Hunting a light CP-violating Higgs via diffraction at the LHC

We study the central diffractive production of the (three neutral) Higgs bosons, with a rapidity gap on either side, in an MSSM scenario with CP-violation. We consider the bb-bar and tautau-bar decay for the light H_1 boson and the four b-jet final state for the heavy H_2 and H_3 bosons, and discuss the corresponding backgrounds. A direct indication of the existence of CP-violation can come from the observation of either an azimuthal asymmetry in the angular distribution of the tagged forward protons (for the exclusive pp -> p+H+p process) or of a sin(2phi) contribution in the azimuthal correlation between the transverse energy flows in the proton fragmentation regions for the process with the diffractive dissociation of both incoming protons (pp -> X+H+Y). We emphasise the advantage of reactions with the rapidity gaps (that is production by the pomeron-pomeron fusion) to probe CP parity and to determine the quantum numbers of the produced central object.

Extending the study of the Higgs sector at the LHC by proton tagging

We show that forward proton tagging may significantly enlarge the potential of studying the Higgs sector at the LHC. We concentrate on Higgs production via central exclusive diffractive processes (CEDP). Particular attention is paid to regions in the MSSM parameter space where the partial width of the Higgs boson decay into two gluons much exceeds the SM case; here the CEDP are found to have special advantages.

Central exclusive diffractive production as a spin--parity analyser: from hadrons to Higgs

We present the general rules for double-Reggeon production of objects with different spins and parities. The existing experimental information on resonance production in these central exclusive diffractive processes is discussed. The absorptive corrections are calculated and found to depend strongly on the quantum numbers of the produced states. The central exclusive diffractive production of 0^+ and 0^- Higgs bosons is studied as an illustrative topical example of the use of the general rules. The signal for diffractive 0^+ and 0^- Higgs production at the LHC is evaluated using, as an example, the minimal supersymmetric model, with large tan(beta).

Hadronic Radiation Patterns in Vector Boson Fusion Higgs Production

We consider the hadronic radiation patterns for the generic process of bb + 2 forward jet production at the LHC, where the (centrally produced) bb originate either from a Higgs, a Z or from standard QCD production processes. A numerical technique for evaluating the radiation patterns for non-trivial final states is introduced and shown to agree with the standard analytic results for more simple processes. Significant differences between the radiation patterns for the Higgs signal and the background processes are observed and quantified. This suggests that hadronic radiation patterns could be used as an additional diagnostic tool in Higgs searches in this channel at the LHC.

Unitarity effects in hard diffraction at HERA

We study how factorization breaking changes when going from diffractive deep inelastic scattering to diffractive photoproduction of dijets. These processes offer a sensitive probe of the interplay of soft and hard mechanisms in QCD. We demonstrate that unitarity effects are already important in the gluon distribution for x ~ 10^{-4}, for quite a wide range of Q^2.

Diffraction of Protons and Nuclei at High Energies

We review the description of high energy diffraction from both the s and t channel viewpoints, and demonstrate their consistency. We emphasize the role played by s channel unitarity and multi-Pomeron exchanges. We explain how these effects suppress hard diffractive processes. As examples, we describe the calculation of diffractive dijet production at the Tevatron and predict some of the rich diffractive phenomena accessible in proton-nuclear collisions at RHIC.

Factorization breaking in diffractive dijet production

We study diffractive hard dijet production, with one or two rapidity gaps, at high energies. We emphasize that both hard and Regge factorization are broken in these processes. We show that a multi-Pomeron-exchange model for screening effects gives a specific pattern for the breakdown of factorization, which is in good agreement with diffractive dijet data collected at the Tevatron.

A Z-Monitor to Calibrate Higgs Production via Vector Boson Fusion with Rapidity Gaps at the LHC

We study central Z-boson production accompanied by rapidity gaps on either side as a way to gauge Higgs weak boson fusion production at the LHC. We analyse the possible backgrounds for the bb-decay mode and show that these can be substantially reduced. Special attention is paid to the evaluation of the gap survival factor, which is the major source of theoretical uncertainty in the rate of H, Z and W central production events with rapidity gaps.

Physics with forward protons at hadron colliders

We emphasize the importance of tagging the outgoing forward protons to sharpen the predictions for New Physics at the LHC. We show that exclusive double-diffractive Higgs production, pp-->p+H+p, followed by the H-->bb decay, could play an important role in identifying a 'light' Higgs boson.

Diffractive Higgs Production: Myths and Reality

A critical comparison is made between recent predictions of the cross sections for diffractive Higgs production at the Tevatron and the LHC. We show that the huge spread of the predictions arises either because different diffractive processes are studied or because important effects are overlooked. Exclusive production offers a reliable, viable Higgs signal at the LHC provided that proton taggers are installed.

Ways to detect a light Higgs boson at the LHC

We summarize the possible processes which may be used to search for a Higgs boson, of mass in the range 114-130 GeV, at the LHC. We discuss, in detail, two processes with rapidity gaps: exclusive Higgs production with tagged outgoing protons and production by Weak Boson Fusion, in each case taking H -> bbbar as the signal. We make an extensive study of all possible bbbar backgrounds, and discuss the relevant experimental issues. We emphasize the special features of these signals, and of their background processes, and show that they could play an important role in identifying a light Higgs boson at the LHC.

Forward proton tagging as a way to identify a light Higgs boson at the LHC

We show that exclusive double-diffractive Higgs production, pp -> p+H+p, followed by the H -> bbbar decay, could play an important role in identifying a `light' Higgs boson at the LHC, provided that the forward outgoing protons are tagged. We predict the cross sections for the signal and for all possible bbbar backgrounds.

Physics with tagged forward protons at the LHC

We emphasize the importance of tagging the outgoing forward protons to sharpen the predictions for New Physics at the LHC (such as the diffractive production of a light Higgs boson). The rescattering effects lead to a rich distinctive structure of the cross section as a function of the transverse momenta of the protons. We show that a study of the correlations between the proton transverse momenta for double-diffractive production of central dijets will provide a detailed check of the whole diffractive formalism. Adopting a perturbative two-gluon structure of the Pomeron, we emphasize that 2++ quarkonium production, via Pomeron-Pomeron fusion, is strongly suppressed. This offers a favourable production mechanism for non-qqbar states, such as glueballs.

Photon-exchange processes at hadron colliders as a probe of the dynamics of diffraction

The rich structure of photon-exchange processes at hadron colliders is studied. We discuss central vector meson production pp --> p + J/psi + p, W production pp --> p + W + X and mu+ mu- production. Each process has distinct, and large, soft pp rescattering effects, which can be directly observed by detecting the outgoing protons. This allows a probe of the optical density of the proton, which plays a crucial role in the evaluation of the rapidity gap survival probabilities in diffractive-like processes at hadron colliders. We note that an alternative mechanism for J/psi production is odderon, instead of photon, exchange; and that the ratio of odderon to photon contributions is enhanced (suppressed) for phi(Upsilon) vector meson production.

Prospects for New Physics observations in diffractive processes at the LHC and Tevatron

We study the double-diffractive production of various heavy systems (e.g. Higgs, dijet, t tbar and SUSY particles) at LHC and Tevatron collider energies. In each case we compute the probability that the rapidity gaps, which occur on either side of the produced system, survive the effects of soft rescattering and QCD bremsstrahlung effects. We calculate both the luminosity for different production mechanisms, and a wide variety of subprocess cross sections. The results allow numerical predictions to be readily made for the cross sections of all these processes at the LHC and the Tevatron collider. For example, we predict that the cross section for the exclusive double-diffractive production of a 120 GeV Higgs boson at the LHC is about 3 fb, and that the QCD background in the b bbar decay mode is about 4 times smaller than the Higgs signal if the experimental missing-mass resolution is 1 GeV. For completeness we also discuss production via gamma gamma or WW fusion.

Scanning of the e+e- to pi+pi- cross--section below 1 GeV by radiative events with untagged photon

We discuss an inclusive approach to the measurement of the e+e- --> pi+ pi- cross--section by the radiative return method without photon tagging. The essential part of this approach is the choice of rules for event selection which provide rejection of events with 3 (or more) pions and decrease the final--state radiation background. The radiative corrections to the initial--state radiation process are computed for DAPhNE conditions, using the quasi--real electron approximation for both, the cross--section and the underlying kinematics. The two cases of restricted and unrestricted pion phase space are considered. Some numerical calculations illustrate our analytical results.

Structure of the final states in Higgs production at Hadronic Colliders

We quantify the rate and the signal-to-background ratio for Higgs $\to b\bar{b}$ detection in double-diffractive events at the Tevatron and the LHC. The signal is predicted to be very small at the Tevatron, but observable at the LHC. We exemplify the diagnostic power of hadronic antenna pattern by considering the topology of hadronic flow corresponding to Higgs $\to b\bar{b}$ events.
