Symplectic Tate homology

For a Liouville domain $W$ satisfying $c_1(W)=0$, we propose in this note two versions of symplectic Tate homology $\underrightarrow{H}\underleftarrow{T}(W)$ and $\underleftarrow{H}\underrightarrow{T}(W)$ which are related by a canonical map $κ\colon \underrightarrow{H}\underleftarrow{T}(W) \to \underleftarrow{H}\underrightarrow{T}(W)$. Our geometric approach to Tate homology uses the moduli space of finite energy gradient flow lines of the Rabinowitz action functional for a circle in the complex plane as a classifying space for $S^1$-equivariant Tate homology. For rational coefficients the symplectic Tate homology $\underrightarrow{H}\underleftarrow{T}(W)$ has the fixed point property and is therefore isomorphic to $H(W;\mathbb{Q}) \otimes \mathrm{Q}[u,u^{-1}]$, where $\mathbb{Q}[u,u^{-1}]$ is the ring of Laurent polynomials over the rationals. Using a deep theorem of Goodwillie, we construct examples of Liouville domains where the canonical map $κ$ is not surjective and examples where it is not injective.

Continuation homomorphism in Rabinowitz Floer homology for symplectic deformations

Will Merry computed Rabinowitz Floer homology above Mane's critical value in terms of loop space homology by establishing an Abbondandolo-Schwarz short exact sequence. The purpose of this article is to provide an alternative proof of Merry's result. We construct a continuation homomorphism for symplectic deformations which enables us to reduce the computation to the untwisted case. Our construction takes advantage of a special version of the isoperimetric inequality which above Mane's critical value holds true.

Symmetric periodic orbits and uniruled real Liouville domains

A real Liouville domain is a Liouville domain together with an exact anti-symplectic involution. We call a real Liouville domain uniruled if there exists an invariant finite energy plane through every real point. Asymptotically an invariant finite energy plane converges to a symmetric periodic orbit. In this note we work out a criterion which guarantees uniruledness for real Liouville domains.

Healthy vector spaces and spicy Hopf algebras (with applications to the growth rate of geodesic chords and to intermediate volume growth on manifolds of non-finite type)

We give lower bounds for the growth of the number of Reeb chords and for the volume growth of Reeb flows on spherizations over closed manifolds M that are not of finite type, have virtually polycyclic fundamental group, and satisfy a mild assumption on the homology of the based loop space. For the special case of geodesic flows, these lower bounds are: (i) For any Riemannian metric on M, any pair of non-conjugate points p,q in M, and every component C of the space of paths from p to q, the number of geodesics in C of length at most T grows at least like e^{\sqrt T}. (ii) The exponent of the volume growth of any geodesic flow on M is at least 1/2. We obtain these results by combining new algebraic results on the growth of certain filtered Hopf algebras with known results on Floer homology.

Slow volume growth for Reeb flows on spherizations and contact Bott--Samelson theorems

We give a uniform lower bound for the polynomial complexity of all Reeb flows on the spherization (S*M,ξ) over a closed manifold. Our measure for the dynamical complexity of Reeb flows is slow volume growth, a polynomial version of topological entropy, and our uniform bound is in terms of the polynomial growth of the homology of the based loops space of M. As an application, we extend the Bott--Samelson theorem from geodesic flows to Reeb flows: If (S*M,ξ) admits a periodic Reeb flow, or, more generally, if there exists a positive Legendrian loop of a fibre S*_q M, then M is a circle or the fundamental group of M is finite and the integral cohomology ring of the universal cover of M is the one of a compact rank one symmetric space.

Exponential decay for sc-gradient flow lines

In this paper we introduce the notion of sc-action functionals and their sc-gradient flow lines. Our approach is inspired by Floer's unregularized gradient flow. The main result of this paper is that under a Morse condition sc-gradient flow lines have uniform exponential decay towards critical points. The ultimate goal for the future is to construct a M-polyfold bundle over a M-polyfold such that the space of broken sc-gradient flow lines is the zero set of a appropriate sc-section. Here uniform exponential decay is essential. Of independent interest is that we derive exponential decay estimates using interpolation inequalities as opposed to Sobolev inequalities. An advantage is that interpolation inequalities are independent of the dimension of the source space.

Floer homology for non-resonant magnetic fields on flat tori

In this article we define and compute the Novikov Floer homology associated to a non-resonant magnetic field and a mechanical Hamiltonian on a flat torus T^{2N}. As a result, we deduce that this Hamiltonian system always has 2N+1 contractible solutions, and generically even 2^{2N} contractible solutions. Moreover if there exists a non-degenerate non-contractible solution then there necessarily exists another.

The Hormander index of symmetric periodic orbits

A symmetric periodic orbit is a special kind of periodic orbit that can also be regarded as a Lagrangian intersection point. Therefore it has two Maslov indices whose difference is the Hormander index. In this paper we provide a formula for the Hormander index of a symmetric periodic orbit and its iterates in terms of Chebyshev polynomials.

Dihedral homology and the moon

The equivariant homology of a twisted action of the orthogonal group on the free loop space of spheres was computed by Lodder via dihedral homology. In this note we explain how this twisted action appears in the restricted three body problem after Moser regularization.

Floer homology for magnetic fields with at most linear growth on the universal cover

The Floer homology of a cotangent bundle is isomorphic to loop space homology of the underlying manifold, as proved by Abbondandolo-Schwarz, Salamon-Weber, and Viterbo. In this paper we show that in the presence of a Dirac magnetic monopole which admits a primitive with sublinear growth on the universal cover, the Floer homology in atoroidal free homotopy classes is again isomorphic to loop space homology. As a consequence we prove that for any atoroidal free homotopy class and any sufficiently small T>0, any magnetic flow associated to the Dirac magnetic monopole has a closed orbit of period T belonging to the given free homotopy class. In the case where the Dirac magnetic monopole admits a bounded primitive on the universal cover we also prove the Conley conjecture for Hamiltonians that are quadratic at infinity, i.e., we show that such Hamiltonians have infinitely many periodic orbits.

The Conley-Zehnder indices of the rotating Kepler problem

We determine the Conley-Zehnder indices of all periodic orbits of the rotating Kepler problem for energies below the critical Jacobi energy. Consequently, we show the universal cover of the bounded component of the regularized energy hypersurface is dynamically convex. Moreover, in the universal cover there is always precisely one periodic orbit with Conley-Zehnder index 3, namely the lift of the doubly covered retrograde circular orbit.

The Cartan geometry of the rotating Kepler problem

We investigate the Cartan and Finsler geometry of the rotating Kepler problem, a limit case of the restricted three body problem that arises if the mass of the one of the primaries goes to zero. We show that the Hamiltonian for the rotating Kepler problem can be regarded as the Legendre transform of a certain family of Finsler metrics on the two-sphere. For very negative energy levels, these Finsler metrics are close to the round metric, and the associated flag curvature is hence positive. On the other hand, we show that the flag curvature can become negative once the energy level becomes sufficiently high.

Displaceability and the mean Euler characteristic

In this note we show that the mean Euler characteristic of equivariant symplectic homology is an effective obstruction against the existence of displaceable exact contact embeddings. As an application we show that certain Brieskorn manifolds do not admit displaceable exact contact embeddings.
