Quest for the golden ratio universality class

Using mode coupling theory the conditions for all allowed dynamical universality classes for the conserved modes in one-dimensional driven systems are presented in closed form as a function of the stationary currents and their derivatives. With a view on the search for the golden ratio universality class the existence of some families of microscopic models is ruled out a priori by using an Onsager-type macroscopic current symmetry. At equal mean densities of the conserved quantities the golden modes can only appear if the currents are antisymmetric under interchange of the conserved densities and if these densities are correlated, but not in the symmetric case where at equal densities one mode is always diffusive and the second may be either Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ), modified KPZ, 3/2-L\'evy, or also diffusive. We also show that the predictions of mode coupling theory for a noisy chain of harmonic oscillators are exact.

Matrix product ansatz for non-equilibrium quantum steady states

We present a general construction of matrix product states for stationary density matrices of one-dimensional quantum spin systems kept out of equilibrium through boundary Lindblad dynamics. As an application we review the isotropic Heisenberg quantum spin chain which is closely related to the generator of the simple symmetric exclusion process. Exact and heuristic results as well as numerical evidence suggest a local quantum equilibrium and long-range correlations reminiscent of similar large-scale properties in classical stochastic interacting particle systems that can be understood in terms of fluctuating hydrodynamics.

Universality classes in two-component driven diffusive systems

We study time-dependent density fluctuations in the stationary state of driven diffusive systems with two conserved densities $\rho_\lambda$. Using Monte-Carlo simulations of two coupled single-lane asymmetric simple exclusion processes we present numerical evidence for universality classes with dynamical exponents $z=(1+\sqrt{5})/2$ and $z=3/2$ (but different from the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class), which have not been reported yet for driven diffusive systems. The numerical asymmetry of the dynamical structure functions converges slowly for some of the non-KPZ superdiffusive modes for which mode coupling theory predicts maximally asymmetric $z$-stable L\'evy scaling functions. We show that all universality classes predicted by mode coupling theory for two conservation laws are generic: They occur in two-component systems with nonlinearities in the associated currents already of the minimal order $\rho_\lambda^2\rho_\mu$. The macroscopic stationary current-density relation and the compressibility matrix determine completely all permissible universality classes through the mode coupling coefficients which we compute explicitly for general two-component systems.

Driven isotropic Heisenberg spin chain with arbitrary boundary twisting angle: exact results

We consider an open isotropic Heisenberg quantum spin chain, coupled at the ends to boundary reservoirs polarized in different directions, which sets up a twisting gradient across the chain. Using a matrix product ansatz, we calculate the exact magnetization profiles and magnetization currents in the nonequilibrium steady steady state of a chain with N sites. The magnetization profiles are harmonic functions with a frequency proportional to the twisting angle {\theta}. The currents of the magnetization components lying in the twisting plane and in the orthogonal direction behave qualitatively differently: In-plane steady state currents scale as 1/N^2 for fixed and sufficiently large boundary coupling, and vanish as the coupling increases, while the transversal current increases with the coupling and saturates to 2{\theta}/N.

Exact matrix product solution for the boundary-driven Lindblad $XXZ$-chain

We demonstrate that the exact non-equilibrium steady state of the one-dimensional Heisenberg XXZ spin chain driven by boundary Lindblad operators can be constructed explicitly with a matrix product ansatz for the non-equilibrium density matrix where the matrices satisfy a {\it quadratic algebra}. This algebra turns out to be related to the quantum algebra $U_q[SU(2)]$. Coherent state techniques are introduced for the exact solution of the isotropic Heisenberg chain with and without quantum boundary fields and Lindblad terms that correspond to two different completely polarized boundary states. We show that this boundary twist leads to non-vanishing stationary currents of all spin components. Our results suggest that the matrix product ansatz can be extended to more general quantum systems kept far from equilibrium by Lindblad boundary terms.

Boundary-driven phase transitions in open two-species driven systems with an umbilic point

Different phases in open driven systems are governed by either shocks or rarefaction waves. A presence of an isolated umbilic point in bidirectional systems of interacting particles stabilizes an unusual large scale excitation, an umbilic shock (U-shock). We show that in open systems the U-shock governs a large portion of phase space, and drives a new discontinuous transition between the two rarefaction-controlled phases. This is in contrast with strictly hyperbolic case where such a transition is always continuous. Also, we describe another robust phase which takes place of the phase governed by the U-shock, if the umbilic point is not isolated.

Alternation of sign of magnetization current in driven XXZ chains with twisted XY boundary gradients

We investigate an open XXZ spin 1/2 chain driven out of equilibrium by coupling with boundary reservoirs targeting different spin orientations in XY plane. Symmetries of the model are revealed which appear to be different for spin chains of odd and even sizes. As a result, spin current is found to alternate with chain length, ruling out the possibility of ballistic transport. Heat transport is switched off completely by virtue of another global symmetry. Further, we investigate the model numerically and analytically. At strong coupling, we find exact nonequilibrium steady state using a perturbation theory. The state is determined by solving secular conditions which guarantee self-consistency of the perturbative expansion. We find nontrivial dependence of the magnetization current on the spin chain anisotropy $\Delta$ in the critical region $|\Delta|<1$, and a phenomenon of tripling of the twisting angle along the chain for narrow lacunes of $\Delta$.

Reduced density matrix and entanglement entropy of permutationally invariant quantum many-body systems

In this paper we discuss the properties of the reduced density matrix of quantum many body systems with permutational symmetry and present basic quantification of the entanglement in terms of the von Neumann (VNE), Renyi and Tsallis entropies. In particular, we show, on the specific example of the spin $1/2$ Heisenberg model, how the RDM acquires a block diagonal form with respect to the quantum number $k$ fixing the polarization in the subsystem conservation of $S_{z}$ and with respect to the irreducible representations of the $\mathbf{S_{n}}$ group. Analytical expression for the RDM elements and for the RDM spectrum are derived for states of arbitrary permutational symmetry and for arbitrary polarizations. The temperature dependence and scaling of the VNE across a finite temperature phase transition is discussed and the RDM moments and the R\'{e}nyi and Tsallis entropies calculated both for symmetric ground states of the Heisenberg chain and for maximally mixed states.

Transition probabilities and dynamic structure factor in the ASEP conditioned on strong flux

We consider the asymmetric simple exclusion processes (ASEP) on a ring constrained to produce an atypically large flux, or an extreme activity. Using quantum free fermion techniques we find the time-dependent conditional transition probabilities and the exact dynamical structure factor under such conditioned dynamics. In the thermodynamic limit we obtain the explicit scaling form. This gives a direct proof that the dynamical exponent in the extreme current regime is $z=1$ rather than the KPZ exponent $z=3/2$ which characterizes the ASEP in the regime of typical currents. Some of our results extend to the activity in the partially asymmetric simple exclusion process, including the symmetric case.

Shape and scaling of moving step bunches

We study step bunching under conditions of attachment/detachment limited kinetics in the presence of a deposition or sublimation flux, which leads to bunch motion. Analysis of the discrete step dynamics reveals that the bunch velocity is inversely proportional to the bunch size for general step-step interactions. The shape of steadily moving bunches is studied within a continuum theory, and analytic expressions for the bunch profile are derived. Scaling laws obtained previously for non-moving bunches are recovered asymptotically, but singularities of the static theory are removed and strong corrections to scaling are found. The size of the largest terrace between two bunches is identified as a central scaling parameter. Our theory applies to a large class of bunching instabilities, including sublimation with attachment asymmetry and surface electromigration in the presence of sublimation or growth.

Base sequence dependent sliding of proteins on DNA

The possibility that the sliding motion of proteins on DNA is influenced by the base sequence through a base pair reading interaction, is considered. Referring to the case of the T7 RNA-polymerase, we show that the protein should follow a noise-influenced sequence-dependent motion which deviate from the standard random walk usually assumed. The general validity and the implications of the results are discussed.

Hydrodynamic limit of multi-chain driven diffusive models

A new class of models, generalizing Asymmetric Exclusion Process for many parallel interacting channels, is proposed. We couple the models with boundary reservoirs, study boundary-driven phase transitions and show that usually taken hydrodynamic description fails. The adequate hydrodynamic limit is then derived. We support our findings with Monte-Carlo simulations of the original stochastic system.

Infinite reflections of shock fronts in driven diffusive systems with two species

Interaction of a domain wall with boundaries of a system is studied for a class of stochastic driven particle models. Reflection maps are introduced for the description of this process. We show that, generically, a domain wall reflects infinitely many times from the boundaries before a stationary state can be reached. This is in an evident contrast with one-species models where the stationary density is attained after just one reflection.

Localization of shocks in driven diffusive systems without particle number conservation

We study the formation of localized shocks in one-dimensional driven diffusive systems with spacially homogeneous creation and annihilation of particles (Langmuir kinetics). We show how to obtain hydrodynamic equations which describe the density profile in systems with uncorrelated steady state as well as in those exhibiting correlations. As a special example of the latter case the Katz-Lebowitz-Spohn model is considered. The existence of a localized double density shock is demonstrated for the first time in one-dimensional driven diffusive systems. This corresponds to phase separation into regimes of three distinct densities, separated by localized domain walls. Our analytical approach is supported by Monte-Carlo simulations.

A sufficient criterion for integrability of stochastic many-body dynamics and quantum spin chains

We propose a dynamical matrix product ansatz describing the stochastic dynamics of two species of particles with excluded-volume interaction and the quantum mechanics of the associated quantum spin chains respectively. Analyzing consistency of the time-dependent algebra which is obtained from the action of the corresponding Markov generator, we obtain sufficient conditions on the hopping rates for identifing the integrable models. From the dynamical algebra we construct the quadratic algebra of Zamolodchikov type, associativity of which is a Yang Baxter equation. The Bethe ansatz equations for the spectra are obtained directly from the dynamical matrix product ansatz.

Boundary-induced phase transitions in traffic flow

Boundary-induced phase transitions are one of the surprising phenomena appearing in nonequilibrium systems. These transitions have been found in driven systems, especially the asymmetric simple exclusion process. However, so far no direct observations of this phenomenon in real systems exists. Here we present evidence for the appearance of such a nonequilibrium phase transition in traffic flow occurring on highways in the vicinity of on- and off-ramps. Measurements on a German motorway close to Cologne show a first-order nonequilibrium phase transition between a free-flow phase and a congested phase. It is induced by the interplay of density waves (caused by an on-ramp) and a shock wave moving on the motorway. The full phase diagram, including the effect of off-ramps, is explored using computer simulations and suggests means to optimize the capacity of a traffic network.

Two-way traffic flow: exactly solvable model of traffic jam

We study completely asymmetric 2-channel exclusion processes in 1 dimension. It describes a two-way traffic flow with cars moving in opposite directions. The interchannel interaction makes cars slow down in the vicinity of approaching cars in other lane. Particularly, we consider in detail the system with a finite density of cars on one lane and a single car on the other one. When the interchannel interaction reaches a critical value, traffic jam occurs, which turns out to be of first order phase transition. We derive exact expressions for the average velocities, the current, the density profile and the $k$- point density correlation functions. We also obtain the exact probability of two cars in one lane being distance $R$ apart, provided there is a finite density of cars on the other lane, and show the two cars form a weakly bound state in the jammed phase.
