with vanishing thermodynamic entropy throughout the pumping process. Here, we introduce a class of Mott-Thouless pumps, which operate in highly entropic, spin-incoherent Mott states. We show analytically that these states exhibit exponentially protected quantized transport despite their extensive entropy, because the pumped charge resides in a gapped sector that remains dynamically decoupled from the hot spin degrees of freedom. By contrast, motivated by a recent experimental realization, we identify other classes of Mott-Thouless pumps that lack this protection. In these systems, spin excitations can efficiently generate charge excitations, leading to a rapid breakdown of quantized transport. Our analytical results are supported by numerically exact real-time simulations of finite systems.

Chirality and quasi-long-range order in finite-flux Gutzwiller states for magnetized frustrated magnets

We study Gutzwiller-projected wavefunctions for triangular-lattice U(1) Dirac spin liquids in a Zeeman field, where we allow the U(1) gauge field to develop a gauge flux, resulting in (spin-split) spinon Landau levels. We find that at a given magnetization, the optimal candidate state has a finite flux chosen such that the spinon filling lies in a $|C|=1$ Landau-level gap: it gives the lowest variational energy and the smallest energy variance within our correlation-matrix reconstruction for local Heisenberg-type models. By symmetry, we argue that the finite gauge flux results in a non-zero (staggered) scalar spin chirality, as also numerically observed, and further find that the $|C|=1$ state exhibits dominant quasi-long-ranged $120^\circ$ magnetic correlations. Studying the next-to-optimal wavefunction with a $|C|=2$ Landau-level gap, we observe unusual spin-nematic correlations. Our results may provide guidance for analyzing the magnetic-field response of DSL candidate materials and offer numerical diagnostics that can connect to the underlying theory of spinons coupled to an emergent U(1) gauge field.

Kinetically induced order from mobility-constrained excitations

A fascinating feature of strongly correlated systems is that excitations may carry nontrivial quantum numbers under emergent symmetries which, in some cases, may strongly constrain their motion. We show that such constrained excitations can play a central role in driving symmetry-breaking long-range order through a kinetic mechanism: coupling to a local order-parameter field activates the mobility of otherwise constrained excitations, and condensation of the order parameter then enables a large gain in kinetic energy, thereby stabilizing a phase with long-range order. We illustrate this mechanism in two settings: (i) a dimerization instability in a spin chain with a magnetization dipole conservation law, and (ii) itinerant magnetism of electrons in the Kitaev-Kondo model, where charge carriers couple to local moments that form a spin liquid. This mechanism becomes operative whenever a finite density of mobility-constrained excitations is present, either through non-equilibrium preparation or thermal activation. In the latter case, we argue that increasing temperature can, counterintuitively, promote order by enhancing the kinetic-energy gain of thermally activated excitations.

Anisotropic vacancy-induced magnetization textures in altermagnets

We study magnetic textures induced by vacancies in altermagnets using microscopic simulations and low-energy field theory. We show that a vacancy generically produces a real-space anisotropic distortion of the magnetic order, whose structure encodes the symmetry of the underlying altermagnetic state. This impurity response offers a direct route to detecting altermagnetic order with locally resolved probes. We demonstrate this for both classical altermagnets, where vacancies generate anisotropic magnetization textures in a transverse magnetic field, and quantum models, where fluctuations induce longitudinal power-law decaying magnetic distortions even at zero field.

Emergent gauge flux in mixed QED$_3$ with flavor chemical potential: application to magnetized U(1) Dirac spin liquids

We design a lattice model of a "mixed" U(1) gauge field coupled to fermions with a flavor chemical potential and solve it with large-scale determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulations, For zero flavor chemical potential, the model realizes three-dimensional quantum electrodynamics (QED$_3$) which has been argued to describe the ground state and low-energy excitations of the Dirac spin liquid phase of quantum antiferromagnets. At finite flavor chemical potential, corresponding to a Zeeman field perturbing the Dirac spin liquid, we find a "chiral flux" phase which is characterized by the generation of a finite mean emergent gauge flux and, accordingly, the formation of relativistic Landau levels for the Dirac fermions. In this state, the U(1)$_m$ magnetic symmetry is spontaneously broken, leading to a gapless free photon mode which, due to spin-flux-attachment, is observable in the longitudinal spin structure factor. We numerically compute longitudinal and transverse spin structure factors which match our continuum and lattice mean-field theory predictions. In a different region of the phase diagram, strong fluctuations of the emergent gauge field give rise to an antiferromagnetically ordered state with gapped Dirac fermions coexisting with a deconfined gauge field. We also find an interesting intermediate phase where the chiral flux phase and the antiferromagnetic phase coexist. We argue that our results pave the way to testable predictions for magnetized Dirac spin liquids in frustrated quantum antiferromagnets.

Exchange-frustrated quadrupoles on the honeycomb lattice: Flavor-wave spectra, classical degeneracies and parton constructions

We study the quadrupolar Kitaev model, an $S=1$ honeycomb-lattice model with frustrated bond-dependent quadrupolar interactions. Using complementary methods and expanding around controlled limits, we uncover several intertwined structures. First, a semiclassical variational analysis based on $\mathrm{SU}(3)$ flavor theory reveals an extensively degenerate manifold of classical mean-field ground states, suggesting that quantum fluctuations may stabilize a quantum-disordered phase. Second, in the bond-anisotropic limit, perturbation theory is used to derive effective low-energy Hamiltonians, which crucially depend on the presence (or absence) of a residual symmetry $\mathcal{M}$ of combined lattice reflection and discrete spin rotation. A Majorana parton construction uncovers an exact $\mathbb Z_2$ gauge structure and motivates possible confined and deconfined phases driven by gauge-charge condensation, consistent with the effective theories obtained in anisotropic limit. Further, within the same parton formalism, different Majorana mean-field ansätze produce both gapless and gapped candidate quantum-disordered states, distinguished by linear versus projective implementations of $\mathcal M$. Our results highlight frustrated quadrupolar interactions as a route to quantum-disordered phases, relevant to $S \geq 1$ Kitaev materials and Rydberg-array quantum simulators.

Projectively implemented altermagnetism in an exactly solvable quantum spin liquid

Altermagnets are a new class of symmetry-compensated magnets with large spin splittings. Here, we show that the notion of altermagnetism extends beyond the realm of Landau-type order: we study exactly solvable $\mathbb{Z}_2$ quantum spin(-orbital) liquids (QSL), which simultaneously support magnetic long-range order as well as fractionalization and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological order. Our symmetry analysis reveals that in this model three distinct types of ``fractionalized altermagnets (AM$^*$)'' may emerge, which can be distinguished by their residual symmetries. Importantly, the fractionalized excitations of these states carry an emergent $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge charge, which implies that they transform \emph{projectively} under symmetry operations. Consequently, we show that ``altermagnetic spin splittings'' are now encoded in a momentum-dependent particle-hole asymmetry of the fermionic parton bands. We discuss consequences for experimental observables such as dynamical spin structure factors and (nonlinear) thermal and spin transport.

Emergent magnetism and spin liquids in an extended Hubbard description of moiré bilayers

Motivated by twisted transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), we study an extended Hubbard model with both on-site and off-site repulsive interactions, in which Mott insulating states with concomitant charge order occur at fractional fillings. To resolve the charge ordering as well as the fate of the local moments formed thereby, we perform large-scale density matrix renormalization group calculations on cylindrical geometries for several filling fractions and ranges of interaction strength. Depending on the precise parameter regime, both antiferromagnetically ordered as well as quantum-disordered states are found, with a particularly prominent example being a quantum spin liquid-type ground state on top of charge-ordering with effective Kagomé geometry. We discuss the different mechanisms at play in stabilizing various electronic and magnetic states. The results suggest that moiré TMDs are a promising venue for emergent quantum magnetism of strongly interacting electrons.

Fractionalized Superconductivity Mediated by Majorana Fermions in the Kitaev-Kondo Lattice

Superconductivity usually emerges from a metallic normal state which follows the Fermi-liquid paradigm. If, in contrast, the normal state is a fractionalized non-Fermi liquid, then pairing may either eliminate fractionalization via a Higgs-type mechanism leading to a conventional superconducting state, or pairing can occur in the presence of fractionalization. Here we discuss a simple model for the latter case: Using a combination of perturbation theory and functional renormalization group, we show that the Kitaev--Kondo lattice model displays a fractionalized superconducting phase at weak Kondo coupling. This phase is characterized by Cooper pairing of conventional electronic quasiparticles, coexisting with a spin-liquid background and topological order. Depending on the sign of the Kitaev coupling, we find the pairing to be either of chiral $d$-wave or $p$-wave type for extended doping regions around the van-Hove filling. We discuss applications and extensions.

Topologically enabled superconductivity: possible implications for rhombohedral graphene

We present a topological mechanism for superconductivity emerging from Chern-2 insulators. While, naively, time-reversal symmetry breaking is expected to prevent superconductivity, it turns out that the opposite is the case: An explicit model calculation for a generalized attractive-U Haldane-Hubbard model demonstrates that superconductivity is only stabilized near the quantum anomalous Hall state, but not near a trivial, time-reversal symmetric band insulator. As standard Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-like mean-field theory fails to capture any superconducting state, we explain this using an effective fractionalized field theory involving fermionic chargeons, bosonic colorons and an emergent U(1) gauge field. When the chargeons form a gapped topological band structure, the proliferation of single monopoles of this gauge field is forbidden. However, long-ranged monopole-antimonopole correlations emerge, and we argue that those correspond to superconducting order. Using random phase approximation on top of extensive slave-rotor mean-field calculations we characterize coherence length and stiffness of the superconductor. Thereby, we deduce the phase diagram in parameter space and furthermore discuss the effect of doping, temperature and an external magnetic field. We complement the fractionalized theory with calculations using an effective spin model and Gutzwiller projected wavefunctions. While mostly based on a simple toy model, we argue that our findings contribute to a better understanding of superconductivity emerging out of spin- and valley polarized rhombohedral graphene multilayers in a parameter regime with nearby quantum anomalous Hall insulators.

Distinct Optical Excitation Mechanisms of a Coherent Magnon in a van der Waals Antiferromagnet

The control of antiferromagnets with ultrashort optical pulses has emerged as a prominent field of research. Tailored laser excitation can launch coherent spin waves at terahertz frequencies, yet a comprehensive description of their generation mechanisms is still lacking despite extensive efforts. Using terahertz emission spectroscopy, we investigate the generation of a coherent magnon mode in the van der Waals antiferromagnet NiPS$_3$ under a range of photoexcitation conditions. By tuning the pump photon energy from transparency to resonant with a $d$-$d$ transition, we reveal a striking change in the coherent magnon's dependence on the pump polarization, indicating two distinct excitation mechanisms. Our findings provide a strategy for the manipulation of magnetic modes via photoexcitation around sub-gap electronic states.

Nonresonant nonlinear magnonics in an antiferromagnet

Antiferromagnets exhibit rapid spin dynamics in a net zero magnetic background which enables novel spintronic applications and interrogation of many-body quantum phenomena. The layered antiferromagnet Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ hosts an exotic spin one-half Mott insulating state with an electronic gap arising from on-site Coulomb repulsion and strong spin-orbit coupling. This makes Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ an interesting candidate to interrogate dynamical attributes of the magnetic order using ultrafast laser pulses. We investigate the magnetization dynamics of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ following circularly-polarized photoexcitation with below-gap mid-infrared (mid-IR -- 9 $μm$) and above-gap near-infrared (near-IR -- 1.3 $μm$) pulses. In both cases, we observe excitation of a zone-center coherent magnon mode featuring a 0.5 THz oscillation in the pump-induced Kerr-rotation signal. However, only below-gap excitation exhibits a helicity dependent response and linear (quadratic) scaling of the coherent magnon amplitude with excitation fluence (electric field). Moreover, below-gap excitation has a magnon generation efficiency that is at least two orders of magnitude greater in comparison to above-gap excitation. Our analysis indicates that the helicity dependence and enhanced generation efficiency arises from a unique one-photon two-magnon coupling mechanism for magnon generation. Thus, preferential spin-photon coupling without photoexcitation of electrons permits extremely efficient magnon generation. Our results reveal new possibilities for ultrafast control of antiferromagnets.

Stability of algebraic spin liquids coupled to quantum phonons

Algebraic spin liquids are quantum disordered phases of insulating magnets which exhibit fractionalized gapless excitations and power-law correlations. Quantum spin liquids in this category include the experimentally established 1D Luttinger liquid, as well as the U(1) Dirac spin liquid (DSL) which has been a focus of recent candidate materials searches. Most notably, several exchange-frustrated Heisenberg materials on the triangular lattice have shown evidence of the U(1) DSL. In this work, we measure the algebraic correlations of spin-singlet excitations in the $J_1$-$J_2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice, prompting a detailed investigation of this model's stability under spin-phonon coupling using variational Monte Carlo. As seen before in 1D spin chains, we observe a low-temperature transition from a U(1) DSL to valence bond order and predict the parameter regime where the model realizes a stable DSL ground state. To achieve this, we employ a series of finite-size scaling Ansätze inspired by the low-energy DSL's conformal description in terms of quantum electrodynamics, and show that emergent monopole operators drive the instability. We compare the physics of this transition to the 1D Luttinger liquid throughout our analysis. We derive the regime of stability against spin-Peierls ordering and argue that the DSL ground state might still be achievable in candidate materials, despite its tendency to valence bond solid ordering.

Spin-Peierls instability of deconfined quantum critical points

Deconfined quantum critical points (DQCPs) are putative phase transitions beyond the Landau paradigm with emergent fractionalized degrees of freedom. The original example of a DQCP is the spin-1/2 quantum antiferromagnet on the square lattice which features a second order transition between valence bond solid (VBS) and Néel order. The VBS order breaks a lattice symmetry, and the corresponding VBS order parameter may couple to lattice distortion modes (phonons) at appropriate momenta. We investigate a field-theoretic description of the DQCP in the presence of such a spin-lattice coupling. We show that treating phonons as classical lattice distortions leads to a relevant monopole-phonon interaction inducing an instability towards a distorted lattice by an analogous mechanism to the spin-Peierls instability in one dimension. Consequently, there is a breakdown of the DQCP which generally becomes a strong first-order transition. Taking into account the full quantum nature of the phonons, we argue that the continuous DQCP persists above a critical phonon frequency. Lastly, we comment on the connection to general gapless, deconfined gauge theories.

Wegner's Ising gauge spins versus Kitaev's Majorana partons: Mapping and application to anisotropic confinement in spin-orbital liquids

Emergent gauge theories take a prominent role in the description of quantum matter, supporting deconfined phases with topological order and fractionalized excitations. A common construction of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theories, first introduced by Wegner, involves Ising gauge spins placed on links and subject to a discrete $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Gauss law constraint. As shown by Kitaev, $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theories also emerge in the exact solution of certain spin systems with bond-dependent interactions. In this context, the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge field is constructed from Majorana fermions, with gauge constraints given by the parity of Majorana fermions on each site. In this work, we provide an explicit Jordan-Wigner transformation that maps between these two formulations on the square lattice, where the Kitaev-type gauge theory emerges as the exact solution of a spin-orbital (Kugel-Khomskii) Hamiltonian. We then apply our mapping to study local perturbations to the spin-orbital Hamiltonian, which correspond to anisotropic interactions between electric-field variables in the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge theory. These are shown to induce anisotropic confinement that is characterized by emergence of weakly-coupled one-dimensional spin chains. We study the nature of these phases and corresponding confinement transitions in both absence and presence of itinerant fermionic matter degrees of freedom. Finally, we discuss how our mapping can be applied to the Kitaev spin-1/2 model on the honeycomb lattice.

Spin-polarons and ferromagnetism in doped dilute Wigner-Mott insulators

Moiré heterostructures of transition metal dichalcogenides exhibit Mott-insulating behaviour both at half-filling as well as at fractional fillings, where electronic degrees of freedom form self-organized Wigner crystal states. An open question concerns magnetic states obtained by lifting the pseudospin-1/2 degeneracy of these states at lowest temperatures. While at half-filling virtual hopping is expected to induce (weak) antiferromagnetic exchange interactions, these are strongly suppressed when considering $\textit{dilute}$ filling fractions. We argue that instead a small concentration of doped electrons leads to the formation of spin-polarons, inducing ferromagnetic order at experimentally relevant temperatures. We predict explicit signatures of polaron-formation in the magnetization profile of the system.

Topological Green's function zeros in an exactly solved model and beyond

The interplay of topological electronic band structures and strong interparticle interactions provides a promising path towards the constructive design of robust, long-range entangled many-body systems. As a prototype for such systems, we here study an exactly integrable, local model for a fractionalized topological insulator. Using a controlled perturbation theory about this limit, we demonstrate the existence of topological bands of zeros in the exact fermionic Green's function and show that {in this model} they do affect the topological invariant of the system, but not the quantized transport response. Close to (but prior to) the Higgs transition signaling the breakdown of fractionalization, the topological bands of zeros acquire a finite ``lifetime''. We also discuss the appearance of edge states and edge zeros at real space domain walls separating different phases of the system. This model provides a fertile ground for controlled studies of the phenomenology of Green's function zeros and the underlying exactly solvable lattice gauge theory illustrates the synergetic cross-pollination between solid-state theory, high-energy physics and quantum information science.

Spin-Peierls instability of the U(1) Dirac spin liquid

A complicating factor in the realization and observation of quantum spin liquids in materials is the ubiquitous presence of other degrees of freedom, in particular lattice distortion modes (phonons). These provide additional routes for relieving magnetic frustration, thereby possibly destabilizing spin-liquid ground states. In this work, we focus on triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnets, where recent numerical evidence suggests the presence of an extended U(1) Dirac spin liquid phase which is described by compact quantum electrodynamics in 2+1 dimensions (QED$_3$), featuring gapless spinons and monopoles as gauge excitations, and believed to flow to a strongly-coupled fixed point with conformal symmetry. Using complementary perturbation theory and scaling arguments, we show that a symmetry-allowed coupling between (classical) finite-wavevector lattice distortions and monopole operators of the U(1) Dirac spin liquid generally induces a spin-Peierls instability towards a (confining) 12-site valence-bond solid state. We support our theoretical analysis with state-of-the-art density matrix renormalization group simulations. Away from the limit of static distortions, we demonstrate that the phonon energy gap establishes a parameter regime where the spin liquid is expected to be stable, and show that the monopole-lattice coupling leads to softening of the phonon in analogy to the Kohn anomaly. We discuss the applicability of our results to similar systems, in particular the Dirac spin liquid on the Kagome lattice.
