Common field-induced quantum critical point in high-temperature superconductors and heavy-fermion metals

High-temperature superconductors (HTSC) and heavy-fermion (HF) metals exhibit extraordinary properties. They are so unusual that the traditional Landau paradigm of quasiparticles does not apply. It is widely believed that utterly new concepts are required to describe the underlying physics. There is a fundamental question: how many concepts do we need to describe the above physical mechanisms? This cannot be answered on purely experimental or theoretical grounds. Rather, we have to use both of them. Recently, in HTSC, the new and exciting measurements have been performed, demonstrating a puzzling magnetic field induced transition from non-Fermi liquid to Landau Fermi liquid behavior. We show, that in spite of very different microscopic nature of HTSC and HF metals, the behavior of HTSC is similar to that observed in HF compounds. We employ a theory, based on fermion condensation quantum phase transition which is able to resolve the above puzzles.

Magnetoelectric effect in mixed valency oxides mediated by charge carriers

We show that the presence of free carriers in a substance can generate the multiferroic behavior. Namely, if the substance has mixed-valence ions, which can supply free carriers and have electric dipole and spin moments, all three types of long-range order (ferromagnetic, ferroelectric and magnetoelectric (ME)) can occur at low temperature. The physical origin of the effect is that charge carriers can mediate the multiferroic behavior via spin - spin (RKKY), dipole-dipole and dipole - spin interactions. Our estimate of the interaction magnitude shows that there exist an optimal carrier concentration, at which the strength of ME interaction is maximal and comparable to that of spin-spin RKKY interaction. This permits to conclude that in substances, where RKKY interaction between local spins is not small, a substantial value of free carriers mediated ME interaction can occur. Our analysis shows that disorder in the above substances does not suppress multiferroic effects.

Universal Behavior of Two-Dimensional 3He at Low Temperatures

On the example of two-dimensional (2D) 3He we demonstrate that the main universal features of its experimental temperature T - density x phase diagram [see M. Neumann, J. Nyéki, J. Saunders, Science 317, 1356 (2007)] look like those in the heavy-fermion metals. Our comprehensive theoretical analysis of experimental situation in 2D 3He allows us to propose a simple expression for effective mass M^*(T,x), describing all diverse experimental facts in 2D 3He in unified manner and demonstrating that the universal behavior of M^*(T,x) coincides with that observed in HF metals.

Universal low-temperature behavior of the CePd_{1-x}Rh_x ferromagnet

The heavy-fermion metal CePd_{1-x}Rh_x evolves from ferromagnetism at x=0 to a non-magnetic state at some critical concentration x_c. Utilizing the quasiparticle picture and the concept of fermion condensation quantum phase transition (FCQPT), we address the question about non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behavior of ferromagnet CePd_{1-x}Rh_x and show that it coincides with that of both antiferromagnet YbRh_2(Si_{0.95}Ge_{0.05})_2 and paramagnet CeRu_2Si_2 and CeNi_2Ge_2. We conclude that the NFL behavior being independent of the peculiarities of specific alloy, is universal, while numerous quantum critical points assumed to be responsible for the NFL behavior of different HF metals can be well reduced to the only quantum critical point related to FCQPT.

Quasiparticles and quantum phase transition in universal low-temperature properties of heavy-fermion metals

We demonstrate, that the main universal features of the low temperature experimental $H-T$ phase diagram of CeCoIn5 and other heavy-fermion metals can be well explained using Landau paradigm of quasiparticles. The main point of our theory is that above quasiparticles form so-called fermion-condensate state, achieved by a fermion condensation quantum phase transition (FCQPT). When a heavy fermion liquid undergoes FCQPT, the fluctuations accompanying above quantum critical point are strongly suppressed and cannot destroy the quasiparticles. The comparison of our theoretical results with experimental data on CeCoIn5 have shown that the electronic system of above substance provides a unique opportunity to study the relationship between quasiparticles properties and non-Fermi liquid behavior.

Topological solitons in highly anisotropic two dimensional ferromagnets

e study the solitons, stabilized by spin precession in a classical two--dimensional lattice model of Heisenberg ferromagnets with non-small easy--axis anisotropy. The properties of such solitons are treated both analytically using the continuous model including higher then second powers of magnetization gradients, and numerically for a discrete set of the spins on a square lattice. The dependence of the soliton energy $E$ on the number of spin deviations (bound magnons) $N$ is calculated. We have shown that the topological solitons are stable if the number $N$ exceeds some critical value $N_{\rm{cr}}$. For $N < N_{\rm{cr}}$ and the intermediate values of anisotropy constant $K_{\mathrm{eff}} <0.35J$ ($J$ is an exchange constant), the soliton properties are similar to those for continuous model; for example, soliton energy is increasing and the precession frequency $ ω(N)$ is decreasing monotonously with $N$ growth. For high enough anisotropy $K_{\mathrm{eff}} > 0.6 J$ we found some fundamentally new soliton features absent for continuous models incorporating even the higher powers of magnetization gradients. For high anisotropy, the dependence of soliton energy E(N) on the number of bound magnons become non-monotonic, with the minima at some "magic" numbers of bound magnons. Soliton frequency $ω(N)$ have quite irregular behavior with step-like jumps and negative values of $ω$ for some regions of $N$. Near these regions, stable static soliton states, stabilized by the lattice effects, exist.

Theory of domain structure in ferromagnetic phase of diluted magnetic semiconductors near the phase transition temperature

We discuss the influence of disorder on domain structure formation in ferromagnetic phase of diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS) of p-type. Using analytical arguments we show the existence of critical ratio $ν_{\rm {cr}}$ of concentration of charge carriers and magnetic ions such that sample critical thickness $L_{\rm{cr}}$ (such that at $L ν_{\rm {cr}}$ the sample is monodomain. This feature makes DMS different from conventional ordered magnets as it gives a possibility to control the sample critical thickness and emerging domain structure period by variation of $ν$. As concentration of magnetic impurities grows, $ν_{\rm {cr}}\to \infty$ restoring conventional behavior of ordered magnets. Above facts have been revealed by examination of the temperature of transition to inhomogeneous magnetic state (stripe domain structure) in a slab of finite thickness $L$ of p-type DMS. Our analysis is carried out on the base of homogeneous exchange part of magnetic free energy of DMS calculated by us earlier [\prb, {\bf 67}, 195203 (2003)].

Phase Diagram of Heavy Fermion Metal CeCoIn5

We present a comprehensive analysis of the low temperature experimental H-T phase diagram of CeCoIn5. The main universal features of the diagram can be explained within the Fermi-liquid theory provided that quasiparticles form so called fermion-condensate state. We show that in this case the fluctuations accompanying an ordinary quantum critical point are strongly suppressed and cannot destroy the quasiparticles. Analyzing the phase diagram and giving predictions, we demonstrate that the electronic system of CeCoIn5 provides a unique opportunity to study the relationship between quasiparticles properties and non-Fermi liquid behavior.

Domain enhanced interlayer coupling in ferroelectric/paraelectric superlattices

We investigate the ferroelectric phase transition and domain formation in a periodic superlattice consisting of alternate ferroelectric (FE) and paraelectric (PE) layers of nanometric thickness. We find that the polarization domains formed in the different FE layers can interact with each other via the PE layers. By coupling the electrostatic equations with those obtained by minimizing the Ginzburg-Landau functional we calculate the critical temperature of transition Tc as a function of the FE/PE superlattice wavelength and quantitatively explain the recent experimental observation of a thickness dependence of the ferroelectric transition temperature in KTaO3/KNbO3 strained-layer superlattices.

Within the framework of the phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau theory influence of semiconductor electrodes on the properties of thin ferroelectric films is considered. The contribution of the semiconductor electrodes with different Debye screening length of carriers is included in functional of free energy. The influence of highly doped semiconductor electrodes on the depolarization field and the film properties was shown to be great.

The contribution of the metallic electrodes with different screening length of carriers is included in functional of free energy. The influence of conventional metallic electrodes on the depolarization field and the film properties was shown to be practically the same as for superconductive ones.

The nature of an enhanced ferroelectric phase transition temperature in perovskite-based solid solutions

We explain the phenomena of ferroelectric phase transition temperature $T_c$ enhancement beyond the end members in perovskite solid solutions like BiMeO$_3$-PbTiO$_3$ (Me=Sc, In, etc.) is related to nonlinear and spatial correlation effects. The explanation is based on the calculation of $T_c$ in the framework of our random field theory with additional account for nonlinear effects in the above substances. We show that the maximum of $T_c$ for certain PbTiO$_3$ content takes place when coefficient of nonlinearity is positive, the value of this coefficient is found from best fit between theory and experiment. This nonlinearity coefficient is the only adjustable parameter of the theory. We show that enhancement of positive nonlinearity coefficients enhances greatly the $T_c$ maximum over its value for end members. The theory lays the foundation to calculate not only $T_c$ for above solid solutions but virtually any equilibrium and/or nonequilibrium thermodynamic characteristics such as static and dynamic dielectric susceptibility, specific heat etc as a functions of PbTiO$_3$ content, temperature, electric field and other external parameters.

The enhancement of ferromagnetism in uniaxially stressed diluted magnetic semiconductors

We predict a new mechanism of enhancement of ferromagnetic phase transition temperature $T_c$ in uniaxially stressed diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS) of p-type. Our prediction is based on comparative studies of both Heisenberg (inherent to undistorted DMS with cubic lattice) and Ising (which can be applied to strongly enough stressed DMS) models in a random field approximation permitting to take into account the spatial inhomogeneity of spin-spin interaction. Our calculations of phase diagrams show that area of parameters for existence of DMS-ferromagnetism in Ising model is much larger than that in Heisenberg model.

Ferroelectric thin films properties: depolarization field and Landau free-energy coefficients renormalization

The calculation of the polarization in ferroelectric thin films is performed using an analytical solution of the Euler-Lagrange differential equation with boundary conditions with different extrapolation lengths of positive sign on the surfaces. The depolarization field effect is taken into account in the model for a short-circuited single domain film, that is a perfect insulator. It is shown that the calculation of the polarization and other properties profiles and average values can be reduced to the minimization of the free energy expressed as a power series of the average polarization with a renormalized coefficient which depends on temperature, film thickness, extrapolation lengths, and a coefficient for the polarization gradient term in the free energy functional, the depolarization field being also included into the renormalized coefficient. The function defining the space distribution properties is calculated as well and its amplitude is shown to coincide with the average polarization. The detailed calculations of the spontaneous polarization, dielectric susceptibility and pyrocoefficient is performed. The divergence of the dielectric susceptibility and pyrocoefficient for critical parameters of the thickness induced ferroelectric phase transition, namely at temperature T(cl) and critical length l(c), is shown to exist with and without the depolarization field contribution, although the values of T(cl) and l(c) are different in both cases. The detailed analysis of the depolarization field space distribution and of this field dependence on temperature and film thickness is performed.

Suppression of carrier induced ferromagnetism by composition and spin fluctuations in diluted magnetic semiconductors

We suggest an approach to account for spatial (composition) and thermal fluctuations in "disordered" magnetic models (e.g. Heisenberg, Ising) with given spatial dependence of magnetic spin-spin interaction. Our approach is based on introduction of fluctuating molecular field (rather than mean field) acting between the spins. The distribution function of the above field is derived self-consistently. In general case this function is not Gaussian, latter asymptotics occurs only at sufficiently large spins (magnetic ions) concentrations $n_i$. Our approach permits to derive the equation for a critical temperature $T_c$ of ferromagnetic phase transition with respect to the above fluctuations. We apply our theory to the analysis of influence of composition fluctuations on $T_c$ in diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS) with RKKY indirect spin-spin interaction.

Size effects of pyroelectric coefficient and dielectric susceptibility in ferroelectric thin films

We calculate the pyrocoefficient, static dielectric susceptibility profiles and its thickness dependence of ferroelectric thin films. Also, the temperature dependences of above quantities have been calculated. For the calculations we use Landau phenomenological theory, leading to Lame equations. These equations subject to boundary conditions with different extrapolation length on the surfaces have been solved numerically. The divergency of pyroelectric coefficient and static dielectric susceptibility in the vicinity of thickness induced ferroelectric phase transition (i.e. at $l\approx l_c$ or $% T\approx T_{cl}$) has been shown to be the most prominent size effect in ferroelectric thin films.

The electric dipoles randomly distributed over the system were considered as a random field sources. We derive a random field distribution function for different orientations of the electric dipoles with nonlinear and spatial correlation effects included.

Phase diagram of mixed system of ferroelectric relaxors in the random field theory framework

We suggest a random field based model for calculation of physical properties of mixed ferroelectric relaxors. Our model naturally incorporates the different orientations of electric dipoles (related to different solid solution components) as well as the contribution of nonlinear and correlation effects of random field. We calculate the transition temperature $T_c$ as well as concentrational and temperature dependence of order parameters.
