Conformal Universe as false vacuum decay

We point out that the (pseudo-)conformal Universe scenario may be realized as decay of conformally invariant, metastable vacuum, which proceeds via spontaneous nucleation and subsequent growth of a bubble of a putative new phase. We study perturbations about the bubble and show that their leading late-time properties coincide with those inherent in the original models with homogeneously rolling backgrounds. In particular, the perturbations of a spectator dimension-zero field have flat power spectrum.

On holography for (pseudo-)conformal cosmology

We propose a holographic dual for (pseudo-)conformal cosmological scenario, with a scalar field that forms a moving domain wall in adS_5. The domain wall separates two vacua with unequal energy densities. Unlike in the existing construction, the 5d solution is regular in the relevant space-time domain.

Galileon bounce after ekpyrotic contraction

We consider a simple cosmological model that includes a long ekpyrotic contraction stage and smooth bounce after it. Ekpyrotic behavior is due to a scalar field with a negative exponential potential, whereas the Galileon field produces bounce. We give an analytical picture of how the bounce occurs within the weak gravity regime, and then perform numerical analysis to extend our results to a non-perturbative regime.

Cosmological phase transition, baryon asymmetry and dark matter Q-balls

We consider a mechanism of dark matter production in the course of first order phase transition. We assume that there is an asymmetry between X- and anti-X-particles of dark sector. In particular, it may be related to the baryon asymmetry. We also assume that the phase transition is so strongly first order, that X-particles do not permeate into the new phase. In this case, as the bubbles of old phase collapse, X-particles are packed into Q-balls with huge mass defect. These Q-balls compose the present dark matter. We find that the required present dark matter density is obtained for the energy scale of the theory in the ballpark of 1-10 TeV. As an example we consider a theory with effective potential of one-loop motivated form.

Non-Gaussianity of scalar perturbations generated by conformal mechanisms

We consider theories which explain the flatness of the power spectrum of scalar perturbations in the Universe by conformal invariance, such as conformal rolling model and Galilean Genesis. We show that to the leading {\it non-linear} order, perturbations in all models from this class behave in one and the same way, at least if the energy density of the relevant fields is small compared to the total energy density (spectator approximation). We then turn to the intrinsic non-Gaussianities in these models (as opposed to non-Gaussianities that may be generated during subsequent evolution). The intrinsic bispectrum vanishes, so we perform the complete calculation of the trispectrum and compare it with the trispecta of local forms in various limits. The most peculiar feature of our trispectrum is a (fairly mild) singularity in the limit where two momenta are equal in absolute value and opposite in direction (folded limit). Generically, the intrinsic non-Gaussianity can be of detectable size.

Dynamical vs spectator models of (pseudo-)conformal Universe

We discuss two versions of the conformal scenario for generating scalar cosmological perturbations: a spectator version with a scalar field conformally coupled to gravity and carrying negligible energy density, and a dynamical version with a scalar field minimally coupled to gravity and dominating the cosmological evolution. By making use of the Newtonian gauge, we show that (i) no UV strong coupling scale is generated below $M_{Pl}$ due to mixing with metric perturbations in the dynamical scenario, and (ii) the dynamical and spectator models yield identical results to the leading non-linear order. We argue that these results, which include potentially observable effects like statistical anisotropy and non-Gaussianity, are characteristic of the entire class of conformal models. As an example, we reproduce, within the dynamical scenario and working in comoving gauge, our earlier result on the statistical anisotropy, which was originally obtained within the spectator approach.

Scalar perturbations in conformal rolling scenario with intermediate stage

Scalar cosmological perturbations with nearly flat power spectrum may originate from perturbations of the phase of a scalar field conformally coupled to gravity and rolling down negative quartic potential. We consider a version of this scenario whose specific property is a long intermediate stage between the end of conformal rolling and horizon exit of the phase perturbations. Such a stage is natural, e.g., in cosmologies with ekpyrosis or genesis. Its existence results in small negative scalar tilt, statistical anisotropy of all even multipoles starting from quardupole of general structure (in contrast to the usually discussed single quadrupole of special type) and non-Gaussianity of a peculiar form.

Properties of scalar perturbations generated by conformal scalar field

Primordial scalar perturbations may be generated when complex conformal scalar field rolls down its negative quartic potential. We begin with the discussion of peculiar infrared properties of this scenario. We then consider the statistical anisotropy inherent in the model. Finally, we discuss the non-Gaussianity of scalar perturbations. Because of symmetries, the bispectrum vanishes identically. We present a general expression for the trispectrum and give its explicit form in the folded limit.

Cosmological density perturbations from conformal scalar field: infrared properties and statistical anisotropy

We consider a scenario in which primordial scalar perturbations are generated when complex conformal scalar field rolls down its negative quartic potential. Initially, these are the perturbations of the phase of this field; they are converted into the adiabatic perturbations at a later stage. A potentially dangerous feature of this scenario is the existence of perturbations in the radial field direction, which have red power spectrum. We show, however, that to the linear order in the small parameter - the quartic self-coupling - the infrared effects are completely harmless, as they can be absorbed into field redefinition. We then evaluate the statistical anisotropy inherent in the model due to the existence of the long-ranged radial perturbations. To the linear order in the quartic self-coupling the statistical anisotropy is free of the infrared effects. The latter show up at the quadratic order in the self-coupling and result in the mild (logarithmic) enhancement of the corresponding contribution to the statistical anisotropy. The resulting statistical anisotropy is a combination of a larger term which, however, decays as momentum increases, and a smaller term which is independent of momentum.

Q-balls with scalar charges

We consider Friedberg-Lee-Sirlin Q-balls in a (3+1)-dimensional model with vanishing scalar potential of one of the fields. The Q-ball is stabilized by the gradient energy of this field and carries scalar charge, over and beyond the global charge. The latter property is inherent also in a model with the scalar potential that does not vanish in some finite field region near the origin.

Scalar tilt from broken conformal invariance

Within recently proposed scenario which explains flatness of the spectrum of scalar cosmological perturbations by a combination of conformal and global symmetries, we discuss the effect of weak breaking of conformal invariance. We find that the scalar power spectrum obtains a small tilt which depends on both the strength of conformal symmetry breaking and the law of evolution of the scale factor.

Massive Spin-2 fields of Geometric Origin in Curved Spacetimes

We study the consistency of a model which includes torsion as well as the metric as dynamical fields and has massive spin-2 particle in its spectrum. The massive spin-2 mode resides in the torsion, rather than in the metric. It is known that this model is tachyon- and ghost-free in Minkowski background. We show that this property remains valid and no other pathologies emerge in de Sitter and anti-de Sitter backgrounds, with some of our results extending to arbirary Einstein space backgrounds. This suggests that the model is consistent, at least at the classical level, unlike, e.g., the Fierz--Pauli theory.

Infrared Modified Gravity with Dynamical Torsion

We continue the recent study of the possibility of constructing a consistent infrared modification of gravity by treating the vierbein and connection as independent dynamical fields. We present the generalized Fierz--Pauli equation that governs the propagation of a massive spin-2 mode in a model of this sort in the backgrounds of arbitrary torsionless Einstein manifolds. We show explicitly that the number of propagating degrees of freedom in these backgrounds remains the same as in flat space-time. This generalizes the recent result that the Boulware--Deser phenomenon does not occur in de Sitter and anti-de Sitter backgrounds. We find that, at least for weakly curved backgrounds, there are no ghosts in the model. We also briefly discuss the interaction of sources in flat background.

Is gravitino still a warm dark matter candidate?

We make use of the phase space density approach to discuss gravitino as a warm dark matter candidate. Barring fine tuning between the reheat temperature in the Universe and superparticle masses, we find that \emph{warm} gravitinos have both appropriate total mass density, Omega_{\tilde G} = Ω_{DM} \simeq 0.2, and suitable primordial phase space density at low momenta provided that their mass is in the range 1 keV \lesssim \mg \lesssim 15 keV, the reheat temperature in the Universe is low, T_R \lesssim 10 TeV, and masses of some of the superparticles are sufficiently small, M \lesssim 350 GeV. The latter property implies that the gravitino warm dark matter scenario will be either ruled out or supported by the LHC experiments.

Constraining sterile neutrino dark matter by phase-space density observations

We apply phase-space density considerations to obtain lower bounds on the mass of sterile neutrino as dark matter candidate. The bounds are different for non-resonant production, resonant production in the presence of lepton asymmetry and production in decays of heavier particles. In the former case our bound is comparable to, but independent of the Lyman-alpha bound, and together with X-ray upper limit it disfavors non-resonantly produced sterile neutrino dark matter. An interesting feature of the latter case is that warm dark matter may be composed of heavy particles.

Superluminality in the Fierz--Pauli massive gravity

We study the propagation of helicity-1 gravitons in the Fierz--Pauli massive gravity in nearly Minkowski backgrounds. We show that, generically, there exist backgrounds consistent with field equations, in which the propagation is superluminal. The relevant distances are much longer than the ultraviolet cutoff length inherent in the Fierz--Pauli gravity, so superluminality occurs within the domain of validity of the effective low energy theory. There remains a possibility that one may get rid of this property by imposing fine tuning relations between the coefficients in the non-linear generalization of the Fierz--Pauli mass term, order by order in non-linearity; however, these relations are not protected by any obvious symmetry. Thus, among others, superluminality is a problematic property to worry about when attempting to construct infrared modifications of General Relativity.

Phantom dark energy with tachyonic instability: metric perturbations

We study the behavior of metric perturbations in a recently proposed model of phantom dark energy with tachyonic instability at long wavelengths. We find that metric perturbations exponentially grow in time, starting from very small values determined by vacuum fluctuations, and may become sizeable at late times. This property may be of interest for phenomenology.

Towards Z_2-protected gauge--Higgs unification

In theories with flux compactification in eight or higher dimensions, the extra-dimensional components of the gauge field may be regarded as the Higgs field candidates. We suggest a way to protect these components from getting large tree-level masses by imposing a $Z_2$-symmetry acting on compact manifolds and background fields on them. In our scheme the infinite series of heavy KK modes naturally decouples from the light Higgs candidates, whose number is generically larger than one. We also present toy models with three families of leptons, illustrating that the Yukawa sector in our scheme is fairly strongly constrained. In one of these models, one fermion gets a tree-level mass after electroweak symmetry breaking, while two others remain naturally massless at the tree level.
