Global surfaces of section in the planar restricted 3-body problem

The restricted planar three-body problem has a rich history, yet many unanswered questions still remain. In the present paper we prove the existence of a global surface of section near the smaller body in a new range of energies and mass ratios for which the Hill's region still has three connected components. The approach relies on recent global methods in symplectic geometry and contrasts sharply with the perturbative methods used until now.

A variational approach to Givental's nonlinear Maslov index

In this article we consider a variant of Rabinowitz Floer homology in order to define a homological count of discriminant points for paths of contactomorphisms. The growth rate of this count can be seen as an analogue of Givental's nonlinear Maslov index. As an application we prove a Bott-Samelson type obstruction theorem for positive loops of contactomorphisms.

The contact geometry of the restricted 3-body problem

We show that the planar circular restricted three body problem is of restricted contact type for all energies below the first critical value (action of the first Lagrange point) and for energies slightly above it. This opens up the possibility of using the technology of Contact Topology to understand this particular dynamical system.

Rabinowitz Floer homology: A survey

Rabinowitz Floer homology is the semi-infinite dimensional Morse homology associated to the Rabinowitz action functional used in the pioneering work of Rabinowitz. Gradient flow lines are solutions of a vortex-like equation. In this survey article we describe the construction of Rabinowitz Floer homology and its applications to symplectic and contact topology, global Hamiltonian perturbations and the study of magnetic fields.

On a Theorem by Ekeland-Hofer

In [EH89, Theorem 1] Ekeland-Hofer prove that for a centrally symmetric, restricted contact type hypersurface in R^{2n} and for any global, centrally symmetric Hamiltonian perturbation there exists a leaf-wise intersection point. In this note we show that if we replace restricted contact type by star-shaped there exists infinitely many leaf-wise intersection points or a leaf-wise intersection point on a closed characteristic.

Spectral Invariants in Rabinowitz Floer homology and Global Hamiltonian perturbations

Spectral invariant were introduced in Hamiltonian Floer homology by Viterbo, Oh, and Schwarz. We extend this concept to Rabinowitz Floer homology. As an application we derive new quantitative existence results for leaf-wise intersections. The importance of spectral invariants for the presented application is that spectral invariants allow us to derive existence of critical points of the Rabinowitz action functional even in degenerate situations where the functional is not Morse.

Morse homology on noncompact manifolds

Given a Morse function on a manifold whose moduli spaces of gradient flow lines for each action window are compact up to breaking one gets a bidirect system of chain complexes. There are different possibilities to take limits of such a bidirect system. We discuss in this note the relation between these different limits.

Leaf-wise intersections and Rabinowitz Floer homology

In this article we explain how critical points of a particular perturbation of the Rabinowitz action functional give rise to leaf-wise intersection points in hypersurfaces of restricted contact type. This is used to derive existence and multiplicity results for leaf-wise intersection points in hypersurfaces of restricted contact type in general exact symplectic manifolds. The notion of leaf-wise intersection points was introduced by Moser.

First steps in the geography of scale Hilbert structures

Scale structures were introduced by H.Hofer, K.Wysocki, and E.Zehnder. In this note we define an invariant for scale Hilbert spaces modulo scale isomorphism and use it to distinguish large classes of scale Hilbert spaces.

Rabinowitz Floer homology and symplectic homology

The Rabinowitz-Floer homology groups $RFH_*(M,W)$ are associated to an exact embedding of a contact manifold $(M,ξ)$ into a symplectic manifold $(W,ω)$. They depend only on the bounded component $V$ of $W\setminus M$. We construct a long exact sequence in which symplectic cohomology of $V$ maps to symplectic homology of $V$, which in turn maps to Rabinowitz-Floer homology $RFH_*(M,W)$, which then maps to symplectic cohomology of $V$. We compute $RFH_*(ST^*L,T^*L)$, where $ST^*L$ is the unit cosphere bundle of a closed manifold $L$. As an application, we prove that the image of an exact contact embedding of $ST^*L$ (endowed with the standard contact structure) cannot be displaced away from itself by a Hamiltonian isotopy, provided $\dim L\ge 4$ and the embedding induces an injection on $π_1$. In particular, $ST^*L$ does not admit an exact contact embedding into a subcritical Stein manifold if $L$ is simply connected. We also prove that Weinstein's conjecture holds in symplectic manifolds which admit exact displaceable codimension 0 embeddings.

A Floer homology for exact contact embeddings

In this paper we construct the Floer homology for an action functional which was introduced by Rabinowitz and prove a vanishing theorem. As an application, we show that there are no displaceable exact contact embeddings of the unit cotangent bundle of a sphere of dimension greater than three into a convex exact symplectic manifold with vanishing first Chern class. This generalizes Gromov's result that there are no exact Lagrangian embeddings of a sphere into a complex vector space.

A non-displacable Lagrangian torus in T^*S^2

We show that the Lagrangian torus in the cotangent bundles of the 2-sphere obtained by applying the geodesic flow to the unit circle in a fibre is not displaceable by computing its Lagrangian Floer homology. The computation is based on a symmetry argument.

Fiberwise volume growth via Lagrangian intersections

We consider Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms $ϕ$ of the unit cotangent bundle over a closed Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ which extend to Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of $T^*M$ equal to the time-1-map of the geodesic flow for $|p| \ge 1$. For such diffeomorphisms we establish uniform lower bounds for the fiberwise volume growth of $ϕ$ which were previously known for geodesic flows and which depend only on $(M,g)$ or on the homotopy type of $M$. More precisely, we show that for each $q \in M$ the volume growth of the unit ball in $T_q^*M$ under the iterates of $ϕ$ is at least linear if $M$ is rationally elliptic, is exponential if $M$ is rationally hyperbolic, and is bounded from below by the growth of the fundamental group of $M$. In the case that all geodesics of $g$ are closed, we conclude that the slow volume growth of every symplectomorphism in the symplectic isotopy class of the Dehn--Seidel twist is at least 1, completing the main result of \cite{FS:GAFA}. The proofs use the Lagrangian Floer homology of $T^*M$ and the Abbondandolo--Schwarz isomorphism from this homology to the homology of the based loop space of $M$.
