Role of gluons in soft and semi-hard multiple hadron production in pp collisions at LHC

Hadron inclusive spectra in pp collisions are analyzed within the modified quark-gluon string model including both the longitudinal and transverse motion of quarks in the proton in the wide region of initial energies. The self-consistent analysis shows that the experimental data on the inclusive spectra of light hadrons like pions and kaons at ISR energies can be satisfactorily described at transverse momenta not larger than 1-2 GeV/c. We discuss some difficulties to apply this model at energies above the ISR and suggest to include the distribution of gluons in the proton unintegrated over the internal transverse momentum. It leads to an increase in the inclusive spectra of hadrons and allows us to extend the satisfactory description of the data in the central rapidity region at energies higher than ISR.

Forward production of heavy flavour hadrons in p-p collisions and intrinsic charm and bottom in proton

We present the theoretical results on the forward Lambda_b production in pp collisions obtained within the soft QCD, namely the quark gluon string model, at LHC energies. It can give us useful information on the Regge trajectories of the (b{\bar b}) mesons. An opportunity to find the information on the intrinsic charm and bottom in the proton by analyzing the forward heavy flavour hadron production in pp collisions is discussed.

A unique signal of excited bosons in dijet data from pp-collisions

With this note we would like to draw attention to a possible novel signal of new physics in dijet data at the hadron colliders. Usually it is accepted that all exotic models predict that these two jets populate the central (pseudo)rapidity region where y_{1,2} ~ 0. Contrary, the excited bosons do not contribute into this region, but produce an excess of dijet events over the almost flat QCD background in chi = exp|y_1-y_2| away from this region.

Gluons in proton and soft pp collisions at high energies

The hadron inclusive spectra in pp collisions at high energies are analyzed within a soft QCD model, namely the quark-gluon string model. In addition to the sea quark distribution in the incoming proton we consider also the unintegrated gluon distribution that has an increasing behaviour when the gluon transverse momentum grows. It leads to an increase of the inclusive spectra of hadrons and their multiplicity in the central rapidity region of pp collision at LHC energies.

Anomalously interacting extra neutral bosons

We study phenomenological consequences of the Standard Model extension by the new spin-1 chiral fields with the internal quantum numbers of the electroweak Higgs doublets. There are at least three different classes of theories, all motivated by the hierarchy problem, which predict new vector weak-doublets with masses not far from the electro-weak scale. We discuss resonance production of these neutral chiral Z* bosons at hadron colliders. The bosons can be observed as a Breit-Wigner resonance peak in the invariant dilepton mass distributions in the same way as the well-known extra gauge Z' bosons. This includes them into a list of very interesting objects for early searches with the first LHC data. Moreover, the Z* bosons have unique signatures in transverse momentum, angular and pseudorapidity distributions of the final leptons, which allow to distinguish them from the other heavy neutral resonances.

Forward production of beauty baryons in pp collisions at LHC

The production of charmed and beauty baryons in proton-proton collisions at high energies is analyzed within the modified quark-gluon string model. We present some predictions for the experiments on the forward beauty baryon production in pp collisions at LHC energies. This analysis allows us to find useful information on the Regge trajectories of the heavy (b barb) mesons and the sea beauty quark distributions in the proton.

Beauty baryon production in pp collisions at LHC and b quark distribution in proton

The production of charmed and beauty hadrons in proton-proton collisions at high energies are analyzed within the modified quark-gluon string model (QGSM) including the internal motion of quarks in colliding hadrons. We present some predictions for the future experiments on the beauty baryon production in $pp$ collisions at LHC energies. This analysis allows us to find interesting information on the Regge trajectories of the heavy (b{\bar b}) mesons and the sea beauty quark distributions in the proton.

Transverse momentum spectra of D and B mesons in hadron collisions at high energies

Transverse momentum spectra of charmed and beauty mesons produced in proton-proton and proton-antiproton collisions at high energies are analyzed within the modified quark-gluon string model (QGSM) including the internal motion of quarks in colliding hadrons. It is shown that this approach can describe rather satisfactorily the experimental data at not large values of the transverse momentum where the NLO QCD calculation has a big uncertainty. We also show that using both the QGSM and the NLO QCD one can describe these data in a wide region of transverse momenta and give some predictions for the future LHC experiments.

Simulation of the Avalanche Process in the G-APD and Circuitry Analysis of the SiPM

The discrete modeling of the Geiger-mode APD is considered. Results of modeling and experimental measurements with the SiPM show that the known formula for the charge of the avalanche pulse Q=dU*Cd underestimates its value. In addition, it is seen from the dynamic of the avalanche multiplication that the resistor Rq in photodiode, usually called a quenching resistor, in reality fulfills only the restoring function. The SiPM restoring time, taken into account the number of pixel N and the load resistance R, is T=Cd*(Rq+NR).

Prospects for studies of high-energy solar cosmic rays with ATLAS

The ATLAS detector is intended to verify the standard model and to search for new physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC, CERN). In addition to this primary goal, it also allows detection of muons of cosmic rays. On the other hand, unusual bursts of the muon intensity, which correlate with powerful solar flares were recorded and investigated earlier at the Baksan Underground Scintillation Telescope (BUST, INR, Russia) in period from 1981 to 2006 (~2.5 solar cycles). The nature of the muon bursts and their probable relation to the solar cosmic rays is still not quite clear. ATLAS has an excellent muon system allowing search for similar muon bursts. Within the next few years, when the LHC and ATLAS should start to operate, an increase in the solar activity is expected in the new 24th cycle. It increases the probability of finding the muon bursts from powerful flares. Hence ATLAS has a good opportunity to verify the relation of muon bursts to the solar cosmic rays.

Direct Search for Dark Matter - Striking the Balance - and the Future

Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) are among the main candidates for the relic dark matter (DM). The idea of the direct DM detection relies on elastic spin-dependent (SD) and spin-independent (SI) interaction of WIMPs with target nuclei. In this review paper the relevant formulae for WIMP event rate calculations are collected. For estimations of the WIMP-proton and WIMP-neutron SD and SI cross sections the effective low-energy minimal supersymmetric standard model is used. The traditional one-coupling-dominance approach for evaluation of the exclusion curves is described. Further, the mixed spin-scalar coupling approach is discussed. It is demonstrated, taking the high-spin Ge-73 dark matter experiment HDMS as an example, how one can drastically improve the sensitivity of the exclusion curves within the mixed spin-scalar coupling approach, as well as due to a new procedure of background subtraction from the measured spectrum. A general discussion on the information obtained from exclusion curves is given. The necessity of clear WIMP direct detection signatures for a solution of the dark matter problem, is pointed out.

Proposal for chiral bosons search at LHC via their unique new signature

The resonance production of new chiral spin-1 bosons and their detection through the Drell--Yan process at the CERN LHC is considered. Quantitative evaluations of various differential cross-sections of the chiral bosons production are made within the CalcHEP package. The new neutral chiral bosons can be observed as a Breit--Wigner resonance peak in the invariant dilepton mass distribution, as usual. However, unique new signatures of the chiral bosons exist. First, there is no Jacobian peak in the lepton transverse momentum distribution. Second, the lepton angular distribution in the Collins-Soper frame for the high on-peak invariant masses of the lepton pairs has a peculiar "swallowtail" shape.

On Higgs mass generation mechanism in the Standard Model

The mass-generation mechanism is the most urgent problem of the modern particle physics. The discovery and study of the Higgs boson with the Large Hadron Collider at CERN are the highest priority steps to solve the problem. In this paper, the Standard Model Higgs mechanism of the elementary particle mass generation is reviewed with pedagogical details. The discussion of the Higgs quadric self-coupling λparameter and the bounds to the Higgs boson mass are presented. In particular, the unitarity, triviality, and stability constraints on the Higgs boson mass are discussed. The generation of the finite value for the λparameter due to quantum corrections via effective potential is illustrated. Some simple predictions for the top quark and the Higgs boson masses are given when both the top Yukawa coupling and the Higgs self-coupling λare equal to 1.

Search for gluinos with ATLAS at LHC

Prospects for ATLAS observation of a SUSY-like signal from two gluinos are investigated within a certain region of the mSUGRA parameter space, where the cross section of the two gluinos production via gluon-gluon fusion is estimated at a rather high level of 13 pb. The event selection trigger uses a very clear signature of the process (4 jets + 4 muons + up to 4 secondary vertices topology) when final decay products of each gluino are b-anti-b and muon-anti-muon pairs and the lightest SUSY particle, the neutralino. Rather high transverse missing energy carried away by two neutralinos is an essential signature of the event and also allows the relevant Standard Model background to be reduced significantly. The generation and reconstruction processes are performed by means of the ATLAS common software framework ATHENA.

Nuclear spin structure in dark matter search: The finite momentum transfer limit

Spin-dependent elastic scattering of weakly interacting massive dark matter particles (WIMP) off nuclei is reviewed. All available, within different nuclear models, structure functions S(q) for finite momentum transfer (q>0) are presented. These functions describe the recoil energy dependence of the differential event rate due to the spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon interactions. This paper, together with the previous paper ``Nuclear spin structure in dark matter search: The zero momentum transfer limit'', completes our review of the nuclear spin structure calculations involved in the problem of direct dark matter search.
