Veiling of Photosphere Lines in the Spectra of UX ORI Stars at Deep Light Minima. I. The Star RR Tau

The spectra of RR Tau star, which belongs to the family of young irregular variable UX Ori type stars, in its different brightness states have been studied using a comparative analysis. Selected spectra of the star that are obtained with the Nordic Optical Telescope at various times when its brightness ranged from $10.6^m$ to $13.9^m$ have been presented. The veiling of spectral lines at brightness minima by circumstellar emission has been considered, and its origin has been discussed.

Observations of UX Ori in deep minima with the Nordic Optical Telescope. I. Analysis of spectral lines

UX Orionis stars are the most active young stars; they undergo sporadic fadings of 2 - 4 magnitudes in the V-band, due to variable circumstellar extinction caused by a nearly edge-on star-disc system. The long-lasting monitoring of a number of stars of this type with the Nordic Optical Telescope from 2019 to 2024 has given a rich collection of material of high-resolution (R ~ 25000) spectra obtained during different brightness states of the stars. In this paper, we present the results of observations for UX Ori itself. Until now only one spectrum of high resolution had been obtained for this star during brightness minimum, making it difficult to do a comprehensive analysis. Our aim is to analyse how different spectral lines change during such irregular fading events, when the star is going in and out of eclipses, obscured by dust along the line of sight. For this purpose we provide a comparative analysis of the profiles and equivalent widths of the spectral lines belonging to the different atoms and ions. In addition we compare the results for UX Ori with those made for another target in our sample: RR Tau. Common features of variability are revealed: 1) a strengthening of the H-alpha line relatively to the continuum during eclipses; 2) the appearance of additional emission on the frequencies of photospheric lines (e.g. Fe II, Ca II, Si II). The different behaviour of the spectral lines during fading found for UX Ori and RR Tau may be caused by two effects: a different contribution of the scattered light to the stellar flux during eclipses or a less intense disc wind of UX Ori.

Modelling UX Ori Star Eclipses based on Spectral Observations with the Nordic Optical Telescope. I. RR Tau

Based on observations obtained with the Nordic Optical Telescope we investigate the spectral variability of the Herbig Ae star RR Tau. This star belongs to the UX Ori family, characterized by very deep fadings caused by the screening of the star with opaque fragments (clouds) of the protoplanetary discs. At the moments of such minima one observes strong spectral variability due to the fact that the dust cloud occults, for an observer, not only the star but also a part of the region where the emission spectrum originates. We calculated a series of obscuration models to interpret the observed variability of the H-alpha line parameters. We consider two main obscuration scenarios: (1) the dust screen rises vertically above the circumstellar disc, and (2) the screen intersects the line-of-sight moving azimuthally with the disc. In both cases the model of the emission region consists of a compact magnetosphere and a magneto-centrifugal disc wind. Comparison with observations shows that the first scenario explains well the variability of the radiation flux, the equivalent width, as well as the asymmetry of the H-alpha line during eclipses, while the second scenario explains them only partly. This permits us to suggest that in the case of RR Tau, the main causes of the eclipses are either a structured disc wind, or the charged dust lifted along the field lines of the poloidal component of the magnetic field of the circumstellar disc.

Photometric activity of CQ Tau on the time interval of 125 years

The star CQ Tau belongs to the family of UX Ori type stars. It has very complex photometric behavior and complex structure of the circumstellar environment. In our paper we constructed the historical 125 years light curve of this star basing on the published photometric observations. It follows that besides a random component characteristic of UX Ori type stars, the large amplitude periodic component with the 10 year period is also present. Its existence was suspected earlier in [11]. New observations confirm its reality. It points to an existence of the second component close to the star. The density waves and matter flows caused by the companion motion lead to periodic changes in the circumstellar extinction and brightness of the star. This result is discussed in context of the recent observations of CQ Tau with high angular resolution.

Magnetospheric accretion at the late phases of the Pre-Main-Sequence evolution. The case of RZ Psc

It has been shown that during the outburst of accretion activity observed in UX Ori type star RZ Psc in 2013, the accretion rate increased approximately by an order of magnitude. This means that the accretion process at the late stages of the Pre-Main Sequence evolution is very unstable. Using the spectra obtained during this episode we have studied the magnetospheric emission in the H$α$ line. Models of magnetospheric accretion are calculated to obtain the parameters of the magnetosphere from this observation. In present work we have taken into account the influence of the recombination delay effect during gas motion in the stellar magnetosphere. The accounting for this effect and the presence of the magnetospheric absorption in the IR CaII triplet lines and its absence in D Na I resonance lines allowed us to place a lower limit on the temperature in the magnetosphere at $\approx$ 10000 K, which significantly improved precision of our estimate of accretion rate. According to the best fit model the logarithm of accretion rate is $\log\dot{M} = -10.1\pm0.3$ ($\dot{M} \approx 7\times10^{-11}$ M$_\odot$yr$^{-1}$) and the inclination angle of RZ Psc is $43\pm 3^\circ$. It is less than the inclination, typical for the UX Ori stars (about 70$^\circ$), that explains the weak photometric variability of this star. Using the obtained accretion rate and magnetosphere radius we estimate the strength of the dipole component of the magnetic field of RZ Psc $\approx$ 0.1 kGs.

UX Ori Stars Eclipses by Large-Scale Disc Perturbations

We simulate the polarized radiative transfer in vicinities of the UX Ori type stars during their minima. Our model of an eclipse by an extended disc perturbation generalizes the compact gas-dust cloud eclipse model. We apply the radiative transfer method based on enumeration using the directions grid to model the influence of the perturbation extensions along azimuth and radius on the eclipse depth and parameters of the linear polarization. We investigate eclipses both for the flared disc and for the disc with a puffing-up in the dust sublimation zone. The puffing-up is obtained by adding a disc wind to the model. Comparison with a compact cloud eclipse model reveals that the eclipse by a large-scale azimuthally extended perturbation may be significantly deeper and show a greater linear polarization degree. We also demonstrate that the perturbation extension together with the disc puffing-up can strongly affect the degree of polarization and colour index of the star during the eclipse. The position angle of the linear polarization may also change markedly during and after an eclipse by a large scale perturbation for the model with a puffed-up inner rim. Also, in this model, the maximum degree of the linear polarization can be achieved not at the brightness minimum but closer to the end of the eclipse. We discuss the modelling results in the context of the photopolarimetric observations of UX Ori stars.

Flares of accretion activity of the 20 Myr old UXOR RZ Psc

We discuss a revision of accretion activity and kinematics of the enigmatic isolated UX Ori type star RZ Psc. Previously, RZ Psc was known to possess only spectroscopic signatures of outflow in the low-excitation lines of alkali metals. The archival high-resolution spectra reveal a short-lived episode of magnetospheric accretion in the system observed via inverse P Cyg profiles at the H$α$ and CaII 8542 $\unicode{x212B}$ lines. The simultaneous presence of accretion and outflow signatures at CaII 8542 $\unicode{x212B}$ is suggestive of an accretion-driven origin of the RZ Psc wind. We argue that RZ Psc experiences matter ejection via the magnetic propeller mechanism but variable accretion episodes allow it to sometimes move in the magnetospheric accretion regime. The presence of the weak accretion in the system is also supported by the radiation of the hot accretion spot on the stellar surface observed spectroscopically at the deep photometric minimum of the star. The Galactic motion of RZ Psc calculated with new GAIA DR2 astrometric data suggests possible membership in Cas-Tau OB association with an age of $t=20^{+3}_{-5}$ Myr.

Accretion and outflow activity on the late phases of pre-main-sequence evolution. The case of RZ Piscium

RZ Psc is an isolated high-latitude post-T Tauri star that demonstrates a UX Ori-type photometric activity. The star shows very weak spectroscopic signatures of accretion, but at the same time possesses the unusual footprints of the wind in Na I D lines. In the present work we investigate new spectroscopic observations of RZ Psc obtained in 2014 during two observation runs. We found variable blueshifted absorption components (BACs) in lines of the other alcali metals, K I 7699 Å and Ca II IR triplet. We also confirmed the presence of a weak emission component in the H$α$ line, which allowed us to estimate the mass accretion rate on the star as $\dot{M}\leq$ $7 \cdot 10^{-12}$Msun yr$^{-1}$. We could not reveal any clear periodicity in the appearance of BACs in sodium lines. Nevertheless, the exact coincidence of the structure and velocities of the Na I D absorptions observed with the interval of about one year suggests that such a periodicity should exist.

AMBER/VLTI high spectral resolution observations of the Br$γ$ emitting region in HD 98922. A compact disc wind launched from the inner disc region

We analyse the main physical parameters and the circumstellar environment of the young Herbig Be star HD 98922. We present AMBER/VLTI high spectral resolution (R =12000) interferometric observations across the Br$γ$ line, accompanied by UVES high-resolution spectroscopy and SINFONI-AO assisted near-infrared integral field spectroscopic data. To interpret our observations, we develop a magneto-centrifugally driven disc-wind model. Our analysis of the UVES spectrum shows that HD 98922 is a young (~5x10^5 yr) Herbig Be star (SpT=B9V), located at a distance of 440(+60-50) pc, with a mass accretion rate of ~9+/-3x10^(-7) M_sun yr^(-1). SINFONI K-band AO-assisted imaging shows a spatially resolved circumstellar disc-like region (~140 AU in diameter) with asymmetric brightness distribution. Our AMBER/VLTI UT observations indicate that the Br$γ$ emitting region (radius ~0.31+/-0.04 AU) is smaller than the continuum emitting region (inner dust radius ~0.7+/-0.2 AU), showing significant non-zero V-shaped differential phases (i.e. non S-shaped, as expected for a rotating disc). The value of the continuum-corrected pure Br$γ$ line visibility at the longest baseline (89 m) is ~0.8+/-0.1, i.e. the Br$γ$ emitting region is partially resolved. Our modelling suggests that the observed Br$γ$ line-emitting region mainly originates from a disc wind with a half opening angle of 30deg, and with a mass-loss rate of ~2x10(-7) M_sun yr^(-1). The observed V-shaped differential phases are reliably reproduced by combining a simple asymmetric continuum disc model with our Br$γ$ disc-wind model. The Br$γ$ emission of HD 98922 can be modelled with a disc wind that is able to approximately reproduce all interferometric observations if we assume that the intensity distribution of the dust continuum disc is asymmetric.

Spectroscopy of ε Aurigae during the 2009-2011 eclipse

The results of the spectral observations of a unique eclipsing system ε Aurigae obtained during the recent eclipse are presented. We traced the spectral lines variations at different eclipse phases. The part of these changes is the result of the absorption of stellar radiation by the gas component of circumstellar (CS) disk around the secondary. The other part arises due to the obscuration of the stellar photosphere and the closest circumstellar area by the dusty CS disk. Comparison of our results with the previous one, obtained by Lambert & Sawyer during the 1982-1984 eclipse, indicates the good agreement, and argues in favor of stability of the secondary disk structure. On the base of the new observational data we provide a new mass estimation of the system components.

LBT/LUCIFER near-infrared spectroscopy of PV Cephei. An outbursting young stellar object with an asymmetric jet

We present a detailed spectroscopic investigation of the young eruptive star PV Cep, to improve our understanding of its nature and characterise its circumstellar environment after its last outburst in 2004. The analysis of our medium-resolution spectroscopy in the near-IR (0.9-2.35 um), collected in 2012 at the Large Binocular Telescope with the IR spectrograph LUCIFER, allows us to infer the main stellar parameters (visual extinction, accretion luminosity, mass accretion and ejection rates), and model the inner disc, jet, and wind. The NIR spectrum displays several strong emission lines associated with accretion/ejection activity and circumstellar environment. Our analysis shows that the brightness of PV Cep is fading, as well as the mass accretion rate (2x10^-7 Msun/yr^-1 in 2012 vs ~5x10^-6 Msun/yr^-1 in 2004), which is more than one order of magnitude lower than in the outburst phase. Among the several emission lines, only the [FeII] intensity increased after the outburst. The observed [FeII] emission delineates blue- and red-shifted lobes, both with high- and low-velocity components, which trace an asymmetric jet and wind, respectively. The observed emission in the jet has a dynamical age of ~8 years, indicating that it was produced during the last outburst. The mass ejection rate in both lobes is 1.5x10^-7 Msun/yr^-1, approximately matching the high accretion rate observed during and immediately after the outburst . The observed jet/outflow asymmetries are consistent with an inhomogeneous medium. Our modelling of the CO emission hints at a small-scale gaseous disc ring, extending from ~0.2-0.4 AU to ~3 AU from the source, with an inner temperature of ~3000 K. Our HI lines modelling indicates that most of the observed emission comes from an expanding disc wind at Te=10000 K. The line profiles are strongly affected by scattering, disc screening, and outflow self-absorption.

An active asteroid belt causing the UX Ori phenomenon in RZ Psc

We report the discovery of mid-infrared excess emission in the young object RZ Psc. The excess constitutes ~8% of its Lbol, and is well fit by a single 500K black-body implying a dust free region within 0.7AU for optically thick dust. The object displays dust obscuration events (UXOR behaviour) with a time-scale that suggests dusty material on orbits of 0.5AU. We also report a 12.4 year cyclical photometric variability which can be interpreted as due to perturbations in the dust distribution. The system is characterized by a high inclination, marginal extinction (during bright photometric states), a single temperature for the warm dust, and an age estimate which puts the star beyond the formation stage. We propose that the dust occultation events present a dynamical view of an active asteroid belt whose collisional products sporadically obscure the central star.

International observational campaigns of the last two eclipses in EE Cephei: 2003 and 2008/9

Two observational campaigns were carried out during the eclipses of EE Cep in 2003 and 2008/9 to verify whether the eclipsing body in the system is indeed a dark disk and to understand the observed changes in the depth and durations of the eclipses. Multicolour photometric data and spectroscopic observations at both low and high resolution were collected. We numerically modelled the variations in brightness and colour during the eclipses. We tested models with different disk structure. We considered the possibility of disk precession. The complete set of observational data collected during the last three eclipses are made available to the astronomical community. Two blue maxima in the colour indices were detected during these two eclipses, one before and one after the photometric minimum. The first (stronger) blue maximum is simultaneous with a "bump" that is very clear in all the UBVRI light curves. Variations in the spectral line profiles seem to be recurrent during each cycle. NaI lines always show at least three absorption components during the eclipse minimum and strong absorption is superimposed on the H_alpha emission. These observations confirm that the eclipsing object in EE Cep system is indeed a dark, dusty disk around a low luminosity object. The primary appears to be a rapidly rotating Be star that is strongly darkened at the equator and brightened at the poles. Some of the conclusions of this work require verification in future studies: (i) a complex, possibly multi-ring structure of the disk in EE Cep; (ii) our explanation of the "bump" observed during the last two eclipses in terms of the different times of obscuration of the hot polar regions of the Be star by the disk; and (iii) our suggested period of the disk precession (~11-12 P_orb) and predicted depth of about 2 mag the forthcoming eclipse in 2014.

Spectral line profiles changed by dust scattering in heavily obscured young stellar objects

It is known that scattering of radiation by circumstellar dust can strongly change the line profiles in stellar spectra. This hampers the analysis of spectral lines originating in the emitting regions of heavily obscured young stars. To calculate the line profile of the scattered radiation, we suggest to use the approximation of remote scattering particles. This approximation assumes that the scattering dust grains are at a distance from the star that is much larger than the characteristic size of the emitting region. Using this method, we calculated the line profiles of several simple models. They show the H alpha line profiles of Herbig AeBe stars in the presence and absence of motionless or moving dust.

Modulation of Circumstellar Extinction in a Young Binary System with a Low-Mass Companion in a Noncoplanar Orbit

The cyclic activity model of a young star with the low-mass secondary component (q = M2/M1 <= 0.1) accreting a matter from circumbinary disk is considered. It is assumed that the orbit is circular and the disk and orbital planes are non-coplanar. Sets of hydrodynamics models of such a system have been calculated by the SPH method and then the variations of the circumstellar extinction and phase light curves were determined. The calculations showed that depending on the model parameters and orientation of the system in regards to an observer the different in shape and amplitude light curves can be observed. An important property of the considered models is also the dependence of the mass accretion rate onto the components on the phase of the orbital period. The results of the calculation can be used for analysis of the cyclic activity of UX Ori stars and young stars with the long-lasting eclipses.

The evolutionary status of the UX Orionis star RZ Piscium

The star RZ Psc is one of the most enigmatic members of the UX Ori star family. It shows all properties that are typical for these stars (the light variability, high linear polarization in deep minima, the blueing effect) except for one: it lacks any signatures of youth. With the Li I line, as a rough estimate for the stellar age, we show that the "lithium" age of RZ Psc lies between the age of stars in the Pleiades (approximately 70 Myr) and the Orion (approximately 10 Myr) clusters. We also roughly estimated the age of RZ Psc based on the proper motion of the star using the Tycho-2 catalog. We found that the star has escaped from its assumed birthplace near to the Galactic plane about 30-40 Myr ago. We conclude that RZ Psc is a post-UXOr star, and its sporadic eclipses are caused by material from the debris disk.

VLTI/AMBER spectro-interferometry of the Herbig Be star MWC 297 with spectral resolution 12 000

Circumstellar disks and outflows play a fundamental role in star formation. Infrared spectro-interferometry allows the inner accretion-ejection region to be resolved. We measured interferometric visibilities, wavelength-differential phases, and closure phases of MWC 297 with a spectral resolution of 12000. To interpret our MWC 297 observations, we employed disk-wind models. The measured continuum visibilities confirm previous results that the continuum-emitting region of MWC 297 is remarkably compact. We derive a continuum ring-fit radius of ~2.2 mas (~0.56 AU at a distance of 250 pc), which is ~5.4 times smaller than the 3 AU dust sublimation radius expected for silicate grains (in the absence of radiation-shielding material). The strongly wavelength-dependent and asymmetric Br gamma-emitting region is more extended (~2.7 times) than the continuum-emitting region. At the center of the Br gamma line, we derive a Gaussian fit radius of ~6.3 mas HWHM (~1.6 AU). To interpret the observations, we employ a magneto-centrifugally driven disk-wind model consisting of an accretion disk, which emits the observed continuum radiation, and a disk wind, which emits the Br gamma line. The calculated wavelength-dependent model intensity distributions and Br gamma line profiles are compared with the observations (i.e., K-band spectrum, visibilities, differential phases, and closure phases). The closest fitting model predicts a continuum-emitting disk with an inner radius of ~0.3 AU and a disk wind ejection region with an inner radius of ~0.5 AU (~17.5 stellar radii). We obtain a disk-wind half-opening angle (the angle between the rotation axis and the innermost streamline of the disk wind) of ~80 degrees, which is larger than in T Tau models, and a disk inclination angle of ~20 degrees (i.e., almost pole-on).

Hydrodynamic Processes in Young Binary Systems as a Source of Cyclic Variations of Circumstellar Extinction

Hydrodynamic models of a young binary system accreting matter from the remnants of a protostellar cloud have been calculated by the SPH method. It is shown that periodic variations in column density in projection onto the primary component take place at low inclinations of the binary plane to the line of sight. They can result in periodic extinction variations. Three periodic components can exist in general case. The first component has a period equal to the orbital one and is attributable to the streams of matter penetrating into the inner regions of the binary. The second component has a period that is a factor of 5-8 longer than the orbital one and is related to the density waves generated in a circumbinary (CB) disk. The third, longest period is attributable to the precession of the inner asymmetric region of CB disk. The relationship between the amplitudes of these cycles depends on the model parameters as well as on the inclination and orientation of the binary in space. We show that at a dust-to-gas ratio of 1:100 and and a mass extinction coefficient of 250 cm$^2$ g$^{-1}$, the amplitude of the brightness variations of the primary component in the V-band can reach $1^m$ at a mass accretion rate onto the binary components of $10^{-8} M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ and a $10^{\rm o}$ inclination of the binary plane to the line of sight. We discuss possible applications of the model to pre-main-sequence stars.
