Probing Electron Interactions in a Two-Dimensional System by Quantum Magneto-Oscillations

We have experimentally studied the renormalized effective mass m* and Dingle temperature T_D in two spin subbands with essentially different electron populations. Firstly, we found that the product (m*T_D) that determines damping of quantum oscillations, to the first approximation, is the same in the majority and minority subbands even at the spin polarization degree as high as 66\%. This result confirms the theoretical predictions that the interaction takes place at high energies ~ E_F rather than within a narrow strip of energies E_F\pm k_BT. Secondly, to the next approximation, we revealed a difference in the damping factor of the two spin subbands, which causes skewness of the oscillation lineshape. In the absence of the in-plane magnetic field, the damping factor (m*T_D) is systematically smaller in the spin-majority subband. The difference, quantified with the skew factor γ= (T_{D\downarrow}-T_{D\uparrow})/2T_{D0} can be as large as 20%. The skew factor tends to decrease as B_\parallel or temperature grow, or perpendicular field decreases; for low electron densities and high in-plane fields the skew factor even changes sign. Finally, we compared the temperature and magnetic field dependencies of the magneto-oscillations amplitude with predictions of the interaction correction theory, and found, besides some qualitative similarities, several quantitative and qualitative differences. To explain qualitatively our results, we suggested an empirical model that assumes the existence of easily magnetized triplet scatterers on the Si/SiO_2 interface.

Multiple Andreev reflections spectroscopy of two-gap 1111- and 11 Fe-based superconductors

Using the "break-junction" technique we prepared and studied superconductor - constriction - superconductor nanocontacts in polycrystalline samples of Fe-based superconductors CeO$_{0.88}$F$_{0.12}$FeAs (Ce-1111; $T_C^{\rm bulk} = 41 \pm 1 K$), LaO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$FeAs (La-1111; $T_C^{\rm bulk} = 28 \pm 1 K$), and FeSe ($T_C^{\rm bulk} = 12 \pm 1 K$). We detected two subharmonic gap structures related with multiple Andreev reflections, indicating the presence of two superconducting gaps with the BCS-ratios $2Δ_L/k_BT_C = 4.2 ÷5.9$ and $2Δ_S/k_BT_C\sim 1 \ll 3.52$, respectively. Temperature dependences of the two gaps $Δ_{L,S}(T)$ in FeSe indicate a $k$-space proximity effect between two superconducting condensates. For the studied iron-based superconductors we found a linear relation between the gap $Δ_L$ and magnetic resonance energy, $E_{\rm res} \approx 2Δ_L$.

Coexistence of Superconductor and Spin-Density Wave in (TMTSF)2ClO4: Spatial Structure of the Two-phase State

We report comprehensive (magneto)transport studies of the two-phase state in (TMTSF)2ClO4, where superconducting (SC) phase coexists with spin-density wave insulator (SDW). By tuning the degree of ClO4 anion ordering in controlled manner we drive SDW state and study the evolution of the SC spatial texture. We find that as SDW is suppressed, SC regions initially appear inside the SDW insulator in a form of filaments extended in the interlayer direction and further merge into the two-dimensional sheets across the most conducting axis of the crystal. We demonstrate that almost all our results can be explained within the soliton phase model, though with several assumptions they can also be interpreted by the creation of non-uniform deformations. We believe that the anisotropy is intrinsic to SC/SDW coexistence in quasi one-dimensional superconductors.

Role of Anion Ordering in the Coexistence of Spin-Density-Wave and Superconductivity in (TMTSF)2ClO4

Using various transport and magnetotransport probes we study the coexistence of spin-density wave and superconductor states in (TMTSF)2ClO4 at various degrees of ClO4 anions ordering. In the two-phase complex state when both superconductivity and spin-density wave are observed in transport, we find prehistory effects, enhancement of the superconducting critical field, and strong spatial anisotropy of the superconducting state. These features are inconsistent with the conventional model of structural inhomogeneities produced by anion ordering transition. We reveal instead that superconductor and spin-density wave regions overlap on the temperature -- dimerization gap V phase diagram, where V is varied by anion ordering. The effect of anion ordering on (TMTSF)2ClO4 properties is thus analogous to that of pressure on (TMTSF)2X (X=PF6 or AsF6), thereby unifying general picture of the coexistence of superconductivity and spin-density wave in these compounds.

Electron-electron interaction correction and magnetoresistance in tilted fields in Si-based 2D systems

We study diffusive electron-electron interaction correction to conductivity by analyzing simultaneously $ρ_{xx}$ and $ρ_{xy}$ for disordered 2D electron systems in Si in tilted magnetic field. Tilting the field is shown to be a straightforward tool to disentangle spin and orbital effects. In particular, by changing the tilt angle we prove experimentally that in the field range $gμ_BB>k_BT$ the correction depends on modulus of magnetic field rather than on its direction, which is expected for a system with isotropic $g$-factor. In the high-field limit the correction behaves as $\ln (B)$, as expected theoretically (Lee, Ramakrishnan, Phys. Rev. B{\bf 26}, 4009 (1982)). Our data prove that the diffusive electron-electron interaction correction to conductivity is not solely responsible for the huge and temperature dependent magnetoresistance in parallel field, typically observed in Si-MOSFETs.

Experimental study of intrinsic multiple Andreev reflections effect in GdO(F)FeAs superconductor array junctions

We report the first observation of the intrinsic multiple Andreev reflections effect (IMARE) in S-n-S-...-S-arrays (S = superconductor, n = normal metal) formed by "break-junction" technique in GdO(F)FeAs superconductor (Tc = 48 - 53 K). We show that superconducting gap peculiarities at dI/dV-spectra sharpen dramatically in the arrays as compared with that in the single-contact spectra; this enables to improve significantly accuracy of the bulk superconducting parameters determination. Using IMARE, we determined the large and the small gap values Δ_L = 11 +- 1.1 meV and Δ_S = 2.6 +- 0.4 meV. The BCS-ratio 2Δ_L/kTc^{local} = 5.0 - 5.9 > 3.52 (Tc^{local} is the contact area critical temperature) evidences for a strong electron-boson coupling. The results obtained agree well with our previous data by Andreev spectroscopy for single SnS-contacts.

Spin-Droplet State of an Interacting 2D Electron System

We report thermodynamic magnetization measurements of two-dimensional electrons in several high mobility Si metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors. We provide evidence for an easily polarizable electron state in a wide density range from insulating to deep into the metallic phase. The temperature and magnetic field dependence of the magnetization is consistent with the formation of large-spin droplets in the insulating phase. These droplets melt in the metallic phase with increasing density and temperature, although they survive up to large densities.

Bulk magnetization and strong intrinsic pinning in Ni-doped BaFe2As2 single crystals

We report on measurements of isothermal irreversible magnetization loops (M(H)) of Ni-doped BaFe2-xNixAs2 single crystals with x=0.1 and x=0.14 in magnetic fields up to 14T. For both samples in field H//c-axis and H//ab-plane, critical current density calculated from M(H) curves exceeds 106 A/cm2 at low temperatures suggesting strong intrinsic pinning in our crystals. In a broad temperature range 2-17K in both field orientations nearly optimally doped single crystal displays second magnetization peak (fish-tail effect). For H//c-axis, curves of the normalized pinning force, as a function of reduced field, measured at different temperatures obey scaling relation with peak position 0.33 for BaFe1.86Ni0.14As2 crystal and 0.4 for BaFe1.9Ni0.1As2 sample indicating single normal point pinning mechanism. In striking contrast, in H//ab-plane orientation, the scaling of curves is absent.

Multigap Superconductivity in GdFeAsO$_{0.88}$ Evidenced by SnS-Andreev Spectroscopy

Using intrinsic multiple Andreev reflection effect (IMARE) spectroscopy we studied superconducting properties of nearly optimal oxygen-deficient GdFeAsO$_{0.88}$ polycrystalline samples (bulk critical temperatures $T_C^{bulk} = 49 ÷52$\,K). Temperature dependences for two superconducting gaps $Δ_{L,S}(T)$ ($T_C^{local} = 48 ÷50$\,K) have been measured in the range from 4.2 to 50\,K. The $Δ_{L,S}(T)$ dependences were found to deviate from the BCS-like function; this suggests an importance of the $k$-space (internal) proximity effect between the two condensates.

Study of the Two-Gap Superconductivity in GdO(F)FeAs by ScS-Andreev Spectroscopy

Current-voltage characteristics and dynamic conductance of the superconductor - constriction - superconductor junctions in GdO(F)FeAs polycrystalline samples with critical temperatures Tc^local = 46 - 53 K were investigated. Two superconducting gaps, the large Delta_L = 10.5 +- 2 meV, and the small one Delta_S = 2.3 +- 0.4 meV were clearly observed at T = 4.2 K. The 2Delta_L/kTc^local = 5.5 +- 1 ratio gives support to the strong coupling mechanism which is responsible for the high Tc value. Temperature dependence of the large gap Delta_L(T) indicates the presence of intrinsic proximity effect (in k-space) between two superconducting condensates.

Observation of Multiple Superconducting Gaps in the Infrared Reflectivity Spectra of Ba(Fe0.9Co0.1)2As2

The results of infrared reflectivity measurements for the iron-based high-temperature superconductor Ba(Fe0.9Co0.1)2As2 are reported. The reflectivity is found to be close to unity at frequencies w lower than 2Delta/h (2Delta is the superconducting gap and h is Planck's constant). This is evidence for the s+/- or s+/+ symmetry of the superconducting order parameter in the studied compound. The infrared reflectivity spectra of Ba(Fe0.9Co0.1)2As2 manifest opening of several superconducting gaps at temperatures lower than critical Tc.

Thermodynamic magnetization of two-dimensional electron gas measured over wide range of densities

We report measurements of dm/dn in Si MOSFET, where m is the magnetization of the two-dimensional electron gas and n is its density. We extended the density range of measurements from well in the metallic to deep in the insulating region. The paper discusses in detail the conditions under which this extension is justified, as well as the corrections one should make to extract dm/dn properly. At low temperatures, dm/dn was found to be strongly nonlinear already in weak magnetic fields, on a scale much smaller than the characteristic scales, expected for interacting two-dimensional electron gas. Surprisingly, this nonlinear behavior exists both in the dielectric, and in the metallic region. These observations, we believe, provide evidence for strong coupling of the itinerant and localized electrons in Si-MOSFET.

Observation of Multi-Gap Superconductivity in GdO(F)FeAs by Andreev Spectroscopy

We have studied current-voltage characteristics of Andreev contacts in polycrystalline GdO$_{0.88}$F$_{0.12}$FeAs samples with bulk critical temperature ${T_c}$ = (52.5 \pm 1)K using break-junction technique. The data obtained cannot be described within the single-gap approach and suggests the existence of a multi-gap superconductivity in this compound. The large and small superconducting gap values estimated at T = 4.2K are ΔL = 10.5 \pm 2 meV and ΔS = 2.3 \pm 0.4 meV, respectively.

Anisotropy of the Spin Density Wave Onset for (TMTSF)_2PF_6 in Magnetic Field

In order to study the spin density wave transition temperature (T_SDW) in (TMTSF)_2PF_6 as a function of magnetic field, we measured the magnetoresistance R_zz in fields up to 19 T. Measurements were performed for three field orientations B||a, b' and c* at ambient pressure and at P = 5 kbar, that is nearly the critical pressure. For B||c* orientation we observed quadratic field dependence of T_SDW in agreement with theory and with previous experiments. For B||b' and B||a orientations we have found no shift in T_SDW within 0.05 K, both at P=0 and P=5 kbar. This result is also consistent with theoretical predictions.

Thermodynamic magnetization of a strongly interacting two-dimensional system

We report thermodynamic magnetization measurements of a 2-dimensional electron gas for several high mobility Si-MOSFETs. The low-temperature magnetization is shown to be strongly sub-linear function of the magnetic field. The susceptibility determined from the zero-field slope diverges as 1/T^α, with α=2.2-2.6 even at high electron densities, in apparent contradiction with the Fermi-liquid picture.

Magnetic and Superconducting Properties of FeAs-based High-Tc Superconductors with Gd

We report on successful synthesis under high pressure of a series of polycrystalline GdFeAs O_{1-x}F_x high-Tc superconductors with different oxygen deficiency x=0.12 - 0.16 and also with no fluorine. We have found that the high-pressure synthesis technique is crucial for obtaining almost single-phase superconducting materials: by synthesizing the same compounds with no pressure in ampoules we obtained non-superconducting materials with an admixture of incidental phases. Critical temperature for all the materials was in the range 40 to 53K. The temperature derivative of the critical field dHc2/dT is remarkably high, indicating potentially high value of the second critical field Hc2 ~ 130T.

Non-monotonic magnetoresistance of two-dimensional electron systems in the ballistic regime

We report experimental observations of a novel magnetoresistance (MR) behavior of two-dimensional electron systems in perpendicular magnetic field in the ballistic regime, for k_BTτ/\hbar>1. The MR grows with field and exhibits a maximum at fields B>1/μ, where μis the electron mobility. As temperature increases the magnitude of the maximum grows and its position moves to higher fields. This effect is universal: it is observed in various Si- and GaAs- based two-dimensional electron systems. We compared our data with recent theory based on the Kohn anomaly modification in magnetic field, and found qualitative similarities and discrepancies.

Interaction Effects in Conductivity of a Two-Valley Electron System in High-Mobility Si Inversion Layers

We have measured the conductivity of high-mobility (001) Si metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFETs) over wide ranges of electron densities n=(1.8-15)x10^11cm^2, temperatures T=30mK-4.2K, and in-plane magnetic fields B=0-5T. The experimental data have been analyzed using the theory of interaction effects in the conductivity of disordered 2D systems. The parameters essential for comparison with the theory, such as the intervalley scattering time and valley splitting, have been measured or evaluated in independent experiments. The observed behavior of the conductivity, including its quasi-linear increase with decreasing T down to ~0.4K and its downturn at lower temperatures, is in agreement with the theory. The values of the Fermi- liquid parameter obtained from the comparison agree with the corresponding values extracted from the analysis of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations based on the theory of magnetooscillations in interacting 2D systems.
